1. Evaluating Dripper-Plants Spacing for Improving Tomato Yield and Water Productivity under the Drip-Irrigation System in the Sudanian Climate in Burkina Faso.

Abstract

In Burkina Faso, surface drip irrigation is promoted as a water-saving technique to overcome the decline of agricultural water through the increase of water productivity. However, there is little proof up to now about the suitable dripper-plant spacing optimizing water uptake for high productivity. A field trial was undertaken to assess the effects of the dripper-plant spacing in improving yield and water productivity. The design was complete randomized blocs in four replications with the dripper-plant spacing of 0, 5, 10, and 15 cm. It is shown that placing the dripper 15 cm away from the plant resulted in higher water distribution, fruit size, and productivity. The increase of 91%, 131%, 51%, and 11% was registered for wetted area, fruit length, fruit diameter, and fruit weight, respectively. Yield and water productivity increased up to 143%. Implementing the system of drip irrigation at the dripper-plant spacing of 15 cm should be suggested for improving both yield and water productivity in the dry areas. The distance between the dripper and the plant is an important component for designing and implementing a drip-irrigation system for a specific crop on a specific soil since the crop water uptake and productivity depend on this parameter. Up to now, there is no evidence of suitable distance for fruits, more precisely for tomatoes. Technicians are implementing the drip system and farmers are still producing based on an old belief suggesting that the dripper should be as close as possible to the plant. The present study tested different distances (0, 5, 10, and 15 cm) between the dripper and the plant in an experimental field to identify the optimal spacing. Based on the obtained data, this paper suggests that the spacing of 15 cm between dripper and plant is adapted for improving water productivity and yield, and it should be adopted to optimize the efficiency of the drip-irrigation system for field-grown tomatoes. Abstract

Background: In West Africa, natural ecosystems such as woodlands are the main source for energy, building poles and livestock fodder. They probably behave like net carbon sinks, but there are only few studies focusing on their carbon exchange with the atmosphere. Here, we have analyzed CO2 fluxes measured for 17 months by an eddy-covariance system over a degraded woodland in northern Benin. Specially, temporal evolution of the fluxes and their relationships with the main environmental factors were investigated between the seasons. Results: This study shows a clear response of CO2 absorption to photosynthetic photon flux density (Qp), but it varies according to the seasons. After a significant and long dry period, the ecosystem respiration (R) has increased immediately to the first significant rains. No clear dependency of ecosystem respiration on temperature has been observed. The degraded woodlands are probably the "carbon neutral" at the annual scale. The net ecosystem exchange (NEE) was negative during wet season and positive during dry season, and its annual accumulation was equal to +29 ± 16 g C m-2. The ecosystem appears to be more efficient in the morning and during the wet season than in the afternoon and during the dry season. Conclusions: This study shows diurnal and seasonal contrasted variations in the CO2 fluxes in relation to the alternation between dry and wet seasons. The Nangatchori site is close to the equilibrium state according to its carbon exchanges with the atmosphere. The length of the observation period was too short to justify the hypothesis about the "carbon neutrality" of the degraded woodlands at the annual scale in West Africa. Besides, the annual net ecosystem exchange depends on the intensity of disturbances due to the site management system. Abstract

Turbulent CO2 exchanges between a cultivated Sudanian savanna and the atmosphere were measured during 29 months (August 2007-December 2009) by an eddy-covariance system in North-Western Benin, West Africa. The site (Lat 9.74° N, Long 1.60° E, Alt: 449 m) is the one of three sites fitted out by the international AMMA-CATCH program. The flux station footprint area is mainly composed of herbs and crops with some sparse trees and shrubs. Fluxes data were completed by an inventory of dominating species around the tower and the meteorological measurements. Flux response to climatic and edaphic factors was studied. Water was found the main controlling factor of ecosystem dynamics: much larger uptake was found in wet than dry season. During wet season, a very clear answer of net CO2 fluxes to photosynthetic photon fluxes density (PPFD) was observed. A low limitation in response to saturation deficit and soil water variability was however observed. The total ecosystem respiration (TER) was found highly dependent on soil moisture below 0.1 m³ m-3, but saturates above this threshold. The average annual carbon sequestration was 232 ± 27 gC m-2 with its inter-annual variability mainly controlled by TER. Abstract

