BACKGROUND: Hyperphosphatemia is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). Whereas clinical and observational studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of sucroferric oxyhydroxide (SO) in controlling serum phosphorus (sP) in ESKD, data on the real-world impact of switching to SO in patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD) are limited. In this retrospective database analysis, we examine the impact of SO on sP management over a 1-year period among PD patients prescribed SO as part of routine clinical care. METHODS: We analyzed de-identified data from adults on PD in Fresenius Kidney Care clinics who were prescribed SO monotherapy between May 2018 and December 2019 as part of routine clinical management. Changes from baseline in sP levels, phosphate binder (PB) pill burden, and laboratory parameters were evaluated during the four consecutive 91-day intervals of SO treatment. RESULTS: The mean age of the 402 patients who completed 1 year of SO was 55.2 years at baseline, and they had been on PD for an average of 19.9 months. SO was initiated with no baseline PB recorded in 36.1% of patients, whereas the remaining 257 patients were switched to SO from sevelamer (39.7%), calcium acetate (30.4%), lanthanum (1.2%), ferric citrate (14.0%), or more than one PB (14.8%). Mean sP at baseline was 6.26 mg/dL. After being prescribed SO, the percentage of patients achieving sP ≤ 5.5 mg/dL increased from 32.1% (baseline) to 46.5-54.0% during the 1-year follow-up, whereas the mean number of PB pills taken per day decreased from 7.7 at baseline (among patients on a baseline PB) to 4.6 to 5.4. Serum phosphorus and PB pill burden decreased regardless of changes in residual kidney function over the 12-month period. Similar results were observed for the full cohort (976 patients who either completed or discontinued SO during the 1-year follow-up). CONCLUSIONS: Patients on PD who were prescribed SO as part of routine care for phosphorus management experienced significant reductions in SP and PB pills per day and improvements in sP target achievement, suggesting the effectiveness of SO on SP management with a concurrent reduction in pill burden.

Development of high yielding cowpea varieties coupled with good taste and rich in essential minerals can promote consumption and thus nutrition and profitability. The sweet taste of cowpea grain is determined by its sugar content, which comprises mainly sucrose and galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) including raffinose and stachyose. However, GOS are indigestible and their fermentation in the colon can produce excess intestinal gas, causing undesirable bloating and flatulence. In this study, we aimed to examine variation in grain sugar and mineral concentrations, then map quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and estimate genomic-prediction (GP) accuracies for possible application in breeding. Grain samples were collected from a multi-parent advanced generation intercross (MAGIC) population grown in California during 2016-2017. Grain sugars were assayed using high-performance liquid chromatography. Grain minerals were determined by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry and combustion. Considerable variation was observed for sucrose (0.6-6.9%) and stachyose (2.3-8.4%). Major QTLs for sucrose (QSuc.vu-1.1), stachyose (QSta.vu-7.1), copper (QCu.vu-1.1) and manganese (QMn.vu-5.1) were identified. Allelic effects of major sugar QTLs were validated using the MAGIC grain samples grown in West Africa in 2017. GP accuracies for minerals were moderate (0.4-0.58). These findings help guide future breeding efforts to develop mineral-rich cowpea varieties with desirable sugar content.

(1) Background: Clinical results on the effects of excess sugar consumption on insulin sensitivity are conflicting, possibly due to differences in sugar type and the insulin sensitivity index (ISI) assessed. Therefore, we compared the effects of consuming four different sugars on insulin sensitivity indices derived from oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT). (2) Methods: Young adults consumed fructose-, glucose-, high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS)-, sucrose-, or aspartame-sweetened beverages (SB) for 2 weeks. Participants underwent OGTT before and at the end of the intervention. Fasting glucose and insulin, Homeostatic Model Assessment-Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR), glucose and insulin area under the curve, Surrogate Hepatic Insulin Resistance Index, Matsuda ISI, Predicted M ISI, and Stumvoll Index were assessed. Outcomes were analyzed to determine: (1) effects of the five SB; (2) effects of the proportions of fructose and glucose in all SB. (3) Results: Fructose-SB and the fructose component in mixed sugars negatively affected outcomes that assess hepatic insulin sensitivity, while glucose did not. The effects of glucose-SB and the glucose component in mixed sugar on muscle insulin sensitivity were more negative than those of fructose. (4) Conclusion: the effects of consuming sugar-SB on insulin sensitivity varied depending on type of sugar and ISI index because outcomes assessing hepatic insulin sensitivity were negatively affected by fructose, and outcomes assessing muscle insulin sensitivity were more negatively affected by glucose.

A series of sulfonated carbon acid catalysts with strong acidity was prepared by simultaneous carbonization and sulfonation of biomass sucrose in the presence of the organic sulfonating agent sulfosalicylic acid under hydrothermal conditions at temperatures ranging from 150 to 200 °C. It was found from FTIR and XPS spectra that the surface of carbon was efficiently functionalized with –SO3H groups. Research on the mechanism of the sulfonation process indicated that the intermediate 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (5-HMF), which was easily hydrolyzed from sucrose, was prone to carbonization and functionalized with –SO3H groups simultaneously. Compared with 5-HMF and fructose used as the initial carbon precursor, the slow hydrolysis of sucrose to intermediate 5-HMF to suppress its rapid carbonization is favorable for the efficient grafting of –SO3H groups when sucrose is used as the initial carbon precursor. The prepared sulfonated carbons were evaluated as acid catalysts in a typical ester hydrolysis reaction, namely, hydrolysis of ethyl acetate. The sulfonic acid groups were identified to be the active sites and quantified by a cation-exchange process. The activity of the sulfonated carbon was primarily correlated with the total number of active sites. However, when the total number of the –SO3H groups did not change, higher activities were shown on the sulfonated carbon with higher surface S content. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The profound contamination of reservoirs triggered by industrial dyes and the growing phenomenon of antibiotic-resistant bacteria present substantial risks to both the environment and human health. Conventional approaches to water treatment and microbiological disinfection can frequently become ineffective, expensive, and detrimental to the environment, and this issue underscores the need for novel materials that possess refined photocatalytic and antibacterial characteristics that thrive efficiently in a setting of visible light. An innovative nanostructured nanocomposite, Mo-CeO 2 @C, was synthesized using a green chemistry method coupled with Mo-CeO 2 nanoparticles and pristine CeO 2. The impact of Ce, Mo, and carbon-based nanocomposites has been validated by leveraging XRD, FTIR, UV–vis spectra, and FE-SEM/EDX. The sunlight-mediated photodegradation performance of carbon-based nanocomposite exhibited a superior photodegradation efficiency of 99.5 %, higher than others. The photocatalytic activity of M.B. dye concentration, catalyst dosage, scavenger test, and recyclability were also conducted, which confirm the optimal catalyst loading of 20 mg, dye concentration 40 ppm, and pH 8 with reusability up to sixth cycles. The carbon-coated doped nanocomposite displays superior antibacterial efficacy against gram-positive S. aureus , gram-negative E. coli , and P. vulgaris bacteria in comparison to CeO 2 and Mo-doped CeO 2. This may be attributed to the combined effects of the generation of reactive oxygen species (R.O.S.) and the intrinsic characteristics of the dopant and carbon matrix. The results of our research emphasize the potential of carbon-based nanoparticles as versatile agents in the realms of environmental rehabilitation and biomedical research. [Display omitted] Aqueous solutions of long-chain water-soluble sucrose ester surfactants exhibit non-trivial response to temperature variations, revealing a peak in viscosity around 