The aim of this research was to optimize the polysaccharides extraction process from the peels of Akebia trifoliate, and evaluate its in vitro antioxidant and hypoglycemic activity. The ultrasonic-assisted extraction process of polysaccharides from the peels of Akebia trifoliate was optimized using single-factor combined with orthogonal experiment. The antioxidant activity of polysaccharides from the peels of Akebia trifoliate was investigated by using DPPH radical scavenging rate and total reducing ability as the indicators. The hypoglycemic activity of polysaccharides from the peels of Akebia trifoliate was explored using α-glucosidase and α-amylase inhibition rate as the indicators. The results demonstrated that the optimal ultrasonic-assisted extraction process of polysaccharides from the peels of Akebia trifoliate was ultrasound power 280 W, ultrasound time 60 min, extraction temperature 50 ℃, solid-liquid ratio 1:40 g/mL, respectively. Under the optimal process condition, the extraction rate of polysaccharides from the peels of Akebia trifoliate was 5.91%±0.20%. Within the measured concentration range, polysaccharides from the peels of Akebia trifoliate had the preferable DPPH radical scavenging and reducing ability. In addition, the IC50 values of polysaccharides from the peels of Akebia trifoliate and VC for scavenging DPPH free radicals were 0.329 and 0.077 mg/mL, separately. The IC50 values of polysaccharides from the peels of Akebia trifoliate for inhibiting α-glucosidase and α-amylase activity were 0.386 and 0.307 mg/mL, respectively. This research proved that the polysaccharides from the peels of Akebia trifoliate extracted by this optimal process had better in vitro antioxidant and hypoglycemic activity.

Abstract Background Obesity affects approximately 800 million people worldwide and may contribute to various diseases, especially cardiovascular and cerebrovascular conditions. Fat distribution and content represent two related yet distinct axes determining the impact of adipose tissue on health. Unlike traditional fat measurement indices, which often overlook fat distribution, the Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI) is a novel metric used to assess visceral fat accumulation and associated health risks. Our objective is to evaluate its association with the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Methods A nationwide longitudinal study spanning 9 years was conducted to investigate both the effects of baseline CVAI levels (classified as low and high) and dynamic changes in CVAI over time, including maintenance of low CVAI, transition from low to high, transition from high to low, and maintenance of high CVAI. Continuous scales (restricted cubic spline curves) and categorical scales (Kaplan-Meier curves and multivariable Cox regression analyses) were utilized to evaluate the relationship between CVAI and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Furthermore, subgroup analyses were conducted to investigate potential variations. Results Totally 1761 individuals (22.82%) experienced primary outcomes among 7717 participants. In the fully adjusted model, for each standard deviation increase in CVAI, there was a significant increase in the risk of primary outcomes [1.20 (95%CI: 1.14–1.27)], particularly pronounced in the high CVAI group [1.38 (95%CI: 1.25–1.54)] compared to low CVAI group. Regarding transition patterns, individuals who consistently maintained high CVAI demonstrated the highest risk ratio compared to those who consistently maintained low CVAI [1.51 (95%CI: 1.31–1.74)], followed by individuals transitioning from low to high CVAI [1.22 (95% CI: 1.01–1.47)]. Analysis of restricted cubic spline curves indicated a positive dose-response relationship between CVAI and risk of primary outcomes (p for non-linear = 0.596). Subgroup analyses results suggest that middle-aged individuals with high CVAI face a notably greater risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in contrast to elderly individuals [1.75 (95% CI: 1.53–1.99)]. Conclusion This study validates a significant association between baseline levels of CVAI and its dynamic changes with the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Vigilant monitoring and effective management of CVAI significantly contribute to early prevention and risk stratification of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

BackgroundSelf-efficacy, a critical psychological construct representing an individual’s belief in their ability to control their motivation, behavior, and social environment. In adolescents, self-efficacy plays a crucial role in mental health, particularly concerning depressive symptoms. Despite substantial research, the complex interplay between self-efficacy and depressive symptoms in adolescents remains incompletely understood.AimsThe aim of this study is to investigate the complex interrelationships between self-efficacy and depressive symptoms in adolescents using psychological network analysis.MethodsThe cross-sectional study involved 3,654 adolescents. Self-efficacy was assessed using the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), and depressive symptoms were measured with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Network analysis, incorporating the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) technique and centrality analysis, constructed and compared self-efficacy networks between depressive symptoms and healthy control groups.ResultsOf the 3,654 participants, 560 (15.32%) met criteria for moderate to severe depressive symptoms (PHQ-9 scores ≥10). Among those with depressive symptoms, 373 (66.61%) had moderate, 126 (22.50%) had moderate–severe, and 61 (10.89%) had severe symptoms. Blast-related traumatic brain injury (bTBI) is a major cause of neurological disorders in the U.S. military that can adversely impact some civilian populations as well and can lead to lifelong deficits and diminished quality of life. Among these types of injuries, the long-term sequelae are poorly understood because of variability in intensity and number of the blast exposure, as well as the range of subsequent symptoms that can overlap with those resulting from other traumatic events (e.g., post-traumatic stress disorder). Despite the valuable insights that rodent models have provided, there is a growing interest in using injury models using species with neuroanatomical features that more closely resemble the human brain. With this purpose, we established a gyrencephalic model of blast injury in ferrets, which underwent blast exposure applying conditions that closely mimic those associated with primary blast injuries to warfighters. In this study, we evaluated brain biochemical, microstructural, and behavioral profiles after blast exposure using in vivo longitudinal magnetic resonance imaging, histology, and behavioral assessments. In ferrets subjected to blast, the following alterations were found: 1) heightened impulsivity in decision making associated with pre-frontal cortex/amygdalar axis dysfunction; 2) transiently increased glutamate levels that are consistent with earlier findings during subacute stages post-TBI and may be involved in concomitant behavioral deficits; 3) abnormally high brain N-acetylaspartate levels that potentially reveal disrupted lipid synthesis and/or energy metabolism; and 4) dysfunction of pre-frontal cortex/auditory cortex signaling cascades that may reflect similar perturbations underlying secondary psychiatric disorders observed in warfighters after blast exposure.

