With the advancement of globalization, the spread of non-domesticated animal species which are becoming increasingly popular human companions, is observed. One of the species gaining popularity is the sugar glider, Petaurus breviceps. It is a small, omnivorous, arboreal, and nocturnal gliding possum. Many of the health problems recognized in sugar gliders kept in artificial conditions, stem from their specific anatomy, physiology, and behavior. Among the most commonly diagnosed health issues in sugar gliders are those associated with nutrition and stress, with neoplastic diseases, respiratory disorders including dyspnea, dental problems, inflammatory bowel disease, constipation and also diarrhea of various origin, lower urinary tract diseases, then mastitis and pouch infections, eye injuries, cataracts and moreover toxoplasmosis. This article provides a comprehensive review of these and other prevalent health disorders recognized in sugar gliders, supported by significant literature references. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Detection of animals is influenced by species traits, environment, season and the methods used. Analytical techniques can address imperfect detection, such as false absences, but data limitations hinder accurate density estimation. Identifying field survey methods that optimize detectability is therefore a high research priority, especially for species of conservation concern. We consider a model species, the sugar glider Petaurus notatus, to evaluate how optimizing detections can affect survey outcomes. A literature meta‐analysis found little innovation in baiting approaches for sugar gliders over four decades. Honey‐based baits prevailed, despite emerging evidence of opportunistic carnivory. We compared sugar glider detection probabilities using honey and fish‐based baits in a spatially explicit capture‐recapture study. Fish bait increased detections 33‐fold, and density estimation (0.12 ha−1) was only possible using the fish‐baited data – detections were too sparse using honey‐bait to facilitate analysis. Other factors that influence detectability include trap height and habitat connectivity, which were top moderators in our meta‐analysis, but these may be secondary to the bait or lure used. By using (i) species‐specific bait that accounts for the biology of the target species, and (ii) analytical tools to account for imperfect detection and heterogeneous movement of animals, we achieved good enough detection probabilities to undertake detailed analysis of the spatial ecology of sugar gliders. Compared to honey‐based baits (the prevailing approach of other studies on this species), the high detection probability attained with fish‐based baits provides an improvement on conventional practices. Our study is an important reminder that accounting for the biology of the target species during survey effort may mean the difference between collecting enough data for analysis or not. In the context of species conservation, optimizing detection likelihoods is critical for answering ecological questions about cryptic species, and our results demonstrate the need to reappraise generic approaches when better information is available. A 7-year-old female sugar glider showed a well-defined, homogeneous, hypoechoic mass in the caudal abdominal cavity on ultrasound. Exploratory laparotomy revealed both uteri were severely dilated by viscous, purulent exudate. The patient underwent ovariohysterectomy with removal of bilateral vaginal canals. Antibiotic therapy was initiated postoperatively. Histopathological findings were consistent with suppurative metritis, leading to a clinical diagnosis of pyometra. Despite abscess formation in the uterine stump or central vaginal canal and bilateral renal pelvic/ureter dilations postoperatively, the sugar glider survived more than 270 days. Unfortunately, surgical and medical treatments performed in this case did not prove curative. The outcome of this case highlights the importance of further accumulation of cases to define more appropriate therapies for pyometra in sugar gliders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dental disease in sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps) is understudied, with only limited clinical and pathological data available. An approximately 7-year-old female sugar glider presented to its primary care veterinarian for a decline in food intake, rapid weight loss and a mass involving the rostral mandible. At necropsy, the mandibular mass effaced most of the rostral mandible and adjacent musculature. Histologically, the mandible was disrupted by nodular infiltrates of variably degenerate neutrophils and macrophages encased in granulomatous inflammation and fibrous connective tissue. Within the neutrophilic cell population were segments of fragmented, necrotic bone and cloud-like colonies of gram-positive cocci. Aerobic culture yielded a heavy, pure growth of a gram-positive coccus morphologically consistent with those identified in the lesions, which was identified as a presumptively novel Kocuria sp by polymerase chain reaction and sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. This is the first description of Kocuria infection in association with clinically significant pathology in an animal. Although isolated as a pure growth, Kocuria sp cannot be confirmed as the sole cause of lesion formation due to the case chronicity and potential for unculturable, polymicrobial infections. Purpose: Hymenolepis (Rodentolepis) nana is an enteric tapeworm globally widespread in wild and captive rodents. The survey was carried out in three chinchilla breeding facilities and in one sugar glider breeding facility