Thermal properties are important factors to determine the proper manufacturing, processing, and storing of biocomposites. Therefore, the thermal properties of the biocomposite made from acetylated betung bamboo pulp and polypropylene (PP) were investigated. The biocomposite was manufactured by hot pressing at 180 oC for 2 minutes and the fiber contents of the acetylated bamboo pulp used were 10 and 20% according to PP weight. The influence of acetylation and fiber content of bamboo pulp on the thermal properties of the biocomposite were investigated by using differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The results showed that acetylated bamboo pulp-PP biocomposite’s were higher than its pure and untreated biocomposites. The rate of crystallization growth of the acetylated bamboo pulp-PP biocomposites was faster up to 4.5 fold than pure PP composite. In addition, its acetylated bamboo pulp-PP had higher onset and maximum decomposition temperature than its untreated fiber-PP biocomposites but lower than PP. According to the results, the best thermal properties of biocomposite were obtained by acetylation of bamboo pulp with 10% fiber content.

Particleboard is a product of wood technology engineering made of wood particles and other lignocellulosic materials which are bonded with synthetic adhesives. As an information, utilization of natural adhesive for particleboard is still limited. This study aimed to determine the influence of hybrid adhesive made from citric acid and sucrose for particleboard properties composed of Sengon veener by-products and sorghum stalk. The hybrid adhesive content used was 15% of citric acid and 25% of sucrose that calculated from the dry weight of particles. The mixture ratio of hybrid adhesive for both citric acid and sucrose were 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100 (% w/w). The manufacture of particleboard was set on target density of 0.8 g/cm3 under a press temperature of 200o C for 10 minutes. Mostly, the properties of particleboard were shown to be affected by the adhesive content and composition ratio between citric acid and sucrose and met the Japan Industrial Standard A 5908:2003. The value of modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture, internal bond, and screw holding were ranged about 1.21-3.49 GPa, 12.77-20.24 MPa, 0.18-0.90 MPa and 167.71-321.27 N. Particleboard with 15% of citric acid content and the mixture ratio both citric acid and sucrose of 50:50 has the best physical and mechanical properties and met the requirement of Japan Industrial Standard A 5908:2003.

Citric acid was utilized as a bonding agent in the production of Sembilang bamboo particleboard. The limitation in using bamboo for particleboard production is that the silica content in bamboo skin can accelerate particleboard processing machines' bluntness and reduce particle adherence in particleboard manufacturing. This research aimed to investigate the influence of bamboo skin and citric acid content on the characteristics of Sembilang bamboo particleboard. Particleboards were prepared using bamboo particles (type A) and unskinned bamboo particles (type B). The citric acid solution (59%) was sprayed over the surface of bamboo particles to obtain three different levels of citric acid, i.e., 15, 20, and 25 % (based on bamboo particles’ dry weight). The Sembilang bamboo particleboards were manufactured using a hot-pressing machine at 200°C, 5 MPa for 10 min. The particleboard targeted density was 0.8 g/cm3. The type B particleboards’ internal bond (IB), modulus of rupture (MOR), water absorption (WA), and thickness swelling (TS) were superior compared to the type A particleboards. This was influenced by the lower concentration of silica in type B particleboards, which tend to allow an intimate contact area among particles and citric acid then produced better quality particleboards compared to type A particleboards. The type B particleboards met the obligation of JIS A 5908 for type 18 particleboard in terms of modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, and internal bond, however, only fulfilled the type 8 particleboard in terms of screw holding power. The physical properties of Sembilang bamboo particleboard were also improved when using type B bamboo particles and adhered with citric acid at a level of 25%.

Particleboard is a panel product made of wood particles or other lignocellulosic materials added with adhesive then pressed. The development of particleboard manufactured using non wood biomass has become important due to the decreased of wood as main raw material for the particleboard industry. Corn husk (Zea mays L.) and Sembilang bamboo (Dendrocalamus giganteus Munro) are lignocellulosic biomass that has potential as renewable materials for hybrid particleboard. The purposes of this study were to determine the suitability, the effect of adhesive type, and particle composition on physical and mechanical properties of hybrid particleboard made of corn husk and Sembilang bamboo particles. The adhesive types used were urea formaldehyde (UF) and phenol formaldehyde (PF) with 10 wt% adhesive content and the composition of corn husk : Sembilang bamboo was set at 100 : 0, 75 : 25, 50 : 50, 25 : 75, 0 : 100 (% w/w). The target density of hybrid particleboard was set at 0.80 g/cm3. The boards were manufactured at 130 °C for UF and 150 °C for PF press temperature, 10 minutes and 2.5 MPa for the pressure of the hot press. The results showed that hybrid particleboard properties improved with increasing the amount of Sembilang bamboo particles in the board. Hybrid particleboard properties affected in ascending order were modulus of rupture (MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE), internal bond (IB) and screw holding power (SHP). Generally, hybrid particleboard bonded PF adhesive has better properties than bonded UF adhesive. Results indicated that the addition of Sembilang bamboo particles in the mixture resulted in better properties of hybrid particleboard.