In this paper, the preparation of Selenized Gastrodia elata polysaccharides (SeGEP) was conducted through HNO3-Na2SeO3 method using GEP and sodium nitrite as the raw materials, and the modification conditions were optimized by single factor experiment combined with response surface method using selenium content as the index. Ultraviolet spectrum (UV), infrared spectrum (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), particle size test, zeta potential test, Congo red test, iodine-potassium iodide test, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) techniques were carried out to explore the structure of GEP and SeGEP. Antioxidant tests were conducted to evaluate the effect of selenylation modification on GEP in vitro. The results showed that the optimum selenylation parameters were as follows: Reaction temperature 74 ℃, nitric acid concentration 0.041%, reaction time 8.4 h, and under the optimum conditions, the selenium content could be reached to 3891.05±10.86 μg/g. Structural characterization analysis showed that SeGEP had been successfully accomplished, and SeGEP had reduced the particle size, increased the absolute value of Zeta potential and improved the stability in solution by comparing with GEP. It was also found that both GEP and SeGEP might possess triple helix with long side branched chain structures, whereas selenylation modification could change the micromorphology of GEP. The in vitro antioxidant results showed that the DPPH radical scavenging rate of SeGEP at 10 mg/mL was 98%±1.52% and the maximum iron reducing power was 0.99±0.24, and the ABTS+ radical scavenging rate of SeGEP at 1 mg/mL was 97.49%±1.16%, respectively. SeGEP exhibited higher antioxidant activities than that of GEP, indicating that selenylation modification could improve the antioxidant ability of GEP. This study provided a theoretical basis for the development of selenium supplement and functional food related to selenized Gastrodia elata polysaccharides.

Using the classical ensemble model, we investigate the effect of laser wavelength on the electron dynamics process of nonsequential double ionization (NSDI) for linear triatomic molecules driven by a counter-rotating two-color circularly polarized laser field. Based on the delay time between recollision and final double ionization, two particular ionization channels are separated: recollision-impact ionization (RII) and recollision-induced excitation with subsequent ionization (RESI). Numerical results show that with the increase of the laser wavelength, the triangle structure of the ion momentum distribution becomes more obvious, which indicates that the electron–electron correlation of NSDI is enhanced. In addition, we find that the ratio of the RESI channel gradually decreases with the increase of the laser wavelength, while the ratio of the RII channel is opposite. However, the dominant channel is still RESI. It means that the two ionization channels can be controlled effectively by changing the laser wavelength.

In this study, we used the Sanya Incoherent Scatter Radar (SYISR) to observe the altitude profiles of traveling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs) during a moderate magnetic storm from 13 to 15 March 2022. Three TIDs were recorded, including two large-scale TIDs (LSTIDs) and one medium-scale TID (MSTID). These LSTIDs occurred during the storm recovery phase, characterized by periods of ~110–155 min, downward phase velocities of 22–60 m/s, and a relative amplitude of 17–25%. A nearly vertical front was noted at ~350–550 km, differing from AGW theory predictions. This structure is more attributed to the combined effects of sunrise-induced electron density changes and pre-sunrise uplift. Moreover, GNSS observations linked this LSTID to high-latitude origins, indicating a connection to polar magnetic storm excitation. However, the second LSTID was observed at lower altitudes (150–360 km) with a higher elevation angle (~17°). This LSTID, observed by the SYISR, was absent in the GNSS data from mainland China and Japan, suggesting a potential local source. The MSTID exhibited a larger relative amplitude of 29–36% at lower altitudes (130–210 km) with severe upward attenuation. The MSTID may be related to atmospheric gravity waves from the lower atmosphere. AGWs are considered to be the perturbation source for this MSTID event.

Low-gluten flour, Roxburgh rose juice, butter, sucrose and egg were taken as the raw materials, the color, flavor and texture were taken as the indicators of sensory test, the optimal of formulation of Roxburgh rose cookies were investigated by the single factor experiments and response surface analysis. Results showed that, the optimal formulation of Roxburgh rose cookies was as followings: The amounts of low-gluten flour, Roxburgh rose juice, butter, sucrose and egg were 100%, 29.86%, 56.74%, 40.68% and 14.72%, respectively. The Roxburgh rose cookies, which was produced by the above optimal formulation, had the uniform color, special sour flavor of Roxburgh rose, moderate sweet. The Roxburgh rose cookies achieved 89.31 scores in the sensory test. The drying loss, protein content, total lipid content, peroxide value, acid value of Roxburgh rose cookies were 3.09%, 11.7 g/100 g, 26.2 g/100 g, 0.14 g/100 g, 1.4 mg/g, respectively. Filtrable Roxburgh rose juice and maltodextrin were selected as the raw materials and Roxburgh rose powder was prepared by the spray drying technology. The amount of vitamin C, flavone and polyphenol and sensory test score were taken as the indicators. The optimal spray drying processing of filtrable Roxburgh rose juice was investigated by the single factor experiment and response surface analysis. The single factor experiment demonstrated that the optimal application amount of maltodextrin was 15%. In addition, the optimal inlet air temperature and flow rate was 165 ℃ and 1.5 L/h, respectively. The response surface analysis proved that the optimal spray drying processing of filtrable Roxburgh rose juice was as followings: the amount of maltodextrin was 15%, the optimal inlet air temperature and flow rate were 160 ℃ and 1.5 L/h, separately. The Roxburgh rose powder, which was produced by the above optimal processing method and recipe, contained 6722.02 mg/100 g of vitamin C, 1904.02 mg/100 g of flavone, 8122.43 mg/100 g of polyphenol. Furthermore, the sensory test score of Roxburgh rose powder was 83.22. The Roxburgh rose powder had uniform texture and strong Roxburgh rose flavor. The Roxburgh rose powder made by the above method had lower cost, higher nutritive value and easier preparation method. And also, it could be suitable for the industrial production.

