The Mesozoic subduction zone over the Dongsha Waters (DSWs) of the South China Sea (SCS) is a part of the westward subduction of the ancient Pacific plate. Based on the comprehensive interpretation of deep reflection seismic profile data and polar magnetic anomaly data, and the zircon dating results of igneous rocks drilled from well LF35-1-1, the Mesozoic subduction zone in the northeast SCS is accurately identified, and a Mesozoic subduction model is proposed. The accretion wedges, trenches, and igneous rock zones together form the Mesozoic subduction zone. The evolution of the Mesozoic subduction zone can be divided into two stages: continental subduction during the Late Jurassic and continental collision during the late Cretaceous. The Mesozoic subduction zone controlled the structural pattern and evolution of the Chaoshan depression (CSD) during the Mesozoic and Neogene eras. The gas source of the hydrate comes from thermogenic gas, which is accompanied by mud diapir activity and migrates along the fault. The gas accumulates to form gas hydrates at the bottom of the stable domain; BSR can be seen above the mud diapir structure; that is, hydrate deposits are formed under the influence of mud diapir structures, belonging to a typical leakage type genesis model. Through extensive data research and analysis, this paper comprehensively summarizes the status and key insights of global carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) development. It aims to gain a comprehensive understanding of the relevant policies, technologies, and security measures adopted by major countries in their CCS development processes. Furthermore, it explores the existing status and limitations of China's offshore development efforts, while providing valuable recommendations for enhancing China's offshore CCS initiatives, as well as serving as a reference for other nations worldwide. Offshore CCS plays a crucial role for China to achieve the development target of carbon peak and carbon neutrality, due to its energy structure and industrial distribution. While China possesses significant offshore CCS potential, achieving commercialization still requires substantial efforts. To facilitate the process and draw insights from successful experiences in other countries, this paper illustrates the characteristics and generalizes the experience of offshore CCS industry practices in America, Europe and Japan, respectively. Furthermore, it is recommended that a new round of investigation into offshore CCS potential be conducted, while promoting integrated collaboration between geological surveying and marine scientific research. The particle size of sediments below the seabed is a crucial factor affecting the formation and enrichment of gas hydrates. Apart from the formation and enrichment law of gas hydrate in coarse‐grained sediments (dominated by a sandy‐sized fraction), in the fine‐grained sediments (<62.5 μm) which accounts for more than 90% of offshore gas hydrate resources globally, the control effect of sediment particle size on gas hydrate is still unclear. Therefore, understanding the relationship between the fine‐grained sediment particle size and gas hydrate enrichment is essential for revealing the global distribution and dynamic evolution of gas hydrates. Here, we analyzed the vertical gas hydrate saturation, particle size parameters of sediments, whole‐rock minerals, and clay mineral components based on drilling data and sediment samples from fine‐grained gas hydrate reservoirs (GHRs) in the Shenhu area of the northern South China Sea. The results show that in fine‐grained sediments, the coarse particles cannot improve the reservoir quality or enrich the gas hydrate because many fine particles fill the intergranular pores formed by the coarse particles. Meanwhile, the fine particles were dominated by clay minerals, especially in the illite/smectite mixed layer, which significantly reduced the permeability of the sediment layer and was not conducive to the enrichment of gas hydrates. Moreover, sedimentary processes directly control the sediment particle size and mineral composition, which play an essential role in controlling GHRs at the macroscale. In the fine‐grained sediments, very fine sediments (<8 μm) have a more significant negative impact on gas hydrate enrichment. Plain Language Summary: Offshore gas hydrates have great global resources and environmental significance. Gas hydrate is the important pool that stores methane in offshore fine‐grained sediments. However, the formation and enrichment rules of gas hydrate in fine‐grained sediments still need to be clarified. We collected sediment samples from the gas hydrate reservoirs and adjacent layers in the northern South China Sea and analyzed the controlling effect of sediment particle size on the formation and enrichment of gas hydrate in the fine‐grained sediments. We found that the coarse particles in the fine‐grained sediments cannot play a positive role in the enrichment of gas hydrate. The very fine‐grained particles (<8 μm) seriously restrict the formation and enrichment of gad hydrate, which is worthy of attention in fine‐grained reservoirs. Our results on natural sediments partly conform to previous laboratory simulation results on induced gas hydrate formation, effectively establishing potential links between laboratory simulations and natural deposition records. The complex contacts between gas hydrate and free gas have been confirmed by gas hydrate pilot production in the Pearl River Mouth Basin, South China Sea. The laminated clay silt reservoirs have high amplitude reflections which may be filled with different saturations of gas hydrates, free gas and the coexistence between gas hydrate and free gas. To distinguish the variations of amplitude reflections caused by different reservoirs properties below the bottom simulating reflection, we combine the forward modelling, pre‐stack gathers with different incident angles and well log analysis to conduct the seismic responses. A number of geological models are established with