40–50 °C. While previous investigations have explored the structures within sucrose stearate systems at various constant temperatures, a comprehensive understanding of the entire temperature dependence and the underlying molecular factors, contributing to this phenomenon is currently missing. Temperature dependent properties and supramolecular structures formed in aqueous solutions of commercial sucrose palmitate were examined using SAXS/WAXS, DSC, optical microscopy, rheological measurements, NMR, and cryo-TEM. The underlying mechanism governing this unusual behavior is revealed and is shown to relate to the mono- to di-esters ratio in the solutions. Solutions primarily containing sucrose monoesters (monoesters molecules ≳ 98% of all surfactant molecules) exhibit behavior typical of nonionic surfactants, with minimal changes with temperature. In contrast, the coexistence of mono- and di-esters results in the formation of discrete monodisperse diester particles and a network of partially fused diester particles at low temperature. As the temperature approaches the diesters' melting point, wormlike mixed micelles form, causing a viscosity peak. The height of this peak increases significantly with the diester concentration. Further temperature increase leads to fluidization of surfactant tails and formation of branched micelles, while excess diester molecules phase separate into distinct droplets. Binge eating disorder is the most prevalent eating disorder, affecting both sexes but more commonly found in women. Given the frequent co-occurrence of psychiatric disorders, this study aimed to establish a standardized experimental intermittent protocol to investigate overeating associated with depression. A 10-day protocol induced uncontrolled eating behavior in C57BL/6J female mice. The first experiment included the following groups: naive group (chow ad libitum), control group (chow and sucrose solution ad libitum), and fasting groups (16 and 20 h) exposed to an intermittent sucrose solution (10 %) and chow regimen. Subsequently, the feeding test, open field test, elevated plus maze test, tail suspension test, and light/dark conflict test were conducted. Furthermore, monoamine oxidase (MAO) A and B activities in brain structures and plasma corticosterone levels were assessed. Food overconsumption and depressive-like behavior were observed in both sucrose fasting groups, while risk-taking behaviors were specifically observed in the 20-hour fasting sucrose group. While both fasting sucrose groups caused reduced hippocampal MAO-A activity, only the F20 sucrose group inhibited MAO-B in the cortex and hypothalamus. Moreover, both fasting sucrose groups exhibited elevated corticosterone levels. In a separate design (Experiment 2), groups with 16 and 20 h of fasting alone (without sucrose) did not show the same behavioral results as the intermittent fasting sucrose groups, thus avoiding fasting bias. Based on these results, the 20-hour sucrose fasting group was chosen as the ideal protocol for mimicking overeating behavior associated with depression to investigate future therapeutic approaches for this comorbidity. Summary How carbon (sucrose) and nitrogen (amino acid) accumulation is coordinatively controlled in cereal grains remains largely enigmatic. We found that overexpression of the strigolactone (SL) biosynthesis gene CAROTENOID CLEAVAGE DIOXYGENASE 8 (CCD8) resulted in greater ear diameter and enhanced sucrose and amino acid accumulation in maize kernels. Loss of ZmCCD8 function reduced kernel growth with lower sugar and amino acid concentrations. Transcriptomic analysis showed down‐regulation of the transcription factors ZmMYB42 and ZmMYB63 in ZmCCD8 overexpression alleles and up‐regulation in zmccd8 null alleles. Importantly, ZmMYB42 and ZmMYB63 were negatively regulated by the SL signalling component UNBRANCHED 3, and repressed expression of the sucrose transporters ZmSWEET10 and ZmSWEET13c and the lysine/histidine transporter ZmLHT14. Consequently, null alleles of ZmMYB42 or ZmMYB63 promoted accumulation of soluble sugars and free amino acids in maize kernels, whereas ZmLHT14 overexpression enhanced amino acid accumulation in kernels. Moreover, overexpression of the SL receptor DWARF 14B resulted in more sucrose and amino acid accumulation in kernels, down‐regulation of ZmMYB42 and ZmMYB63 expression, and up‐regulation of ZmSWEETs and ZmLHT14 transcription. Together, we uncover a distinct SL signalling pathway that regulates sucrose and amino acid accumulation in kernels. Significant association of two SNPs in the 5′ upstream region of ZmCCD8 with ear and cob diameter implicates its potential in breeding toward higher yield and nitrogen efficiency. SUMMARY Cotton seed development and fiber elongation are the inseparable and overlapped development processes requiring the continuous supply of sucrose as the direct carbon source. However, little is known about the molecular mechanism of how sucrose is transported from the source tissues (leaves) into growing cotton seeds. Here, we identify the function of a sucrose transporter gene, Sugars Will Eventually be Exported Transporter 10, GhSWEET10 in cotton seed development. GhSWEET10 encodes a functional sucrose transporter, predominantly expressing in the funiculus, inner seedcoat, and endosperm during fiber elongation. GhSWEET10 RNAi plants (GhSWEET10i) accumulated less sucrose and glucose in growing seeds and that led to shorter fibers and smaller seeds, whereas GhSWEET10 overexpressed plants (GhSWEET10OE) had bigger seeds and longer fibers with more sugar accumulation during fiber elongation. GhSWEET10 gene is transcriptionally controlled by the transcription factor GhDOFD45. GhDOFD45 knockout plants (GhDOFD45‐KO) possessed the phenotypes of smaller seeds and shorter fibers like those of GhSWEET10i plants. Furthermore, GhSWEET10 mainly exports the sucrose from the funiculus into developing seeds according to the mimic‐analysis of sucrose transporting. Collectively, all these findings show that GhDOFD45 positively regulates GhSWEET10 expression to mainly transport sucrose from leaves into developing cotton seeds. Our findings also imply that the sucrose transport into enlarging seeds benefits fiber development, and thus GhSWEET10 can be selected as a target of breeding novel cotton varieties with larger and more vigorous seeds. Introduction: Carbohydrate compounds serve multifaceted roles, from energy sources to stress protectants, found across diverse organisms including bacteria, fungi, and plants. Despite this broad importance, the molecular genetic framework underlying carbohydrate biosynthesis pathways, such as starch, sucrose, and glycolysis/gluconeogenesis in Salvia guaranitica , remains largely unexplored. Methods: In this study, the Illumina-HiSeq 2500 platform was used to sequence the transcripts of S. guaranitica leaves, generating approximately 8.2 Gb of raw data. After filtering and removing adapter sequences, 38 million reads comprising 210 million high-quality nucleotide bases were obtained. De novo assembly resulted in 75,100 unigenes, which were annotated to establish a comprehensive database for investigating starch, sucrose, and glycolysis biosynthesis. Functional analyses of glucose-6-phosphate isomerase (SgGPI), trehalose-6-phosphate synthase/phosphatase (SgT6PS), and sucrose synthase (SgSUS) were performed using transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana. Results: Among the unigenes, 410 were identified as putatively involved in these metabolic pathways, including 175 related to glycolysis/gluconeogenesis and 235 to starch and sucrose biosynthesis. Overexpression of SgGPI , SgT6PS , and SgSUS in transgenic A. thaliana enhanced leaf area, accelerated flower formation, and promoted overall growth compared to wild-type plants. Discussion: These findings lay a foundation for understanding the roles of starch, sucrose, and glycolysis biosynthesis genes in S. guaranitica , offering insights into future metabolic engineering strategies for enhancing the production of valuable carbohydrate compounds in S. guaranitica or other plants. Sucrose and glycerol have gained attention as additives for hydrogels, owing to their capacity to exert considerable influence over the physicochemical, mechanical, and biological characteristics of these materials. Herein, these effects on agarose hydrogels (AHs) are explored. A series of AHs are synthesized using sucrose (30% and 300% w/v) and glycerol as additives. The storage modulus (10.0–13.7 kPa) and hydrophilicity of the hydrogels (contact angle < 50°) do not vary significantly with sucrose or glycerol addition. However, sucrose enhances the hydration capacity of the hydrogels by up to 170%, whereas glycerol reduces it. Interestingly, sucrose and glycerol individually do