Lignocellulosic biomass is a biological residue from the agricultural or forestry industry which is composed of polymeric cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and other extractive components. One of the products in the utilization of lignocellulosic biomass waste is activated carbon products. In this study, two types of lignocellulosic biomass waste were used, namely Empty Palm Oil Bunches (OPEFB) and Mahogany Sawdust (MS) to be converted into activated carbon using the hydrothermal-pyrolysis method. Potassium hydroxide (KOH) was used as an activating agent at high concentrations (50% w/w) to improve the adsorption mechanism in activated carbon material. Proximate analysis was carried out to obtain information related to yield, moisture content, and ash content. In addition, activated carbon samples were characterized using FTIR, XRD, and FESEM to observe the chemical bonds, structure, and morphology of activated carbon, respectively. The proximate analysis showed that the activated carbon sample had met the SNI 63-3730-1995 standard for technical activated carbon on the parameters of water content and ash content, while the FTIR spectrum showed the mechanism of biomass conversion from raw materials to activated carbon on a chemical bond approach. Furthermore, the XRD graph shows a reduction in the crystal size of the material from raw material to activated carbon material. Finally, the FESEM image shows a significant increase in the quality and quantity of pores on the carbon material before and after activation.

The common food container product was made from plastic such as polypropylene, polystyrene, etc which has slowed to degrade hence affected to the environmental pollution and health disorder. Therefore, environmentally friendly food container composite is developed from sustainable resources such as sorghum bagasse and citric acid. The effects of sorghum species, sorghum particles and citric acid content on the composite properties were investigated. Local species of sorghum was used as raw material such as Super 2 in the manufacturing of food packaging. The size and moisture content of the particles were passthrough on 40 mesh and 10%, respectively. The content of the particle was variated such as 10, 15, and 20% wt. Furthermore, citric acid was used as a binder with difference content such as 10, 20, and 30% wt. Those raw materials were mixed with tapioca starch, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and glutaraldehyde. The mixing material was hot pressed at 180 ℃ for 15 minutes. The composite dimension was 12 cm x 10 cm x 3 mm. The physical and mechanical properties of the composite were carried out. Considering the properties of the composite, sorghum bagasse and citric acid are suitable as raw material of food container composite.

Limbah sengon dapat digunakan sebagai bahan alternatif dalam pembuatan papan partikel. Namun demikian, papan patikel dari sengon memiliki beberapa kekurangan yaitu memiliki sifat fisis dan mekanis yang belum memenuhi standar Jepang (JIS A 5908:2003). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan sifat fisis dan mekanis papan partikel sengon dengan penambahan bagas sorgum pada berbagai komposisi bahan baku menggunakan perekat asam sitrat. Perekat yang digunakan adalah asam sitrat dengan kadar perekat 20% terhadap berat kering partikel. Komposisi campuran sengon dan bagas sorgum adalah 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, dan 25:75 (% g/g). Target kerapatan papan partikel yang diproduksi adalah 0,8 g/cm3. Papan partikel dikempa panas pada suhu 200°C selama 10 menit. Pengujian sifat fisis dan mekanis papan partikel dilakukan dengan mengacu pada standar JIS A 5908:2003. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kerapatan, kadar air, pengembangan tebal, keteguhan lentur, keteguhan patah dan keteguhan rekat telah memenuhi persyaratan standar JIS A 5908-2003. Penambahan bagas sorgum bisa dijadikan sebagai salah satu alternatif untuk meningkatkan sifat fisis dan mekanis papan partikel sengon. Penambahan 75% bagas sorgum mampu meningkatkan kadar air, daya serap air, pengembangan tebal, keteguhan lentur, dan keteguhan patah terbaik pada papan partikel.

