Aims: To evaluate the association between subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) and diabetic macular edema (DME). Design: A systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: A retrospective or prospective study comparing SFCT in diabetic retinopathy (DR) patients with and without DME was included. The data were collected from published studies retrieved from PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Ovid Medline, and Cochrane Library. The final search was conducted on July 2, 2023. Heterogeneity was assessed using I2 statistics, and a random-effects model was used for the meta analysis. This study calculated the weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for SFCT. Results: A total of 26 relevant studies were identified, involving a combined sample size of 3201 eyes (1302 DR-DME eyes and 1899 DR-no DME eyes). The results showed no significance between DR-DME and DR-no DME (WMD = − 3.57 μm; 95% CI −26.54 to 19.41 μm; P = 0.76). Sub-analysis based on nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) subgroups showed that the SFCT of NPDR-DME was significantly thinner than that of NPDR-no DME eyes (WMD = − 19.80 μm; 95% CI − 34.55 to − 5.04 μm; P = 0.009), while there was no significance in SFCT between PDR-DME and PDR-no DME (WMD = − 26.45 μm; 95% CI − 104.00 to 51.11 μm; P = 0.50). Conclusion: The SFCT was thinner in NPDR-DME eyes compared to NPDR-no DME eyes. Thinning SFCT might cause retinal hypoxia, and play an important role in DME occurrence. AIM: To develop an automated model for subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) detection in optical coherence tomography (OCT) images, addressing manual fovea location and choroidal contour challenges. METHODS: Two procedures were proposed: defining the fovea and segmenting the choroid. Fovea localization from B-scan OCT image sequence with three-dimensional reconstruction (LocBscan-3D) predicted fovea location using central foveal depression features, and fovea localization from two-dimensional en-face OCT (LocEN-2D) used a mask region-based convolutional neural network (Mask R-CNN) model for optic disc detection, and determined the fovea location based on optic disc relative position. Choroid segmentation also employed Mask R-CNN. RESULTS: For 53 eyes in 28 healthy subjects, LocBscan-3D's mean difference between manual and predicted fovea locations was 170.0 μm, LocEN-2D yielded 675.9 μm. LocEN-2D performed better in non-high myopia group (P=0.02). SFCT measurements from Mask R-CNN aligned with manual values. CONCLUSION: Our models accurately predict SFCT in OCT images. LocBscan-3D excels in precise fovea localization even with high myopia. LocEN-2D shows high detection rates but lower accuracy especially in the high myopia group. Combining both models offers a robust SFCT assessment approach, promising efficiency and accuracy for large-scale studies and clinical use.

PurposeMethodsResultsConclusionTo evaluate the effects of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) on choroidal vascularity index (CVI) and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT).The study included 56 eyes of 56 rheumatoid arthritis patients and 65 eyes of 65 age- and sex-matched healthy normal participants. CVIs of all participants were measured by transferring enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) images to the image J program that is software used for image binarization and compared between the 2 groups. SFCT, central macular thickness (CMT) and optic disc parameters of all participants were measured with spectral domain OCT and compared.The mean CVI values of the RA and control groups were 65.9 ± 1.52 and 68.56 ± 1.62, respectively, and were significantly lower in the RA group (p = 0.001). Mean SFCT values of the RA and control groups were 290.11 ± 15.18 and 332.88 ± 11.04, respectively, and SFCT was significantly lower in the RA group (p = 0.001). RA patients have thin SFCT and low CVI. Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) and choroidal vascularity index (CVI) in children with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Methods: A total of 80 children (40 with T1DM and 40 healthy controls) were included in this cross-sectional study. Enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) images of all participants were analyzed. The SFCT, total choroidal area (TCA), luminal area (LA), stromal area (SA), and CVI measurements were obtained from EDI-OCT images and compared between groups. The effects of HbA1c, fasting plasma glucose, and axial length measurements on choroidal measurements were investigated. Results: There was no significant difference between the groups according to TCA (0.84 [0.57-1.26] vs. 0.88 [0.65-1.16] mm2, p=0.745), LA (0.55 [0.41-0.79] vs. 0.59 [0.43-0.74] mm2, p=0.745), SA (0.27 [0.15-0.47] vs. 0.28 [0.15-0.47] mm2, p=0.935), and CVI (68.03 [66.5-70.5] vs. 67.75 [66.2-69.5] %, p=0.794), respectively. However, T1DM patients had thinner SFCT compared to control subjects (309.0 [327-489] and 398.5 [219-491], p<0.044). No correlation was found between HbA1c, fasting plasma glucose, axial length measurements, and SFCT, TCA, LA, SA, or CVI. Conclusion: Children with newly diagnosed T1DM have thinner SCFT in comparison to healthy children, however, no significant difference in CVI was observed between the groups. Aims: To compare the efficacy of two power levels in the 577 nm sub-threshold micro pulse laser (SML) treatment of acute central serous chorioretinopathy (aCSC). Methods: A retrospective comparative study was conducted. A total of 65 patients (65 eyes) with aCSC were enrolled. Of which, 32 patients received low power treatment and 33 patients received high power treatment of 577 nm SML. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central macular thickness (CMT), fundus-monitored microperimetry and height of subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) as well as subretinal fluid (SRF) were evaluated at baseline and 3 months. Results: The height of SFCT and retinal sensitivity in the low power treatment group was significantly better than that in the high power treatment group at 4 weeks (all p < 0.001). Mean BCVA improved from baseline to 3 months after treatments but with no significant difference between the two groups after 3 months (p > 0.05). In the low power group, the CMT decreased from 379.76 ± 139.23 μm at baseline to 176.56 ± 37.78 μm at 3 months, and in the high power group, the CMT decreased from 364.97 ± 143.08 at baseline to 191.77 ± 38.26 μm at 3 months. There was no significant difference at 3 months between the two groups (p > 0.05). Similar results were also found in term of SRF. Conclusions: Timely intervention with 577 nm SML with low power treatment can improve visual acuity, and included anatomic success without adverse events.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of low-level red light (LRL) in controlling the progression of myopia in children and adolescents. Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted from March 2022 to June 2022 at the Xuzhou First People's Hospital. A total of 73 children and adolescents with myopia, between the ages of 6 and 14, and meeting the inclusion criteria, were randomly divided into two groups. The experimental group wore single vision spectacles with LRL intervention, while the control group wore single vision spectacles alone. Spherical equivalent refraction (SER), axial length (AL), subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were measured for the participants. Data analysis was performed using chi-square test, independent samples t-test, and Mann-Whitney U test. To compare the changes in SER and AL between groups, we utilized the Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) model. Results: The experimental group was composed of 36 individuals, while the control group had 37. The mean age of the participants was 8.9 ± 2.0 years. No statistically significant distinctions in SER, AL and SFCT were observed between the two groups at baseline (P > 0.05). After 6 months of intervention, the experimental group's increase in SER (-0.01D; 95 % CI: -0.09, 0.06) was higher than that of the control group (-0.41D; 95 % CI: -0.51, -0.32), with a significance level of P < 0.001. Furthermore, the changes over time revealed significant differences between the two groups (Wald χ2group×time: 31.576, P < 0.001). The experimental group's AL increase (-0.02 mm; 95 % CI: -0.07, 0.03) was less than the control group's (0.22 mm; 95 % CI: 0.19, 0.25) (P < 0.001), with a significant difference over time between them (wald χ2group×time: 62.305, P < 0.001). SFCT change after 6 months in the experimental group was significantly greater (29.19 μm; 95 % CI: 18.48, 39.91) compared to that of the control group (-6.59 μm; 95 % CI: -14.28, 1.09) (P < 0.001). No adverse events were observed, and there was no evidence of fundus structural damage on OCT imaging. Conclusions: The findings suggest that low-level red light can effectively control myopia progression in children and adolescents within 6 months. No adverse reactions were observed.