not have bacteriostatic effects against Staphylococcus epidermidis, but their combination significantly (p ≤ 0.001) inhibits the growth of both S. epidermidis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa by 63% and 29%, respectively, in comparison to native agarose. Cytotoxicity testing on NIH/3T3 murine fibroblasts reveals that sucrose increases cell viability up to 98%, while glycerol reduces it below 60%. Overall, these hydrogels hold promise for antibacterial biomedical applications as wound dressing materials and surface coatings for medical devices and can also be used to formulate bioinks for 3D bioprinting. Sweetened condensed milk (SCM) is a product widely used by both consumers and other food production branches. However, it contains a lot of sucrose. This study aimed to examine the effects provided by sugar substitutes—trehalose, isomaltulose, and polydextrose—upon the SCM sensory profile and valuable quality indicators, such as water activity (Aw), viscosity, acidity, crystal size, and Maillard reaction potential (browning index, color change, loss of free AA). The study was performed by making model systems of SCM (MSCM) using the method of reconstitution of powdered ingredients. All the presented carbohydrate compositions in MSCM provided Aw value typical of intermediate-moisture food, which contributes to the long-term shelf life of the product. However, only 2 MSCM showed stability of Aw within a 14-d storage period: a composition of isomaltulose and trehalose (each at 22.55%), and a composition of trehalose (28.19%), sucrose (5.64%), polydextrose (5.64%), and isomaltulose (5.64%). Trehalose and polydextrose in MSCM with monocarbohydrate added fraction demonstrated their high structure-forming ability, expressed in high values of dynamic viscosity (>30 Pa·s). The MSCM containing a predominant amount of trehalose in the carbohydrate compositions (≥50%) showed lower average crystal size (<16 μm) compared with MSCM with di- and tetra-carbohydrate added fractions with predominant amounts of isomaltulose or polydextrose. Isomaltulose and polydextrose added to MSCM led to pronounced browning, whereas trehalose and sucrose reduced this effect in MSCM with di- and tetra-carbohydrate added fractions. Polydextrose added at 22.55% to carbohydrate fraction of MSCM caused bitterness, whereas the addition at 5.64% did not affect the taste. Based on the results of all the research conducted, the optimal carbohydrate compositions to produce SCM with fewer calories, lower sucrose content, and stable, adequate values of processing and sensory properties were trehalose (22.55%) with isomaltulose (22.55%), and trehalose (28.19%) with sucrose (5.64%), polydextrose (5.64%), and isomaltulose (5.64%). Objectives: Binge eating disorder (BED) is the most prevalent eating disorder associated with multiple adverse health effects, especially mental health issues, including substance use disorders and mood and anxiety disorders. Given these high comorbidities, the objective of our study was to examine whether bingeing behavior would lead to altered perception of reinforcing properties of EtOH and changes in well-being. Methods: We used a sucrose bingeing model based on an intermittent access paradigm with a two-bottle choice, without fasting, in male and female mice. We examined the effect of 2-week sucrose paradigm on ethanol-reinforcing properties using a conditioned place preference test (CPP). Well-being, anxiety- and depressive-like behavioral tests were performed to assess emotional state following 2 and 8-week sucrose bingeing paradigm. Results: Mice with intermittent access to sucrose developed a binge-like behavior assessed by higher sucrose intake and escalation rate during the 1st hour of access, in comparison with mice with a continuous sucrose access. We show for the first time that sucrose bingeing in mice modifies positive reinforcing effect of EtOH in a CPP paradigm without marked alteration of emotional state. Interestingly, prolonging sucrose access for 8 weeks revealed an exacerbated bingeing behavior in female mice, and some signs of emotional state alterations in female with continuous access. Discussion: In sum, our findings broaden the understanding of behavioral alterations associated with bingeing, highlighting the need to investigate addictive-like properties of palatable food both in male and female mice. The present study evaluated the potential of a saccharide mixture (galactose, glucose, fructose, and sucrose in a 2:1:1:1 ratio) as a chemoattractant (attraction) or/and feeding stimulant (ingestion) for the purple mud crab Scylla tranquebarica. In Experiment I, the S. tranquebarica appetitive response toward the 3%, 5%, or 7% (w/v) saccharide mixture solutions was examined and evaluated by a scoring method. The 5% and 7% treatments yielded the highest mean score (2.05 out of 3.00), with 20% of the S. tranquebarica exhibiting the highest response order (probing movement) in the latter treatment. In Experiment II, the S. tranquebarica feeding response toward the pelleted feeds containing the saccharide mixture at 3%, 5%, or 7% (SAC3, SAC5, or SAC7) was examined and evaluated using a scoring method. No significant difference (P > 0.05) was found among the mean scores of SAC3, SAC5, and SAC7. However, the mean score of the SAC7 diet was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than that of the control feed (without saccharide mixture inclusion), with 25% of the S. tranquebarica ingesting the feed. Summary: Grain chalkiness is an undesirable trait that negatively regulates grain yield and quality in rice. However, the regulatory mechanism underlying chalkiness is complex and remains unclear. We identified a positive regulator of white‐belly rate (WBR). The WBR7 gene encodes sucrose synthase 3 (SUS3). A weak functional allele of WBR7 is beneficial in increasing grain yield and quality. During the domestication of indica rice, a functional G/A variation in the coding region of WBR7 resulted in an E541K amino acid substitution in the GT‐4 glycosyltransferase domain, leading to a significant decrease in decomposition activity of WBR7A (allele in cultivar Jin23B) compared with WBR7G (allele in cultivar Beilu130). The NIL(J23B) and knockout line NIL(BL130)KO exhibited lower WBR7 decomposition activity than that of NIL(BL130) and NIL(J23B)COM, resulting in less sucrose decomposition and metabolism in the conducting organs. This caused more sucrose transportation to the endosperm, enhancing the synthesis of storage components in the endosperm and leading to decreased WBR. More sucrose was also transported to the anthers, providing sufficient substrate and energy supply for pollen maturation and germination, ultimately leading to an increase rate of seed setting and increased grain yield. Our findings elucidate a mechanism for enhancing rice yield and quality by modulating sucrose metabolism and allocation, and provides a valuable allele for improved rice quality. Cherry tomatoes are nutritious food, often processed into long shelf-life preserved foods. However, there is increasing concern about the dangers of high sucrose in traditional preserved fruit. In this paper, the effect of enzyme-assisted osmosis of seven kinds of functional sugars, including psicose, tagatose, isomaltose, trehalose, galactooligosaccharides, isomaltooligosaccharides, and resistant dextrin on cherry tomato was studied. The dry matter content after enzyme treatment and sugar soaking treatment was evaluated. Sensory quality, physicochemical quality, antioxidant capacity, sugar composition, and flavor substances were also measured. The addition of enzymes and functional sugars made cherry tomatoes redder and softer, and increased the soluble solid content (1.45- to 1.67-fold), lycopene content (2.14- to 2.18-fold), total polyphenol content (1.28- to 1.41-fold), and DPPH radical scavenging rate (1.81- to 1.95-fold). Furthermore, the sugar composition and flavor substances were improved. Thus, it is a good choice of adding these functional sugars to produce cherry tomato products with probiotic potential, and this new method can provide a reference for the processing of other fruit products. Objective: Increased intake of sweets or sugar craving may occur in response to chronic stress representing a risk factor for development of eating disorders and obesity. However, no safe treatment of stress‐induced sugar craving is available. In this study we analysed effects of two Lactobacillus strains on food and sucrose intake in mice before and during their exposure to a chronic mild stress (CMS). Research Methods & Procedures: C57Bl6 mice were gavaged daily for 27 days with a mix of L. salivarius (LS) LS7892 and L. gasseri (LG) LG6410 strains or with 0.9% NaCl as a control. Following 10 days of gavage, mice