in Central and Southern Italy. Methods: One hundred and four chinchilla fecal pools and 40 sugar glider fecal pools were collected from cages housing breeding pairs or females with their offspring. Fecal samples were examined with a qualitative and quantitative copromicroscopical approach. Hymenolepis eggs were identified based on morphological and morphometrical features, and the average number of eggs per gram (EPG) of feces was estimated. Results: Hymenolepis nana eggs were detected in 39.42% of chinchilla samples with an average of 16.33 EPG; whereas, all of the sugar glider samples tested positive with an average of 454.18 EPG. Neither helminth eggs nor protozoan cysts/oocysts were detected in any of the breeding facilities. Conclusion: The results clearly show a diffuse parasitism in both chinchillas and sugar gliders, and should be taken into consideration given the rising popularity of these two pet species combined with the zoonotic complications presented by H. nana. Simple Summary: Sugar gliders are small marsupials that are becoming quite common as pets. As patients, they are challenging for clinical veterinarians. References about exotic animals are difficult to find, especially regarding the internal anatomy of Petaurus breviceps, knowledge of which is essential to reach a correct diagnosis of pathologies. Since the reproduction of marsupials is peculiar, we focused on the female genital apparatus of this species, very different from that of the usual mammals in veterinary practices. Sugar gliders have duplicates of all the genital organs: they have two ovaries, two oviducts, two uteri and two vaginas. In addition, in pregnant females, a new conduit arises: the birth canal, through which the offspring will leave the genital tract to go outside. In this species, the urinary, genital and digestive systems flow into a small cavity called the cloaca, which receives urine, the foetus and faeces, and communicates with the outside through a single orifice. Thus, the female genital apparatus of the sugar glider fits the general schema of marsupials. We dissected carcasses of eight mature females, both parous and non-parous specimens, to study the macroscopic anatomy of the female reproductive system in the sugar glider. The genital system includes double organs, namely the right and left ones, which are completely separated. It includes two ovaries, two oviducts, two uteri and a vaginal complex. The uteri are fusiform-shaped and lack horns. The vaginal complex includes two lateral vaginae and a median vagina, also called the 'birth canal'. The cranial end of both lateral vaginae partially fuses, forming an expansion named the vaginal sinus, which is divided into two parts by a longitudinal septum, one for each vagina, where the ipsilateral uterine cervix opens. The caudal end of the lateral vaginae opens into a medial and impar duct: the urogenital sinus that serves as a common passage for the reproductive and urinary systems. In non-pregnant females, only the lateral vaginae are present. In pregnant and recently parous females, a short median vagina extends from the caudal wall of the vaginal sinus to the cranial end of the urogenital sinus. Simple Summary: Sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps) are small, nocturnal, arboreal marsupials native to New Guinea and Australia, and are increasingly popular pets in Taiwan and the United States. Symptoms of common sugar glider diseases are often non-specific; therefore, blood tests, including hematology and plasma biochemistry, are important diagnostic tools for veterinarians. However, previous studies on this topic are rare. The goal of this study was to establish reference values of the aforementioned blood tests for pet sugar gliders. A total of 42 healthy pet sugar gliders were recruited, and hematological and plasma biochemical reference values were calculated. The influence of factors including age, gender, season and raising management were also analyzed. The information presented in this study can be beneficial for the future veterinary care of sugar gliders. Hematological and plasma biochemical examination are crucial in the veterinary care of sugar gliders, which are increasingly popular in Taiwan and the United States. The objectives of this study were to establish the hematological and plasma biochemical reference values for captive sugar gliders in Taiwan and to evaluate the influence of factors including age, gender, neuter status, location, season, diet, caging arrangement, and other pets in the household. A total of 42 clinically healthy pet sugar gliders were recruited. Morphometrical measurements and physiological data were collected, and hematological and plasma biochemical examinations were performed. The reference value of each index was calculated using Reference Value Advisor (RVA) software, following the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology (ASVCP) guidelines. Normality of data distribution was tested, and data transformation was conducted. The parametric method and robust method were used to determine reference limits. Univariate analysis was performed, and multiple regression models were built for each hematological and plasma biochemical parameter. Red blood cell, hematocrit, and hemoglobin levels were higher in males, compared to females, while they were lower in the neutered group, compared to the intact group. Relative neutrophil counts were higher in elder sugar gliders, while relative lymphocyte counts were lower. Aspartate transaminase levels were higher in elder sugar gliders, while albumin levels were lower. Blood urea nitrogen levels were highest in spring. Microchip implantation is a common