Abstract Purpose To determine the distribution of subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) and its associated demographic, ocular, and systemic factors in an elderly population. Methods This report is part of the Tehran Geriatric Eye Study (TGES); a population-based cross-sectional study that was conducted on the urban elderly population of Tehran, aged 60 years and above using multi-stage stratified random cluster sampling. Choroidal imaging was performed using Spectralis SD-OCT with enhanced depth imaging mode. Results The average SFCT was 265.3 ± 25.9 μm (95% CI: 262.8-267.7) in the whole sample. According to the multiple generalized estimating equation (GEE) model, pseudophakia had a statistically significant direct relationship with SFCT (coefficient = 5.69), and history of cerebrovascular accident (CVA) was significantly inversely related to SFCT (coefficient=-4.77). Moreover, there was a significant interaction between age and sex in the average SFCT so that with increasing age, the SFCT increased in men and decreased in women. Conclusion The normal values of SFCT in the present study can be used as a reference database for clinical and research purposes. Age-sex interaction, pseudophakia, and history of CVA were significantly associated with SFCT in the elderly population. It is recommended that these factors be taken into account when interpreting SFCT data.

Background Polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) is a hemorrhagic fundus disease that can lead to permanent vision loss. Predicting the treatment response to anti-VEGF monotherapy in PCV is consistently challenging. We aimed to conduct a prospective multicenter study to explore and identify the imaging biomarkers for predicting the anti-VEGF treatment response in PCV patients, establish predictive model, and undergo multicenter validation.Methods This prospective multicenter study utilized clinical characteristics and images of treatment naïve PCV patients from 15 ophthalmic centers nationwide to screen biomarkers, develop model, and validate its performance. Patients from Peking Union Medical College Hospital were randomly divided into a training set and an internal validation set. A nomogram was established by univariate, LASSO regression, and multivariate regression analysis. Patients from the other 14 centers served as an external test set. Area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy were calculated. Decision curve analysis (DCA) and clinical impact curve (CIC) were utilized to evaluate the practical utility in clinical decision-making.Findings The eye distribution for the training set, internal validation set, and external test set were 66, 31, and 71, respectively. Purpose: To investigate the association of systemic oxidative stress level with myopic choroidal neovascularization (mCNV) and its clinical outcomes. Design: Retrospective case-control study. Participants: This retrospective study included 52 eyes of 52 healthy participants (mean age: 62.5 years), 30 eyes of 30 patients (mean age: 59.6 years) with high myopia (HM) but without mCNV, and 23 eyes of 23 patients (mean age: 61.8 years) with HM and mCNV who received intravitreal anti-VEGF antibody injections (IVIs) using a pro re nata regimen during the 6-month follow-up after the first IVI. Methods: Clinical findings, including oxidative stress parameters, such as diacron reactive oxygen metabolites (dROMs), biological antioxidant potential (BAP), and the BAP/dROM ratio (B/d ratio), were analyzed. Main Outcome Measures: Clinical features and oxidative stress parameters. Results: Both BAP and the B/d ratio were significantly lower in the HM/mCNV group than in the HM/no mCNV group (P = 0.002 and P = 0.012, respectively) and than in the control group (P = 0.001 and P = 0.026, respectively). In a multiple logistic regression analysis, axial length (odds ratio 1.878, P = 0.042) and the B/d ratio (odds ratio 0.470, P = 0.026) were significantly associated with mCNV. Dividing the patients into high and low B/d ratio groups (with a cutoff of 5.2) showed that subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) was lower (P = 0.002) and the number of IVI treatments was higher (P = 0.029) in the low B/d ratio group than in the high B/d ratio group. In multiple regression analyses, only the B/d ratio was significantly associated with SFCT (β = 0.684, P = 0.006). Conclusions: The oxidative stress level in eyes with HM differed according to mCNV, SFCT, and the number of IVI treatments. Measuring oxidative stress parameters might be useful in eyes with HM both for assessing the risk of developing mCNV and determining disease activity. Purpose: Comparison of choroidal vascularity index (CVI) and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) in active and inactive TED. Settings and Design: An observational, cross-sectional analytical study conducted at a tertiary eye care hospital in North India that included patients with active and inactive TED. Methods: Demographic details and clinical evaluation were performed for all TED patients. SFCT was determined with OCT by using the Cirrus linear measurement tool. CVI was calculated using Image J software. The SFCT and CVI measurements were compared between both groups. Statistical Analysis Used: Comparison between active and inactive TED groups was done using Mann–Whitney U test for non-parametric data and Student t test for parametric data. Multivariate regression analysis was performed with SFCT and CVI as dependent variables. Results: Sixty-two eyes of 31 patients were included. Thirteen eyes had active TED, and 49 eyes had inactive TED. SFCT was significantly lower in eyes with higher clinical activity score (CAS) and older age. No significant difference was found in CVI between active and inactive TED eyes. Conclusion: SFCT was lower in eyes with higher CAS and older age. Our findings differ from previous studies, which showed a positive correlation between SFCT and CAS. There was no significant difference in CVI between active and inactive TED eyes. Purpose: We aimed to investigate hemodynamic changes in the retina, peripapillary area, and choroid in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Methods: This prospective case series included 35 eyes of 35 patients. Vessel density (VD) of superficial capillary plexus, deep capillary plexus, radial peripapillary capillary, foveal avascular zone area, and subfoveal choroidal thickness changes were evaluated using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) 1 day before and 2 weeks after surgery. The correlation of these parameters with aortic cross-clamp (ACC) duration and cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) duration was evaluated. Results: There were no differences in the OCTA measurements of the patients after CABG compared to before surgery (P > 0.05). Inside-disc VD showed a negative correlation with both ACC (P = 0.036) and CPB duration (P = 0.048); peripapillary inferior hernia showed a negative correlation with both ACC (P = 0.042) and CPB duration (P = 0.027). Another negative correlation was observed between mean peripapillary VD and CPB duration (P = 0.039). Conclusion: The CPB procedure had no permanent effect on retinal choroid and optic disc blood flow postoperatively. Prolonged ACC and CPB times seem to be important in terms of optic nerve blood flow. Clinicians should be alert for postoperative ocular complications after long surgeries.

