The 4-fluoro-N-(1,3-dioxoisoindolin-2-yl)benzamide was synthesized by the reaction of 4-fluorobenzohydrazide with phthalic anhydride in acetic acid. The compound was characterized by analytical instruments like FT-IR and NMR. The three-dimensional structure of the title compound was further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction study. In addition to the experimental study, theoretical calculations were performed to explore the molecular structure in order to analyze experimental and theoretical findings. The title compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n as determined by the X-ray diffraction investigation, crystal data for C15H9FN2O3·H2O: a = 14.094(6) Å, b = 7.248(3) Å, c = 14.517(6) Å, β = 105.116(14)°, V = 1431.6(10) Å3, Z = 4, T = 298(2) K, μ(MoKα) = 0.112 mm-1, Dcalc = 1.402 g/cm3, 37521 reflections measured (4.684° ≤ 2Θ ≤ 60.6°), 4225 unique (Rint = 0.0517, Rsigma = 0.0311) that were used in all calculations. The final R1 was 0.0537 (I > 2σ(I)) and wR2 was 0.1501 (all data). The N-H···O and O-H···O hydrogen bonds linking molecules in the crystal form a three-dimensional framework structure. The electronic states and molecular properties of the title compound were determined using computational studies, like density functional theory and Hirshfeld surface analysis.

For thermal-based applications, images are obtained by an Infrared camera through Plank’s law. Thermal sensitivity is the smallest temperature difference detected by the camera. Thermal-images were captured through the heat emitted from plant leaves. Initially, the Gaussian noise in the medical Infrared (IR) images is pre-processed by the median filter. Then the features from the preprocessed images are obtained through the principal component analysis algorithm. From the extracted features, the optimal features are selected using the Scale Invariant Differential Evolution-based Feature (SIDEF) algorithm. Through the exploitation of the selected features, the hybrid genetic algorithm with Relevance Vector Machine (HGRVMA) classifier classifies the features into diseases and non-diseases. To validate the performance of the proposed algorithm, it is compared with the existing algorithms in terms of metrics such as sensitivity, accuracy, precision, and recall. The validation results prove that the proposed HGRVM algorithm is optimal than the existing algorithms for all the metrics.

The knowledge on the effect of graphene oxide (GO) on plants are limited to germination, growth, and toxicity. Since, chloroplast generates sugar by the reduction of CO2 with the optical stimulation through a series of electron transport chain and GO being the 2D material with electron transport property, it is reasonable to check their interaction. Here, the effect of GO without and with amine conjugation (AGO) having opposite charges were allowed to interact with chloroplast. The uptake is documented by using biolayer interferometry coupled with confocal imaging. The ex vivo chloroplast activity with GO and AGO has been tested and found that the GO treatment shows 1.3 times more activity than control. In contrast, AGO function as efficient electron conductor and cause imbalance in the redox beyond the capacity of the antioxidant rich chloroplast solute. Finally, in vivo toxicity has been evaluated in the spinach plants, which highlights the chance of AGO application as herbicide to remove any unwanted plants.

Objective To assess how staff attitudes before, during, and after implementation of a real-time location system (RTLS) that uses radio-frequency identification tags on staff and patient identification badges and on equipment affected staff's intention to use and actual use of an RTLS. Participants and Methods A series of 3 online surveys were sent to staff at an emergency department with plans to implement an RTLS between June 1, 2015, and November 29, 2016. Each survey corresponded with a different phase of implementation: preimplementation, midimplementation, and postimplementation. Multiple logistic regression with backward elimination was used to assess the relationship between demographic variables, attitudes about RTLSs, and intention to use or actual use of an RTLS. Results Demographic variables were not associated with intention to use or actual use of the RTLS. Before implementation, poor perceptions about the technology's usefulness and lack of trust in how employers would use tracking data were associated with weaker intentions to use the RTLS. During and after implementation, attitudes about the technology's use, not issues related to autonomy and privacy, were associated with less use of the technology. Conclusion Real-time location systems have the potential to assess patterns of health care delivery that could be modified to reduce costs and improve the quality of care. Successful implementation, however, may hinge on how staff weighs attitudes and concerns about their autonomy and personal privacy with organizational goals. With the large investments required for new technology, serious consideration should be given to address staff attitudes about privacy and technology in order to assure successful implementation.