Summary: During the last quarter of the 20th century, West Africa underwent a particularly intense and generalized drought. During this period, the biggest drops in streamflow were observed in the Sudanian zone rather than in the Sahelian zone, but the reasons are still poorly understood. In 2000, a meso-scale hydrological observatory was set up in the sub-humid Sudanian zone of the Upper Ouémé Valley (Benin). Three embedded catchments of 12–586km2 located on a crystalline bedrock were intensively instrumented to document the different terms of the water budget and to identify the main streamflow generating processes and base-flow mechanisms at different scales. Geophysical, hydrological and geochemical data were collected throughout the catchments from 2002 to 2006. Crossing these data helped define their hydrological functioning. The region has seasonal streamflow, and the permanent groundwater in the weathered mantle does not drain to rivers, instead, seasonal perched groundwaters are the major contributor to annual streamflow. The perched groundwaters are mainly located in seasonally waterlogged sandy layers in the headwater bottom-lands called bas-fonds in French-speaking West Africa of 1st order streams. During the period 2003–2006, regolith groundwater recharge ranged between 10% and 15% of the annual rainfall depth. Depletion of permanent groundwater during the dry season is probably explained by local evapotranspiration which was seen not to be limited to gallery forests. During the 4-year study period, a reduction of 20% in annual rainfall led to a 50% reduction in streamflow. This reduction was observed in the two components of the flow: direct runoff and drainage of perched groundwater. Thanks to the comprehensive dataset obtained, the results obtained for the Donga experimental catchment are now being extrapolated to the whole upper Ouémé valley, which can be considered as representative of sub-humid Sudanian rivers flowing on a crystalline basement, for example, the upper courses of several major West African rivers (Senegal, Niger, Bani, and Volta). Abstract

Summary: The study quantifies the relationships at local scale between phenology and determinants of climate and soil water resources at two sites located along the latitudinal gradient of West Africa, one in the central Sahel (Mali), the other in the Sudanian bioclimatic zone (Benin). The aim is to improve our knowledge on possible vegetation response to possible climate change. Within the Sudanian site, average annual rainfall is 1200mm, extending from April to October, while, in the Sahelian site, it is 370mm, occurring from June to September. Physical data were collected from the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis research programme. The phenology of the dominant species was monitored in four types of vegetation cover at the wetter site, and in three types of vegetation cover at the drier site. For each sampled plant, leafing, flowering and fruiting were recorded as binary variables in terms of the presence/absence of phenophases. A small proportion of the variability of each phenophase occurrence is explained by the logit models. However, rainfall rise is significantly linked to leafing probability increase in the Sahelian site but not in the Sudanian site. Day length extension and temperature decrease are significantly correlated with an increase in leafing in the Sudanian site, but not in the Sahelian. On both sites, the increase in cumulative rainfall is not found to be linked to an increased probability of reproductive phenophases (negative or non-significant relationships). Air temperature is positively correlated with flowering rate in the Sudanian site, but, all other factors being constant, no climate factors are found to be highly significant of flowering occurrence in the Sahel. Fruiting probability is positively correlated mainly with temperature within the Sahelian site. Leafing occurrence is positively correlated with soil moisture in the 0–1m layer for the Sudanian site, but not for the Sahelian site. Significant relationships between fruiting occurrence and soil moisture may reflect a prior selection of plants on fruiting period that maximizes seed dispersion and germination differently at the two sites. While vegetative and reproduction schedules may be determined by specific genetic factors, the physical environment controls the possibility of their expression. Reduction of the rainfall amount and intensity may increase reproduction rates in wet areas. Although this factor should decrease leafing rate, it does not influence reproduction at dry sites, except through the decrease in air humidity. In wetter areas, increasing temperature may reduce leafing, but may increase reproduction rates. 6. Effect of fallow improvement on the nematode community in the Sudanian region of Senegal