Abstract Introduction With advancements in imaging technology, researchers have been able to identify more distinctive imaging features of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). However, existing research primarily concentrates on young patients aged 50 years and below, leaving a dearth of studies on elderly CSC patients. Previous studies indicate that elderly CSC patients may exhibit unique imaging characteristics and have a clinical prognosis that significantly differs from younger patients. This study aimed to evaluate the characteristics of retina, choroid structure, and blood flow in elderly patients with chronic CSC (cCSC) examined multimode imaging and try to find new pathogenesis information of it. Methods Using a cut-off age of 50 years, patients with chronic central serous chorioretinopathy were divided into two groups: older and younger. The control group consisted of 40 healthy individuals, with their right eyes assigned. Various clinical features were recorded, including the incidence of ellipsoid zone rupture (EZ-), fibrin in the subretinal fluid (SRF), pachydrusen, subretinal drusenoid deposits (SDD), pigment epithelial detachment (PED), double-layer sign (DLS), and choroidal lipid globule cavern. Measurements were taken for the thickness of the outer nuclear layer (ONL), the length of the extended outer photoreceptor segment (POS), the height and width of SRF, the vascular density of each layer of the retinal capillary plexus, the central macular thickness (CMT), and the subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT). Results The proportion of females in the elderly group (43.75%) was significantly higher than that in the youth group (22.41%) (p = 0.034). The degree of hyperopia in the elderly group (1.03 ± 0.73) was higher than that in the youth group (0.26 ± 1.06), with a significant difference in BCVA (p = 0.05). To compare the efficacy and safety of low-level red light (LRL) in controlling myopia progression at 3 different powers: 0.37 mW, 0.60 mW, and 1.20 mW. Single-center, single-masked, randomized controlled trial. Two hundred children aged 6-15 with myopia of –0.50 diopter (D) or more and astigmatism of –2.50 D or less were enrolled from April to May 2022. Follow-up ended in December 2022. Participants were assigned randomly to 3 intervention groups and 1 control group (1:1:1:1). All participants wore single-vision spectacles. Moreover, the intervention group randomly received LRL at 3 different powers twice daily for 3 minutes per session, with a minimum 4-hour interval. Changes in spherical equivalent (SE), axial length (AL), and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) were measured. After 6 months, SE progression was significantly lower in the 0.37-mW group (0.01 D; 95% confidence interval [CI], –0.12 to 0.15), 0.60-mW group (–0.05 D; 95% CI, –0.18 to 0.07), and 1.20-mW group (0.16 D; 95% CI, 0.03 to 0.30) compared to the control group (–0.22 D; 95% CI, –0.50 to 0.30; adjusted P < 0.001 for all). AL changes in the 0.37-mW group (0.04 mm; 95% CI, –0.01 to 0.08), 0.60-mW group (0.00 mm; 95% CI, –0.05 to 0.05), and 1.20-mW group (–0.04 mm; 95% CI, –0.08 to 0.01) were significantly smaller than the control group (0.27 mm; 95% CI, 0.22 to 0.33; adjusted P < 0.001 for all). Similarly, increases in SFCT were significantly greater in the 0.37-mW group (22.63 μm; 95% CI, 12.13 to 33.34 μm), 0.60-mW group (36.17 μm; 95% CI, 24.37 to 48.25 μm), and 1.20-mW group (42.59 μm; 95% CI, 23.43 to 66.24 μm) than the control group (–5.07 μm; 95% CI, –10.32 to –0.13 μm; adjusted P < 0.001 for all). No adverse events were observed. LRL effectively controlled myopia progression at 0.37 mW, 0.60 mW, and 1.20 mW. Further research is required. The degree of hyperopia in the elderly group (1.03 ± 0.73) was higher than that in the youth group (0.26 ± 1.06), with a significant difference in BCVA (p = 0.05). The thickness of SFCT, CMT, ONL in the elderly group, and the length of photoreceptor outer segment in the elderly group were thinner than those in the youth group (p < 0.05). Choroidal capillary perfusion area (CCPA), macular area, and paramacular area were lower in the elderly group than those in the youth group in the full scan range (p < 0.05). The blood flow densities of deep capillary plexus (DCP), intermediate capillary plexus (ICP), and superficial capillary plexus (SCP) in the whole scan range, macular area, and paramacular area were lower in the elderly group than in the youth group, but the differences were not statistically significant. Conclusions: In conclusion, our data suggest that elderly patients with cCSC may experience different disease outcomes. Elderly cCSC patients exhibit less gender bias, poorer vision, more severe structural damage and ischemia in the choroid and retina, and have a higher risk of developing choroidal neovascularization. Purpose: The present study aims to evaluate the optic nerve, macula, and choroidal changes in both rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and primary Sjögren’s syndrome (SjS) patients, and to compare these findings with age-matched healthy volunteers. Methods: This study included 46 RA patients, 33 primary SjS patients, and 37 age-matched healthy volunteers. All of the patients underwent a thorough ophthalmological examination, during which measurements of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), ganglion cell layer(GCL), and subfoveal choroidal thickness (CT) were taken using OCT (optical coherence tomography). The measurements taken from the right eye of each patient were used to compare among the groups. Results: RNFL thickness in superior quadrant was found to be statistically significantly thinner in the eyes with RA when compared to the control group (p = 0.022). In the nasal quadrant, the RNFL thickness was significantly thinner in patients with primary SjS compared to healthy individuals (p = 0.036). Also, the temporal quadrant RNFL was significantly thinner in RA patients than in the primary SjS patients (p = 0.033). GCL thickness was observed to be thinner in all quadrants of both RA and primary SjS groups compared to the control group. However, the difference was not found to be statistically significant. Subfoveal CT was observed to be thicker in RA and SjS groups compared to the control group, but this difference was also not statistically significant. Conclusion: Systemic autoimmune diseases like RA and primary SjS can lead to a decrease in RNLF and GCL thickness, which can impair visual acuity even in the absence of ocular symptoms. Purpose: We aimed to investigate hemodynamic changes in the retina, peripapillary area, and choroid in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Methods: This prospective case series included 35 eyes of 35 patients. Vessel density (VD) of superficial capillary plexus, deep capillary plexus, radial peripapillary capillary, foveal avascular zone area, and subfoveal choroidal thickness changes were evaluated using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) 1 day before and 2 weeks after surgery. The correlation of these parameters with aortic cross-clamp (ACC) duration and cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) duration was evaluated. Results: There were no differences in the OCTA measurements of the patients after CABG compared to before surgery (P > 0.05). Inside-disc VD showed a negative correlation with both ACC (P = 0.036) and CPB duration (P = 0.048); peripapillary inferior hernia showed a negative correlation with both ACC (P = 0.042) and CPB duration (P = 0.027). Another negative correlation was observed between mean peripapillary VD and CPB duration (P = 0.039). Conclusion: The CPB procedure had no permanent effect on retinal choroid and optic disc blood flow postoperatively. Prolonged ACC and CPB times seem to be important in terms of optic nerve blood flow. Clinicians should be alert for postoperative ocular complications after long surgeries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thus, we aimed to investigate the relationship between lipid profile and SFCT in patients with PDR.Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study. The included participants were inpatients who underwent vitrectomy for PDR with type 2 diabetes and contralateral eyes of PDR patients meeting the criteria. Multivariate linear regression analysis was used to determine the independent association between lipid profile and SFCT.Results: A total of 131 participants with PDR were enrolled in the final analysis. The average age of the participants was 55.76 ± 9.88 years, and the average SFCT was 276.10 ± 92.92 μm. Multivariate linear regression model results showed that in the fully adjusted model, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) had a negative association with SFCT (β = − 16.51, 95% CI: − 29.57, − 3.46; P = 0.0148; β = − 42.65, 95% CI: − 82.60, − 2.70; P = 0.0390; β = − 17.89, 95% CI: − 33.24, − 2.54; P = 0.0245, respectively), while triglyceride was not significantly associated with SFCT (β = 5.23, 95% CI: − 18.57, 29.02; P = 0.6678). Furthermore, the results of stratified analysis showed that except for triglyceride, the trends of total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, and SFCT were consistent among different stratifications in participants.Conclusion: The cholesterol profile had a significant negative association with SFCT in Chinese PDR patients, but triglyceride was not significantly associated with SFCT. Adjusting for diurnal variation, different types or scan modes of OCT did not significantly affect the results. Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the choroidal vascularity index (CVI) as an activity criterion in chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) and as a measure of treatment response after full‐dose‐full‐fluence photodynamic therapy (fd‐ff‐PDT). Methods: This fellow‐eye‐controlled, retrospective cohort study included 23 patients with unilateral chronic CSC treated with fd‐ff‐PDT (6 mg/m2; 50 μcm2; 83 s). Subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT, μm) and CVI (%) of the affected and fellow eyes at baseline as well as at 1, 3 and 6 months after fd‐ff‐PDT were compared. Results: The patients' mean age was 43.4 ± 7.3 years, and 18 (78.3%) were male. CVI was comparable between the affected and fellow eyes at baseline (66.09 ± 1.56 vs. 65.84 ± 1.57, p = 0.59). However, it became significantly lower in the affected eyes 1 (64.45 ± 1.68 vs. 65.87 ± 1.19, p = 0.002), 3 (64.21 ± 2.08 vs. 65.71 ± 1.59, p = 0.009) and 6 (64.47 ± 2.19 vs. 65.62 ± 1.52, p = 0.045) months after fd‐ff‐PDT. The mean SFCT and the mean CVI were significantly decreased in the affected eyes at all follow‐up visits compared with baseline after fd‐ff‐PDT (p < 0.001). Conclusion: At baseline, CVI was comparable between affected and fellow eyes. Therefore, its use as an activity criterion in chronic CSC patients is questionable. Abstract Purpose: To evaluate the effects of intravitreal ziv-aflibercept injections (IVZ) on subfoveal choroidal thickness (SCT) as well as on central macular thickness (CMT) and on best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) changes in eyes with center-involved diabetic macular edema (CI-DME). Methods: Fifty-seven eyes of 36 patients with CI-DME were included in this prospective interventional case series. Structural optical coherence tomography (OCT) and enhanced depth imaging OCT were performed at baseline followed by three monthly 1.25 mg IVZ injections. Changes of SCT, CMT, and BCVA at each follow-up session were assessed. The association between baseline SCT and its monthly changes with final visual and anatomical outcomes were also assessed. Results: CMT at baseline, and at the first, second, and third month follow-up sessions were 396 ± 119, 344 ± 115, 305 ± 89, and 296 ± 101 μm, respectively (P-value < 0.001). SCT at baseline, and at months one, two, and three were 236 ± 47, 245 ± 56, 254 ± 54, and 241 ± 54 μm, respectively (P-value > 0.99). Corresponding figures for BCVA were 0.58 ± 0.29, 0.47 ± 0.31, 0.4 ± 0.24, and 0.37 ± 0.23 LogMAR, respectively (P-value < 0.001). There was a statistically significant positive correlation between BCVA and CMT changes following IVZ injections (P-value < 0.001). However, there were no significant correlations between SCT changes and visual acuity (VA) and CMT changes following IVZ injections. Conclusion: IVZ improved visual outcomes and macular thickness profiles in patients with CI-DME. However, IVZ had no significant effect on SCT. Objectives: To study the effect of Phacoemulsification on Sub Foveal Choroidal Thickness (SFCT) and Central Macular Thickness (CMT) as measured by Swept Source Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). Methods: This experimental study was conducted at Armed Forces Institute of Ophthalmology (AFIO), Rawalpindi from April 2021 to February 2022. One hundred eyes of 100 patients with age related cataract underwent uneventful phacoemulsification surgery. Pre-operative SFCT and CMT was measured and compared with SFCT and CMT at one week, one month and three months after surgery using swept source OCT. Results: Mean age of study population was 56.76±8.31 years. Out of 100 patients, 46 (46%) were males and 54 (54%) were females. Mean pre-operative CMT, one week, one month and three months post-operative CMT was 233.95±9.46 µm, 232.88±8.59 µm, 230.38±10.62 µm and 230.67±7.55 µm respectively. Mean pre-operative SFCT, one week, one month and three months post-operative SFCT was 337.14±8.41 µm, 339.14±9.63 µm, 339.39±11.96 µm and 