Research has been conducted on the 3-amino-3-deoxy-aldopentoses. The synthesis of these selectively blocked compounds has been carried out and the synthesis strategy based on the pyridinium salt photocyclization-aziridine ring-opening sequence used in preparation of the aminocyclopentendiol derivatives is described.

Photophysical investigations provide evidence of the existence of ylide intermediates in the silyl-transfer and decarboxylation photoreactions and furnish data on the dynamics of a variety of ylide decay pathways. Results reveal that azomethine ylides are the key reactive intermediates in novel excited-state processes. They also elucidate the nature of the excited states responsible for the ylide-forming silyl-migration and decarboxylation reactions.

Ion radicals are intermediates in several ground-state and excited-state redox reactions. A single electron transfer (SET) process has been used to look at the relevance of ion radical reaction dynamics. It is concluded that Beta-hydroxyanilinium radicals are less reactive than their analogues, and observations demonstrated that cation radicals derived from tertiary diamines occur as through-space three-electron N-N bonded structures.

A study was conducted on the dynamics of alpha-anilino carboxylate and related cation radical alpha-heterolytic fragmentations. The findings suggest that aminium radicals generated from alpha-aminocarboxylate undergo fast decarboxylation to form alpha-amino radicals. Moreover, changes in solvent, counter cation, and N- and alpha-substituents can alter decarboxylation rates, deprotonation, desilylation and retro-aldol cleavage.