Abstract

A 4-year trial was conducted in the Sudanian area of Senegal to study how the manipulation of the plant composition of a natural fallow might increase soil fertility. The influence of fencing combined with stump removal or planting of Andropogon gayanus on the nematode communities was studied. Apart from fencing, all intervention favoured the multiplication of the plant parasitic nematodes for the duration of the trial. Fencing significantly reduced nematode abundance and modified the balance between the species in the community. The population of Scutellonema cavenessi, a serious pest of food crops in the region, was dramatically reduced to the benefit of the weaker pathogen, Helicotylenchus dihystera. Planting Andropogon increased the H. dihystera population slightly. Disappearance of ligneous plant material by stump removal was associated with the greatest increase in the proportion of S. cavenessi. The results suggested that the soil disturbance when planting, removing stumps, or even grazing could affect the nematode community in the topsoil layer, resulting in a decrease in H. dihystera. This species did not recover during a 4-year fallow, even if a suitable situation was promoted through fencing or the planting of Andropogon, a host plant of H. dihystera. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Access to drinking water in West Africa is today a major challenge for development. In this part of the continent constitute by poor countries, lack of resources hampers the implementation of major water mobilization infrastructures. Then, the water demand of the population is satisfied with simplified systems of pumping and distribution of groundwater that are less costly. This increased dependence is however not without consequence in such soil and geological context dominated by crystalline rocks unfavorable to infiltration and groundwater storage and under a climate with a south, north rainfall gradient (tropical climate) which disadvantages higher latitudes regions (Sahel).To face these conditions which can be very restrictive for the availability and sustainability of groundwater, it is necessary for the sustainable management of this resource, to understand the processes that contribute to its renewal. Subjects related to groundwater recharge are studied by several scientific disciplines (hydrology, hydrogeology, geophysics), but many questions remain unanswered steel today.This study contributes to a better understanding of the diversity of hydrological processes in West Africa through the study of two sites in the Sahel (north of Burkina) and Sudan zone (north of Benin) on crystalline basement. It offers the contribution of geophysical techniques through the use of methods based on electrical and electromagnetic resistivity measurements whose relevance in the infiltration process studies was already demonstrated by several previous publications. This study shows that it is possible to observe with ERT time-lapse method, the dynamic of resistivity changes in the deeper layers of the subsoil. Similarly, it shows that from a mapping system at key times of the year, it is possible to highlight the lateral variations in resistivity. In these two cases, it bases on complementary data such as groundwater levels and soil moisture to show that the resistivity variations correspond to transfers of water in the soil., L’accès à l'eau potable en Afrique de l'Ouest constitue aujourd'hui un défi majeur pour le développement. Dans cette partie du continent constituée de pays pauvres, le manque de ressources financières est un frein à la construction de grandes infrastructures de stockage et de distribution de l'eau. Pour palier cette situation, la demande en eau de la population est alors satisfaite grâce à des systèmes simplifiés de pompage et de distribution d’eau souterraine qui sont moins coûteux. Cette dépendance accrue n’est toutefois pas sans conséquence dans un contexte géologique et pédologique dominé par des roches cristallines défavorables à l'infiltration et au stockage de l’eau souterraine et où le climat (tropical) avec un gradient de précipitations sud, nord, désavantage les régions de latitudes élevées (Sahel).Dans des conditions aussi restrictives, assurer la disponibilité et la gestion durable des eaux souterraines, nécessite de comprendre les processus qui contribuent à son renouvellement. Certes, les questions liées à la recharge des eaux souterraines font l’objet d’études par plusieurs disciplines scientifiques (hydrologie, hydrogéologie, géophysique), mais de nombreuses questions restent sans réponse jusqu’à nos jours.Cette étude veut contribuer à une meilleure compréhension de la diversité des processus hydrologiques en Afrique de l'Ouest à travers l'étude de deux sites sur socle cristallin, dans le Sahel (nord du Burkina) et la zone soudanienne (Nord du Bénin). Il s’agit d’évaluer l’apport des techniques géophysiques basées sur l’utilisation des mesures de résistivité électrique et électromagnétique dont la pertinence dans les études de processus d'infiltration est évoquée par plusieurs publications antérieures. Cette étude montre qu'il est possible d'observer avec la méthode de tomographie de résistivité électrique en suivi temporel (ERT "time-lapse"), la dynamique des changements de résistivité dans les couches profondes du sous-sol. De même, elle montre qu'à partir de la réalisation de cartes de résistivité par méthode électromagnétique à des moments clés de l'année, il est possible de mettre en évidence les variations latérales de résistivité. Dans les deux cas, la confrontation des résultats obtenus avec des données complémentaires telles que les humidités de sol et les niveaux de nappes montre que les variations de résistivité observées correspondent bien à des transferts d'eau dans le sol.

