Understanding the interplay among different magnetic exchange interactions and its physical consequences, especially in the presence of itinerant electrons and disorder, remains one of the central themes in condensed matter physics. In this vein, the coupling between antiferromagnetic and spin-glass orders may lead to large exchange bias, a property with potential broad technological applications. In this paper, we report the coexistence of antiferromagnetic order and spin-glass behaviors in the quasi-one-dimensional iron telluride ${\mathrm{TaFe}}_{1+x}{\mathrm{Te}}_{3}$ ($x=0.25$). Its antiferromagnetism is believed to arise from the antiferromagnetic interchain coupling between the ferromagnetically aligned FeTe chains along the $b$ axis, while the spin-glassy state stems from the disordered Fe interstitials. This dichotomic role of chain and interstitial sublattices is responsible for the large exchange bias observed at low temperatures, with the interstitial Fe acting as the uncompensated moment and its neighboring Fe chain providing the source for its pinning. This iron-based telluride may thereby represent a paradigm to study the large family of transition metal chalcogenides whose magnetic order or even dimensionality can be tuned to a large extent, forming a fertile playground to manipulate or switch the spin degrees of freedom thereof.

Chiral superconductors are novel topological materials with finite angular momentum Cooper pairs circulating around a unique chiral axis, thereby spontaneously breaking time-reversal symmetry. They are rather scarce and usually feature triplet pairing: a canonical example is the chiral p-wave state realized in the A-phase of superfluid He3. Chiral triplet superconductors are, however, topologically fragile with the corresponding gapless boundary modes only weakly protected against symmetry-preserving perturbations in contrast to their singlet counterparts. Using muon spin relaxation measurements, here we report that the weakly correlated pnictide compound LaPt3P has the two key features of a chiral superconductor: spontaneous magnetic fields inside the superconducting state indicating broken time-reversal symmetry and low temperature linear behaviour in the superfluid density indicating line nodes in the order parameter. Using symmetry analysis, first principles band structure calculation and mean-field theory, we unambiguously establish that the superconducting ground state of LaPt3P is a chiral d-wave singlet., Nature Communications, 12 (1), ISSN:2041-1723

Superconductivity and magnetism are antagonistic states of matter. The presence of spontaneous magnetic fields inside the superconducting state is, therefore, an intriguing phenomenon prompting extensive experimental and theoretical research. In this review, we discuss recent experimental discoveries of unconventional superconductors which spontaneously break time-reversal symmetry and theoretical efforts in understanding their properties. We discuss the main experimental probes and give an extensive account of theoretical approaches to understand the order parameter symmetries and the corresponding pairing mechanisms including the importance of multiple bands., 29 pages, 10 figures

We report the discovery of Zr$_3$Ir as a new type of unconventional noncentrosymmetric superconductor (with $T_c = 2.3$ K), here investigated mostly via muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($\mu$SR) techniques. Its superconductivity was characterized using magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and heat capacity measurements. The low-temperature superfluid density, determined via transverse-field $\mu$SR and electronic specific heat, suggests a fully-gapped superconducting state. The spontaneous magnetic fields, revealed by zero-field $\mu$SR below $T_c$, indicate the breaking of time-reversal symmetry in Zr$_3$Ir and, hence, the unconventional nature of its superconductivity. By using symmetry arguments and electronic-structure calculations we obtain a superconducting order parameter that is fully compatible with the experimental observations. The exceptionally low-symmetry crystal structures of the time-reversal symmetry breaking superconductors LaNiC$_2$ and LaNiGa$_2$ lead to an internally-antisymmetric non-unitary triplet (INT) state as the only possibility compatible with experiments. We argue that this state has a distinct signature: a double-peak structure in the Density of States (DOS) which resolves in the spin channel in a particular way. We construct a detailed model of LaNiGa$_2$ capturing its electronic band structure and magnetic properties ab initio. The pairing mechanism is described via a single adjustable parameter. The latter is fixed by the critical temperature $T_c$ allowing parameter-free predictions. We compute the electronic specific heat and find excellent agreement with experiment. The size of the ordered moment in the superconducting state is compatible with zero-field muon spin relaxation experiments and the predicted spin-resolved DOS suggests the spin-splitting is within the reach of present experimental technology., Comment: Accepted in PRB as a rapid communication

In this work we have satisfied the objective to analyse the medium carbon steel rods which are welded frictionally on their tensile properties when the welding parameter is maximum and minimum in values of forging pressure with respect to time. This work also carries the macrostructure and microstructure analysis of the weldments so as to identify the metal flow and grain structures in different zones of the welds. This work is carried to identify the suitable level of value of the forging pressure with respect to time and analysing their mechanical properties in that level. Fracture analysis was also carried out in the fracture surface.

An innovative way to produce quantum Hall ribbons in a cold atomic system is to use M hyperfine states of atoms in a one-dimensional optical lattice to mimic an additional "synthetic dimension." A notable aspect here is that the SU(M) symmetric interaction between atoms manifests as "infinite ranged" along the synthetic dimension. We study the many-body physics of fermions with SU(M) symmetric attractive interactions in this system using a combination of analytical field theoretic and numerical density-matrix renormalization-group methods. We uncover the rich ground-state phase diagram of the system, including unconventional phases such as squished baryon fluids, shedding light on many-body physics in low dimensions. Remarkably, changing the parameters entails interesting crossovers and transition; e.g., we show that increasing the magnetic field (that produces the Hall effect) converts a "ferrometallic" state at low fields to a "squished baryon superfluid" (with algebraic pairing correlations) at high fields. We also show that this system provides a unique opportunity to study quantum phase separation in a multiflavor ultracold fermionic system. © 2017 American Physical Society.