Roxburgh rose juice, lotus root starch and sucrose were taken as the raw materials, the taste, fragrance, color and texture were taken as the indicators of sensory test, the optimal processing and recipe of starchy roxburgh rose gel soft sweet were investigated by the single factor experiment and response surface analysis. The single factor experiment demonstrated that the optimal application amount of roxburgh rose juice, lotus root starch and sucrose were 44%, 26% and 20%, respectively. In addition, the optimal heating time was 20 min. The response surface analysis proved that the optimal recipe of starchy roxburgh rose gel soft sweet was as followings: The amount of roxburgh rose juice was 39%, the amount of lotus root starch was 22% and the amount of sucrose was 19.36%. Furthermore, the optimal heating time of starchy roxburgh rose gel soft sweet was 19.93 min. The starchy roxburgh rose gel soft sweet, which was produced by the above optimal processing method and recipe, had the moderate sweet and sour degrees and the special roxburgh rose and lotus root starch flavor, at the same time, the starchy roxburgh rose gel soft sweet had the high elasticity and low viscosity. The starchy roxburgh rose gel soft sweet achieved 91.3 scores in the sensory test. Compared with the National Food Safety Standards of China (GB 17399-2016) and Confectionery Gel Confectionery Domestic Trade Industry Standards of China (SB/T 10021-2017), the sensory characteristics, physicochemical indexes (drying loss and the amount of reducing sugars) and microbiological indicators (total number of bacterial colonies, colibacillus and pathogenic bacterias) of the product meet the requirements of the above standards.

Several backfilled full-scale burst tests were recently performed by TC Energy on CSA Z245.1 Grade 550 Category II pipe steels. This paper presents a new interpretation of the recent full scale burst test data using the crack tip opening angle (CTOA) as fracture propagation criterion. ASTM E3039 was used to determine the CTOA of the pipe steels used in the tests. Correlations of fracture velocity with CTOA and with Charpy absorbed energy CVN were compared. A finite element (FE) model with shell elements and a constant CTOA fracture criterion was implemented for the simulation of dynamic fracture propagation. The commercial FE code ABAQUS was used to generate the models and perform the analyses. The CTOAs determined from ASTM E3039 were used as input to the model and the fracture velocities found from the simulations were in good agreement with experimental values. The polyurethane foam coating used in the tests was incorporated in the model and shown to have a significant effect on the predicted fracture velocity. The fracture resistance curves (pressure vs. velocity) from the present model were compared with those proposed in the HLP-Sumitomo model and shown to be in approximate agreement.

Abstract With the popularisation of Android smartphones, the value of mobile application security research has increased. The emergence of adversarial technology makes it possible for malware to evade detection. Therefore, research is conducted on Android malicious applications of adversarial attack. To clarify the process and theory of adversarial sample generation, an adversarial sample generation algorithm is proposed that filters features based on feature spatial distribution and definition. These features are modified on real malicious samples to form adversarial samples. In addition, to enhance the robustness of adversarial sample classification detection, a multiple feature set detection algorithm is designed and implemented. Using the frequency differential enhancement feature selection algorithm to perform feature screening, the algorithm forms two different feature sets and establishes two different training sets to train different classification algorithms. Prediction results obtained by the two classification algorithms are integrated based on certain rules. Experimental results on the VirusShare dataset show that both algorithms are effective. The detection results in an actual environment also prove the effectiveness of the multiple feature set detection algorithm.

The diagnosis related group (DRG) was the most commonly used prospective hospital payment platform in developed countries. One of the major limitations of the DRG system is that the DRG grouping is not sufficiently homogeneous in benchmarking underlying resource needs. We developed a novel hospital payment and management system called Big Data Diagnosis & Intervention Packet (BD-DIP) by applying the similar case mix index (CMI) principles but the grouping is based on unique combination of ICD-10 and ICD-9 v3 codes. The initial prototype of BD-DIP was developed using hospital discharge records in Shanghai and then piloted in Guangzhou, China. The average coefficient of variation of the DB-DIP is about one-third smaller than the US DRG system. Results from the pilot evaluation showed that introduction of the BD-DIP lead to about 5% hospital budget savings and notable improvement in hospital care efficiency, including increased institutional CMI, lower admission rates, smaller variation in hospital charges, and lower patient cost-sharing burdens. The implementation of hospital monitoring tools resulted in identification of potential irregular practices to enable further auditing and investigation. The BD-DIP platform has a number of advantages over DRG-based payment models in terms of more homogeneous resource utilization within groups, design simplicity, dynamic in grouping, and reimbursement value in reflecting real-world treatment pathways and costs, and easy to implement.

