Quartz-limestone feed mixtures were ground in a laboratory-size, choke-fed, high-pressure roll mill. The harder component in the mixture was found to be coarser and the softer component finer than when the minerals were ground separately. The disproportionate split of mill energy between the feed constituents was quantified using an energy-split index, which was then incorporated into the grinding kinetic model to simulate the product size distribution of the mixture constituents as a function of energy input to the mill. Grinding circuits can be naturally modelled using an object-oriented approach. A suitable hierarchy of objects was identified by one-to-one mapping of the physical and conceptual objects in a grinding circuit into a corresponding software domain. However these tend to be developed on informal software engineering methodologies which are not suitable for long term development. A formal design methodology is necessary to develop efficient, error-free and easy to use and to maintain software.