procedure for identifying domestic animals but is less often used in zoological companion animal species. Microchipping and self-mutilation have each been described in sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps) but self-mutilation and other adverse effects of microchip implantation have not previously been reported previously. Four sugar gliders presented for open wounds on their dorsal interscapular regions after having microchips implanted 9 days prior. Each wound was clipped, cleaned, and surgically closed. Sugar gliders were managed on oral anti-inflammatories and antibiotics postoperatively. Histopathology of one of the wounds revealed evidence of necrosis, foreign plant material, and mixed areas of granulomatous and septic suppurative inflammation. Based on the clinical history, these findings were interpreted as a foreign body reaction and commensal bacterial infection with ulceration, most likely secondary to trauma. One of the sugar gliders was euthanized 13 days after surgery due to re-opening of the wound and failure to thrive. Necropsy of this sugar glider revealed severe dermatitis and panniculitis associated with large numbers of Morganella morganii and Streptococcus sp. The other three sugar gliders recovered and were doing well four months after surgery. Microchip implantation resulted in dermatitis and necrosis in four sugar gliders. These adverse effects may have involved a combination of foreign body reaction, commensal bacterial infection, self-mutilation, and mutilation by cohabitants. Treatment with antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, surgical closure, and supportive care was successful in 75% of cases, and failure of wound healing was fatal in one case. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A 6-year-old intact female sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps) had a swelling at the pouch region and died 8 days after presentation. At necropsy, the urinary bladder and abdominal lymph nodes were enlarged and a mass was located in the pericloacal region. Tumour infiltration was also observed in the medial iliac lymph nodes, liver, spleen, small intestine, uterus and left ovary. Histopathologically, the tumours were composed of pleomorphic histiocytes that had round or bizarre nuclei and abundant pale eosinophilic cytoplasm. Immunohistochemically, tumour cells were positive for ionized calcium-binding adaptor molecule 1 and human leukocyte antigen and negative for CD3, B lymphocyte antigen 36 and cytokeratin. Histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations confirmed a diagnosis of disseminated histiocytic sarcoma. This neoplasm has not been previously reported in a sugar glider. Lethal control of invasive mammalian predators can be controversial and is rarely a 'silver bullet' for conservation problems. Evaluating the efficacy of lethal control is important for demonstrating the benefits to threatened species are real and detecting unexpected perverse outcomes. We implemented a pilot study to evaluate if lethal control of introduced sugar gliders Petaurus breviceps can reduce the rate of nest predation on Tasmanian hollow nesting birds including swift parrots (Lathamus discolor). Using a before-after-control-impact design, we implemented a lethal control treatment whereby we attempted to remove sugar gliders from three treatment sites. In each time period across sites we monitored quail eggs in nest boxes to record predation, and used cameras to detect sugar gliders. We caught nine sugar gliders over three treatment sites. The model best supported by the data indicated an effect of site × time period on both egg survival and the rate of glider detection on cameras. There was no support for an effect of treatment on our data. We also recorded predation of a real swift parrot nest by sugar gliders at a treatment site where we recorded no predation of quail eggs. Our pilot study shows that at small scales, intensive lethal control of gliders yields low capture rates and no discernible effect on the metrics we measured. We conclude that alternative approaches to controlling the impact of sugar gliders, such as habitat protection, are critical in this study system before lethal control is widely implemented as a management tool. Objective: To provide reference values for ocular examination and diagnostics in ophthalmologically normal sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps). To retrospectively determine the prevalence of ocular diseases in sugar gliders presenting to a single institution. Animals: Ten client owned and 106 previously evaluated sugar gliders. Procedure: A descriptive study evaluated sugar gliders presented to Colorado State University's Avian, Exotics, and Zoological Medicine Service (CSU‐AEZ) from August‐2019 to January‐2020. A complete ophthalmic examination including Schirmer tear test II (STT II), phenol red threat test (PRTT), intraocular pressure (IOP) via rebound tonometry, fluorescein, and rose bengal stain was performed under anesthesia. Conjunctival aerobic culture swabs and cytology were collected prior to ophthalmic evaluation. A retrospective review of medical records of sugar gliders presented to CSU‐AEZ from 2008 to 2018 for ocular disease was performed. Results: Mean values ± standard deviation for selected diagnostics included the following: STT II: 2.2 ± 6.7 mm/min; PRTT: 0 ± 0 mm/15 s; IOP: 12 ± 2.6 mm Hg. Fluorescein and rose bengal staining highlighted corneal abrasions secondary to tear testing. The three most common conjunctival bacterial isolates cultured were Staphylococcus spp. (3/20, 15%), Coryneform spp. (3/20, 15%), and unidentified Gram‐positive cocci (3/20, 15%). Retrospective