Background: The field of infodemiology uses health care trends found in public networks, such as social media, to track and quantify the spread of disease. Type 2 diabetes is on the rise worldwide, and social media may be useful in identifying prediabetes through behavior exhibited through social media platforms such as Facebook and thus in designing and administering early interventions and containing further progression of the disease. Objective: This pilot study is designed to investigate the social media behavior of individuals with prediabetes, before and after diagnosis. Pre- and postdiagnosis Facebook content (posts) of such individuals will be used to create a taxonomy of prediabetes indicators and to identify themes and factors associated with an actual diagnosis of prediabetes. Methods: This is a single-center exploratory retrospective study that examines 20 adults with prediabetes. The investigators will code Facebook posts 3 months before through 3 months after prediabetes diagnosis. Data will be analyzed using both qualitative content analysis methodology as well as quantitative methodology to characterize participants and compare their posts pre- and postdiagnosis. Results: The project was funded for 2015-2018, and enrollment will be completed by the end of 2018. Data coding is currently under way and the first results are expected to be submitted for publication in 2019. Results will include both quantitative and qualitative data about participants and the similarities and differences between coded social media posts. Conclusions: This pilot study is the first step in creating a taxonomy of social media indicators for prediabetes. Such a taxonomy would provide a tool for researchers and health care professionals to use social media postings for identifying those at greater risk of having prediabetes. Electronic Health Record (EHR) has the potential to transform the work required to create and deliver healthcare services. This has triggered large-scale adoption across hospitals. However, whether all hospitals obtain a similar effect from their EHR implementations remains an important question because there are significant differences differences in characteristics of hospitals adopting these systems. To examine differences in effects across hospitals, we examine whether the impacts of EHR applications are contingent on work domains, by assessing performance effects across hospitals with varying administrative scale and clinical complexity. Because EHRs constitute a suite of applications with different functionalities, examining the effects of different sets of applications is challenging due to nonlinear interdependencies between applications. Therefore, we use an archetype approach, identifying synergistic EHR (EHRSYN) archetype as an ideal portfolio—a conceptual anchor for a hospital’s EHR portfolio. We test contingencies by combining this technology archetype with the work domains—administrative scale and clinical complexity. We test our hypotheses using empirical data from 137 hospitals in California, hypothesizing the differences in effects of EHRs on financial, operational, and clinical performances across hospitals with different administrative scales (size) and clinical complexities (case-mix) of work. While hospitals gain the most by implementing a portfolio close to the EHRSYN archetype, our nuanced models reveal that the benefits of such portfolios increase for large hospitals and are greater for hospitals treating less complex cases. These findings underscore how variations in applications used and work domains demarcate boundaries related to the performance effects of EHRs. We present a detailed discussion of the theoretical contributions and practical implications of our findings.

Curriculum development is particularly challenging in computing-related disciplines as the computing industry changes more quickly than most. As information technology degrees have become relatively pervasive, some institutions that offer information systems degrees have recognized a need to develop specialist studies in information systems. This detailed case study shows the forces related to a successful implementation of new Health Informatics degrees. The case describes both an unsuccessful and then a successful attempt at essentially the same curriculum development. Although the case includes some local political factors, these represent typical considerations that a curriculum developer is likely to encounter.

Background Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system components are important regulators of bone metabolism, which have a predominant role in determining bone mineral density (BMD). While the serum levels of IGF-I are regulated by various systemic hormones and growth factors, IGF-II levels reflect the skeletal production relative to physical activity, mechanical loading, aging, race etc. Though various studies have been carried out among women of different ethnic groups to understand the relationship between serum levels of IGF-II and BMD, the results seem to be quite inconclusive. Methods We evaluated the same, recruiting South-Indian women who engage themselves in a wide variety of physical activities pertaining to their profession and life style. Results Serum levels of IGF-II and IGF binding protein (IGFBP)-3 showed positive correlation with calcaneal BMD, whereas IGFBP-4 showed negative correlation. These IGF system components exhibited similar correlations with serum bone formation markers and opposite trend with bone resorption marker. While both IGF-II and IGFBP-3 levels were observed to be decreased with aging and menopause, IGFBP-4 levels increased. Conclusions The alterations in serum levels of IGF-II and its binding proteins due to aging and menopause could be some of the major contributors of decreased calcaneal BMD observed among elderly women.

Unsaturated metal coordination sites in metal organic frameworks (MOFs) offer preferential hydrogen adsorption sites. In addition, MOFs can be applied as scaffolds for nano metal hydrides operating at elevated temperatures. For these reasons, the thermal stability of the framework with unsaturated Cu2+ coordination sites in a hydrogen atmosphere has been investigated in Cu3(BTC)2. It is found that Cu3(BTC)2 irreversibly binds 1.1 wt % of hydrogen at the temperatures between 323 and 423 K and 2 bar H2 pressure, which corresponds to three hydrogen atoms per BTC ligand. In accordance, FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy show that the BTC linkers are converted to their acid form, whereas XRD reveals the presence of reduced Cu0 metal particles and decomposition of the framework. When designing more strongly interacting MOFs for H2 storage applications or as template for light metal hydrides, one has to take possible reduction of the metal centers and the stability of the lattice into account.

