We propose a novel deep learning approach to nonparametric statistical inference for the conditional hazard function of survival time with right-censored data. We use a deep neural network (DNN) to approximate the logarithm of a conditional hazard function given covariates and obtain a DNN likelihood-based estimator of the conditional hazard function. Such an estimation approach renders model flexibility and hence relaxes structural and functional assumptions on conditional hazard or survival functions. We establish the nonasymptotic error bound and functional asymptotic normality of the proposed estimator. Subsequently, we develop new one-sample tests for goodness-of-fit evaluation and two-sample tests for treatment comparison. Both simulation studies and real application analysis show superior performances of the proposed estimators and tests in comparison with existing methods.

In this paper we present the results of the AI-Debater 2023 Challenge held by the Chinese Conference on Affect Computing (CCAC 2023), and introduce the related datasets. We organize two tracks to handle the argumentative generation tasks in different scenarios, namely, Counter-Argument Generation (Track 1) and Claim-based Argument Generation (Track 2). Each track is equipped with its distinct dataset and baseline model respectively. In total, 32 competing teams register for the challenge, from which we received 11 successful submissions. In this paper, we will present the results of the challenge and a summary of the systems, highlighting commonalities and innovations among participating systems. Datasets and baseline models of the AI-Debater 2023 Challenge have been already released and can be accessed through the official website of the challenge.

In principle, the probability of configurations, determined by the system's partition function or wave function, encapsulates essential information about phases and phase transitions. Despite the exponentially large configuration space, we show that the generic correlation of distances between configurations, with a degree of freedom proportional to the lattice size, can probe phase transitions using importance sampling procedures like Monte Carlo simulations. The distribution of sampled distances varies significantly across different phases, suggesting universal critical behavior for uncertainty and participation entropy. For various classical spin models with different phases and transitions, finite-size analysis based on these quantities accurately identifies phase transitions and critical points. Notably, in all cases, the critical exponent derived from the uncertainty of distances equals the anomalous dimension governing real-space correlation decay. Thus, configuration space correlations, defined by distance uncertainties, share the same decay ratio as real-space correlations, determining the universality class of phase transitions. This work applies to diverse lattice models with different local degrees of freedom, e.g., two levels for Ising-like models, discrete multi-levels for q-state clock models, and continuous local levels for the XY model, offering a robust, alternative method for understanding complex phases and transitions., Comment: 17 figures, 15 pages

This paper concerns the long time existence to the smooth solutions of the compressible Euler system with critical time dependent damping in $\R^2$. We establish the sharp lifespan estimate from below, with respect to the small parameter of the initial perturbation. For this end, the vector fields $\widehat{Z}$ (defined below) are used instead of the usual one $Z$, to get better decay for the linear error terms. This idea may also apply to the long time behavior study of nonlinear wave equations with time-dependent damping.

We propose a functional accelerated failure time model to characterize effects of both functional and scalar covariates on the time to event of interest, and provide regularity conditions to guarantee model identifiability. For efficient estimation of model parameters, we develop a sieve maximum likelihood approach where parametric and nonparametric coefficients are bundled with an unknown baseline hazard function in the likelihood function. Not only do the bundled parameters cause immense numerical difficulties, but they also result in new challenges in theoretical development. By developing a general theoretical framework, we overcome the challenges arising from the bundled parameters and derive the convergence rate of the proposed estimator. Furthermore, we prove that the finite-dimensional estimator is $\sqrt{n}$-consistent, asymptotically normal and achieves the semiparametric information bound. The proposed inference procedures are evaluated by extensive simulation studies and illustrated with an application to the sequential organ failure assessment data from the Improving Care of Acute Lung Injury Patients study.

An ancient and counterintuitive phenomenon know as the Mpemba effect (water can cool faster when initially heated up) showcases the critical role of initial conditions in relaxation processes. How to realize and utilize this effect for speeding up relaxation is an important but challenging task in purely quantum system till now. Here, we report the first experiment, as far as we know,about the strong Mpemba effect in a single trapped ion system in which an exponentially expedited relaxation in time is observed by preparing an optimal initial state with no excitation of the slowest decaying mode. Also, we find that the condition of realizing such effect coincides with the Liouvillian exceptional point, featuring the coalescence of both the eigenvalues and the eigenmodes of the system. Our work provides an efficient strategy to exponentially accelerate relaxations of quantum system to their stationary state, and suggests a link unexplored yet between the Mpemba effect and the non-Hermitian physics. It could open up the door to engineer a wide range of dissipative quantum systems by utilizing the anomalous Mpemba effect, for applications in quantum simulation and quantum information processing., Comment: Accepted by Nature Communications

We reinvestigate the phase transitions of the Ising model on the Kagome lattice with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interactions, which has a six-state-clock spin ice ground state and two consecutive Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transitions. Employing the classical Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, the phases are characterized by the magnetic order parameter, and the critical temperatures are obtained by the finite-size scaling of related physical quantities. Moreover, we attempt to gain general information on the phase transitions from the MC process instead of MC results and successfully extract the correct transition points with surprisingly high accuracy. Specifically, we focus on the selected data set of uncorrelated MC configurations and quantify the MC process using the distribution of two-configuration Hamming distances in this small data collection. This distribution is more than a quantity that features different behaviors in different phases but also nicely supports the same BKT scaling form as the order parameter, from which we successfully determine the two BKT transition points with surprisingly high accuracy. We also discuss the connection between the phase transitions and the intrinsic dimension extracted from the Hamming distances, which is widely used in the growing field of machine learning and is reported to be able to detect critical points. Our findings provide a new understanding of the spin ice transitions in the Kagome lattice and can hopefully be used similarly to identify transitions in the quantum system on the same lattice with strong frustrations., Comment: 12 figures

Adversarial perturbations have drawn great attentions in various machine learning models. In this paper, we investigate the sample adversarial perturbations for nonlinear support vector machines (SVMs). Due to the implicit form of the nonlinear functions mapping data to the feature space, it is difficult to obtain the explicit form of the adversarial perturbations. By exploring the special property of nonlinear SVMs, we transform the optimization problem of attacking nonlinear SVMs into a nonlinear KKT system. Such a system can be solved by various numerical methods. Numerical results show that our method is efficient in computing adversarial perturbations.

We propose a deep generative approach to nonparametric estimation of conditional survival and hazard functions with right-censored data. The key idea of the proposed method is to first learn a conditional generator for the joint conditional distribution of the observed time and censoring indicator given the covariates, and then construct the Kaplan-Meier and Nelson-Aalen estimators based on this conditional generator for the conditional hazard and survival functions. Our method combines ideas from the recently developed deep generative learning and classical nonparametric estimation in survival analysis. We analyze the convergence properties of the proposed method and establish the consistency of the generative nonparametric estimators of the conditional survival and hazard functions. Our numerical experiments validate the proposed method and demonstrate its superior performance in a range of simulated models. We also illustrate the applications of the proposed method in constructing prediction intervals for survival times with the PBC (Primary Biliary Cholangitis) and SUPPORT (Study to Understand Prognoses and Preferences for Outcomes and Risks of Treatments) datasets., Comment: 33 pages, 14 figures