In this paper, dynamic ductile fracture propagation simulations were conducted to study the use of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) for modeling the effects of backfill in pipeline burst simulations. The effect of SPH parameters on fracture velocity was studied using the Battelle Two-Curve Method (BTCM) approach of decoupling mechanics and gas decompression but characterizing propagation toughness by crack tip opening angle (CTOA) rather than Charpy absorbed energy (CVN). The backfilled pipe model was developed and studied using the commercial finite element code ABAQUS 2017. Ductile fracture propagation was simulated using a shell based constant CTOA model. The current study examined the numerical aspects of applying SPH through comparing results with literature. The effects of particle size, various backfill material properties, and backfill depth on the fracture velocity were examined. It was found that the particle size had a minor effect on the fracture velocity and should be selected in proportion to the diameter of the pipe being examined. The numerical study showed that increasing the density and shear modulus of the backfill material resulted in a reduction of the fracture velocity. The effect of backfill depth up to 1.4 m was also examined numerically and found to have little effect on the fracture velocity, agreeing well with literature. The present study illustrates the sensitivity of the fracture velocity to the various parameters used in SPH models.

A long experiment has been established since 2000 at CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center), Turrialba, Costa Rica. Twenty agro-forestry systems with different shade types and managements (organic and non-organic) consisting of an incomplete randomized block-design with shade tree as main effect and subplots represented by management were set up. The effects of different managements and shade types on the aroma and color generation of roasted coffee beans were investigated. The total protein content was significantly higher (P < 0.05) under the intensive conventional (IC) (168 g/Kg) and intensive organic (IO) (167 g/Kg) managements than under the moderate conventional (MC) (153 g/Kg in IC vs. MC group, 157 g/Kg in MC vs. IO group). Comparing with the moderate conventional (MC) management, the intensive organic (IO) management had a stronger ability to generate more flavor and color. The total protein content was significantly higher (P < 0.05) under the full sun system (172 g/Kg) than under the shaded (159 g/Kg) and Erythrina system (155 g/Kg), under the service system (165 g/Kg) than under the timber system (146 g/Kg), under the legume timber system (170 g/Kg) than under the non-legume timber system (152 g/Kg). The full sun system had a greater flavor generation and color after roasting. Comparing with the timber system, the service system produced roasted beans with the more flavor and color. Comparing with the non-legume shade tree, the legume shade tree improved the performance of flavor and color in the roasted coffee beans.

Cost and contamination are the bottleneck problems for the replacement of antibiotics with fermented feed. A strain of lactic acid bacteria was isolated and screened from acidified apple juice and identified as Pediococcus acidilactici using morphological, physiological, and biochemical tests and 16S rDNA sequence analysis. The strain was combined with Bacillus subtilis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae to ferment raw corn–soybean meal, and the two-stage fermentation process was optimized with a single-factor test, orthogonal test, and response surface methodology. Compared with unfermented raw material, the protein content of fermented feed was increased by 5.21 percentage points (p < 0.05) and the total amino acids were increased by 3.7 percentage points (p < 0.05), making it rich in amino acids essential for pigs. The high-throughput sequencing results showed that, at the species level, the highest relative abundances of bacteria in the fermentation system were those of Pediococcus acidilactici and Bacillus subtilis, and the most abundant fungi was Saccharomyces cerevisiae. No pathogenic bacteria, such as Salmonella, were detected in the fermentation system. This paper provides a feasible scheme for cheap preparation of an alternative to antibiotics, fermented feed, with uncooked raw materials. It has positive significance for promoting high-value utilization of agricultural and sideline products and improving feed cost-effectiveness.

In this study, the fungus Penicillium sp. was isolated from rotting postharvest blueberry fruits at different storage stages and identified into genera. Inoculation of this strain on the surface of fresh fruits was able to cause rotting. The strain was then used as a reference strain to test the chemical control effect of ozone fumigation during storage. The results showed that ozone fumigation had an obvious inhibitory effect on Penicillium sp. in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Meanwhile, ozone fumigation treatment could prevent the loss of fruit firmness, slow down the decrease of soluble solids, total phenolics, and anthocyanins, and maintain a lower activity of PPO and higher activities of POD and CAT. As far as we know, this is the first report on the effects of ozone fumigation on the postharvest pathogenic fungi Penicillium sp. and on the storage quality of postharvest blueberry collected from Majiang County, Guizhou province, China.

The radar constant calibration in incoherent scatter radar ion line processing is essential for the data quality and was not paid enough attention in previous studies. In this investigation, based on several experiments made by the newly built Sanya incoherent scatter radar (SYISR), we made and evaluated the ion line calibration by plasma line both in case study and statistically. The calibration factor had local time and altitude variations, due to the corresponding variations of the transmitted power, the radar gain, and the noise temperature. We obtained a mean calibration factor of 1.35 by the simultaneous measured plasma line and ion line electron density and applied it to a one-month ion line observation calibration. Through a co-located ionosonde measured foF2 evaluation, the calibration decreased the mean deviation from −1.92 MHz (−18%) to −0.33 MHz (−3%), which resulted in much better agreement between the ion line foF2 after calibration and the ionosonde results. The existed deviations between after calibration and ionosonde results were due to the uncertainties either in the used calibration factor or the ionosonde measurements. An empirical Te/Ti usage in raw electron density estimation and ignoring the seasonal and short-term variations of the effecting factors might influence the calibration performance. Using the to-be-completed SYISR Tristatic System, the performance of plasma line calibration technique is expected to be improved in the future.

