Noble gas radionuclides, including 81Kr (t1/2 = 229,000 years), 85Kr (t1/2 = 10.8 years), and 39Ar (t1/2 = 269 years), possess nearly ideal chemical and physical properties for studies of earth and environmental processes. Recent advances in Atom Trap Trace Analysis (ATTA), a laser-based atom counting method, have enabled routine measurements of the radiokrypton isotopes, as well as the demonstration of the ability to measure 39Ar in environmental samples. Here we provide an overview of the ATTA technique, and a survey of recent progress made in several laboratories worldwide. We review the application of noble gas radionuclides in the geosciences and discuss how ATTA can help advance these fields, specifically: determination of groundwater residence times using 81Kr, 85Kr, and 39Ar; dating old glacial ice using 81Kr; and an 39Ar survey of the main water masses of the oceans, to study circulation pathways and estimate mean residence times. Other scientific questions involving a deeper circulation of fluids in the Earth's crust and mantle are also within the scope of future applications. We conclude that the geoscience community would greatly benefit from an ATTA facility dedicated to this field, with instrumentation for routine measurements, as well as for research on further development of ATTA methods. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

The reaction of dissolved Pb 2+ with calcite surfaces at near-equilibrium conditions involves adsorption of Pb 2+ and precipitation of secondary heteroepitaxial Pb-carbonate minerals. A more complex behavior is observed under far-from-equilibrium conditions, including strong inhibition of calcite dissolution, development of microtopography, and near-surface incorporation of multiple monolayers (ML) of Pb 2+ without precipitation of secondary phases [where 1 ML ≡ 1 Ca/20.2 Å 2 , the crystallographic site density of the calcite (104) lattice plane]. However, the mechanistic controls governing far-from-equilibrium reactivity are not well understood. Here, we observe the interfacial incorporation of dissolved Pb 2+ during the dissolution of calcite (104) surfaces at pH ∼ 3.7 in a flow-through reaction cell, revealing the formation of a ∼1 nm thick Pb-rich calcite layer with a total Pb coverage of ∼1.4 ML. These observations of the sorbed Pb distribution used resonant anomalous X-ray reflectivity, X-ray fluorescence, and nanoinfrared atomic force microscopy. We propose that this altered surface layer represents a novel sorption mode that is stabilized by conditions of sustained disequilibrium. This behavior may significantly impact the transport of dissolved metals during disequilibrium processes occurring in acid mine drainage and subsurface CO 2 injection and, if appropriately accounted for, could improve the predictive capability of geochemical reactive-transport models.

Reactions of mineral surfaces with dissolved metal ions at far-from-equilibrium conditions can deviate significantly from those in near-equilibrium systems due to steep concentration gradients, ion-surface interactions, and reactant transport effects that can lead to emergent behavior. We explored the effect of dissolved Pb 2+ on the dissolution rate and topographic evolution of calcite (104) surfaces under far-from-equilibrium acidic conditions (pH 3.7) in a confined single-pass laminar-flow geometry. Operando measurements by digital holographic microscopy were conducted over a range of Pb 2+ concentrations ([Pb 2+ ] = 0 to 5 × 10 -2 M) and flow velocities ( v = 1.67-53.3 mm s -1 ). Calcite (104) surface dissolution rates decreased with increasing [Pb 2+ ]. The inhibition of dissolution and the emergence of unique topographic features, including micropyramids, variable etch pit shapes, and larger scale topographic patterns, became increasingly apparent at [Pb 2+ ] ≥ 5 × 10 -3 M. A better understanding of such dynamic reactivity could be crucial for constructing accurate models of geochemical transport in aqueous carbonate systems.

2,4-Dinitroanisole (DNAN) is a main constituent in various new insensitive munition formulations. Although DNAN is susceptible to biotic and abiotic transformations, in many environmental instances, transformation mechanisms are difficult to resolve, distinguish, or apportion on the basis solely of analysis of concentrations. We used compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) to investigate the characteristic isotope fractionations of the biotic (by three microbial consortia and three pure cultures) and abiotic (by 9,10-anthrahydroquinone-2-sulfonic acid [AHQS]) transformations of DNAN. The correlations of isotope enrichment factors (Λ N/C ) for biotic transformations had a range of values from 4.93 ± 0.53 to 12.19 ± 1.23, which is entirely distinct from Λ N/C values reported previously for alkaline hydrolysis, enzymatic hydrolysis, reduction by Fe 2+ -bearing minerals and iron-oxide-bound Fe 2+ , and UV-driven phototransformations. The Λ N/C value associated with the abiotic reduction by AHQS was 38.76 ± 2.23, within the range of previously reported values for DNAN reduction by Fe 2+ -bearing minerals and iron-oxide-bound Fe 2+ , albeit the mean Λ N/C was lower. These results enhance the database of isotope effects accompanying DNAN transformations under environmentally relevant conditions, allowing better evaluation of the extents of biotic and abiotic transformations of DNAN that occur in soils, groundwaters, surface waters, and the marine environment.