Abstract

Natural ecosystems in sub-Saharan Africa are experiencing intense changes that will probably modify land surface feedbacks and consequently the regional climate. In this study, we have analyzed water vapor (Q(LE)) and sensible heat (Q(H)) fluxes over a woodland (Bellefoungou, BE) and a cultivated area (Nalohou, NA) in the Sudanian climate of Northern Benin, using 2years (from July 2008 to June 2010) of eddy covariance measurements. The evaporative fraction (EF) response to environmental and surface variables was investigated at seasonal scale. Soil moisture was found to be the main environmental factor controlling energy partitioning. During the wet seasons, EF was rather stable with an average of 0.750.07 over the woodland and 0.700.025 over the cultivated area. This means that 70-75% of the available energy was changed into actual evapotranspiration during the investigated wet seasons depending on the vegetation type. The cumulative annual actual evapotranspiration (AET) varied between 73050mmyr(-1) at the NA site and 104070mmyr(-1) at the BE site. With similar weather conditions at the two sites, the BE site showed 30% higher AET values than the NA site. The sensible heat flux Q(H) at the cultivated site was always higher than that of the woodland site, but observed differences were much less than those of Q(LE). In a land surface conversion context, these differences are expected to impact both atmospheric dynamics and the hydrological cycle. Abstract