Trichodermin, a trichothecene first isolated in Trichoderma species, is a sesquiterpenoid antibiotic that exhibits significant inhibitory activity to the growth of many pathogenic fungi such as Candida albicans, Rhizoctonia solani, and Botrytis cinerea by inhibiting the peptidyl transferase involved in eukaryotic protein synthesis. Trichodermin has also been shown to selectively induce cell apoptosis in several cancer cell lines and thus can act as a potential lead compound for developing anticancer therapeutics. The biosynthetic pathway of trichodermin in Trichoderma has been identified, and most of the involved genes have been functionally characterized. An exception is TRI3, which encodes a putative acetyltransferase. Here, we report the identification of a gene cluster that contains seven genes expectedly involved in trichodermin biosynthesis (TRI3, TRI4, TRI6, TRI10, TRI11, TRI12, and TRI14) in the trichodermin-producing endophytic fungus Trichoderma taxi. As in Trichoderma brevicompactum, TRI5 is not included in the cluster. Functional analysis provides evidence that TRI3 acetylates trichodermol, the immediate precursor, to trichodermin. Disruption of TRI3 gene eliminated the inhibition to R. solani by T. taxi culture filtrates and significantly reduced the production of trichodermin but not of trichodermol. Both the inhibitory activity and the trichodermin production were restored when native TRI3 gene was reintroduced into the disruption mutant. Furthermore, a His-tag-purified TRI3 protein, expressed in Escherichia coli, was able to convert trichodermol to trichodermin in the presence of acetyl-CoA. The disruption of TRI3 also resulted in lowered expression of both the upstream biosynthesis TRI genes and the regulator genes. Our data demonstrate that T. taxi TRI3 encodes an acetyltransferase that catalyzes the esterification of the C-4 oxygen atom on trichodermol and thus plays an essential role in trichodermin biosynthesis in this fungus.

Based on China’s potato staple food policy, we chose potatoes as a study case to analyze the following indicators—the virtual new nitrogen factor (VNNF), the virtual new phosphorus factor (VNPF), the virtual irrigation-water (IW) factor (VIWF), the virtual total water (IW + precipitation) factor (VTWF), and the virtual greenhouse gas (GHG) emission factor (VCF) of the potatoes consumed by households in the six potato cultivation regions—by reviewing 220 publications from 2000 to 2020. The results showed that the VNNF ranged between 17.8 ± 7.8 and 30.1 ± 17.0 kg N kg−1 N in the consumed potato, the VNPF ranged between 8.4 ± 5.0 and 18.8 ± 11.3 kg P kg−1 P in the consumed potato, the VIWF ranged between 0.3 ± 1.0 and 1.8 ± 1.4 m3 IW kg−1 for the consumed standard yield (except in the three mainly rainfed potato regions), the VTWF ranged between 4.8 ± 2.2 and 9.3 ± 3.7 m3 total water kg−1 for the consumed standard yield, and the VCF ranged between 3.4 ± 1.5 and 5.9 ± 2.4 kg CO2 equivalent kg−1 for the consumed standard yield, under the conventional practice in the six potato cultivation regions. The normalization score results indicate that the northeast, northwest, southwest, and south of China are relatively more suitable regions in which to plant potatoes, based on the VNNF, VNPF, VIWF or VTWF, and VCF indicators.

The incidence of hospital-acquired infections caused by Chryseobacterium indologenes (C. indologenes) is increasing. This study investigated the epidemiological and clinical features of C. indologenes intra-abdominal infections in patients who underwent orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). In this retrospective study, 53 consecutive non-replicate clinical isolates of C. indologenes were collected and identified from the OLT patients at a tertiary care university hospital in Shanghai in 2017. Genetic relatedness of the isolates was determined by enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus polymerase chain reaction DNA fingerprinting. Antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates was measured using the microdilution broth method. Nosocomial clonal transmission of C. indologenes was confirmed by bacterial homology analysis. All C. indologenes isolates were resistant to β-lactams, carbapenems, quinolones, and aminoglycosides, and showed susceptibility to trimethoprim–sulfamethoxazole and minocycline. Multivariate risk modelling revealed that ≥2 bed transfers and an operation time of ≥8 h were independent risk factors for C. indologenes intra-abdominal infection after OLT. A nomogram was constructed based on the screened risk factors, which showed good concordance and accuracy. Clonal dissemination of C. indologenes in OLT patients was demonstrated and several risk factors for intra-abdominal infections were identified. Epidemiological surveillance of this organism and extensive surveillance programs are imperative worldwide.

Seventeen novel N-phenylbenzamide derivatives bearing a trifluoromethylpyrimidine moiety were synthesized via four-step reactions. Their antifungal and insecticidal properties were evaluated. Antifungal test results demonstrated that some of the synthesized compounds showed better in vitro bioactivities against Phomopsis sp., Botryosphaeria dothidea (B. dothidea), and Botrytis cinerea (B. cinerea) at 50 μg/mL than pyrimethanil. Unfortunately, the synthesized compounds revealed lower insecticidal activities against Spodoptera frugiperda (S. frugiperda) and Mythimna separata (M. separata) at 500 μg/mL than chlorantraniliprole.