Using double-quantum (2)H MAS NMR with (45)Sc recoupling and Bloch-Siegert compensated (2)H-{(45)Sc} TRAPDOR we have identified the overlapping NMR signals of deuterium with and without scandium neighbors in Mg(0.65)Sc(0.35)D(2), a candidate lightweight material for hydrogen storage. At room temperature we also observe a third type of mobile deuterium. Deuterium mobility among the three NMR-distinct sites has been investigated by means of one-and two-dimensional exchange spectroscopy (Exsy). Complete deuterium exchange within 0.1s is observed, which indicates that the three NMR-distinct sites are close together in the crystal lattice. The weak temperature- and MAS-rate dependences observed in Exsy are indicative for a combination of chemical exchange and spin diffusion.

Electrochemical deuteration of metastable Mg-Ti alloys is studied. To investigate the dynamics of deuterium atoms in the crystal host, the as-prepared hydrides are examined by means of NMR spectroscopy. Remarkably the host compound, which phase segregates upon gas phase deuteration at high temperatures, preserves its original structure during low temperature electrochemical deuteration. Deuterium atoms exchange dynamically between Mg-rich and Ti-rich sites.

Beef heart surimi was prepared using 4 washing conditions: (1) sodium phosphate buffer alone, (2) buffer 1 NaCl, (3) buffer 1 propyl gallate, and (4) buffer 1 sodium tripolyphosphate. Surimi samples were stored at 2 8C and analyzed periodically for protein oxidation, emulsifying properties, and dynamic gelling characteristics. Degree of oxidation differed among washing treatments. Addition of propyl gallate and sodium tripolyphosphate inhibited lipid oxidation but did not prevent protein oxidation. Physicochemical changes in prawn muscle as related to freezing and thawing procedures were monitored during 6 months frozen (-29°C) storage. Lipid oxidation (formation of TBARS) in raw muscle tissue reached a maximum between 1 and 3 months and then decreased thereafter. The kinetics of TBARS formation depended on the presence or absence of shell and rate of thawing. Texture (shear force) of raw muscle decreased slightly (3.5–8.1%) but shear force of cooked prawns increased considerably (13–27.9%) during storage. Cooking loss was higher for shell-off (20.2%) prawns than for shell-on prawns (14.4%), and correlated with increased toughness of cooked muscle. Shells did not protect raw muscle against lipid oxidation but reduced its cooking loss. Electrophoretic analysis showed no protein changes except that the intensity of all protein bands decreased slightly after 6 months storage.

Beef heart surimi was prepared in the presence or absence of propyl gallate and blended with or without cryoprotectants (sucrose, sorbitol). Samples were stored at -15, -29, and -70°C for 0.2, 2, 4, 12, 26 and 52 wk to observe oxidative changes in lipids (TBARS and dienes) and proteins (sulfhydryl, carbonyl, surface hydrophobicity, and myosin ATP-ase). Lipid and protein oxidation was minimal at -70°C. The freeze-thaw process caused lipid and protein oxidation in control samples at - 15 and -29°C. Oxidation increased rapidly after 4 wk. Propyl gallate inhibited lipid oxidation but was ineffective against protein changes. After 12 wk, cryoprotectants promoted lipid and protein oxidation in the absence of propyl gallate.

Thermal stability of proteins in frozen and thawed freshwater prawns was measured by differential scanning calorimetry. The onset and peak melting temperatures corresponding to myosin denaturation, as well as total enthalpy of denaturation of prawn muscle, decreased after freezing–thawing treatments. There were no significant differences in the thermal properties of prawns with changes in the rate of freezing, ie blast (fast) vs still (slow) freezing. However, the thermal properties were influenced by the rate of thawing. Rapid thawing using a combination of microwave and tap water resulted in a lower (P⩽0·05) thermal stability of prawn proteins compared to slow (refrigeration) or moderately fast (tap water) thawing methods. Keeping prawn shells intact or not intact during freezing–thawing did not alter the thermal properties of the prawn proteins. © 1997 SCI.

The role of water- and lipid-soluble antioxidants (propyl gallate, PG; α-tocopherol, α-Toc; ascorbate, Asc; tripolyphosphate, TPP) in protecting sulfhydryls in beef heart surimi was assessed. Sulfhydryl content was measured by reacting surimi samples with 5–5′-dithio-bis(2-nitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB). Formation of disulfide linkages in fresh and stored (7 days on ice) surimi and its salted paste (sol) was examined by electrophoretic analysis in the presence and absence of dithiothreitol. Loss of sulfhydryls occurred during storage in control (water-washed) and Asc-washed surimi, but the loss was prevented by PG, α-Toc, and TPP. Sulfhydryls were decreased in all samples except PG-washed surimi by the addition of0.6 M NaCl. Formation of disulfide as well as nondisulfide covalent linkages was evident in control and Asc-washed surimi samples. The nondisulfide linkages were almost completely absent in the presence of PG, α-Toc, and TPP.