analysis revealed ocular diseases to be the third most common abnormality resulting in sugar glider presentations (13/106, 12.3%). Conclusion: This descriptive study gives reference values for IOP, conjunctival microbiology, and cytology for sugar gliders. STT II and PRTT provide little clinical value in sugar gliders. In urban bushland, the installation of nest boxes is widely used to compensate for the loss of natural tree hollows. However, current nest box designs may not provide thermal refuges for wildlife during summer heatwaves, particularly if internal temperatures exceed the upper critical temperatures of wildlife. We investigated whether the addition of roofing insulation to nest boxes deployed for sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps) and squirrel gliders (Petaurus norfolcensis) in urban bushland would reduce internal nest box temperatures during summer heatwaves. We measured temperatures of 44 insulated and 47 uninsulated nest boxes during one of the hottest summers on record (2018–2019) in the Lake Macquarie region of NSW, Australia, a period during which several prolonged heatwaves occurred. Over the 90-day study, maximum temperatures were, on average, 3.1°C lower in insulated boxes than in uninsulated boxes. The addition of insulation significantly lowered nest box temperatures regardless of aspect (north or south facing) or day of measurement. Temperatures exceeded the upper critical temperature (35.1°C) of gliders more frequently in uninsulated nest boxes (28% of days) than in insulated nest boxes (8% days). Although the addition of insulation to nest boxes lowered their internal temperatures, during heatwaves spanning 23 days, nest box temperatures exceeded the upper critical temperatures of gliders on 58% and 23% of days in uninsulated and insulated nest boxes respectively. These findings underscore the importance of retaining natural hollows in urban bushland to provide thermally suitable refuges for wildlife during extreme heat events. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps) is a small, arboreal, nocturnal, gliding mammalian possum belonging to the marsupial infraclass. Exotic marsupials, including sugar gliders, are becoming popular companion pets and, consequently, the risk of potential infections that can be transmitted to humans should be investigated. Data on the role of the sugar glider as a possible carrier of pathogenic and zoonotic bacteria are scarce and fragmentary. Therefore, this study is aimed at evaluating the prevalence of potentially zoonotic bacteria (Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli, Campylobacter spp., Pseudomonas spp., Klebsiella spp., Listeria monocytogenes and Yersinia enterocolitica) in 64 sugar gliders kept as pets in Italy. The highest prevalence of infection pertained to members of the family Enterobacteriaceae, in particular Citrobacter spp. (50%), Enterobacter spp. (28·1%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (15·6%); Pseudomonas aeruginosa was isolated from 10 out of 64 samples (15·6%). All strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae exhibited some level of resistance to multiple antimicrobials (ampicillin, amoxicillin‐clavulanic acid and doxycycline). Significance and Impact of the Study: The results of this study show that sugar gliders may act as carriers of potentially pathogenic agents for humans and other animal species, therefore caution should be exercised in the handling and contact with these animals. The demand for exotic non-domesticated animals kept as pets in the United States of America (USA) is increasing the exportation rates of these species from their native ranges. Often, illegal harvesting of these species is used to boost captive-bred numbers and meet this demand. One such species, the sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps), endemic to Australia and New Guinea is a popular domestic pet due to its small size and “cute” demeanour. Despite a legal avenue for trade existing in Indonesia, concerns have been raised that sugar gliders may be entering the USA from other parts of their native range where exportation is prohibited such as Australia, Papua New Guinea and the surrounding Indonesian islands. We compared previously published DNA sequences from across the native range of sugar gliders with samples collected from domestically kept sugar gliders within the USA to determine provenance and gene flow between source and introduced populations. Here we show that as predicted, the USA sugar glider population originates from West Papua, Indonesia with no illegal harvesting from other native areas such as Papua New Guinea or Australia evident in the samples tested within this study.

Postmortem examination of an 8-year-old intact female sugar glider euthanized for end-stage neoplasia revealed a large mass in the mammary gland, masses in the liver, and a few small masses in the lung. Histologic evaluation of the lesions revealed hepatocellular carcinoma, mammary gland adenocarcinoma, and pulmonary granulomata associated with a trematode larva. Ribosomal RNA gene sequencing identified a diplomastid fluke, Neodiplostomum americanum. This parasite utilizes snails as first intermediate hosts and birds of prey as definitive hosts, but the complete life cycle is not known; the hosts of the intervening life stages had not been previously reported. Sex ratio bias and shared paternity reduce individual fitness and population viability in a critically endangered parrot. Journal of Animal Ecology, 88, 502–510. While the effects of variation in the sex ratio of offspring have been thoroughly explored over the last century, the sex ratio of adults has received