Lactobacillus reuteri YSJL-12 was isolated from healthy sow fresh feces and used as probiotics additives previously. To investigate the genetic basis on probiotic potential and identify the genes in the strain, the complete genome of YSJL-12 was sequenced. Then comparative genome analysis on 9 strains of Lactobacillus reuteri was performed. The genome of YSJL-12 consisted of a circular 2,084,748 bp chromosome and 2 circular plasmids (51,906 and 15,134 bp). From among the 2065 protein-coding sequences (CDSs), the genes resistant to the environmental stress were identified. The function of COG (Clusters of Orthologous Group) protein genes was predicted, and the KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) pathways were analyzed. The comparative genome analysis indicated that the pan-genome contained a core genome of 1257 orthologous gene clusters, an accessory genome of 1064 orthologous gene clusters, and 1148 strain-specific genes, and the antibacterial mechanism among Lactobacillus reuteri strains might be different. The phylogenetic analysis and genomic collinearity revealed that the phylogenetic relationship among 9 strains of Lactobacillus reuteri was connected with host species and showed host specificity. The research could help us to better predict genes function and understand genetic basis on adapting to host gut in Lactobacillus reuteri YSJL-12.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked disorder caused by the lack of dystrophin with progressive degeneration of skeletal muscles. Most studies regarding DMD understandably focus on muscle, but dystrophin is also expressed in the central nervous system, potentially resulting in cognitive and behavioral changes. Animal models are being used for developing more comprehensive neuromonitoring protocols and clinical image acquisition procedures. The recently developed DMD rat is an animal model that parallels the progressive muscle wasting seen in DMD. Here, we studied the brain and temporalis muscle structure and neurochemistry of wild type (WT) and dystrophic (DMD) rats using magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy. Both structural and neurochemistry alterations were observed in the DMD rat brain and the temporalis muscle. There was a decrease in absolute brain volume (WT = 1579 mm3; DMD = 1501 mm3; p = 0.039, Cohen’s d = 1.867), but not normalized (WT = 4.27; DMD = 4.02; p = 0.306) brain volume. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) revealed structural alterations in the DMD temporalis muscle, with increased mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD), and radial diffusivity (RD). In the DMD rat thalamus, DTI revealed an increase in fractional anisotropy (FA) and a decrease in RD. Smaller normalized brain volume correlated to severity of muscle dystrophy (r = −0.975). Neurochemical changes in the DMD rat brain included increased GABA and NAA in the prefrontal cortex, and GABA in the hippocampus. Such findings could indicate disturbed motor and sensory signaling, resulting in a dysfunctional GABAergic neurotransmission, and an unstable osmoregulation in the dystrophin-null brain.

Antibiotics have been described to modulate bacterial virulence gene expression. This study aimed to assess the changes caused by anti-Staphylococcus agents in the transcription of leucocidin ED (lukED) gene of Staphylococcus aureus strain Newman in vitro and in vivo and to determine whether the altered expression is agr dependent. The bacteria were exposed to subinhibitory concentrations [1/2, 1/4, or 1/8 minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC)] of 11 antibiotics, and the expression of lukE and agr-effector RNAIII was determined using qRT-PCR. In vivo experiments were performed to evaluate the impact exerted by six representative antibiotics on the transcription of both genes. Molecular analysis showed that in vitro lukE transcription was dramatically promoted in the Newman strain exposed to sub-MICs of vancomycin, trimethoprim–sulfamethoxazole, clindamycin, gentamicin, daptomycin, and ciprofloxacin and considerably reduced when stimulated by cefazolin, erythromycin, rifampicin, tigecycline, and linezolid. In the murine abscess model, tigecycline significantly decreased the transcription of lukE and the bacterial numbers, whereas vancomycin increased them; although cefazolin increased the lukE expression (contrary to the in vitro effect), it had a remarkable role in reducing bacterial load. The correspondence analysis shows that RNAIII expression varied under seven of 11 antibiotics in vitro, and six drugs in vivo were consistent with lukE transcripts. In conclusion, our data show that anti-Staphylococcus antibiotics exert modulatory effects on lukE expression in vitro and/or in vivo, and the changed expression caused by some drugs may be involved with agr activity, thus providing a guide to choose appropriate agents to avoid promoting bacterial virulence in lukED-positive S. aureus infections.

Abstract Metamaterials/metasurfaces, which have subwavelength resonating unit cells (i.e., meta‐atoms), can enable unprecedented control over the flow of light. Despite their significant progress, achieving dynamical control of both energy and momentum of light remains a challenge. Here, a mechanically tunable metawall capable of either absorbing light energy or modulating light momentum, by incorporating the magnetic meta‐atoms into a 3D printed origami grating, is theoretically designed and experimentally realized. Through mechanical stretching or compressing of the Miura‐ori pattern, the function of metawall can transit from an absorber, a mirror, to a negative reflector. Particularly, the continuously geometric deformation of the Miura‐ori lattice is a promising approach to compensate the angular dispersion in gradient metasurfaces. Considering the prominent mechanical properties and strong deformation abilities of origami structures, the findings may open an alternative avenue toward lightweight and deployable metadevices with diversified and continuously alterable electromagnetic properties.