351.39±9.19 µm respectively. The difference of mean change in CMT from baseline at one week, one month and three months post-operatively was not statistically significant. The difference of mean change in SFCT from baseline at one week and one month post-operatively was not statistically significant. However, the difference of mean change in SFCT from baseline at three months post-operatively was statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: Uneventful phacoemulsification surgery does not have any effect on central macular thickness, however there is a significant increase in subfoveal choroidal thickness at three months after surgery. Introduction: Little research has examined the effects of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy on subfoveal choroidal thickness (SCT), choroidal blood flow, aqueous flare, and humor levels of growth and inflammatory factors in patients with macular edema due to central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). Methods: In 58 patients with macular edema due to CRVO treated by intravitreal ranibizumab injection (IRI), we retrospectively assessed best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA, assessed as the logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution [logMAR]), 8 aqueous factors (by suspension array), mean blur rate (MBR; estimated by laser speckle flowgraphy as a measure of choroidal blood flow), aqueous flare (with a laser flare meter), and SCT and central macular thickness (CMT; by optical coherence tomography). Results: After 4 weeks, IRI resulted in a significant improvement in BCVA and CMT and a significant reduction in SCT, choroidal MBR, and aqueous flare. SCT was significantly positively correlated with placental growth factor and significantly negatively correlated with platelet-derived growth factor-AA, and change in SCT was significantly negatively correlated with change in BCVA (logMAR). Aqueous flare was significantly negatively correlated with SCT. Conclusion: Growth and inflammatory factors may be associated with SCT, and changes in SCT may be associated with changes in BCVA after IRI to treat macular edema due to CRVO. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to comprehensively analyze various parameters in advanced glaucoma patients to identify the factors that can affect best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in advanced glaucoma. This cross-sectional retrospective study included 113 patients (mean age, 61.66 ± 13.26 years; males, 67) who had advanced glaucomatous damage (113 eyes; mean BCVA, 0.18 ± 0.38 logMAR; mean deviation of 30-2 visual field [VF], −19.08 ± 6.23 dB). Peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and total and segmented macular thickness (RNFL, ganglion cell layer (GCL), and inner plexiform layer (GCL)) were measured using Spectralis optical coherence tomography (OCT). Correlations between BCVA and OCT parameters or 30-2 VF parameters were assessed using Pearson correlation analysis. Multivariate regression analysis was performed to determine the factors associated with BCVA in advanced glaucoma patients. Peripapillary RNFL thickness, subfoveal choroidal thickness, and global macular RNFL, GCL, IPL, and total thickness were found to be significantly correlated with BCVA and central visual function. Multivariate analysis showed a significant correlation between subfoveal choroidal thickness and BCVA. In addition, central VF mean sensitivity, especially inferior hemifield, showed a significant relationship with BCVA. Purpose: To quantify the structural changes in choroidal vessels and to observe choroid microstructural changes in different age and sex groups in a healthy Chinese population. Methods: Enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) was employed to analyze the luminal area, stromal area, total choroidal area, subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), choroidal vascularity index (CVI), large choroidal vessel layer (LCVL), choriocapillaris–medium choroidal vessel layer, and LCVL/SFCT of the choroid in the subfoveal macular area within 1500 μm of the macula. We analyzed the age- and sex-related changes in the subfoveal choroidal structure. Results: A total of 1566 eyes from 1566 healthy individuals were included. The mean age of the participants was 43.62 ± 23.29 years, the mean SFCT of healthy individuals was 269.30 ± 66.43 μm, LCVL/SFCT percentage was 77.21 ± 5.84%, and the mean macular CVI was 68.39 ± 3.15%. CVI was maximum in the 0–10 years group, decreasing with age, and the lowest values occurred in the >80 years group; LCVL/SFCT was the lowest in the 0–10 years group, increasing with age and reaching a maximum in the >80 years group. CVI showed a significant negative correlation with age, and LCVL/SFCT showed a significant positive correlation with age. There was no statistically significant difference between males and females. Interrater and intrarater reliability was less variable with CVI than with SFCT. Conclusions: The choroidal vascular area and CVI decreased with age in the healthy Chinese population, of which the age-related decrease in vascular components maybe dominated by the decrease in choriocapillaris and medium choroidal vessels. Introduction: The aim of this study was to quantitatively assess fundus tessellated density (FTD) and associated factors by artificial intelligence (AI) in young adults. Methods: A total of 1,084 undergraduates (age, 17–23 years old) were enrolled in November 2021. The students were divided into three groups according to axial length (AL): group 1 (AL <24.0 mm, n = 155), group 2 (24 mm ≤ AL <26 mm, n = 578), and group 3 (AL ≥26 mm, n = 269). FTD was calculated by extracting the fundus tessellations as the regions of interest (circle 1, diameter of 3.0 mm; circle 2, diameter of 6.0 mm) and then calculating the average exposed choroid area per unit area of fundus. Results: Among 1,084 students, 1,002 (92.5%) students' FTDs were extracted. The mean FTD was 0.06 ± 0.06 (range, 0–0.40). In multivariate analysis, FTD was significantly associated with male sex, longer AL, thinner subfoveal choroid thickness (SFCT), increased choriocapillaris vessel density (VD), and decreased deeper choroidal VD (all p < 0.05). In circle 1 (diameter of 3.0 mm) and circle 2 (diameter of 6.0 mm), analysis of variance showed that the FTD of the nasal region (p < 0.05) was significantly larger than that of the superior, inferior, and temporal regions. Conclusion: AI-based imaging processing could improve the accuracy of fundus tessellation diagnosis. The aim of this study is to determine central macular thickness (CMT) and subfoveal choroid thickness (SFCT) in eyes with inferior oblique muscle overaction (IOOA) using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) with enhanced