far less attention. A paper by Heinsohn and colleagues in this issue shows that changes in the adult sex ratio can have striking effects on mating systems, reproductive success and population viability. These impacts are all the more dramatic because they occur in a critically endangered species, the swift parrot, Lathamus discolor, of Tasmania. This species suffers heavy predation from the introduced sugar glider, Petaurus breviceps, which kills nesting females and their clutches, resulting in strongly male‐biased adult sex ratios. The authors combined demographic and genetic data to show that, at sites with heavier predation, the remaining females were more likely to mate with multiple males. This shift in the mating system also led to lower overall nesting success, with fewer chicks fledged per nest at sites with higher levels of mixed paternity. Population viability models based on these data predicted steep population declines, with models using the highest observed rates of mixed paternity showing the sharpest declines. These results demonstrate that changes in the adult sex ratio can have far‐reaching impacts, including on the fitness of populations themselves. Many deadly sugar glider diseases remain underdiagnosed. Thus, this study aimed to detect the presence of Blastocystis sp. in sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps). Fresh stools were taken from 100 3-month to 4-year old male and female sugar gliders from enthusiasts and breeders. Samples were directly observed in wet mount, stained with iodine, methylene blue, and giemsa, and cultured on simple and RPMI 1640 media. Results showed high detection of the parasite: 87% on wet mount, 94% on iodine staining, and 100% on methylene blue, giemsa staining and cultured media. Blastocystis sp. in sugar glider can be described as vacuolar, granular, cyst, and amoeboid, wherein vacuolar form predominated with size 0.38-2.95 µm (average of 1.46 µm). The parasite lived for 6 days in simple culture medium and 5 days on RPMI 1640 medium. Growth peak was marked on the third day for both media. This study is the first to report Blastocystis sp. in sugar gliders, revealing its presence in both fresh and cultured sugar glider stools. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A 7-year-old female sugar glider showed a well-defined, homogeneous, hypoechoic mass in the caudal abdominal cavity on ultrasound. Exploratory laparotomy revealed both uteri were severely dilated by viscous, purulent exudate. The patient underwent ovariohysterectomy with removal of bilateral vaginal canals. Antibiotic therapy was initiated postoperatively. Histopathological findings were consistent with suppurative metritis, leading to a clinical diagnosis of pyometra. Despite abscess formation in the uterine stump or central vaginal canal and bilateral renal pelvic/ureter dilations postoperatively, the sugar glider survived more than 270 days. Unfortunately, surgical and medical treatments performed in this case did not prove curative. The outcome of this case highlights the importance of further accumulation of cases to define more appropriate therapies for pyometra in sugar gliders.

Abstract A pilot study was performed to investigate the impact of dietary vitamin D on circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) metabolite concentrations in sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps). The study with diets containing 0, 0.2 (low), or 0.4 (moderate) International Units vitamin D 3 per gram of dry matter and fed to adults at 2 locations. Serum 25[OH]D concentrations did not differ between animals fed produce only (no added vitamin D–either D 2 or D 3) for 3 weeks (8.83 ± 0.98 nmol/L), n = 6, or low dietary levels (7.86 ± 3.80 nmol/L), n = 7, continuously for multiple years. Conversely, animals consuming diets containing moderate vitamin D 3 levels displayed increased circulating concentrations (15.00 ± 3.59), n = 8, after 3 weeks. Despite the response to diets supplemented with vitamin D, overall metabolite levels were low and may indicate minimal metabolic dependence on this nutrient in sugar gliders, similar to processes documented in other hindgut fermenters. Summary: Nest boxes are commonly installed to support hollow‐using species where the abundance of hollow‐bearing trees is deficient. Recent studies have provided equivocal evidence about the effectiveness of nest box projects and have highlighted significant management costs associated with some projects. We document the functionality of 303 nest boxes installed across five different community‐led projects in southern Australia for periods of 10–25 years. As expected, we found that nest boxes lost functionality over time. However, 60% remained functional to support the Brush‐tailed Phascogale (Phascogale tapoatafa) and the Sugar Glider (Petaurus breviceps) after almost 20 years. Years installed, method of nest box attachment and tree species influenced whether boxes remained functional. Nest box construction material changed over time so could not be assessed specifically. When inspected in a single year, the Brush‐tailed Phascogale occupied 9% of functional boxes and another 48% contained their nests. The Sugar Glider occupied 15% of functional boxes and another 22% contained their nests. These values suggest the nest box installations were highly effective for these species, although more detailed study is needed to understand what contribution these installations have made to support the local populations. Maintenance of most nest boxes occurred twice a year in the first five years after installation, but many received no maintenance for periods of three years, and some 10–15 years, before