This study aims to produce mortar through the addition of oil palm shells (OPS)-activated charcoal and oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) hydrochar, which has high mechanical properties, self-healing crack capabilities, and pollutant adsorption abilities. The cracking of mortar and other cementitious materials is essential in anticipating and reducing building damages and ages due to various reasons, such as chemical reactions, foundation movements, climatic changes, and environmental stresses. This leads to the creation of self-healing mortar, which is produced by adding reductive crack size materials to form calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and silicate hydrate (3CaO.2SiO2.2H2O, CSH). One of these materials is known as activated charcoal, which is obtained from oil palm shells (OPS) and oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB) fibres. This is because the OPS-activated charcoal minimizes crack sizes and functions as a gaseous pollutant absorber. In this study, activated charcoal was used as fine aggregate to substitute a part of the utilized sand. This indicated that the utilized content varied between 1–3 wt.% cement. Also, the mortar samples were tested after 28 days of cure, including the mechanical properties and gaseous pollutant adsorption abilities. Based on this study, the crack recovery test was also performed at specific forces and wet/dry cycles, respectively, indicating that the mortar with the addition of 3% activated charcoal showed the best characteristics. Using 3% of the cement weight, OPEFB hydrochar subsequently varied at 1, 2, and 3% of the mortar volume, respectively. Therefore, the mortar with 3 and 1% of OPS-activated charcoal and OPEFB hydrochar had the best properties, based on mechanical, self-healing, and pollutant adsorption abilities.

Tanaman jabon (Anthocephallus cadamba Miq.) sudah banyak ditanam oleh masyarakat sebagai bahan alternatif untuk keperluan bangunan dan mebel. Kayu jabon memiliki dua kelemahan, yaitu tidak kuat (termasuk kelas kuat IV) dan tidak awet (kelas awet V). Untuk meningkatkan sifat kekuatan kayu jabon dalam penelitian ini dilakukan pembuatan papan komposit kayu jabon laminasi bambu atau papan jabon laminasi bambu (PJLB). Bambu yang digunakan adalah bambu mayan (Gigantochloa robusta Kurz) dan bambu andong (Gigantochloa pseudoarundinaceae (Steudel) Widjaja). Kayu jabon dan bilah bambu andong dan bambu mayan yang digunakan untuk membuat PJLB direndam dalam larutan boron 7% hingga mencapai target retensi 6 kg/m3. PJLB dibuat dengan empat macam komposisi lapisan, menggunakan perekat isosianat dengan berat labur 250 g/m2 permukaan, dikempa dingin dengan lama pengempaan satu jam. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui peningkatan kualitas kayu jabon akibat rekayasa PJLB dan pengaruh jumlah lapisan bambu tersebut terhadap sifat PJLB. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kualitas PJLB secara nyata dipengaruhi oleh jumlah lapisan bambu, kecuali keteguhan rekatnya. Pelapisan bambu pada kayu jabon (PJLB) telah meningkatkan nilai kerapatan sebesar 10%, modulus elastisitas (MOE) 71%, modulus patah (MOR) 34% dan keteguhan tekan 20% dibanding kayu jabon tanpa laminasi. PJLB memiliki sifat mekanis atau kekuatan setara dengan kayu kelas kuat III.

The fibroin extraction process was done base on temperature and time parameters without knowing exactly the rendement been maximum or not. Optimum rendement data are critical to the business feasibility for scaling up to the industrial level. The objective of this research is to obtain the optimum extraction process (degumming) to get the highest fibroin rendement. The method in this research was response surface method (RSM) where NaOH concentration, process temperature and time consumption were chosen to be independent variables. These variables were formulated in the central composite design (CCD) research method at RSM Program with the center point is NaOH 0.1 N, 105 °C for 30 minutes. The weight of fibroin yield (%) being use as a response condition (dependent variable) to get the optimum result of fibroin rendement. The optimum degumming process condition of Bombyx mori are achieved where the NaOH 0.018 N, 110.53 °C temperature degree for 55.51 minutes for a batch time process with the rendement recorded was 71.11 ± 0.98 %. As for “Attacus atlas” the optimum rendement was 83.06 ± 1.50 % achieved at 0.12 N NaOH concentration, process temperature was 79 oC and 42.65 minutes for twice degumming. The best selected fribroin degumming method will lead to the optimum yield achievement. ABSTRAK Ekstraksi fibroin dilakukan dengan perlakuan suhu dan waktu tanpa diketahui maksimal atau tidaknya capaian rendemen yang dihasilkan. Padahal data tersebut sangat penting untuk estimasi profitabilitas pada usaha hilir ulat sutera. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendapatkan formulasi ekstraksi (degumming) yang menghasilkan rendemen fibroin optimum. Metode yang digunakan adalah optimasi ekstraksi fibroin menggunakan Program Response Surface Methodology (RSM) dengan tiga variabel bebas, konsentrasi NaOH, suhu dan waktu. Variabel tersebut diformulasikan dalam rancangan percobaan Central Composite Design (CCD) di Program RSM menggunakan titik pusat NaOH 0,1 N, suhu 105 °C selama 30 menit. Pada rancangan percobaan tersebut, rendemen bobot fibroin (%) digunakan sebagai respon (variabel terikat) untuk menghasilkan kondisi optimum. Kondisi tersebut berupa formulasi variabel bebas yang mengoptimumkan rendemen fibroin. Kondisi optimum Bombyx mori dicapai pada konsentrasi NaOH 0,018 N, suhu 110,53 °C dan waktu 55,51 menit pada satu kali degumming dengan perolehan rendemen fibroin sebesar 71,11 ± 0,98 %. Rendemen fibroin optimum sebesar 83,06 ± 1,50 % pada Attacus atlas dihasilkan dari kondisi optimum NaOH 0,12 N, suhu 79 °C selama 42,65 menit pada dua kali degumming. Metode ekstraksi fibroin yang tepat akan menghasilkan rendemen fibroin yang optimum.