Assessing the impact of climate and anthropic changes on the water and energy cycles, mainly rely on the quantification of the transfer between the various land covers and the atmosphere. Nevertheless the land – atmosphere interactions in the West African monsoon dynamic is not yet well understood because of the lack of observations in this region. This thesis focuses on the analysis of the sensible and latent heat fluxes under Sudanian climate. The two studied land covers are a clear forest (Bellefoungou) and a cultivated area (Nalohou), located in northern Benin, during four years (2007-2010). The study sites are a part of the hydro – meteorological AMMA – CATCH observatory.Turbulent fluxes were measured with the eddy covariance technique.The flux partitioning was investigated through the evaporative fraction (EF) and the Bowen ratio (β) at diurnal, seasonal and inter-annual scales. Surface characteristics (surface and aerodynamical conductance) and the decoupling factor were calculated to interpret the dynamic of the actual evapotranspiration.The analysis was performed according to four different stages of the monsoon cycle: dry and wet seasons drying and moistening intermediate stages. At diurnal and seasonal scales, actual evapotranspiration was always higher on the forest than on the cultivated area. It remained non zero during the dry season at Nalohou despite surface conditions which were not favorable to this process. During the wet season, after the monsoon onset, EF remained steady with a mean seasonal value of 0.75 at Bellefoungou and 0.70 at Nalohou for the four studied years. The Bowen ratio was 0.4 and 0.6 respectively, thus the sensible heat flux was significant on the two contrasted vegetation covers during the wet season. The contrasted roughness length of the two vegetation covers led to a highest aerodynamic conductance at the clear forest site. The mixed of crop/fallow was shown to be more efficient than the clear forest regarding wet season transpiration. At the inter-annual scale, no relationship can be evidenced between evapotranspiration and annual rainfall for the studied period (2007-2010), which was rather rainy. Nevertheless, the net radiation explains the main part of turbulent fluxes inter-annual variation.Finally, complete surface atmosphere decoupling was never observed. This property of the surface – atmosphere interface underlines the key role of the surface conditions in the actual evapotranspiration. Our results provide a first estimate of the latent and sensible heat fluxes over a clear forest and a mixed crop/fallow under sudanian climate. They are relevant to land surface models parametrisation or evaluation and to a robust quantification of the water resources for agriculture, the main economic activity in this region., L'impact des modifications climatiques et de l'augmentation de la démographie sur le cycle de l'eau et de l'énergie dans la région ouest africaine passe par la quantification des échanges entre les différents couverts de la surface continentale et l'atmosphère. Toutefois, la compréhension du rôle des interactions entre la surface et l'atmosphère dans la dynamique de la mousson ouest africaine est limitée par le manque d'observations dans cette région. Cette thèse porte sur l'étude des flux turbulents, en particulier l'évapotranspiration réelle, en climat soudanien. Les deux couverts étudiés sont une forêt claire (site de Bellefoungou) et une mosaïque de culture/jachère (site de Nalohou), situés dans la région du Nord – Bénin. On dispose de quatre années de mesures (2007 à 2010). Les sites d'étude font partie de l'observatoire hydro – météorologique AMMA – CATCH.Les données de flux turbulents de l'atmosphère ont été mesurées avec la technique d'eddy covariance. La partition énergétique des flux a été examinée à travers la fraction évaporative (EF) et le rapport de Bowen (β) aux échelles diurne, saisonnière et inter-annuelle. Des caractéristiques de surface (conductance de surface et aérodynamique) et le coefficient de découplage ont été calculés pour interpréter la dynamique de l'évapotranspiration réelle.L'analyse des résultats est basée sur un découpage du cycle saisonnier suivant quatre phases du cycle de la mousson : la saison sèche, la saison humide, les phases d'humidification et d'assèchement de l'atmosphère. Aux échelles diurne et saisonnière, on montre que le taux d'évapotranspiration réelle de la forêt est toujours supérieur à celui de la mosaïque de culture/jachère quelle que soit la saison. L'évapotranspiration réelle demeure non nulle en saison sèche sur le site de Nalohou malgré les conditions de surface peu favorables à ce processus. En saison humide, après le saut de mousson, la partition énergétique des flux atteint un régime stationnaire avec une moyenne égale à 0,75 à Bellefoungou et 0,70 à Nalohou pour les 4 années étudiées. Le rapport de Bowen pris dans le même ordre est environ de 0,4 et 0,6 traduisant ainsi, en dépit des conditions humides, la part non négligeable du flux de chaleur sensible sur les deux couverts végétaux. La différence de rugosité entre les deux couverts végétaux entraîne une conductance aérodynamique nettement supérieure à Bellefoungou par rapport à Nalohou. On montre également que la végétation du site de Nalohou est plus efficace en transpiration pendant la saison humide que celle du site de Bellefoungou. A l'échelle inter-annuelle, on n'a pas pu mettre en évidence une relation entre flux de chaleur latente et pluviométrie pour les quatre années étudiées qui sont toutes des années excédentaires. Cependant nous avons observé que le rayonnement net explique la majeure partie de la variabilité inter-annuelle des flux turbulents.Enfin, nous avons également montré avec le coefficient de découplage que la surface soudanienne et l'atmosphère restent couplées toute l'année. Ce fonctionnement de l'interface surface – atmosphère reflète le rôle majeur que jouent les conditions de surface dans la variabilité saisonnière de l'évapotranspiration réelle. Les résultats issus de cette étude donnent une première estimation des flux de chaleur latente et de chaleur sensible sur une forêt claire et une mosaïque de culture/jachère en climat soudanien. Ils sont d'une importance capitale pour la paramétrisation et la validation des modèles de surface ainsi que pour la quantification robuste de la ressource en eau disponible en surface pour l'agriculture, principale activité génératrice de revenus des populations locales.