variable saturations and different interfaces between gas hydrate and free gas. First, we analyse the seismic and well log responses at Sites W11, W01 and W17 near the production test area. Then, we perform the forward modelling to quantify the differences among seismic reflections with different saturations, thickness, incident angles and strata dips in free gas‐ or gas hydrate‐bearing geological models. We extract the seismic amplitudes along the bottom simulating reflection and other layers to compare with the amplitudes generated from forward modelling. The results indicate that the inclined intervals below the bottom simulating reflection have high amplitude, continuous reflection and polarity reversal which may be caused by thin gas reservoir and the interlayered gas hydrate and free gas with different saturations. The top interfaces of the gas hydrate‐ and free gas‐bearing layers show typical Class III amplitude versus offset and exhibit high amplitude reflections at seismic data with near, mid and far‐incident angles, which are easy to distinguish. Gas hydrates have been considered as a new energy that could replace conventional fossil resources in the future because of their high energy density, environmental friendliness, and enormous reserves. To further analyze the potential distribution of gas hydrate stability zones (GHSZ) and the formation of a gas hydrate system in the Shenhu area of the South China Sea (SCS), a 3D petroleum simulation model (PSM) was built from 3D seismic interpretations and all available geological data. Based on the thermal calibration of the 3D model, the evolution of the GHSZ, hydrocarbon generation and migration, and the formation and accumulation of gas hydrates were simulated for the first time in the area. Thermal simulation shows that the methane source of gas hydrate originated from shallow biogenic gas and deep thermogenic gas. Most areas are dominated by shallow biogenic gas, while, only about 3% of the deep thermogenic gas derived from Enping Formation source rock and contributed to the gas hydrate formation within a few areas in the southeast. The thermogenic gas migrated vertically into the GHSZ through connecting faults, mud diapir, and/or gas chimney to form gas hydrate. The source rocks of the Wenchang Formation, a deep thermogenic gas source, began to enter the main hydrocarbon generation window at 28.4 Ma. The Enping source rock began to generate oil from 25 Ma on and gas from 16 Ma on. Since 5.3 Ma, most areas of the source rocks have generated a gas window, and only the shallower parts in the east still in the oil window, which had lasted until now. The shallow biogenic gas source rocks from the Hanjiang, Yuehai, and Wanshan formations generated gas in different periods, respectively. The Qionghai Formation began to generate hydrocarbon from 0.3 Ma and until now. Other results show that the GHSZ developed mainly during the Quaternary and Neogene (Wanshan Formation) and the GHSZ is thicker in the southern area and thinner in the northern part with a positive correlation with water depth. Starting at 11.6 Ma, the GHSZ developed in the Hanjiang Formation in the south of the Shenhu area and gradually expanded to the north to cover most of the study area at 5.3 Ma during the Yuehai Formation. From 1.8 Ma on, the GHSZ covered the entire study area. At the same time, the GHSZ in the Hanjiang Formation disappeared because of the change in temperature and pressure. At present, the GHSZ in the Yuehai Formation has disappeared, while the Quaternary and Wanshan are the two main formations for GHSZ development. The formation and distribution of gas hydrates are fundamentally controlled by the space-time coupling between the hydrocarbon generation and expulsion time and distribution of the GHSZ. The simulation results of gas hydrate accumulation and distribution were verified by drilling results and the matching rate is 84%. This is the first time that 3D simulation was successfully conducted with PSM technology in the Shenhu area and it provides important guidance for gas hydrate study in other areas of the SCS. Mud diapirs and gas chimneys are widely developed in continental slope areas, which can provide sufficient gas for hydrate formation, and they are important for finding natural gas hydrates. Based on the interpretation and analysis of high-resolution 2D and 3D seismic data covering the deep-water area in the Qiongdongnan Basin (QDNB), northern South China Sea, we studied the formation mechanism of mud diapirs and gas chimneys and their relationship with natural gas hydrates. Mud diapirs and gas chimneys are columnar and domelike in shape and the internal regions of these bodies have abnormal reflections characterized by fuzzy, chaotic, and blanking zones. The reflection events terminate at the rims of mud diapirs and gas chimneys with pull-up reflections and pull-down reflections, respectively. In addition, 'bright spots' and diapiric-associated faults occur adjacent to mud diapirs and gas chimneys. The rapidly deposited and deeply buried fine sediments filling in the Tertiary in deep-water areas of the QDNB and overpressure potential derived from undercompacted mudstones, as well as from the pressurization of organic matter and hydrocarbon generation, provide abundant materials and intensive driving forces for the formation of mud diapirs and gas chimneys. Bottom simulating reflectors (BSRs) with strong amplitude and high or poor continuity were recognized atop the mud diapirs and gas chimneys and in the structural highs within the same region, indicating that they have a close relationship with each other. The mud diapirs and gas chimneys and associated high-angle faults provide favourable vertical pathways for the hydrocarbons migrating from deep strata to shallow natural gas hydrate stability zones where natural gas hydrates accumulate; however, some BSRs are characterized by weak amplitude and poor continuity, which can be affected by high temperature and overpressure in the process of the mud diapir and gas chimney activities.