Abstract Background The bicomponent leukotoxins and the pyrogenic toxin superantigens (PTSAgs) are important virulence factors of Staphylococcus aureus. It is necessary to survey the prevalence and expression of these toxin-encoding genes for understanding the possible pathogenic capacity of S. aureus to cause disease. Methods Five leukotoxin genes and thirteen PTSAg determinants were detected for 177 S. aureus isolates from blood (n = 88) and wound (n = 89) infections by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). The expression of leukotoxin ED (lukED) was determined by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). The genetic backgrounds of isolates were analyzed by Staphylococcal Cassette Chromosome mec (SCCmec) typing (for methicillin-resistant S. aureus isolates), Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE), accessory gene regulator (agr) typing and Multilocus Sequence Typing (MLST, for representative isolates based on PFGE type) methods. Results 99.4% (176/177) isolates contained at least one of leukotoxin genes. Among them, 94.9% (168/177), 81.4% (144/177) and 67.8% (120/177) isolates harbored hlgBC, lukED and lukAB, respectively. Shift of phytoplankton niches from low to high latitudes has altered their experienced light exposure durations and temperatures. To explore this interactive effect, the growth, physiology, and cell compositions of smaller Alexandrium minutum and larger A. catenella, globally distributed toxic red tide dinoflagellates, were studied under a matrix of photoperiods (light:dark cycles of 8:16, 16:8, and 24:0) and temperatures (18 °C, 22 °C, 25 °C, and 28 °C). Under continuous growth light condition (L:D 24:0), the growth rate (µ) of small A. minutum increased from low to medium temperature, then decreased to high temperature, while the µ of large A. catenella continuously decreased with increasing temperatures. Shortened photoperiods reduced the µ of A. minutum, but enhanced that of A. catenella. As temperature increased, cellular Chl a content increased in both A. minutum and A. catenella, while the temperature-induced effect on RubisCO content was limited. Shortened photoperiods enhanced the Chl a but reduced RubisCO contents across temperatures. Moreover, shortened photoperiods enhanced photosynthetic capacities of both A. minutum and A. catenella, i.e., promoting the PSII photochemical quantum yield (FV/FM, ΦPSII), saturation irradiance (EK), and maximum relative electron transfer rate (rETRmax). Shortened photoperiods also enhanced dark respiration of A. minutum across temperatures, but reduced that of A. catenella, as well as the antioxidant activities of both species. Overall, A. minutum and A. catenella showed differential growth responses to photoperiods across temperatures, probably with cell size.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the efficacy of early lung cancer screening with low-dose spiral computed tomography(LDCT) in both smokers and nonsmokers based on the current situation of community health service, with integration of superior resources of medical institutions at all levels in Shanghai. METHODS: From August 2013 to August 2014, we screened 11,332 (male 7144; female 4188) high-risk individuals in selected communities of Minhang, Shanghai City, for early diagnosis of lung cancer with LDCT combined with multidisciplinary comprehensive treatment pattern including minimally invasive surgery, exploring the medical service network covering prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and follow-up. RESULTS: Screening resulted in a diagnosis of cancer in 29 participants. Of these participants, 27 had primary lung cancer, 1 had lung metastatic cancer, and 1 had breast cancer. The detection rate of primary lung cancer was 238.26 cases per 100,000 person-years among all the participants. Specifically, the incidence of primary lung cancer was 336.97 cases per 100,000 person-years among the nonsmoking participants, as compared with 159.06 cases per 100,000 person-years among the smoking participants (P = .054). Among the 27 primary lung cancers, 22 (81.48%) had stage 0 to I lung cancer. CONCLUSION: Based on community health service, screening with LDCT could improve the early diagnosis rate of lung cancer in both smokers and nonsmokers with feasibility and validity, which could be applicable in qualified eligible medical centers and communities in China. It is not reasonable to exclude nonsmokers from screening with LDCT.

The toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1), encoded by tst gene, has been proposed to cause staphylococcal toxic shock syndrome (TSS) in a susceptible host, which highlights the need to evaluate the level of tst gene expression and molecular genetic characteristics of the tst-positive isolates. A total of 916 S. aureus isolates collected from seven hospitals in China were screened for the tst gene. The tst positive isolates were characterized by spa, SCCmec, PFGE, and agr typing. Representative strains were also subjected to MLST typing. qRT-PCR was used to quantify tst and major virulence regulator genes expression. We also sequenced the regions of promoter and open reading frame (ORF) of tst to investigate whether they correlate with the variation in tst expression. We found 208 (22.7%) of surveyed isolates including 198 (29.8%) of MRSA and 10 (4.0%) of MSSA isolates harbored the tst gene. The most common clone among tst positive MRSA isolates belonged to ST5 (CC5)-agr2-t002-SCCmecII. The amount of tst mRNA varied 8.4-folds among clinical S. aureus isolates. Sequencing the tst promoter revealed a base T deletion in tst high expressed isolates. As for major virulence regulators, srrA, sarT, RNAIII, and ccpA in four tst differentially expressed strains were detected to be highly expressed, respectively. Our study revealed high prevalence of ST5 (CC5)-agr2-t002-SCCmecII clone among tst positive MRSA in hospitals from China. The levels of tst expression among clinical S. aureus isolates varied, which may be associated with tst promoter and variations in specific virulence regulators.

MET , the gene encoding the tyrosine kinase receptor for hepatocyte growth factor, is a susceptibility gene for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Genetically altered mice with a kinase-inactive Met offer a potential model for understanding neural circuit organization changes in autism. Here, we focus on the somatosensory thalamocortical circuitry because distinct somatosensory sensitivity phenotypes accompany ASD, and this system plays a major role in sensorimotor and social behaviors in mice. We employed resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and in vivo high-resolution proton MR spectroscopy to examine neuronal connectivity and neurotransmission of wild-type, heterozygous Met–Emx1 , and fully inactive homozygous Met–Emx1 mice. Met–Emx1 brains showed impaired maturation of large-scale somatosensory network connectivity when compared with wild-type controls. Significant sex × genotype interaction in both network features and glutamate/gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) balance was observed. Female Met–Emx1 brains showed significant connectivity and glutamate/GABA balance changes in the somatosensory thalamocortical system when compared with wild-type brains. The glutamate/GABA ratio in the thalamus was correlated with the connectivity between the somatosensory cortex and the thalamus in heterozygous Met–Emx1 female brains. The findings support the hypothesis that aberrant functioning of the somatosensory thalamocortical system is at the core of the conspicuous somatosensory behavioral phenotypes observed in Met–Emx1 mice.