depth imaging (EDI) mode, as well as macular layers using OCT segmentation software. In this retrospective study, OCT parameters collected from 42 eyes with unilateral IOOA were compared to those from 39 contralateral healthy eyes. The CMT and SFCT were measured using EDI SD-OCT, and each retinal layer was measured using SD-OCT in the central 1, 3, 6 mm areas identified by the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS). Heidelberg segmentation was used to define the different layers of the macula. There were no morphological abnormalities in the macula in either eyes with unilateral IOOA or contralateral healthy eyes. The CMT, SFCT, and retinal layer thickness did not differ statistically between IOOA eyes and contralateral healthy eyes (P>0.05). Subgroups of IOOA eyes based on concomitant strabismus, which included IOOA only, IOOA plus esotropia, and IOOA plus exotropia, or by degree of IOOA, which included mild and severe forms, also revealed negligible differences in CMT, SFCT, and other retinal layer thickness (P=0.34, P=0.91, P>0.05, respectively) The total thickness of the ganglion cell and inner plexiform layer decreased non-significantly in severe IOOA compared to mild IOOA (P=0.059). Furthermore, the outer plexiform layer was non-significantly thicker in IOOA plus esotropia eyes (p=0.052). Despite the fact that IOOA had no discernible impact on CMT, SFCT, or macular layers, it is critical that this finding be confirmed by further large-scale studies comparing patients to healthy individuals. Purpose: To investigate the effects of refractive accommodation on subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) in silicone oil (SO)-filled eyes. Methods: This retrospective, self-comparative study was conducted on 40 patients with unilateral macula-on rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, who underwent vitrectomy and SO tamponade. The SFCT of SO-filled eyes and the fellow control eyes were measured using optical coherence tomography at their one-month visit after surgery. The patients wore soft contact positive lenses for 24 h in the SO-filled eyes, to correct their refractive error. SFCT and choroidal vascularity index (CVI) were measured before and after wearing the contact lenses. Mean SFCT was compared between SO-filled eyes and the fellow control eyes, and SFCT and CVI were compared before and after refractive error correction in the SO-filled eyes. Results: Mean SFCT of SO-filled eyes (221.52 ± 38.41 um) was less than that of the fellow eyes (273.41 ± 31.30 um) (P < 0.001). After refractive error correction, the mean SFCT increased to 269.28 ± 36.90 um(P < 0.001). However, CVI decreased from 57.01 ± 2.41 to 55.39 ± 2.39 (P < 0.05). Conclusions: SFCT reduction in SO-filled eyes was primarily due to the hyperopia status. The non-uniform change in CVI suggests that changes in CT are mainly attributed to a greater expansion of the stromal area instead of the choroidal vascular area. Objective: Hypertension (HT) can cause vascular and microvascular changes. There is no barrier between systemic blood and ocular region. Changes in choroidal perfusion pressure due to HT may impair retinal function and oxygenation, and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SCT) may be affected by these changes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of arterial HT on SCT in children. Method: The study was performed on 102 cases (51 patients and 51 controls), prospectively. Optical coherence tomography was used for the measurement of SCT and mean values of 3 consecutive measurements were evaluated. All cases had blood pressure measurements during all day via ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. Also, both groups were evaluated for the target organ damage. Results: There were 51 cases in patient group with the average age of 14.4+-2.8 years, and the rest of 51 control cases were meanly 14.5+-2.8 years in age (p=0.980). SCT was measured thinner in patients with target organ damage than the cases without target organ damage (p=0.027). SCT measurements of patients and control cases were not statistically significant different (p=0.569). Especially SCT was statistically significantly thinner in cases with increased left ventricular mass, left ventricular mass index and hypertensive nephropathy (p=0.02, p=0.00, p=0.039, respectively). Conclusion: Choroidal thickness decreases in patients with HT who develop target organ damage. Therefore, close follow-up of hypertensive patients with appropriate life changes and medical treatments is important before target organ damage develops.

Abstract Purpose To investigate the effects of refractive accommodation on subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) in silicone oil (SO)-filled eyes. Methods This retrospective, self-comparative study was conducted on 40 patients with unilateral macula-on rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, who underwent vitrectomy and SO tamponade. The SFCT of SO-filled eyes and the fellow control eyes were measured using optical coherence tomography at their one-month visit after surgery. The patients wore soft contact positive lenses for 24 h in the SO-filled eyes, to correct their refractive error. Purpose: To evaluate the role of swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) in the management of acute Vogt–Koyanagi–Harada's (VKH) disease. Methods: Retrospective analysis of SS-OCT images of acute VKH patients between January 2015 and February 2020 in a tertiary eye care hospital. Results: We studied 34 eyes of 17 patients with acute probable VKH disease. The mean age was 31.6 ± 10.4 years. Twelve patients were women. The mean follow-up was 17.1 ± 9.3 months. The mean visual acuity was 0.86 logMAR (Snellen equivalent: 6/45) at presentation and 0.18 logMAR (Snellen equivalent: 6/9) at the last follow-up. The mean subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) was 784.97 microns at presentation, 431.40 microns at the first month of therapy, 453.94 microns at six months of therapy, and 405.83 microns at the last follow-up. Qualitative features noted on SS-OCT on presentation was subretinal fluid (SRF) in 29 (85%) eyes, subretinal hyperreflective dots in 34 (100%) eyes, subretinal septa in 33 (97%) eyes, RPE undulations in 21 (61.7%) eyes, posterior vitreous cells in 34 (100%) eyes, SRF around disc in 9 (26%) eyes, and disc swelling in 34 (100%) eyes. At the end of 1 year of follow-up, RPE undulations were absent in 30 eyes (88%) and disc swelling was notably absent in all 34 eyes (100%), though SRF around disc was noted in 4 eyes (11.7%) of 2 patients who had recurrences. Conclusion: SFCT, SRF around disc, RPE undulation, and disc swelling may be important indicators on SS-OCT to guide therapy and prognosticate recurrences in acute VKH.