Abstract

In a evolving environment - unpredictable regional projections of the climate change, important population growth associated with considerable land use changes - hydrological cycle and water resources are critical issues. This work aims to deepen our knowledge of the Upper Oueme hydrological functioning (Sudanian climate, Benin) taking into account all the terms and processes of the continental hydrological cycle. First, the hydrological functioning is analysed at the hillslope scale using the Hydrus 2D software. Field measurements from the hydrometeorologic observing system AMMA-CATCH are used. The results show that the riparian forest and the deep groundwater form an interactive transpiration system. The river streamflow is simulated by seepage of subsurface lateral flows from the entire hillslope. Then, at mesoscale, the nTopAMMA hydrological model - derived from TopMODEL - is used. Thanks to field measurements, the correlation between the spatial variability of the hydraulic conductivity and the spatial variability of the land use is evidenced. Taking into account this heterogeneity - the spatial variability of hydraulic conductivity - our results show that the evapotranspiration and water storage simulated at the local scale (pixel) depend on the topography in the first place (3/4) ; on the hydraulic conductivity in the second place (1/4). Finally, an upward approach is adopted to analyse the vertical processes and fluxes in the nTopAMMA model. The improvement of the modelling of the hydrological cycle of the Upper Oueme watershed with nTopAMMA require : (i) the consideration of watershed heterogeneities, (ii) the modification of the evapotranspiration modelling, (iii) the diversification of the evapotranspirationsources and (iv) the integration of the deep groundwater reservoir.; Dans un contexte de changement climatique dont les projections régionales sont incertaines, de forte variabilité inter-annuelle du cycle hydrologique, de forte croissance démographique et de changement d’occupation des sols, les questions relatives au cycle hydrologique et à la ressource en eau en Afrique de l’Ouest sont cruciales. Dans un tel contexte, ce travail de thèse approfondit la connaissance du fonctionnement hydrologique du bassin versant de l’Ouémé supérieur (situé en climat soudanien au Bénin), en considérant l’ensemble des termes et des processus du cycle hydrologique. Dans un premier temps, le fonctionnement hydrologique de l’Ouémé supérieur est analysé à l’échelle d’un versant grâce au modèle Hydrus 2D. Cette analyse de processus s’appuie sur un ensemble completde mesures (précipitations, évapotranspiration, humidité du sol, niveau piézométrique, débit en rivière) obtenues dans le cadre de l’observatoire hydrométéorologique AMMA-CATCH. Les simulations montrent que la ripisylve vidange la nappe profonde et la déconnecte ainsi du réseau hydrographique. L’apport d’eau de la nappe profonde permet une transpiration de la ripisylve toute l’année, y compris en saison sèche. Les écoulements en rivière ne sont pas produits uniquement par exfiltration d’écoulements latéraux de subsurface, les bas-fonds jouent probablement un rôle. A méso-échelle, nous cherchons à quantifier l’impact de la variabilité spatiale de la conductivité hydraulique à saturation sur le bilan hydrologique et l’évapotranspiration. Le modèle numérique utilisé est nTopAMMA, formalisme dérivé de TopMODEL. A partir de mesures de terrain, nous avons mis en évidence que la variabilité spatiale de la conductivité hydraulique à saturation est corrélée à l’occupation du sol du bassin d’étude. La prise en compte de cette variabilité spatiale dans le modèle nTopAMMA montre que l’état hydrique et l’évapotranspiration simulés localement par le modèle dépendent aux trois-quarts de la topographie et pour un quart de la conductivité hydraulique à saturation. Adoptant une approche ascendante, nous confrontons la représentation élaborée à l’échelle du versant à la modélisation hydrologique à méso-échelle. 12. Long term observations of carbon dioxide exchange over cultivated savanna under a Sudanian climate in Benin (West Africa)