were individually placed into the Modular Phenotypic cages, and after 7 days of acclimation were exposed to a CMS model for 10 days. Food, water and 2% sucrose intakes as well as meal pattern were monitored. Anxiety and depressive‐like behaviour were analysed by standard tests. Results: Exposure of mice to CMS was accompanied by increased size of sucrose intake in the control group likely reflecting the stress‐induced sugar craving. A consistent, about 20% lower total sucrose intake, was observed in the Lactobacilli‐treated group during stress which was mainly due to a reduced number of intakes. Lactobacilli treatment also modified the meal pattern before and during the CMS, showing a decrease of meal number and an increase of meal size with a tendency of reduced total daily food intake. Mild anti‐depressive behavioural effects of the Lactobacilli mix were also present. Conclusion: Supplementation of mice with LS LS7892 and LG LG6410 decreases sugar consumption suggesting a potential utility of these strains against stress‐induced sugar craving. Background/Objectives: Sweet taste preferences are currently targeted to aid with reducing free sugar intakes, but associations between sweet taste liking, sweet food intakes, and sugar intakes are not well established. Methods: UK consumers (n = 179) who were consuming >5% of total energy intakes from free sugars provided several laboratory measures of sweet taste liking, laboratory test meal measures of sweet food choice and sugar intakes, and 3-day food diary measures of free-living free sugar and total sugar intakes. Liking measures included liking for a 1 M sucrose solution, and pleasantness, desire to eat, and sweet taste intensity ratings for seven foods of a range of sweet taste intensities in a taste test. Results: Wide individual differences in sweet taste liking, in liking for a high sweet taste intensity, and in the relationships between sweet taste intensity and sweet taste liking were found. The majority of participants confirmed high liking and increasing liking for increasingly sweet tastes, but differing patterns of responses were also found. Higher liking for sweet foods was associated with increased sweet food selection and consumption at the test meal, and to some degree with free sugar and total sugar consumption in this restricted scenario. However, we found no associations between sweet taste liking, regardless of measure, and either free-living free sugar or total sugar intakes. Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) capacity to synthesize and accumulate soluble carbohydrates that will ultimately contribute to grain filling, either via actual photosynthesis or previously stored reserves, has been largely neglected despite its relevance regarding crop yield. The present work is aimed at studying the effect of photoassimilate availability on the dynamics of production and distribution of soluble carbohydrates in the plant during vegetative and reproductive phases. Plant photoassimilate availability was modified from production crop level in two hybrids during two field experiments by shading or thinning plants, which resulted in a range of intercepted radiation between 20 and 300 MJ per plant and also by removal of the main sink, the capitulum. Plants under higher light availability developed larger leaves and accumulated much more biomass than shaded ones. In general, plant sugar storage increased up to flowering and was highest in the developing capitulum and upper stem internodes. Increasing light availability led to a strong growth promotion that was especially remarkable in the capitulum and stem upper internodes, which precluded an increase in sugar concentration in these parts. Capitulum removal led to sugar remobilization to the plant base, resulting in a strong growth promotion of roots, basal stem internodes, and even in leaves from the lower strata, showing an extremely high plasticity of all sunflower organs in response to photoassimilates. BACKGROUND: Photocatalysis is an efficient method for the removal of organic contaminants in wastewater. In this study, different magnetic photocatalysts for the degradation of organic compounds were prepared. RESULTS: Ti/C/Fe photocatalysts were prepared by supporting TiO2 (20, 40 and 60% w/w) on a carbon/iron oxide (C/Fe) magnetic carrier. Characterization via Raman spectroscopy, X‐ray diffractometry, thermal analysis, X‐ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy and energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy/elemental mapping and magnetic property analysis by vibrating‐sample magnetometry confirmed the presence of TiO2, Fe3O4, Fe3C and char in the photocatalysts as well as their magnetic properties. The results of specific surface area analysis showed that the C/Fe support had a surface area of 183 m2 g−1 and that this area decreased with an increasing amount of supported TiO2, reaching up to 129 m2 g−1. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy characterization revealed that the bandgap values obtained for the photocatalysts (Ti/C/Fe) were lower than 3.2 eV. The prepared photocatalysts showed high efficiency in degrading the contaminants Remazol Black (RB5) (99%), paracetamol (77%) and phenol (90%). Recovery and reuse experiments using RB5 showed that after the fourth reaction, the photocatalytic efficiency was reduced by 50%, and the recovery reached up to 70%. Sedimentation kinetics showed that while only 6% of the TiO2 was deposited, up to 89% of the photocatalysts were deposited. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that the photocatalysts showed excellent photocatalytic efficiency for different contaminants and can be easily and quickly separated from the reaction medium by magnetic separation. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI). Starch biosynthesis involves numerous enzymes and is a crucial metabolic activity in plant storage organs. Sucrose non-fermenting related protein kinase 2 (SnRK2) is an abscisic acid (ABA)-dependent kinase and a significant regulatory enzyme in the ABA signaling pathway. However, whether SnRK2 kinases regulate starch biosynthesis is unclear. In this study, we identified that MeSnRK2.3 , encoding an ABA-dependent kinase, was highly expressed in the storage roots of cassava (Manihot esculenta) and was induced by ABA. Overexpression of MeSnRK2.3 in cassava significantly increased the starch content in the storage roots and promoted plant growth. MeSnRK2.3 was further found to interact with the cassava basic helix–loop–helix 68 (MebHLH68) transcription factor in vivo and in vitro. MebHLH68 directly bound to the promoters of sucrose synthase 1 (MeSUS1), granule-bound starch synthase I a (MeGBSSIa), and starch-branching enzyme 2.4 (MeSBE2.4), thereby up-regulating their transcriptional activities. Additionally, MebHLH68 negatively regulated the transcriptional activity of sucrose phosphate synthase B (MeSPSB). Moreover, MebHLH68 phosphorylated by MeSnRK2.3 up-regulated the transcription activity of MeSBE2.4. These findings demonstrated that the MeSnRK2.3–MebHLH68 module connects the ABA signaling pathway and starch biosynthesis in cassava, thereby providing direct evidence of ABA-mediated participation in the sucrose metabolism and starch biosynthesis pathways. Although faster and powerful, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) often failed to amplify targets efficiently. Numerous PCR enhancers have been used to increase the amplification efficiency of difficult DNA targets. However, there is no systematic comparison of their effects in normal and difficult PCR conditions. In this paper, we have selected nine different PCR enhancers that can promote the PCR amplification efficiency. We have compared their effect in Taq DNA polymerase thermostability, inhibitor resistance, and amplification of various DNA targets. Although the PCR enhancers more or less reduced the amplification efficiency of DNA fragments with moderate GC-content, they were able to improve the amplification efficiency and specificity of GC-rich fragments. Betaine outperformed the other enhancers in amplification of GC-rich DNA fragments, thermostabilizing Taq DNA polymerase, and inhibitor tolerance. Sucrose and trehalose showed similar effect in thermostabilizing Taq DNA polymerase and inhibitor tolerance, while they showed mildest inhibitory effect on normal PCR. For GC-rich region-containing long DNA fragment amplification, 1 M betaine, 0.5 M betaine + 0.2 M sucrose, or 1 M betaine + 0.1 M sucrose can be used to effectively promote the amplification, while keep their negative effect in amplification of normal fragment to a minimal level. The nucleus accumbens (NAc) regulates reward-motivated behavior, but the temporal dynamics of NAc neurons that enable "free-willed" animals to obtain rewards remain elusive. Here, we recorded Ca2+ activity from individual NAc neurons when mice performed self-paced lever-presses for sucrose. NAc neurons exhibited three temporally-sequenced clusters, defined by times at which they exhibited increased Ca2+ activity: approximately 0, −2.5 or −5 sec relative to the lever-pressing. Dopamine D1 receptor (D1)-expressing neurons and D2-neurons formed the majority of the −5-sec versus −2.5-sec clusters, respectively, while both neuronal subtypes were represented in the 0-sec cluster. We found that pre-press activity patterns of D1- or D2-neurons could predict subsequent lever-presses. Inhibiting D1-neurons at −5 sec or D2-neurons at −2.5 sec, but not at other timepoints, reduced sucrose-motivated lever-pressing. We propose that the time-specific activity of D1- and D2-neurons mediate key temporal features of the NAc through which reward motivation initiates reward-seeking behavior. Volitional reward taking emerges through a sequence of preluding events. Yet, the underlying neural mechanism is not fully understood. The effects of voluntary wheel-running exercise in different rodent models of depression remain unclear, and further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms underlying these effects. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to evaluate the currently available findings on whether voluntary wheel-running exercise can alleviate depressive symptoms in five different rodent models of depression. The findings of the comprehensive meta-analysis imply that engaging in voluntary wheel-running exercise has a beneficial effect on alleviating depressive symptoms in rodent models that simulate depression. While further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms and limitations of this intervention future research should aim to conduct larger. Well-designed studies that use standardized protocols and outcome measures. This would help to reduce heterogeneity between studies and improve the overall quality of the evidence base. Additionally, studies should explore the potential mechanisms of action of voluntary wheel-running exercise in treating depression, such as changes in neurotransmitter levels, neuroplasticity, and inflammation. Objective: Bacterial vaginosis is a disease caused by vaginal microecology disorder, which seriously affects female health. At present, there are many drugs to treat BV, and this study aims to compare the efficacy and safety of multiple drugs for BV through a network meta-analysis (NMA). Methods: All studies were sourced from PubMed and Embase databases from the establishment date to April 13, 2023. We evaluated the clinical cure success rate and adverse effects (abnormal increase in vaginal discharge, external genital irritation, and vulvar itching) and performed subgroup analyses of the clinical cure success rate for different modes of administration. All statistical analyses were performed using R and STATA 14.0 software for network meta-analysis. Results: Weincluded42studies thatmetthecriteria, involving a total of8382patients. Network meta-analysis results showed that metronidazole and secnidazole had a higher rate of adverse reactions than placebo (RR 7.06; 95%-CI 2.61-19.10, RR 4.03; 95%-CI1.63-9.98), theadverse reaction rateofprobioticsgroupwaslowerthanthat of metronidazole group (RR 0.44; 95%-CI 0.21-0.93). The clinical cure rate of oral ornidazole was better than clindamycin (RR 16.08; 95%-CI 1.72-150.47), Secnidazole (RR 8.17; 95%-CI 1.66-40.25) and probiotics. Directmeta-analysis results showed that ornidazole had a better clinical cure rate than Secnidazole (RR1.22; 95%-CI 1.10-1.34), oral ornidazole had a better clinical cure rate than Secnidazole (RR 1.23; 95%-CI 1.11-1.36). The clinical cure rate of vaginal application of sucrose was better than metronidazole (RR 1.12; 95%-CI 1.03-1.21) and metronidazole had a lower clinical cure rate than probiotics (RR 0.68; 95%-CI 0.52-0.88). Conclusions: The results of this systematic review and network meta-analysis suggest that ornidazole may be an effective alternative for the treatment of BV, and that sucrose and probiotics are potential BV treatments that need to be validated by more high-quality clinical studies in the future. Practical Application Unlike many commercial sweeteners for which sweetness dose‐response curves have been constructed, honey's sweetness has yet to be quantified. Honey differs from most commercial sweeteners in that it has a robust aroma; this aroma may impact its perceived sweetness. This study quantified the sweetness intensity and the impact of aroma on the perceived sweetness of four different honey varieties (clover, wildflower, alfalfa, and orange) compared to sucrose. Each sweetener evaluated was diluted to six concentrations in water ranging from 12.5 g/L to 125 g/L. Panelists (n = 55) rated the sweetness intensities with and without aroma, in replicate, on the Global Sensory Intensity Scale. Additionally, the volatile organic compounds in the honey samples were profiled using gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis. Honey and sugar were equivalently sweet at a given concentration (g/L), with aroma present (p = 0.251). Additionally, honey and sugar were not equivalently sweet without aroma; aroma significantly increased sweetness intensities for all sweeteners (p = 0.042) and especially honeys. In a 100 g/L solution, the aromas in honey increased its sweetness by 23%–43%, depending on the floral source. Compounds with sweet aroma characteristics were identified at high concentrations in all honey samples using GC/MS analysis, including furfural, benzaldehyde, benzene acetaldehyde, and dimethyl sulfide. Additionally, (S)‐limonene and toluene were present in high quantities in the orange and alfalfa samples. This study can inform appropriate honey usage levels and identify major volatiles that may enhance sweetness.Honey sweetness has not been determined quantitatively, despite the widespread use of honey among consumers and product formulators. Several epidemiological studies have investigated the association between sugar intake, the levels of systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and the risk of hypertension, but findings have been inconsistent. We carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies to examine the associations between sugar intake, hypertension risk, and BP levels. Articles published up to February 2, 2021 were sourced through PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science. Pooled relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using a fixed- or random-effects model. Restricted cubic splines were used to evaluate dose-response associations. Overall, 35 studies were included in the present meta-analysis (23 for hypertension and 12 for BP). Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and artificially sweetened beverages (ASBs) were positively associated with hypertension risk: 1.26 (95% CI, 1.15–1.37) and 1.10 (1.07–1.13) per 250-g/day increment, respectively. For SBP, only SSBs were significant with a pooled β value of 0.24 mmHg (95% CI, 0.12–0.36) per 250 g increase. Fructose, sucrose, and added sugar, however, were shown to be associated with elevated DBP with 0.83 mmHg (0.07–1.59), 1.10 mmHg (0.12–2.08), and 5.15 mmHg (0.09–10.21), respectively. Soil autotoxic chemosensory substances have emerged as the predominant environmental factors constraining the growth, quality, and yield of Codonopsis pilosula in recent years. Among a vast array of chemosensory substances, benzoic acid constitutes the principal chemosensory substance in the successive cultivation of C. pilosula. However, the exploration regarding the stress exerted by benzoic acid on the growth and development of C. pilosula remains indistinct, and there is a scarcity of research on the mechanism of lobetyolin synthesis in C. pilosula. In the current research, it was discovered that exposure to benzoic acid at a concentration of 200 mmol/L conspicuously attenuated the plant height, root length, total length, fresh weight, root weight, root thickness, chlorophyll content, electrolyte osmolality, leaf intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), net photosynthesis rate (Pn), transpiration rate (Tr), and leaf stomatal conductance (Gs) of C. pilosula. Benzoic acid (200 mmol/L) significantly enhanced the activity of root enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), and peroxidase (POD), as well as the accumulation of polysaccharides and lobetyolins (polyacetylene glycosides) in the roots of C. pilosula. In this study, 58,563 genes were assembled, and 7946 differentially expressed genes were discovered, including 4068 upregulated genes and 3878 downregulated genes. The outcomes of the histological examination demonstrated that benzoic acid stress augmented the upregulation of genes encoding key enzymes implicated in the citric acid cycle, fatty acid metabolism, as well as starch and sucrose metabolic pathways. Cold temperature storage (lower than 10 °C) has been used as a management strategy to extend marketability and reduce potato storage losses. However, cold temperatures may result in dark-colored chips through a process known as cold-induced sweetening (CIS). 