1. Fungus gnat pollination in Arisaema urashima: the interplay of lethal traps and mutualistic nurseries.

Abstract

While most flowering plants engage in mutualistic interactions with their pollinators, Arisaema species employ a unique, seemingly antagonistic strategy by imprisoning and causing the pollinators to perish within their spathes. Recent studies have revealed that Arisaema thunbergii primarily relies on a fungus gnat, Leia ishitanii, with some individuals possibly escaping female spathes after oviposition.We investigated interactions between A. urashima and its pollinating fungus gnats, given that A. urashima is closely related to A. thunbergii. Specifically, we tested whether decaying A. urashima serve as brood‐sites for some pollinators and whether these pollinators can escape seemingly lethal floral traps. We retrieved A. urashima spathes together with adult insect corpses trapped within the spathes and incubated the spathes to see if conspecific insects emerged. In addition, under laboratory conditions, we observed the escape behaviour of Sciophila yokoyamai, whose next‐generation adults most frequently emerge from the decaying spathes.Our findings indicate that S. yokoyamai almost always escapes from the female spathe after oviposition while using the inflorescence as a nursery. In contrast, other pollinators of A. urashima, including Mycetophila spp., remain trapped and perished within the spathes.This study demonstrates that A. urashima spathes can function both as lethal traps and mutualistic nurseries, with outcomes differing among pollinator species. Our results also suggest that the contribution of certain pollinators to Arisaema reproduction is underestimated or even neglected, given that information on their pollinator assemblages has been based on floral visitors trapped within the inflorescences. 17. An improved loop-mediated isothermal amplification assay for the detection of Mycoplasma bovis

Abstract

We improved a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay permitting sensitive and rapid Mycoplasma bovis detection. A total of 55 bacterial strains were examined in this study, including 33 M. bovis strains, 14 non-M. bovis mycoplasmas and eight non-mycoplasma bacterial strains. M. bovis was successfully detected by the LAMP assay within 60 min without cross-reaction to any other bacteria. Furthermore, a total of 135 nasal swab samples were tested directly using our LAMP assays, the previously reported LAMP assay, conventional PCR assay without pre-culture and comparing standard culture methods. The improved LAMP assay showed sensitivity and specificity of 97.2% and 90.9%, respectively (with a kappa coefficient of 0.8231), and the sensitivity of our revised LAMP assay was increased compared to existing methods.

18. Polymer Flood Produced Water Treatment Trials

Abstract

Polymer enhanced oil recovery (EOR) operation has been implemented for the production of oil from difficult mature oilfields in Oman. The polymer used in this EOR technique to sweep oil toward production wells is resulting in the generation of polymer flood produced water (PFPW) of increasing viscosity. Current methods of treating oilfield produced water must be reconsidered for the effective treatment of such PFPW of changing quality. In a previous study, the utilization of polyaluminum chloride (PAC) chemical was proposed for the coagulation of oil in produced water to be separated by flotation and filtration. As such, laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate the applicability of PAC and other chemicals for treatment of PFPW that has higher viscosity than ordinary oilfield produced water. These tests clearly indicated that aluminum sulfate (AS) chemical was more effective for treatment of such higher viscosity water. A pilot plant developed during the earlier study, was utilized to conduct coagulation/flocculation, flotation, filtration, and adsorption treatment trials for PFPW from an oilfield where polymer EOR is underway. For the final trial, the inlet PFPW viscosity was 1.4 cP at 40 °C and oil concentration was above 200 mg·L−1. AS was applied for coagulation/flocculation and flotation stages, and was found to be effective in reducing oil concentration to 1 mg·L−1. Filtration and adsorption stages resulted in further improvement of water quality. Most of the polymer used for EOR was believed to have been removed along with oil and suspended solids.

Abstract

The present study addresses the efficiency of an integrated air sparging, soil vapor extraction, and pump and treat system in the remediation of a diesel contaminated site in Oman. Cleanup efforts have targeted groundwater and soil in fractured formations. Site hydrogeological characterization was conducted including sampling and analysis of water and soil. Within seven months of the start of the treatment system, benzene gas in the unsaturated zone fell from an initial range of 15-60 ppm to below detection level, while total petroleum hydrocarbon in the groundwater dropped from 25-50 ppm to less than 0.5 ppm. Treatment processes have ceased while groundwater and soil are being monitored. Thus far, benzene gas has been undetected for the past 18 months, but total petroleum hydrocarbon in groundwater has rebounded to 1.2 ppm during the last four months. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

As new forms of digital communication and social media are used and adopted by various communities, privacy becomes an increasingly more difficult and complex issue. While previous work has studied bloggers' practices with respect to negotiating privacy, little research has been done on the ways in which readers of blogs perceive privacy in blogs. This poster presents results from a qualitative study of blog readers, describing how privacy is connected with contextual appropriateness, personal content, and perceptions of online and offline identity. These results are compared to previous, blogger-oriented findings in order to work towards a more complete understanding of privacy related perceptions and practices in blogging.