Abstract

Turbulent CO2 exchanges between a cultivated Sudanian savanna and the atmosphere were measured during 29 months (August 2007-December 2009) by an eddy-covariance system in North-Western Benin, West Africa. The site (Lat 9.74 degrees N, Long 1.60 degrees E, Alt: 449 m) is the one of three sites fitted out by the international AMMA-CATCH program. The flux station footprint area is mainly composed of herbs and crops with some sparse trees and shrubs. Fluxes data were completed by an inventory of dominating species around the tower and the meteorological measurements. Flux response to climatic and edaphic factors was studied. Water was found the main controlling factor of ecosystem dynamics: much larger uptake was found in wet than dry season. During wet season, a very clear answer of net CO2 fluxes to photosynthetic photon fluxes density (PPFD) was observed. A low limitation in response to saturation deficit and soil water variability was however observed. The total ecosystem respiration (TER) was found highly dependent on soil moisture below 0.1 m(3) m(-3), but saturates above this threshold. The average annual carbon sequestration was 232 +/- 27 gC m(-2) with its inter-annual variability mainly controlled by TER. Finally, the ecosystem appeared more efficient during morning and wet season than during afternoon and dry period.

Abstract

In West Africa, millions of people rely on water resources exposed to the monsoon variability. In this context, the aim of this thesis is to better understand hydrological processes in bedrock areas, and more particularly to estimate the role of lateral redistribution of soil water by the interactions between underground reservoirs, vegetation and atmosphere, using hydrogeological prospection and modeling at field and catena scale. This work is supported by the experimental device implemented in the small Ara catchment in the framework of the AMMA-CATCH observatory. The use of the ParFlow-CLM model allows the simulation of transfers in the saturated and the vadose zone by solving the Richards equation in 3D. The model was forced using observed atmospheric forcing at the surface. We first identify influential parameters for vertical water transfers. Then a spatial characterization of these parameters is carried out. The 1D version of the Parflow-CLM model is assessed using observed data. We show that the model provides relevant times series of the surface energy balance and of soil water distribution as compared to the observations. The impact of the spatial variability of the hydraulic parameters at the field scale (, Dans un contexte où des millions de personnes dépendent de la ressource en eau exposée au caprice de la mousson en Afrique de l'Ouest, ce travail de thèse vise à mieux appréhender les processus hydrologiques en zone de socle, et notamment à évaluer le rôle de la redistribution latérale de l'eau dans le sol par les interactions entre les réservoirs souterrains, la végétation et l'atmosphère, par la caractérisation et la modélisation à l'échelle de la parcelle et du versant. Ce travail s'appuie sur le dispositif expérimental déployé dans le petit bassin versant de l'Ara dans le cadre de l'observatoire AMMA-CATCH. La mise en oeuvre du modèle ParFlow-CLM permet de simuler les transferts dans la zone saturée et la zone non saturée par la résolution de l'équation de Richards en 3D, en étant conditionné par un forçage atmosphérique en surface. Après avoir identifié les paramètres influents pour les transferts verticaux, une caractérisation spatiale de ces paramètres a été menée. La configuration du modèle a ensuite été évaluée en 1D. Il est montré que le modèle reproduit de manière pertinente les séries temporelles du bilan d'énergie et la distribution de l'eau dans le sol. L'effet de la variabilité spatiale des paramètres hydrodynamiques est ensuite étudié à l'échelle de la parcelle. Enfin, en incluant les géométries de socle connues et une distribution de végétation, les transferts horizontaux souterrains sont mis en évidence avec la formation de zones sèches ou humides en relation avec des distributions spatiales d'évapotranspiration.

Abstract

We review the main results of land-surface studies obtained in the three sites of the long-term observing system AMMA-CATCH. Runoff in the Sahel enhances the variability of energy partitioning between non-infiltrative areas where sensible heat is dominant and infiltrative areas where soil water availability increases the latent flux. In terms of water resources, an increase in runoff over the past 50 years, already reported for the exoreic Sahel, was revealed in the endoreic Sahel. In the Sudanian domain, the subsurface origin of streamflow could explain its decrease over the same period. Copyright © 2011 Royal Meteorological Society.