Coherent coupling generated by laser light between the hyperfine states of atoms, loaded in a one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice, gives rise to the “synthetic dimension” system which is equivalent to a Hofstadter model in a finite strip of square lattice. An SU(M) symmetric attractive interaction in conjunction with the synthetic gauge field present in this system gives rise to unusual effects. We study the two-body problem of the system using the \ud T-matrix formalism. We show that the two-body ground states pick up a finite momentum and can transform into two-body resonancelike features in the scattering continuum with a large change in the phase shift. As a result, even for this 1D system, a critical amount of attraction is needed to form bound states. These phenomena have spectacular effects on the many-body physics of the system analyzed using the numerical density matrix renormalization group technique. We show that the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states form in the system even for a “balanced” gas and the FFLO momentum of the pairs scales linearly with flux. Considering suitable measures, we investigate interesting properties of these states. We also discuss a possibility of realization of a generalized interesting topological model, called the Creutz ladder.

We investigate few body physics in a cold atomic system with synthetic dimensions (Celi et al., PRL 112, 043001 (2014)) which realizes a Hofstadter model with long-ranged interactions along the synthetic dimension. We show that the problem can be mapped to a system of particles (with $SU(M)$ symmetric interactions) which experience an $SU(M)$ Zeeman field at each lattice site {\em and} a non-Abelian $SU(M)$ gauge potential that affects their hopping from one site to another. This mapping brings out the possibility of generating {\em non-local} interactions (interaction between particles at different physical sites). It also shows that the non-Abelian gauge field, which induces a flavor-orbital coupling, mitigates the "baryon breaking" effects of the Zeeman field. For $M$ particles, the $SU(M)$ singlet baryon which is site localized, is "deformed" to be a nonlocal object ("squished" baryon) by the combination of the Zeeman and the non-Abelian gauge potential, an effect that we conclusively demonstrate by analytical arguments and exact (numerical) diagonalization studies. These results not only promise a rich phase diagram in the many body setting, but also suggests possibility of using cold atom systems to address problems that are inconceivable in traditional condensed matter systems. On increasing the coupling strength ($\lambda$) of a non-Abelian gauge field that induces a generalized Rashba spin-orbit interaction, the topology of the Fermi surface of a homogeneous gas of noninteracting fermions of density $\rho \sim \kf^3$ undergoes a change at a critical value, $\lambda_T \approx \kf$ [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 84}, 014512 (2011)]. In this paper we analyze how this phenomenon affects the size and shape of a cloud of spin-$\half$ fermions trapped in a harmonic potential such as those used in cold atom experiments. We develop an adiabatic formulation, including the concomitant Pancharatnam-Berry phase effects, for the one particle states in the presence of a trapping potential and the gauge field, obtaining approximate analytical formulae for the energy levels for some high symmetry gauge field configurations of interest. An analysis based on the local density approximation reveals that, for a given number of particles, the cloud shrinks in a {\em characteristic fashion with increasing $\lambda$}. For an isotropic harmonic trap, the local density approximation predicts a spherical cloud for all gauge field configurations, which are anisotropic in general. We show, via a calculation of the cloud shape using exact eigenstates, that for certain gauge field configurations there is systematic and observable anisotropy in the cloud shape that increases with increasing gauge coupling $\lambda$. These results should be useful in the design of cold atom experiments with fermions in non-Abelian gauge fields. An important spin-off of our adiabatic formulation is that it reveals exciting possibilities for the cold-atom realization of interesting condensed matter Hamiltonians (eg. quantum hall spherical geometry) by using a non-Abelian gauge field in conjunction with another potential., Comment: 10 Pages, 4 figures

To trace the origin of time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB) in Re-based superconductors, we performed comparative muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($\mu$SR) studies of superconducting noncentrosymmetric Re$_{0.82}$Nb$_{0.18}$ ($T_c = 8.8$ K) and centrosymmetric Re ($T_c = 2.7$ K). In Re$_{0.82}$Nb$_{0.18}$, the low temperature superfluid density and the electronic specific heat evidence a fully-gapped superconducting state, whose enhanced gap magnitude and specific-heat discontinuity suggest a moderately strong electron-phonon coupling. In both Re$_{0.82}$Nb$_{0.18}$ and pure Re, the spontaneous magnetic fields revealed by zero-field $\mu$SR below $T_c$ indicate time-reversal symmetry breaking and thus unconventional superconductivity. The concomitant occurrence of TRSB in centrosymmetric Re and noncentrosymmetric Re$T$ ($T$ = transition metal), yet its preservation in the isostructural noncentrosymmetric superconductors Mg$_{10}$Ir$_{19}$B$_{16}$ and Nb$_{0.5}$Os$_{0.5}$, strongly suggests that the local electronic structure of Re is crucial for understanding the TRSB superconducting state in Re and Re$T$.