our census. Our findings suggest that infrequent maintenance by community groups can sustain nest box projects over periods of several decades. Aim: Range expansions facilitated by humans or in response to local biotic or abiotic stressors provide the opportunity for species to occupy novel environments. Classifying the status of newly expanded populations can be difficult, particularly when the timing and nature of the range expansion are unclear. Should native species in new habitats be considered invasive pests or actively conserved? Here, we present an analytical framework applied to an Australian marsupial, the sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps), a species that preys upon on an endangered parrot in Tasmania, and whose provenance was uncertain. Location: Tasmania, Australia. Methods: We conducted an extensive search of historical records for sugar glider occurrences in Tasmania. Source material included museum collection data, early European expedition logs, community observation records, and peer-reviewed and grey literature. To determine the provenance of the Tasmanian population, we sequenced two mitochondrial genes and one nuclear gene in Tasmanian animals (n = 27) and in individuals across the species' native range. We then estimated divergence times between Tasmania and southern Australian populations using phylogenetic and Bayesian analyses. Results: We found no historical evidence of sugar gliders occurring in Tasmania prior to 1835. All Tasmanian individuals (n = 27) were genetically identical at the three genes surveyed here with those individuals being 0.125% divergent from individuals from a population in Victoria. Bayesian analysis of divergence between Tasmanian individuals and southern Australian individuals suggested a recent introduction of sugar gliders into Tasmania from southern Australia. Main conclusions: Molecular and historical data demonstrate that Tasmanian sugar gliders are a recent, post-European, anthropogenic introduction from mainland Victoria. This result has implications for the management of the species in relation to their impact on an endangered parrot. This report describes an alternative surgical technique for performing scrotal ablation and orchiectomy in the adult male sugar glider ( Petaurus breviceps ) using electrosurgery. Eight animals from a local small mammal shelter group that presented for routine surgical castration for population control measures were included in this study. Mean surgical time was 4.37 ± 2.13 seconds. Mean anesthesia time was 12.32 ± 5.63 minutes. Mean recovery time was 8.37 ± 3.68 minutes. Mean total procedure time was 22.24 ± 5.69 minutes. No perioperative complications were reported. All animals appeared to have sufficient pain management with an analgesia and anti-inflammatory protocol using butorphanol and meloxicam. No over grooming and or self-injurious behaviors were reported by the local shelter during both the 24-hour and 14-day recheck examinations. Electrosurgery scrotal ablation and orchiectomy therefore offers an alternate route for the practicing veterinarian to perform safe and efficient castrations in male sugar gliders. Histologically, in the epididymis, 3 of the 8 sugar gliders had evidence of a well-defined region in the head, between the efferent ducts and the remaining epididymis. The lining cells differed morphologically from those constituting the remaining epithelial lining. The recent observation that torpor plays a key role in post-fire survival has been mainly attributed to the reduced food resources after fires. However, some of these adjustments can be facilitated or amplified by environmental changes associated with fires, such as the presence of a charcoal-ash substrate. In a previous experiment on a small terrestrial mammal the presence of charcoal and ash linked to food restriction intensified torpor use. However, whether fire cues also act as a trigger of torpor use when food is available and whether they affect other species including arboreal mammals remains elusive. To evaluate whether smoke, charcoal and ash can act as proximate triggers for an impending period of food shortage requiring torpor for mammals, we conducted an experiment on captive sugar gliders ( Petaurus breviceps ), a small, arboreal marsupial, housed in outside aviaries under different food regimes and natural ambient conditions. When food was available, fire simulation via exposure to smoke and charcoal-ash substrate caused a significant earlier start of activity and a significant decrease in resting body temperature. In contrast, only when food was withheld, did smoke and charcoal-ash exposure significantly enhance torpor depth and duration. Thus, our study not only provides evidence that fire simulation does affect arboreal and terrestrial species similarly, but also suggests that smoke and ash were presumably selected as cues for torpor induction because they indicate an impending lack of food. Three diets fed to 12 pair-housed sugar gliders, Petaurus breviceps, were evaluated through 5-day intake and digestion trials following 10-day transitions. Diets 1 and 2 comprised liquid formula mixes with added vegetables and fruit, and Diet 3 comprised extruded pellets and a liquid formula. Diets eaten contained 16 -19% crude protein, 3%-15% crude fat, 10%-11% neutral detergent fibre, 4%-20% starch and 8%-49% sugar (dry basis). Calculated individual dry matter intakes ( DMI) ranged from 3.9 to 5.1 g/day, representing 58.2-78.4 kJ/day. DMI was greater for Diet 2 (7.2% BW) vs. Diet 1 (5.6; p = .006) and Diet 3 (4.2% BW; p = .003). Although these differences were no longer detectable on a MBW basis, animals were shown to have gained