'Dakota Crisp' and 'Dakota Diamond' are two North Dakota State University potato breeding program cultivar releases selected for cold-chipping ability with high tuber yield potential. Two-year storage trials were conducted to examine sugar development and tuber processing quality of four cultivars grown at three nitrogen rates under irrigated and non-irrigated field conditions. The two-way interaction between storage period and storage temperature was significant for sucrose content, glucose content, visual chip color, and Agtron values, indicating a difference in sugar development for each storage temperature profile. Among the four cultivars evaluated under both irrigated and non-irrigated production conditions, 'Dakota Pearl' accumulated significantly less sucrose and glucose compared to other cultivars under the same storage conditions. 'Dakota Crisp' produced acceptable chip color from 8.9 °C after long term storage, while 'Dakota Diamond' produced acceptable chip color from 8.9 °C for up to 6 months of storage. These results emphasize the importance of developing cultivar-specific management profiles including storage and the informational need for producers and processors in determining the best practices for individual cultivars. The natural sweetness, unique flavour, and potential health benefits of honey make it a desirable ingredient for ice cream that can increase its appeal for consumers. The aim of this study was to investigate the polyphenolic content and sensory properties of ice cream made using a variety of New Zealand honey (clover, bush, pōhutukawa, rewarewa, kamahi, and thyme honey). The major polyphenols in honey ice cream were quinic acid, pinocembrin, hydroxybenzoic acid, pinobanksin and chrysin. Thyme and clover honey ice cream had the highest concentration of polyphenols. This study aimed to determine the exopolysaccharide (EPS) production of Lactiplantibacillus pentosus KS27 depending on temperature, incubation time, and medium composition and to determine the optimum conditions. Characterization was carried out for the exopolysaccharide produced under optimum conditions. In the study, three different conditions (25 °C, 35 °C, 45 °C) were used for temperature, glycerol, and sucrose as media, and three different periods (24 h, 36 h, and 48 h) were used. It was determined that the solubility of EPS produced under optimal conditions had the highest water content (98 ± 0.01%), while the water binding capacity was also found to be as high as 1970 ± 0.01% and complied with common EPS characteristics. Differential scanning calorimeter analysis showed a gradual deterioration up to 191.88 °C and a slow decline up to 400 °C. FTIR analysis deciphered peak values between 3289 and 517 cm−1, and functional groups were detected. When the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrum was examined, a heterogeneous structure appropriate to the structure of EPS was found by defining the peak entities in three separate regions. The optimum germination conditions for foxtail millet sprouts enriched with γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and antioxidant polyphenols were investigated. From single-factor experimental results, both the GABA level and total phenolic content (TPC) were more significantly affected by soaking temperature and time, and concentration of sucrose culture solution. Response surface methodology (RSE) was used to optimize the germination conditions of foxtail millet sprouts, where the interaction between soaking temperature and sucrose concentration exhibited a significant (p < 0.05) effect on TPC, and the interaction between soaking time and sucrose concentration displayed a significant (p < 0.05) effect on GABA content. The optimal germination conditions for TPC and GABA enrichment of foxtail millet sprouts were soaking at 31 °C for 4.5 h and germinating at 35 °C with 4.5 g/L sucrose solution for 5 days. Under the optimized conditions, the TPC and GABA content of foxtail millet sprouts were 926.53 milligrams of ferulic acid equivalents per 100 g dry weight (mg FAE/100 g DW) and 259.13 mg/kg, separately, with less difference from the predicted values of 929.44 mg FAE/100 g DW and 263.60 mg/kg, respectively. Collectively, all the individual phenolic compounds increased significantly (p < 0.05) by optimization, except for cis-p-coumaric acid and cis-ferulic acid in bound. The primary purpose of this study is to synthesize biochar (Fe-SB) derived from sucrose through hydrothermal carbonization coupling with goethite activation and utilize it as an adsorbent to remove methylene blue (MB). FTIR, SEM, and BET were used to analyze the biochar characterization. Factors affecting the adsorption of MB on Fe-SB, including temperature, pH, salt, and different water sources, were also meticulously investigated. SEM results indicate that the morphology of the biochar derived from sucrose has a spherical shape, and the goethite crystal has a needle-like structure that successfully deposits on the adsorbent. The specific surface area of Fe-SB is 568 m2/g and contains enormous functional groups of O–H, C = C, and C–O. In the condition of pH 8, Fe-SB had a maximum adsorption capability of 476.2 mg/g. The adsorption capacity of biochar for MB removal consists of various adsorption mechanisms. Chronic liver disease is closely linked to dietary intake factors, such as high consumption of simple carbohydrates including sucrose. In this study, the influence of sucrose on the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common primary liver malignancy, was explored. Using the hepatocarcinogen diethylnitrosamine (DEN) to induce HCC in the rat, we co-administered sucrose with DEN. The co-administration significantly modified body, liver and pancreas weight, as well as, serum fatty acids and triglycerides. DEN caused liver structural alteration, fibrosis, and tumor formation; surprisingly, co-administration with sucrose restored hepatic lipids, improved liver architecture, and reduced fibrosis and tumor development. Sucrose intake negatively regulated tumor markers and cell proliferation, and reduced the expression of genes associated with lipid metabolism and oxidative stress response. These findings highlight a hepatoprotective effect of sucrose during DEN-induced hepatocarcinogenesis, underlining an intriguing role of high sucrose consumption during HCC development and providing new insights as well as possible pathways of cellular protection under sucrose intake on hepatocarcinogenesis. AbstractInvestigating the biotechnological potential of wild microorganisms is paramount for optimizing bioprocesses. Given this premise, we looked for yeasts in Brazilian native stingless bees, considering the recognized potential of pollinating insect-associated microorganisms for the production of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Two yeast strains of the species Meyerozyma caribbica were isolated from bees Scaptotrigona postica and evaluated for their fermentative capacity. Both yeasts were capable of fermenting sucrose (the main sugar used in the Brazilian ethanol industry) with over 90% efficiency and yields of up to 0.504 g/g. Through an experimental design analysis (CCD), it was verified that the ethanol productivity of these yeasts can also benefit from high concentrations of sucrose and low pH values, desirable traits for microorganisms in this biofuel production. At the same time, CCD analyses also showed the great capacity of these M. caribbica strains to produce another alcohol of broad biotechnological interest, 2-phenylethanol. Interestingly, the statistical analyses demonstrated that greater production of this compound can occur at high sugar concentrations and low availability of nitrogen sources, which can be easily achieved using residual low-cost feedstocks. The poor anode/electrolyte interface triggered by abysmal dendritic growth and hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) hinders the development of aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (AZIBs). Here, a highly efficient electrolyte is formulated with sucralose (Sucral) additive to refresh solvated structure and steer interfacial renovation, for building highly electronegative Cl‐modulated trinity effect in the bulk‐interface between electrolyte and electrode. Experiment results and theoretical