4. A New Interpretation of Three-Dimensional Particle Geometry: M-A-V-L

Abstract

This study provides a new interpretation of 3D particle geometry that unravels the 'interrelation' of the four geometry parameters, i.e., morphology M, surface area A, volume V, and size L, for which a new formula, M = A/V$\times$L/6, is introduced to translate the 3D particle morphology as a function of surface area, volume, and size. The A/V$\times$L of a sphere is invariably 6, which is placed in the denominator of the formula, and therefore M indicates a relative morphological irregularity compared to the sphere. The minimum possible value of M is clearly one, and M may range approximately to three for coarse-grained mineral particles. Furthermore, the proposed formula, M = A/V$\times$L/6, enables to graphically preserve the four parameters' relations when plotting the geometry parameter distributions. This study demonstrates the approach with two plot spaces that represent (i) L vs. M and (ii) A/V vs. V, where A/V works as the messenger between these two spaces as A/V = M/L$\times$6. Therefore, this approach helps comprehensively address the four-dimensional aspects of the 3D particle geometry and better understand the parameters' combined influence on the mechanical behavior of granular materials. 6. Lycopene exerts cytotoxic effects by mitochondrial reactive oxygen species–induced apoptosis in glioblastoma multiforme.

Abstract

Background: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) faces challenges with standard treatments, prompting exploration into alternative approaches. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are implicated in cancer development, making antioxidants from natural sources, such as lycopene in tomatoes, promising candidates. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of lycopene in GBM. Materials and Methods: The PAMPA-BBB assay predicted lycopene penetration. After treating GBM8401 and T98G GBM cells with lycopene, flow cytometry assessed cell cycle and apoptosis, while the CCK-8 assay measured antiproliferative efficacy. Colony formation assay examined cell growth, and intracellular and mitochondrial ROS levels were quantified. Western blot analyzed protein levels of p-ERK/ERK, p53, and cyclin-related proteins. Results: Our results demonstrated lycopene penetration across the blood-brain barrier and its induction of apoptosis, inhibiting proliferation in GBM8401 and T98G GBM cells. In addition, lycopene promoted p53 upregulation and suppressed cyclins B and cyclin D, leading to cell cycle arrest through ROS-activated ERK pathways. Conclusions: In conclusion, our study focused on lycopene's potential in GBM treatment, revealing its ability to induce apoptosis, inhibit proliferation, and regulate the cell cycle through ROS-activated ERK pathways. These findings suggest lycopene as a promising candidate for preventing and treating GBM by targeting ROS-induced cell proliferation, paving the way for future research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

7. An Analysis of Emergency Surgical Outcomes for Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury: A Ten-Year Single-Institute Retrospective Study in Taiwan.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Pediatric traumatic brain injury (pTBI) remains a major pediatric public health problem, despite well-developed injury prevention programs. The purpose of this study is to analyze the emergency surgical outcomes of pTBI in a single institute ten-year retrospective study to offer a real-world clinical result. Materials and Methods: Our institute presented a clinical retrospective, single-institute research study of 150 pediatric TBI cases that were diagnosed and underwent emergency surgical treatment from 2010 to 2019. Results: The incidence of radiological findings is detailed as follows: brain edema (30%, 45/150), followed by acute subdural hematoma (27.3%, 41/150), epidural hematoma (21.3%, 32/150), chronic subdural hemorrhage (10%, 15/150), skull fracture (6.7%, 10/150), and traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage (4.7%, 7/150). Surgical intervention data revealed that decompressive craniectomy was still the main effective surgical method. The results showed longer hospital stays and higher morbidity rates in the brain edema, acute subdural hematoma, and chronic subdural hemorrhage groups, which were viewed as poor surgical outcome groups. Epidural hematoma, skull fracture and traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage were categorized into good surgical outcome groups. Notably, the data revealed gross improvement in Glasgow Coma Scale/Score (GCS) evolution after surgical interventions, and the time to cranioplasty was a significant factor in the development of post-traumatic hydrocephalus (PTH). Conclusions: Our study provided real-world data for the distribution of etiology in pTBI and also categorized it into six groups, indicating disease-orientated treatment. In addition, our data supported that decompressive craniectomy (DC) remains a mainstay surgical treatment in pTBI and early cranioplasty could decrease the incidence of PTH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A total of consecutive 150 cases received robotic assisted spinal surgery. The 150 cases, with 841 transpedicular screws were enrolled into 3 groups: the first 50 cases performed by neurosurgeons, the first 50 cases by orthopedic surgeons, and 50 cases by neurosurgeons after the orthopedic surgeons joined the team. The time per screw and accuracy by each group and individual surgeon were analyzed.Results: The time per screw for each group was 9.56 ± 4.19, 7.29 ± 3.64, and 8.74 ± 5.77 minutes, respectively, with p-value 0.0017.