Abstract

International audience; We review the main results of land-surface studies obtained in the three sites of the long-term observing system AMMA-CATCH. Runoff in the Sahel enhances the variability of energy partitioning between non-infiltrative areas where sensible heat is dominant and infiltrative areas where soil water availability increases the latent flux. In terms of water resources, an increase in runoff over the past 50 years, already reported for the exoreic Sahel, was revealed in the endoreic Sahel. In the Sudanian domain, the subsurface origin of streamflow could explain its decrease over the same period.

Abstract

The study quantifies the relationships at local scale between phenology and determinants of climate and soil water resources at two sites located along the latitudinal gradient of West Africa, one in the central Sahel (Mali), the other in the Sudanian bioclimatic zone (Benin). The aim is to improve our knowledge on possible vegetation response to possible climate change. Within the Sudanian site, average annual rainfall is 1200 mm, extending from April to October, while, in the Sahelian site, it is 370 mm, occurring from June to September. Physical data were collected from the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis research programme. The phenology of the dominant species was monitored in four types of vegetation cover at the wetter site, and in three types of vegetation cover at the drier site. For each sampled plant, leafing, flowering and fruiting were recorded as binary variables in terms of the presence/absence of phenophases. A small proportion of the variability of each phenophase occurrence is explained by the logit models. However, rainfall rise is significantly linked to leafing probability increase in the Sahelian site but not in the Sudanian site. Day length extension and temperature decrease are significantly correlated with an increase in leafing in the Sudanian site, but not in the Sahelian. On both sites, the increase in cumulative rainfall is not found to be linked to an increased probability of reproductive phenophases (negative or non-significant relationships). Air temperature is positively correlated with flowering rate in the Sudanian site, but, all other factors being constant, no climate factors are found to be highly significant of flowering occurrence in the Sahel. Fruiting probability is positively correlated mainly with temperature within the Sahelian site. Leafing occurrence is positively correlated with soil moisture in the 0-1 m layer for the Sudanian site, but not for the Sahelian site. Significant relationships between fruiting occurrence and soil moisture may reflect a prior selection of plants on fruiting period that maximizes seed dispersion and germination differently at the two sites. While vegetative and reproduction schedules may be determined by specific genetic factors, the physical environment controls the possibility of their expression. Reduction of the rainfall amount and intensity may increase reproduction rates in wet areas. Although this factor should decrease leafing rate, it does not influence reproduction at dry sites, except through the decrease in air humidity. In wetter areas, increasing temperature may reduce leafing, but may increase reproduction rates. Cover reduction may have an impact on local physical factors and, consequently, probably also affects vegetation phenology. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

Background : In West Africa, natural ecosystems such as woodlands are the main source for energy, building poles and livestock fodder. They probably behave like net carbon sinks, but there are only few studies focusing on their carbon exchange with the atmosphere. Here, we have analyzed CO2 fluxes measured for 17 months by an eddy-covariance system over a degraded woodland in northern Benin. Specially, temporal evolution of the fluxes and their relationships with the main environmental factors were investigated between the seasons. Results : This study shows a clear response of CO2 absorption to photosynthetic photon flux density (Qp), but it varies according to the seasons. After a significant and long dry period, the ecosystem respiration (R) has increased immediately to the first significant rains. No clear dependency of ecosystem respiration on temperature has been observed. The degraded woodlands are probably the “carbon neutral” at the annual scale. The net ecosystem exchange (NEE) was negative during wet season and positive during dry season, and its annual accumulation was equal to +29 ± 16 g C m−2. The ecosystem appears to be more efficient in the morning and during the wet season than in the afternoon and during the dry season. Conclusions : This study shows diurnal and seasonal contrasted variations in the CO2 fluxes in relation to the alternation between dry and wet seasons. The Nangatchori site is close to the equilibrium state according to its carbon exchanges with the atmosphere. The length of the observation period was too short to justify the hypothesis about the “carbon neutrality” of the degraded woodlands at the annual scale in West Africa. Besides, the annual net ecosystem exchange depends on the intensity of disturbances due to the site management system. Further research works are needed to define a woodland management policy that might keep these ecosystems as carbon sinks.