PurposeThe purpose of the present study was to measure in central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) the salivary cortisol awake response (CAR) delta percentage (Δ%) variation, a distinct and robust indicator of cortisol rhythm during wakefulness, commonly proposed as a marker of hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis activity, whose alteration is frequently associated with several adverse health outcomes.MethodsIn the present cross-sectional observational study, salivary CAR Δ% variation was assessed in 17 adult male subjects affected by acute naïve CSC and compared to 17 matched healthy controls. Choroid vasculature metrics were assessed in the study population by measuring the subfoveal choroidal thickness (FCT) and the choroidal vascularity index (CVI) by the imaging technique of enhanced-depth imaging spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (EDI-SD-OCT). Furthermore, flow signal void area features of the choriocapillaris were evaluated in the study population using OCT angiography (OCTA).ResultsBoth the control and CSC groups showed a physiological cortisol increase that occurred during the first 30 min after awaking. However, CSC adult male patients showed remarkably blunted CAR Δ% variation in comparison with controls, which might reflect a CSC-related imbalance of HPA axis activity. Statistically significant correlations were shown by Pearson’s correlation test between salivary CAR Δ% and the selected choroidal and choriocapillaris imaging biomarkers (FCT, CVI, and flow signal void area) in the study population.ConclusionIn conclusion, alterations of the CAR Δ% increase, associated with choroidal-retinal metrics, might provide a window into the physiopathology of acute CSC, suggesting a possible common factor to explain the association between stress and CSC.

Objective To investigate the changes and significance of choroidal vascular index (CVI) in patients with branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) before and after anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatment. Methods Fifty patients (50 eyes) with monocular BRVO were slowly injected with anti-VEGF drug ranibizumab injections 0. 05 mL (including ranibizumab 0. 5 mg) into the vitreous cavity. Before treatment and 1 month after treatment, visual acuity chart and OCT were performed to detect the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and measure the central macular thickness within 1500 µm (CMT), subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), and choroidal vascular index (CVI). Another 50 normal persons matched with age and sex were selected as the control group. Purpose: To evaluate anatomical and visual results of eyes with naive myopic choroidal neovascularization (mCNV) in patients treated with intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapies. Material and methods: This is a retrospective, non-randomized, comperative, intervetional study. One hundred fourteen eyes of 114 patients with mCNV who underwent intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB), intravitreal ranibizumab (IVR) or intravitreal aflibercept (IVA) monotherapy injections were enrolled into the study. The best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central macular thickness (CMT) and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) were compared among the groups during the follow-up periods at the beginning, months 1, 3, 6, 12, and the final visit. Results: The mean age of the patients was 47.76 ± 10.57 years (range, 33–72 years) and the mean follow-up period was 23.34 ± 6.81 months (range, 13–38 months). The mean BCVA denoted a significantly improve at each group (p < 0.05). In terms of an inter-group analysis of all 3 groups, at months 1, 6, and 12 and final visit, the BCVA were statistically significantly better in the IVA group when compared to both IVB and IVR groups (p = 0.021, p = 0.032, p = 0.024, p = 0.012). There was a significant decrease in CMT following IVB (236.49 ± 40.91 μm–190.74 ± 50.12 μm), IVA (232.91 ± 46.29 μm–193.73 ± 46.81 μm) and IVR (234.78 ± 45.37 μm–192.21 ± 37.27 μm) between baseline and final visit (p = 0.018, p = 0.002, p < 0.001, respectively). There was a statistically significant decrease in SFCT values between baseline and final examination only in the IVA group (p < 0.001). The mean number of injections were 9.18 ± 3.18 (range; 3 to 13) in IVB, 6.46 ± 2.93 (range; 3–11) in IVR and 4.45 ± 1.42 (range; 2–7) in IVA (p = 0.028). Conclusion: All three anti-VEGFs were found to be effective in terms of visual results in patients with mCNV. However, we demonstrated that IVA reduces the need for anti-VEGF when compared to patients who received both IVB and IVR. The changes in subfoveal choroidal thickness after orthokeratology are crucial in myopia retardation; this study aimed to identify the risk factors that could be incorporated into a predictive model for subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFChT) that would provide further personalized and clinically specific information for myopia control. A one-year prospective study was conducted in the West China Hospital, Sichuan University. Basic information (age, gender, and height) was collected from all subjects. Initial spherical equivalent, axial length, intraocular pressure, central corneal thickness, and subfoveal choroidal thickness were measured, and the ocular environmental factors were also collected. All the measured parameters were recorded in the follow-up period for one year. After the analysis of univariate analysis, statistically significant factors were substituted into the multivariate three-level model. Thirty-three adolescents aged 8–14 years old were enrolled in this study; the results show that the subfoveal choroidal thickness in both eyes changed significantly after 12 months of lens wearing (pR < 0.0001, pL < 0.0001). The axial length was negatively correlated with the change in the SFChT after 12 months of lens wearing (r = −0.511, p = 0.002). After multilevel model analysis, the statistically significant factor was shown to have an important influence on the changes in the subfoveal choroidal thickness, which was the average near-work time. This suggested that the SFChT personal predictions can be made regarding changes in myopic adolescents after orthokeratology using the factor of daily average near-work time. Purpose: To assess choroidal changes associated to optic disc pit maculopathy (ODP-M) and their evolution after surgical treatment., Design: Multicentric retrospective case series., Methods: Analysis of 42 patients affected by unilateral ODP-M undergoing surgical treatment between 2013 and 2023. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) were performed at baseline and postoperative months 1, 6, 12, 24 and most recent follow-up. Subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) and peripapillary choroidal thickness (PPCT) were measured in ODP-M and fellow eyes. The presence of retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) atrophy was used to distinguish between "early" and "advanced" disease, and data regarding fluid localization were collected., Results: Baseline SFCT in ODP-M eyes was significantly higher than fellow eyes (386.8±88.9 vs. 334.4±72.2 μm, p=0.002), differently from PPCT (192.6±47.8 vs. 181.2±45.7 μm, p=0.46). SFCT significantly decreased 1 month post-operatively (mean reduction 36.5 μm, p=0.009) and remained below pre-operative values throughout the follow-up, showed a mean reduction of 79.4 μm at final follow-up (p<0.001). Conversely, PPCT showed no changes between pre-operative and post-operative values (all p>0.05). Nine eyes (21.4%) showed submacular dilated choroidal vessels, correlated with the presence of subretinal fluid (p=0.008) and reducing in caliber after surgical treatment. The 10 eyes (23.8%) with "advanced" disease had lower baseline SFCT and worse BCVA compared to the "early" subgroup, and showed a delayed reduction of