studies jointly reveal that Sucral with highly zincophilic and hydrophilic hydroxyl groups can remodel primary Zn2+ solvation shell and interrupt strong H‐bond network from H2O molecules, thus boosting fast de‐solvation and restricting undesirable HER. Simultaneously, three highly electronegative chlorides in the adsorbed Sucral possessing hydrophobic features can enable a H2O‐poor electric double‐layer (EDL), thus remodeling the Zn surface against corrosion. Additionally, it realizes preferential exposure of the Zn (002) plane for helping uniform interfacial deposition. The synergy of the above factors achieves a prolonged lifespan of 3000 h (1.0 mA cm−2, 1.0 mAh cm−2), much better than that with Sucrose (Suc) electrolyte. Ingested toxins formulated as baits can be effective in the management of insect pests, but their efficacy may be influenced by insect foraging alongside active ingredients. There are several components that might influence insect consumption of toxic baits, one of which being prior nutritional exposure. In our study, we investigated how protein deprivation following adult emergence influences lethal and sublethal effects of boric acid on the pest tephritid melon fly, Zeugodacus cucurbitae. We performed a series of experiments to address the impact of prior diet on mortality, diet consumption, enzymes involved in detoxification and antioxidation and fly activity. Newly emerged melon fly adults were provided either diet containing 3:1 sucrose/yeast hyrdrolysate or just sucrose for three days prior to bioassays. Overall, protein deprivation had a strong effect on fly interactions with boric acid. In two separate experiments (continuous exposure and short duration feeding), insects only pre‐fed sucrose had significantly higher mortality compared with those pre‐fed protein. Insects that were pre‐fed only sucrose removed more liquid diet over the same duration of the experiments, suggesting compensatory foraging behaviours. Adults pre‐fed sucrose had higher catalase (1.5×) and superoxide dismutase (1.7×) activities compared with adults pre‐fed sucrose‐yeast, but we found no effect of boric acid on their activity or that of glutathione‐S‐transferase or acetylcholinesterase activity. Boric acid consumption also significantly reduced the activity of melon flies. Summary: The length of hypocotyl affects the height of soybean and lodging resistance, thus determining the final grain yield. However, research on soybean hypocotyl length is scarce, and the regulatory mechanisms are not fully understood. Here, we identified a module controlling the transport of sucrose, where sucrose acts as a messenger moved from cotyledon to hypocotyl, regulating hypocotyl elongation. This module comprises four key genes, namely MYB33, SWEET11, SWEET21 and GA2ox8c in soybean. In cotyledon, MYB33 is responsive to sucrose and promotes the expression of SWEET11 and SWEET21, thereby facilitating sucrose transport from the cotyledon to the hypocotyl. Subsequently, sucrose transported from the cotyledon up‐regulates the expression of GA2ox8c in the hypocotyl, which ultimately affects the length of the hypocotyl. During the domestication and improvement of soybean, an allele of MYB33 with enhanced abilities to promote SWEET11 and SWEET21 has gradually become enriched in landraces and cultivated varieties, SWEET11 and SWEET21 exhibit high conservation and have undergone a strong purified selection and GA2ox8c is under a strong artificial selection. Drying experiments with varying air temperature and humidity were conducted to investigate the influence of the drying process on the crystallization of thin sucrose films. For the first time, the effects of the nucleation onset, nucleation rate, and growth rate were investigated in situ and their differentiated influence on product crystallinity could be assessed. The growth rate was not influenced by air humidity but showed a strong dependence on temperature. It increased with drying temperature; however, at high temperatures, growth was inhibited when the water content falls below a critical level. Noticeable differences in nucleation behavior could be observed with regard to air humidity. Dry air led to crystallization onsets at lower levels of supersaturation, while moderately humid air retarded it. At higher temperatures, nucleation onset commenced at lower water contents but at a constant supersaturation level. The nucleation rate doubled in experiments with moderately humid air (15% RH), while an elevated drying temperature showed generally lower nucleation rates. The observed differences in the nucleation onset and rate could be explained by the film-internal concentration profile, which is strongly influenced by drying parameters. Increased allocation of behaviour to substance abuse at the expense of personal and social rewards is a hallmark of addiction that is reflected in several of DSM‐5 criteria for diagnosis of substance use disorder. Previous studies focused on refining the self‐administration (SA) model to better emulate an addictive state in laboratory animals. Here, we employed concurrent SA of sucrose pellets and morphine as two competing natural and drug rewards, respectively, to validate the feasibility of capturing pathological behavioural allocation in rats. A custom‐made three‐lever operant chamber was used. With one active and one inactive lever presented, rats were trained to self‐administer morphine (0.5 mg/kg/infusion; 2 h/day) under a fixed‐ratio 1 (FR‐1) schedule until a stable response was achieved. Next, they were trained to self‐administer morphine in the presence of a third lever dispensing sucrose pellets (20 mg) under FR‐1. Concurrent morphine‐sucrose SA sessions (2 h/day) were continued until stable morphine taking behaviour was re‐established. In another experiment, rats first established stable sucrose pellet SA (2 h/day, FR‐1) and then were trained to take morphine (0.5 mg/kg/infusion; 2 h/day). Subsequently, all rats underwent extinction training, in which morphine was replaced with saline while sucrose pellets were still available upon lever pressing, followed by cue‐induced reinstatement of morphine seeking behaviour. Results showed that rats retained morphine SA when sucrose pellets were also available, but they showed binge‐like sucrose intake when morphine was removed during the extinction sessions. However, morphine SA did not develop in rats that had previously established sucrose pellet SA. In conclusion, morphine SA developed even in the presence of a potent competing nondrug reward in rats. The dorsal region of the hippocampus (dHC) mediates many of the mnemonic functions traditionally associated with the hippocampus proper, such as spatial and episodic memory, whereas ventral hippocampus (vHC) has been extensively implicated in emotional memory and motivational processes. By contrast, the functions of the intermediate hippocampus (iHC) are far less understood. In this study, we aimed to investigate the mnemonic functions of iHC by reversibly inactivating iHC prior to testing memory in behavioral tasks dependent on the integrity of dHC, iHC, or vHC, namely, rapid place water maze, inhibitory avoidance, spontaneous alternation, and temporal ordering of odors. Given our previous findings showing that dHC and vHC are involved in mnemonic control of ingestive behavior, we also assessed the effects of iHC inactivation on sucrose intake. The results showed that pharmacological inhibition of iHC impairs rapid place water maze memory, which has been previously shown to be dependent on iHC but not dHC or vHC. iHC inactivation does not impact memory dependent on dHC (spontaneous alternation), vHC (temporal odor memory), or either dHC or vHC (inhibitory avoidance), and only modestly affects sucrose intake. These findings provide support for the involvement of iHC in mnemonic functions that are distinct from dHC and vHC and highlight the need to further advance our understanding of the functions of this hippocampal region that has been relatively understudied. Sucrose constitutes a non-toxic, biodegradable, low-cost and readily available natural product. To expand its utility, we developed total synthesis for a ligand based on a sucrose scaffold for potential use as a metal chelation agent. The designed target (compound 2) has a metal-chelating functionality at both the C-6 and C-6' positions, which can provide a first coordination sphere of eight valencies. The designed total synthesis was highly efficient. To demonstrate the utility of the ligand, we studied its complexation with Gd(III). Using potentiometric titration and high-resolution mass spectrometry, we confirmed the formation of a 1:1 complex with Gd(III), which has a respectable formation constant of ~1013.4. Further NMR relaxivity studies show that the