Sisal (Agave sisalana) as a perennial tropical plant grows abundantly in Indonesia. Its fibers can be used as the reinforcement agent of biocomposite products. Utilization of sisal as natural fiber has some notable benefits compared to synthetic fibers, such as renewable, light in weight, and low in cost. Manufacture of biocomposite requires the use of matrix such as thermoplastic polymer, e.g. polypropylene (PP) and polylactic acid (PLA) to bond together with the reinforcement agent (e.g. sisal fibers). In relevant, experiment was conducted on biocomposites manufacture that comprised sisal fibers and PP as well as PLA. Sisal fibers were converted into pulp, then refined to micro-size fibrillated fibers such that their diameter reduced to about 10 μm, and dried in an oven. The dry microfibrillated sisal pulp fibers cellulose (MSFC) were thoroughly mixed with either PP or PLA with varying ratios of MSFC/PP as well as MSFC/PLA, and then shaped into the mat (i.e. MSFC-PP and MSFC-PLA biocomposites). Two kinds of shaping was employed, i.e. hot-press molding and injection molding. In the hot-press molding, the ratio of MSFC/PP as well as MSFC/PLA ranged about 30/70-50/50. Meanwhile in the injection (employed only on assembling the MSFC-PLA biocomposite), the ratio of MSFC/PLA varied about 10/90-30/70. The resulting shaped MSFC-PP and MSFC-PLA biocomposites were then tested of its physical and mechanical properties. With the hot-press molding device, the physical and mechanical (strength) properties of MSFC-PLA biocomposite were higher than those of MSFC-PP biocomposite. The optimum ratio of MSFC/PP as well as MSFC/PLA reached concurrently at 40/60. The strengths of MSFC-PP as well as MSFC-PLA biocomposites were greater than those of individual polymer (PP and PLA). With the injection molding device, only the MSFC-PLA biocomposite was formed and its strengths reached maximum at 30/70 ratio. The particular strengths (MOR and MOE) of MSFC-PLA biocomposite shaped with injection molding were lower than those with hot-press molding, both at 30/70 ratio. The overall MOR of such MSFC- PLA biocomposite was lower than that of pure PLA, while its MOE was still mostly higher.

A promising water treatment method involves using biomass-derived activated carbon (AC) to remove emerging pollutants from wastewater due to its adsorption capacity, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability. Notwithstanding, the existing literature lacks comprehensive studies that specifically focus on removing contaminants in water by comparing the effectiveness of adsorption and photocatalytic degradation methods. Additionally, there is not much emphasis on analyzing the combined processes of adsorption-photocatalytic degradation utilizing AC. Herein, this paper investigates the intricacies of adsorption-photocatalytic degradation mechanisms and contributing variables in the enhancement of performances using biomass-derived AC. Furthermore, this review paper presents a comprehensive examination of different biomass sources employed in the synthesis of AC. It also discusses the diverse techniques utilized for the fabrication of AC, including physical and chemical activation methods. Finally, the shortcomings and future prospects of biomass-derived AC have been addressed. This study offers significant insights for the development of future biomass-derived AC, with the goal of improving their efficiency and expanding their uses in wastewater treatment., Competing Interests: Declarations.