BW (+14.2 g; p = .03) on Diet 2. In addition to nutrient composition differing widely among diets, DM digestibility ( DMD) was higher in Diet 1 (91.2%) compared to Diet 2 (87.3%; p = .03), but DMD for Diet 3 (88.9%) did not differ from other diets. Gliders demonstrated ability to digest a variety of energy substrates, including simple sugars (96%-99%), fats (81%-96%) and starches (79%-98%), as well as substantial insoluble dietary fibre (58%-75%), with significant difference among diets demonstrated for some nutrients. Animals displayed selective feeding behaviours, rejecting insoluble fibre in produce and preferring the lipid-coated exterior of pellets. The diets used appeared to be balanced with respect to energy, protein and macromineral content, but may predispose to iron excess, other mineral imbalances (especially Ca deficiency) and obesity-clinical health issues described for pet gliders. Future focus on concentrations, types and utilization of dietary fibre in natural and captive diets, vitamin D metabolism and trace mineral interactions in sugar gliders would assist diet optimization for this highly gummivorous species. A male sugar glider ( Petaurus breviceps ) was presented to the National Taiwan University Veterinary hospital for repeated self-mutilation of the cloacal region. After correction of husbandry deficiencies and medical management of the lesion, the condition improved but a pericloacal mass was found. Surgical removal of the mass resolved the self-mutilation, and a dorsal paracloacal gland carcinoma was diagnosed on histopathological examination. Straining to defecate and a pericloacal mass could indicate neoplasia in sugar gliders. A tumor should be differentiated from chronic inflammation, infection, paracloacal gland impaction, and hyperplasia. Surgical removal is recommended as a treatment for paracloacal gland carcinoma in sugar gliders. Further monitoring is suggested after surgical removal of the tumor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pulmonary hyalinosis is an idiopathic, typically incidental lesion of old dogs, characterized by multifocal aggregates of epithelioid and multinucleate macrophages that surround periodic acid–Schiff (PAS)-positive hyaline material in airways. Lung lesions resembling pulmonary hyalinosis were observed in 6 captive adult sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps; 5 females and 1 male) in a retrospective review of 18 autopsied animals. Clinical signs for 3 of the sugar gliders included lethargy, tachypnea, and dyspnea. At autopsy, 5 of 6 animals had comorbid lesions that were the primary cause of death. Gross pulmonary lesions were characterized by mildly firm, discolored, vaguely nodular areas of parenchyma. Histologic examination of the lung revealed granulomatous inflammation with intracellular and extracellular amphophilic hyaline bodies within alveoli and airways. Hyaline bodies were positive for PAS and oil red O staining, blue via crystal violet staining, and displayed birefringence under polarized light, similar to findings in dogs with pulmonary hyalinosis. Five sugar gliders ( Petaurus breviceps), ranging in age from 3 mo to 3.5 yr of age, and one opossum ( Didelphis virginianus), age 4.5 mo, presented for elective orchiectomy and scrotal ablation. The LigaSure™ device was safely used for orchiectomy and scrotal ablation in both species. Surgical time with the LigaSure was approximately 4 sec. No grooming of the incision site or self-mutilation was seen in the first 72 hr postoperatively. One sugar glider required postoperative wound care approximately 10 days postoperatively following incision-site grooming by a conspecific. The LigaSure provides a rapid, technologically simple and safe surgical technique for scrotal ablation and orchiectomy in the marsupial patient that minimizes surgical, anesthetic, and recovery times. Summary: Camera traps are a popular tool for monitoring wildlife though they can fail to capture enough morphological detail for accurate small mammal species identification. Camera trapping small mammals is often limited by the inability of camera models to: (i) record at close distances; and (ii) provide standardised photos. This study aims to provide a camera trapping method that captures standardised images of the faces of small mammals for accurate species identification, with further potential for individual identification. A novel camera trap design coined the 'selfie trap' was developed. The selfie trap is a camera contained within an enclosed PVC pipe with a modified lens that produces standardised close images of small mammal species encountered in this study, including: Brown Antechinus (Antechinus stuartii), Bush Rat (Rattus fuscipes) and Sugar Glider (Petaurus breviceps). Individual identification was tested on the common arboreal Sugar Glider. Five individual Sugar Gliders were identified based on unique head stripe pelage. The selfie trap is an accurate camera trapping method for capturing detailed and standardised images of small mammal species. The design described may be useful for wildlife management as a reliable method for surveying small mammal species. An adult, intact male sugar glider ( Petaurus breviceps) presented for acute caudal abdominal swelling. Treatment by the referring veterinarian included aspiration of urine from the swelling. On physical examination, mild depression, pale mucus membranes, and caudal abdominal swelling were noted. Focused ultrasonographic assessment revealed a fluid-filled caudal abdominal structure and subjective bladder wall thickening. The following day, the sugar glider was severely depressed. Hematology results included hypoglycemia, hyperkalemia, hyponatremia, and