choroidal swelling post-operatively., Conclusion: Subfoveal choroid may thicken and remodel in response to ODP-M, eventually returning to physiological values after surgical treatment. Moreover, the presence of RPE atrophy may influence retino-choroidal balance. Background: No study has investigated the change regularity between age and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) in proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR)., Aim: To investigate the relationship between the SFCT and age in Chinese patients with PDR., Methods: This was a cross-sectional retrospective study. The participants were hospitalized individuals with type 2 diabetes who underwent vitrectomy for PDR. Con-tralateral eyes that met the criteria were included in the study. All necessary laboratory tests were performed at the time of admission. Central macular thickness (CMT) and SFCT were two quantitative assessments made using enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography. CMT was measured automatically and SFCT was measured manually with digital calipers provided by the Heidelberg Eye Explorer software., Results: The final analysis included a total of 234 individuals with PDR. The average age was 55.60 years old ± 10.03 years old, and 57.69% of the population was male. Univariate analysis revealed a significant negative connection between age and SFCT in patients with PDR [β = -2.44, 95% confidence interval (95%CI): -3.46 to -1.42; P < 0.0001]. In the fully adjusted model, the correlation between SFCT and age remained steady (β = -1.68, 95%CI: -2.97 to -0.39; P = 0.0117). Spline smoothing showed that the relationship between SFCT and age in patients with PDR was non-linear, with an inflection point at 54 years of age., Conclusion: Our findings suggest that age is a key determinant of choroidal thickness. Aims: To compare the efficacy of two power levels in the 577 nm sub-threshold micro pulse laser (SML) treatment of acute central serous chorioretinopathy (aCSC)., Methods: A retrospective comparative study was conducted. A total of 65 patients (65 eyes) with aCSC were enrolled. Of which, 32 patients received low power treatment and 33 patients received high power treatment of 577 nm SML. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central macular thickness (CMT), fundus-monitored microperimetry and height of subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) as well as subretinal fluid (SRF) were evaluated at baseline and 3 months., Results: The height of SFCT and retinal sensitivity in the low power treatment group was significantly better than that in the high power treatment group at 4 weeks (all p < 0.001). Mean BCVA improved from baseline to 3 months after treatments but with no significant difference between the two groups after 3 months (p > 0.05). In the low power group, the CMT decreased from 379.76 ± 139.23 μm at baseline to 176.56 ± 37.78 μm at 3 months, and in the high power group, the CMT decreased from 364.97 ± 143.08 at baseline to 191.77 ± 38.26 μm at 3 months. There was no significant difference at 3 months between the two groups (p > 0.05). Purpose: To assess subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) and choroidal vascularity index (CVI) profile in the Iranian healthy population and assessment of the inter-eye difference in this regard., Methods: In a cross-sectional study, 141 healthy subjects underwent an assessment of refraction and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), axial length (AL), and measurement of the intraocular pressure. The imaging of the choroid was performed using the enhanced-depth imaging mode of Spectralis optical coherence tomography from the foveal slab to measure SFCT and calculate CVI., Results: A total of 282 eyes of 141 healthy subjects (59.6% men, mean age of 60.86 ± 11.46 years) enrolled in the current study. The mean SFCT of the right and left eye was 247.40 ± 70.37 and 251.25 ± 72.19, respectively. The mean CVI of the right and left eye was 62.63 ± 3.77 and 63.19 ± 3.91, respectively. None of the measured parameters had statistically significant differences between the left and right eyes. In both univariate and multivariate regression analysis, CVI was significantly associated with BCVA ( P < 0.001) but was not associated with age, spherical equivalent (SE), gender, central macular thickness (CMT), and SFCT. In univariate regression analysis, SFCT was significantly associated with age, refraction ( P = 0.02), BCVA ( P = 0.003), AL ( P < 0.001), and CVI ( P = 0.02) but not significantly associated with gender and CMT. In multivariate analysis, age ( P < 0.001), gender ( P = 0.001), and AL ( P < 0.001) were significantly associated with SFCT, but SE, BCVA, CVI, and CMT were not significantly associated., Conclusions: This was the first investigation to assess the SFCT and CVI simultaneously in the Iranian population to establish a normative database for future studies. Complete slit-lamp assessment, swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) scans to measure SFCT and BCVA values were performed at two stages: baseline and one month after the third monthly injection of intravitreal bevacizumab.Results: Patients’ ages ranged from 46.3 to 76.4 years (mean: 62.6 ± 2.3). The mean SFCT was 318 ± 82 μm at baseline, which decreased after 3 months to 300 ± 66 μm (P-value = 0.021). There was an improvement in the mean of the logMAR best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) from 0.7 (decimal equivalent: 0.2) to 0.5 (decimal equivalent: 0.3) (P-value = 0.019). There was no association between SFCT changes and BCVA changes (P-value = 0.180). Wilcoxon signed-rank test disclosed that a better BCVA improvement was related to a greater subfoveal choroidal thickness at baseline P-value < 0.00.Conclusion: Eyes with a higher baseline subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) attained greater BCVA improvement than eyes with a lower baseline SFCT. In addition to this, changes to SFCT do not appear to correlate with BCVA changes. To assess morphological changes and visual results in eyes with pachychoroid neovasculopathy (PNV) that underwent different intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agents. This is a retrospective, observational, comparative study that included 76 PNV eyes in 76 patients that were allocated to three groups according to the monotherapy injection procedure, as follows: the intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) group, intravitreal ranibizumab (IVR) group, and intravitreal aflibercept (IVA) group. Central macular thickness (CMT), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) were measured at baseline, after treatment 1st month, 3rd month, 6th month, and 12th month, and at the final post-treatment examination. Mean age of the patients was 57.31 ± 5.91 years (range: 34–67 years). The mean duration of follow-up was 31.50 ± 12.91 months (range: 13–60 months). The IVB group included 30 eyes, the IVR group included 22 eyes, and the IVA group included 24 eyes. There weren't any significant differences in BCVA changes between the groups at any post-baseline measurement time point. Although CMT did not change significantly in the IVB group from baseline to the final follow-up visit (baseline: 376.33 ± 86.31 µm; final visit: 340.80 ± 122.70 µm) (p = 0.172), CMT did change significantly in the IVA group (baseline: 383.41 ± 131.83 µm; final visit: 297.33 ± 103.81 µm) (p = 0.029) and IVR group (baseline: 379.18 ± 97.93 µm; final visit: 335.72 ± 111.45 µm) (p = 0.041). SFCT decreased significantly in the IVR and IVA groups (p = 0.015 and p < 0.001, respectively). The mean number of injections was 12.06 ± 4.72 (range: 6–20) in the IVB group, 11.81 ± 3.31(range: 7–17) in the IVR group, and 7.16 ± 3.15 (range: 4–13) in the IVA group (p = 0.004). All three anti-VEGFs were effective in terms of visual results in patients with PNV. Patients treated with IVA required fewer injections than those treated with IVB or IVR.
