Abstract

In many watersheds located in southern California, efforts are being focused on urban runoff because of its adverse impact on receiving water quality. The Sweetwater River watershed is a good example, where the drainage area is rapidly urbanizing and deteriorating reservoir water quality. Contaminated storm water is captured and diverted but as urbanization increases, additional runoff will be generated which will overload the existing infrastructure. To better manage the diversion systems and minimize future construction, storm-water volumes and pollutant loadings need to be estimated. Due to the lack of real-time storm-water runoff monitoring data, pollutant loadings must be estimated from land use information. We used satellite imagery to estimate selected storm-water pollutant loads and compared the results to predictions using land use information from public records. Satellite imagery was useful in estimating storm-water pollutant loads and identifying high loading areas. Satellite imagery with appropriate classification is a promising tool for watershed management and for prioritizing best management practices. Abstract

A comprehensive study aimed at establishing the relationships between sensory and chemical properties of drinking water is presented. The need to determine chemical/sensor taste and odor correlation necessitated the development of a statistical method. The use of principal component factor analysis (PCFA) in the statistical method allowed the correlation of specific flavor descriptors with specific chromatographic peaks. A more reliable chemical response constant (CRC) necessitates the mathematical transformation of analytical data for linear correlation.

39. Biological Activated Carbon—At What Cost?

Abstract

The combination of oxidation by ozonation and adsorption by granular activated carbon is commonly referred to as the biological activated carbon process. This article examines the technical and economic feasibility of incorporating ozone, GAC, or ozone‐GAC unit processes into a conventional water treatment train to remove trace organic compounds, to reduce total organic carbon, and to control unpleasant tastes and odors. Used as a basis for this evaluation are the operating conditions and results of a three‐year, pilot‐scale investigation of advanced water treatment systems that was conducted on Delaware River water in Philadelphia, Pa.

40. Aqueous Chlorine/Activated Carbon Interactions

Abstract

The interaction between chlorine and activated carbon is investigated using a group of organic compounds which span the range of polarity from moderately polar to very polar. For the four polarity probes—nitromethane, methyl ethyl ketone, n‐butanol, and 1,4‐dioxane—oxidation of the carbon surface with chlorine significantly reduced their equilibrium adsorption capacities. The adsorption isotherms for urea using oxidized and virgin activated carbon were not significantly different. A significant decrease in the adsorption capacity of activated carbon in column studies was demonstrated for an increase in the amount of chlorine reduced on the carbon surface. The results of this study suggests that if large slugs of oxidants are allowed to be reduced on the carbon surface, the adsorption efficiency of the affected carbon columns will be reduced. Reduced adsorption efficiencies will necessitate more frequent regeneration cycles, which will increase operating costs and may expose consumers to higher‐than‐expected concentrations of potentially harmful organic compounds.