Moving electrons interacting with media can give rise to electromagnetic radiations and has been emerged as a promising platform for particle detection, spectroscopies, and free-electron lasers. In this letter, we investigate the Smith-Purcell radiation from helical metagratings, chiral structures similar to deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), in order to understand the interplay between electrons, photons, and object chirality. Spiral field patterns can be generated while introducing a gradient azimuthal phase distribution to the induced electric dipole array at the cylindrical interface. Experimental measurements show efficient control over angular momentum of the radiated field at microwave regime, utilizing a phased electromagnetic dipole array to mimic moving charged particles. The angular momentum of the radiated wave is determined solely by the handedness of the helical structure, and it thus serves as a potential candidate for the detection of chiral objects. Our findings not only pave a way for design of orbital angular momentum free-electron lasers but also provide a platform to study the interplay between swift electrons with chiral objects.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is the leading known cause of intellectual disability, and may manifest as deficits in cognitive function, including working memory. Working memory capacity and accuracy increases during adolescence when neurons in the prefrontal cortex undergo refinement. Rats exposed to low doses of ethanol prenatally show deficits in working memory during adolescence, and in cognitive flexibility in young adulthood. The cholinergic system plays a crucial role in learning and memory processes. Here we report that the combination of choline and training on a working memory task during adolescence significantly improved cognitive flexibility (performance on an attentional set shifting task) in young adulthood: 92% of all females and 81% of control males formed an attentional set, but only 36% of ethanol-exposed males did. Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging showed that functional connectivity among brain regions was different between the sexes, and was altered by prenatal ethanol exposure and by choline + training. Connectivity, particularly between prefrontal cortex and striatum, was also different in males that formed a set compared with those that did not. Together, these findings indicate that prenatal exposure to low doses of ethanol has persistent effects on brain functional connectivity and behavior, that these effects are sex-dependent, and that an adolescent intervention could mitigate some of the effects of prenatal ethanol exposure.

This study used in vivo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to identify age dependent brain structural characteristics in Dunkin Hartley guinea pigs. Anatomical T2-weighted images, diffusion kurtosis (DKI) imaging, and T2 relaxometry measures were acquired from a cohort of male guinea pigs from postnatal day (PND) 18–25 (juvenile) to PND 46–51 (adolescent) and PND 118–123 (young adult). Whole-brain diffusion measures revealed the distinct effects of maturation on the microstructural complexity of the male guinea pig brain. Specifically, fractional anisotropy (FA), as well as mean, axial, and radial kurtosis in the corpus callosum, amygdala, dorsal-ventral striatum, and thalamus significantly increased from PND 18–25 to PND 118–123. Age-related alterations in DKI measures within these brain regions paralleled the overall alterations observed in the whole brain. Age-related changes in FA and kurtosis in the gray matter-dominant parietal cerebral cortex and dorsal hippocampus were less pronounced than in the other brain regions. The regional data analysis revealed that between-age changes of diffusion kurtosis metrics were more pronounced than those observed in diffusion tensor metrics. The age-related anatomical differences reported here may be important determinants of the age-dependent neurobehavior of guinea pigs in different tasks.

Diabetes predisposes to cognitive decline leading to dementia and is associated with decreased brain NAD+ levels. This has triggered an intense interest in boosting nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) levels to prevent dementia. We tested if the administration of the precursor of NAD+, nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN), can prevent diabetes-induced memory deficits. Diabetes was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats by the administration of streptozotocin (STZ). After 3 months of diabetes, hippocampal NAD+ levels were decreased (p = 0.011). In vivo localized high-resolution proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) of the hippocampus showed an increase in the levels of glucose (p < 0.001), glutamate (p < 0.001), gamma aminobutyric acid (p = 0.018), myo-inositol (p = 0.018), and taurine (p < 0.001) and decreased levels of N-acetyl aspartate (p = 0.002) and glutathione (p < 0.001). There was a significant decrease in hippocampal CA1 neuronal volume (p < 0.001) and neuronal number (p < 0.001) in the Diabetic rats. Diabetic rats showed hippocampal related memory deficits. Intraperitoneal NMN (100 mg/kg) was given after induction and confirmation of diabetes and was provided on alternate days for 3 months. NMN increased brain NAD+ levels, normalized the levels of glutamate, taurine, N-acetyl aspartate (NAA), and glutathione. NMN-treatment prevented the loss of CA1 neurons and rescued the memory deficits despite having no significant effect on hyperglycemic or lipidemic control. In hippocampal protein extracts from Diabetic rats, SIRT1 and PGC-1α protein levels were decreased, and acetylation of proteins increased. NMN treatment prevented the diabetes-induced decrease in both SIRT1 and PGC-1α and promoted deacetylation of proteins. Our results indicate that NMN increased brain NAD+, activated the SIRT1 pathway, preserved mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) function, prevented neuronal loss, and preserved cognition in Diabetic rats.

Minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) is highly prevalent, observed in up to 80% of patients with liver dysfunction. Minimal hepatic encephalopathy is defined as hepatic encephalopathy with cognitive deficits and no grossly evident neurologic abnormalities. Clinical management may be delayed due to the lack of in vivo quantitative methods needed to reveal changes in brain neurobiochemical biomarkers. To gain insight into the development of alcoholic liver disease–induced neurological dysfunction (NDF), a mouse model of late-stage alcoholic liver fibrosis (LALF) was used to investigate changes in neurochemical levels in the thalamus and hippocampus that relate to behavioral changes. Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the brain and behavioral testing were performed to determine neurochemical alterations and their relationships to behavioral changes in LALF. Glutamine levels were higher in both the thalamus and hippocampus of alcohol-treated mice than in controls. Thalamic levels of taurine and creatine were significantly diminished and strongly correlated with alcohol-induced behavioral changes.