azotemia. Ultrasonography revealed bilateral hydronephrosis and hydroureter. Despite supportive care, the animal died. Postmortem examination confirmed bilateral ureteral dilation, renal petechial hemorrhage, and dilation of the right renal pelvis. Submucosal edema, hemorrhage, and lymphoplasmacytic infiltration of the urinary bladder, ureters, and renal pelvises were noted. Hyperplasia of the urinary bladder and ureteral epithelium, coupled with inflammation, may have caused functional obstruction leading to bilateral hydronephrosis and hydroureter. Assessing future changes in the suitability of the climate niche for interacting species across different trophic levels can identify direct and indirect effects of climate change that may be missed using single-species approaches. We use ensembles of species distribution models based on a dynamically down-scaled regional climate model to project the future suitability of climate for the Swift Parrot (Lathamus discolor), its primary food and habitat resources (Tasmanian Blue Gum (Eucalyptus globulus) and Swamp Gum (E. ovata)), and an introduced nest predator, the Sugar Glider (Petaurus breviceps). These results are combined with layers representing mature forest and fire danger to identify locations that may act as refuges for the Swift Parrot from fire, deforestation and predation under baseline and future climates. Almost a quarter of the nesting habitat of Swift Parrots is projected to become climatically unsuitable by the end of the 21st century, but large areas may remain climatically suitable for both Swift Parrots and their food trees. However, loss of forests and the presence of Sugar Gliders are likely to limit the availability of high-quality habitat. Offshore islands that the Sugar Glider is unable to colonise or where future climate is not projected to be suitable for the Sugar Glider may be the only places, in the near future, where the Swift Parrot will be protected from nest predation by this introduced species. Two cases of renal klossiellosis were diagnosed by histopathology in pet sugar gliders ( Petaurus breviceps). In both cases, parasites were associated with tubular dilation and mild interstitial nephritis. Rare schizonts were seen in the proximal convoluted renal tubular epithelium, whereas all other life cycle stages were found within distal convoluted tubule cells or the urinary space of the structures distal to the loop of Henle. Conventional optical and transmission electron microscopies were used to assess the life stages of the parasite. The morphologic characteristics and measurements observed differ from those of previously described species of Klossiella infecting marsupial hosts, and the name Klossiella dulcis n. sp. is hereby proposed. A 15-year-old intact female sugar glider ( Petaurus breviceps ) presented for a 3-day history of diarrhea and weight loss despite an excellent appetite. Upon physical examination under manual restraint, the animal was determined to be emaciated with a palpable l cm diameter, firm, and irregular abdominal mass. Following 72 hours of supportive and palliative treatment (including oral antibiotics and glucocorticoids) with no clinical response, the owner elected euthanasia and approved antemortem diagnostics for teaching purposes. A complete blood count revealed a moderate regenerative anemia, mild leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia. A significant number of sideroleukocytes were noted upon examination of a blood smear, along with platelet clumps. Plasma biochemical analysis showed moderate hypoproteinemia, moderate hypoalbuminemia, mild hypokalemia, and elevated total bilirubin. Mild hypernatremia and hyperchloremia were also present. An abdominal ultrasound confirmed the presence of a large hypoechoic abdominal mass, which appeared to be associated with the liver. Whole-body radiographs did not assist in reaching an antemortem diagnosis because of poor abdominal serosal detail secondary to severe emaciation. Postmortem examination and histopathology provided a definitive diagnosis of concurrent hepatocellular carcinoma and adrenocortical carcinoma with no evidence of metastases. Huddling and torpor are widely used for minimizing heat loss by mammals. Despite the questionable energetic benefits from social heterothermy of mixed groups of warm normothermic and cold torpid individuals, the heterothermic Australian sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps) rests in such groups during the cold season. To unravel why they might do so, we examined torpor expression of two sugar glider groups of four individuals each in outside enclosures during winter. We observed 79 torpor bouts during 50 days of observation and found that torpor bouts were longer and deeper when all individuals of a group entered torpor together, and therefore infer that they would have saved more energy in comparison to short and shallow solitary torpor bouts. However, all gliders of either group only expressed torpor uniformly in response to food restriction, whereas on most occasions at least one individual per group remained normothermic. Nevertheless, the presence of warm gliders in mixed groups also appears to be of energetic advantage for torpid individuals, because nest box temperature was negatively correlated with the number of torpid gliders, and normothermic individuals kept the nest temperature at a value closer to the threshold for thermoregulatory heat production during torpor. Our study suggests that mixed groups of torpid and normothermic individuals are observed when environmental conditions are adverse but food is available, leading to intermediate energy savings from torpor.