Gd(III) complex has a relaxivity (r1) of 7.6958 mmol−1 s−1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To reveal the effect of sucrose concentration on the production of secondary metabolites, a metabolome and transcriptome joint analysis was carried out using callus induced from grape variety Mio Red cambial meristematic cells. We identified 559 metabolites—mainly flavonoids, phenolic acids, and stilbenoids—as differential content metabolites (fold change ≥2 or ≤0.5) in at least one pairwise comparison of treatments with 7.5, 15, or 30 g/L sucrose in the growing media for 15 or 30 days (d). Resveratrol, viniferin, and amurensin contents were highest at 15 d of subculture; piceid, ampelopsin, and pterostilbene had higher contents at 30 d. A transcriptome analysis identified 1310 and 498 (at 15 d) and 1696 and 2211 (at 30 d) differentially expressed genes (DEGs; log2(fold change) ≥ 1, p < 0.05) in 7.5 vs. 15 g/L and 15 vs. 30 g/L sucrose treatments, respectively. In phenylpropane and isoflavone pathways, DEGs encoding cinnamic acid 4-hydroxylase, chalcone synthase, chalcone isomerase, and flavanone 3-hydroxylase were more highly expressed at 15 d than at 30 d, while other DEGs showed different regulation patterns corresponding to sucrose concentrations and cultivation times. For all three sucrose concentrations, the stilbene synthase (STS) gene exhibited significantly higher expression at 15 vs. 30 d, while two resveratrol O-methyltransferase (ROMT) genes related to pterostilbene synthesis showed significantly higher expression at 30 vs. 15 d. In addition, a total of 481 DEGs were annotated as transcription factors in pairwise comparisons; an integrative analysis suggested MYB59, WRKY20, and MADS8 as potential regulators responding to sucrose levels in flavonoid and stilbene biosynthesis in grape callus. The objective of this study was to create and characterize an innovative granola, a popular choice in quick breakfasts. The granola samples were sweetened with agave syrup (A), honey (H), and stevia (S) and produced using conventional oven (1) and microwave (2) baking techniques at temperatures of 160°C and 300 W, respectively. Among the samples, H1 exhibited the highest total sugar content (26.64 ng/µL), with fructose being the predominant monosaccharide in A and H samples, whereas saccharose and maltose were more prominent in S‐containing samples. Hydroxymethylfurfural was absent in S2, but its concentrations ranged between 10.52 and 85.78 ppm in the other samples. Linoleic acid constituted nearly 52% of the fatty acid composition in all granolas. In terms of organic acid composition, malic acid ranged between 1189.55 and 2022.95 µg/mL, and citric acid fell within the range of 341.58 and 1824.04 µg/mL. The granola specimens also contained individual phenolic compounds, such as vanillic acid, vanillin, ferulic acid, propyl gallate, and pyrocatechol. Practical Application: This study demonstrates that both baking method and sweetener choice significantly impact the chemical quality attributes of granola, which is a popular breakfast cereal. Microwave baking can be a faster and potentially healthier option, whereas stevia offers a low‐calorie sweetener alternative. Summary The sweetness of apple fruit is a key factor in the improvement of apple varieties, with fructose being the sweetest of the soluble sugars, playing a crucial role in determining the overall sweetness of the apple. Therefore, uncovering the key genes controlling fructose accumulation and deciphering the regulatory mechanisms of fructose are vitally important for the improvement of apple varieties. In this study, through BSA‐seq and transcriptome analysis of the ‘Changfu 2’ × ‘Golden Delicious’ F1 hybrid population, MdNAC5 was identified as a key regulatory gene for fructose content. MdNAC5 was shown to significantly influence fructose accumulation in both apples and tomatoes. Furthermore, we conducted a detailed identification of sugar transporters and metabolic enzymes in apples, discovering that MdNAC5 can enhance fructose accumulation in vacuoles and the conversion of sucrose to fructose by binding to and activating the promoters of the vacuolar sugar transporter MdTST2 and the neutral invertase MdNINV6. Additionally, MdNAC5 regulated the MdEIN3.4‐MdSWEET15a module, strengthening the unloading of sucrose in the phloem of the fruit. Our results reveal a new mechanism by which MdNAC5 regulates fructose accumulation in apples and provide theoretical foundations for improving apple sweetness through genetic modification. Bacteria of the genus Azotobacter sp. produce two classes of biologically important biocompatible and biodegradable polymers, polyoxyalkanoates, which are the bacterial reserve, and alginates (ALG), which perform the function of protecting nitrogenase from oxygen. Both polymers are becoming increasingly important for use in bioengineering, pharmaceuticals, and medicine, so studies of their biosynthesis and properties are currently highly relevant. The present work shows the possibility of regulating alginate and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) synthesis by a culture of A. vinelandii 12 depending on the increase in the sucrose concentration in the medium under different aeration conditions. At high aeration and high sucrose concentrations in the medium (50 g/L), the maximum yield of free (1.08 g/L) and capsular ALG (2.26 g/L) in the medium was obtained. Under low aeration conditions, the synthesis of free ALG was completely inhibited. The maximum value of РНB synthesis was observed at medium aeration and a high concentration of sucrose (50 g/L) in the medium. The maximum molecular weight (MW) of ALG was 477 kDa, while the maximum MW of PHB was much higher, reaching 1479 kDa. At low sucrose concentrations in the medium (5 to 20 g/L), capsular ALG is predominantly synthesized (up to 100% of the sum of all polymers) at all aeration levels. With increasing sucrose concentration, PHB is predominantly synthesized (68%) under low aeration conditions, an equal ratio of PHB and capsular ALG synthesis is observed under medium aeration conditions, and free ALG is actively synthesized under high aeration conditions. This work demonstrates the possibility of obtaining a selective synthesis of ALG or PHB by A. vinelandii 12 by modifying its cultivation conditions. Hydrogen bonding is a crucial feature of biomolecules, but its characterization in glycans dissolved in aqueous solutions is challenging due to rapid hydrogen exchange between hydroxyl groups and H2O. In principle, the scalar (J) coupling constant can reveal the relative orientation of the atoms in the molecule. In contrast to J‐coupling through H‐bonds reported in proteins and nucleic acids, research on J‐coupling through H‐bonds in glycans dissolved in water is lacking. Here, we use sucrose as a model system for H‐bonding studies; its structure, which consists of glucose (Glc) and fructose (Frc), is well‐studied, and it is readily available. We apply the in‐phase, antiphase‐HSQC‐TOCSY and quantify previously unreported through H‐bond J‐values for Frc–OH1–Glc–OH2 in H2O. While earlier reports of Brown and Levy indicate this H‐bond as having only a single direction, our reported findings indicate the potential presence of two involving these same atoms, namely, G2OH ➔ F1O and F1OH ➔ G2O (where F and G stand for Frc and Glc, respectively). The calculated density functional theory J‐values for the G2OH ➔ F1O agree with the experimental values. Additionally, we detected four other possible H‐bonds in sucrose, which require different phi, psi (ϕ, ψ) torsion angles. The ϕ, ψ values are consistent with previous predictions of du Penhoat et al. and Venable et al. The synthesis of hollow AlN microsphere was studied because of its potential applications in various areas associated with high surface area and lightweight. A combined technique of hydrothermal and carbothermal reduction–nitridation (CRN) was adopted to synthesize spherical precursor and to transform to AlN, respectively, using Al-nitrate, sucrose, and urea. The precursor having different morphology were obtained after hydrothermal treatments at 180 °C for 12 h, depending on starting material combinations, where urea/Al molar ratio = 1 resulted in amorphous hollow microsphere. By CRN at 1500 °C for 4 h in a flowing N 2 atmosphere, approximately 5 μm-sized hollow microsphere composed of AlN, α -Al 2 O 3 , or γ -AlON could be synthesized. CRN at higher temperature (1600 °C for 4 h) or for longer holding time (1500 °C for 10 h) is required to obtain pure AlN microsphere. Further tests at nine different hydrothermal conditions were performed to find an optimal synthesis condition, while the possible formation mechanism for hollow AlN microspheres was also proposed based on observations.