Despite being the largest freshwater lake system in the world, relatively little is known about the sestonic microbial community structure in the Laurentian Great Lakes. The goal of this research was to better understand this ecosystem using high-throughput sequencing of microbial communities as a function of water depth at six locations in the westernmost Great Lakes of Superior and Michigan. The water column was characterized by gradients in temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, and other physicochemical parameters with depth. Mean nitrate concentrations were 32 μmol/L, with only slight variation within and between the lakes, and with depth. Mean available phosphorus was 0.07 μmol/L, resulting in relatively large N:P ratios (97:1) indicative of P limitation. Abundances of the phyla Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Cyanobacteria, Thaumarchaeota, and Verrucomicrobia differed significantly among the Lakes. Candidatus Nitrosopumilus was present in greater abundance in Lake Superior compared to Lake Michigan, suggesting the importance of ammonia-oxidating archaea in water column N cycling in Lake Superior. The Shannon diversity index was negatively correlated with pH, temperature, and salinity, and positively correlated with DO, latitude, and N 2 saturation. Results of this study suggest that DO, pH, temperature, and salinity were major drivers shaping the community composition in the Great Lakes.

Deicing salt is an important component of road safety during winter storms. Stormwater infiltration best management practices aim to prevent the salt from polluting streams and waterways, but this may shift pollutants to groundwater resources. In response to limited field studies investigating groundwater quality impacts caused by input of salt from stormwater infiltration best management practices, we monitored water levels and quality of groundwater at various depths in an unconfined aquifer around a stormwater infiltration basin using in situ sensors coupled with grab sampling. Our observations revealed differences in groundwater chemistry with depth in the aquifer and processes that were driven by the seasonal changes in the chemistry of stormwater (salt-impacted in winter and fresh in non-winter) recharging the aquifer. Water-matrix interactions in the vadose zone beneath the basin affected the transport of sodium (Na) into groundwater following non-winter recharge. Sodium movement through the aquifer was delayed relative to chloride (Cl), indicating a longer residence time of Na in the vadose zone. Radium (Ra) concentrations were correlated with Cl concentrations, suggesting salt-impacted recharge caused desorption of Ra into groundwater because of increased salinity. Stormwater-influenced groundwater followed a preferential flow path due to heterogeneity of the aquifer materials, and water chemistry varied with time and location along the flow path. Compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA), position-specific isotope analysis (PSIA), and computational modeling (e.g., quantum mechanical models; reactive-transport models) are increasingly being used to monitor and predict biotic and abiotic transformations of organic contaminants in the field. However, identifying the isotope effect(s) associated with a specific transformation remains challenging in many cases. Here, we describe and interpret the position-specific isotope effects of C and N associated with a S N 2Ar reaction mechanism by a combination of CSIA and PSIA using quantitative 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry, and density-functional theory, using 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN) as a model compound. The position-specific 13 C enrichment factor of O-C 1 bond at the methoxy group attachment site (ε C1 ) was found to be approximately -41‰, a diagnostic value for transformation of DNAN to its reaction products 2,4-dinitrophenol and methanol. Theoretical kinetic isotope effects calculated for DNAN isotopologues agreed well with the position-specific isotope effects measured by CSIA and PSIA. This combination of measurements and theoretical predictions demonstrates a useful tool for evaluating degradation efficiencies and/or mechanisms of organic contaminants and may promote new and improved applications of isotope analysis in laboratory and field investigations., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Natural chlorate (ClO 3 - ) is widely distributed in terrestrial and extraterrestrial environments. To improve understanding of the origins and distribution of ClO 3 - , we developed and tested methods to determine the multi-dimensional isotopic compositions (δ 18 O, Δ 17 O, δ 37 Cl, 36 Cl/Cl) of ClO 3 - and then applied the methods to samples of natural nitrate-rich caliche-type salt deposits in the Atacama Desert, Chile, and Death Valley, USA. Tests with reagents and artificial mixed samples indicate stable-isotope ratios were minimally affected by the purification processes. Chlorate extracted from Atacama samples had δ 18 O = +7.0 to +11.1‰, Δ 17 O = +5.7 to +6.4‰, δ 37 Cl = -1.4 to +1.3‰, and 36 Cl/Cl = 48 × 10 -15 to 104 × 10 -15 . Chlorate from Death Valley samples had δ 18 O = -6.9 to +1.6‰, Δ 17 O = +0.4 to +2.6‰, δ 37 Cl = +0.8 to +1.0‰, and 36 Cl/Cl = 14 × 10 -15 to 44 × 10 -15 . Positive Δ 17 O values of natural ClO 3 - indicate that its production involved reaction with O 3 , while its Cl isotopic composition is consistent with a tropospheric or near-surface source of Cl. The Δ 17 O and δ 18 O values of natural ClO 3 - are positively correlated, as are those of ClO 4 - and NO 3 - from the same localities, possibly indicating variation in the relative contributions of O 3 as a source of O in the formation of the oxyanions. In surface water environments, photodegradation may be an important process for the natural attenuation of 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN). Understanding the photolysis and photocatalysis mechanisms of DNAN is difficult because the photosensitivity of nitro groups and the behavior of DNAN as a potential photosensitizer are unclear in aqueous solutions. Here, we investigate the degradation mechanisms of DNAN under UV-A (λ ~ 350 nm) and UV-C (λ ~ 254 nm) irradiation in a photolysis reactor where aqueous solution was continuously recycled through a UV-irradiated volume from a non-irradiated external reservoir. By tracking C and N isotopic fractionation in DNAN and its reaction products, we observed normal 13 C fractionation (ε C = -3.34‰) and inverse 15 N fractionation (ε N = +12.30‰) under UV-A (λ ~ 350 nm) irradiation, in contrast to inverse 13 C fractionation (ε C = +1.45‰) and normal 15 N fractionation (ε N = -3.79‰) under UV-C (λ ~ 254 nm) irradiation. These results indicate that DNAN can act as a photosensitizer and may follow a product-to-parent reversion mechanism in surface water environments. We present the first report of biotransformation of 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO) and 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN), replacements for the explosives 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) and 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), respectively, by methane-oxidizing cultures under aerobic conditions. Two consortia, dominated by Methylosinus spp., degraded both compounds with transient production of reduced NTO products, and non-stoichiometric production of reduced DNAN products. No release of inorganic nitrogen was observed with either compound, indicating that NTO and DNAN may be utilized as nitrogen sources by these consortia. The pure culture Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b also degraded both compounds. Degradation was observed in the presence of acetylene (a known inhibitor of methane monooxygenase; MMO) when methanol was supplied, indicating that MMO was not involved. Furthermore, studies with purified soluble MMO (sMMO) from OB3b indicated that neither compound was a substrate for sMMO. Degradation was inhibited by 2-iodosobenzoic acid, but not by dicoumarol, suggesting involvement of an oxygen- and dicoumarol-insensitive (nitro)reductase. These results indicate methanotrophs can aerobically degrade NTO and DNAN via one or more (nitro)reductases, with sMMO serving a supporting role deriving reducing equivalents from methane. This finding is important because methanotrophic bacteria are widely dispersed, and may represent a previously unrecognized route of NTO and DNAN biotransformation in aerobic environments., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. The Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System in Northeast Africa and the Middle East is a huge water resource of inestimable value to the population. However, natural radioactivity impairs groundwater quality throughout the aquifer posing a radiological health risk to millions of people. Here we present measurements of radium isotopes in Nubian Aquifer groundwater from population centers in the Western Desert of Egypt. Groundwater has 226 Ra and 228 Ra activities ranging from 0.01 to 2.11 and 0.03 to 2.31 Bq/L, respectively. Most activities (combined 226 Ra +  228 Ra) exceed U.S. EPA drinking water standards. The estimated annual radiation doses associated with ingestion of water having the highest measured Ra activities are up to 138 and 14 times the WHO-recommended maxima for infants and adults, respectively. Dissolved Ra activities are positively correlated with barium and negatively correlated with sulfate, while barite is approximately saturated. In contrast, Ra is uncorrelated with salinity. These observations indicate the dominant geochemical mechanisms controlling dissolved Ra activity may be barite precipitation and sulfate reduction, along with input from alpha-recoil and dissolution of aquifer minerals and loss by radioactive decay. Radium mitigation measures should be adopted for water quality management where Nubian Aquifer groundwater is produced for agricultural and domestic consumption.

Perchlorate (ClO 4 ö ) has been detected at concentrations of concern for human health on a large scale in groundwater used for drinking water supplies in NE France. Two sources are suspected: a military source related to World War I (WWI) and an agricultural source related to past use of Chilean nitrate fertilizers. The sources and behavior of ClO 4 ö have been studied in groundwater and rivers near the Reims city, by monitoring monthly the major ions and ClO 4 - concentrations for two years (2017-2019), and by measuring the isotopic composition of ClO 4 ö and NO 3 ö in water samples. ClO 4 ö was detected throughout the study area with high concentrations (> 4 μg⋅L -1 ) detected mainly downgradient of the Champagne Mounts, where large quantities of ammunition were used, stored and destroyed during and after WWI. A WWI military origin of ClO 4 - is inferred from isotopic analysis and groundwater ages. Different tendencies of ClO 4 - variation are observed and interpreted by a combination of ClO 4 - concentrations, aquifer functioning and historical investigations, revealing major sources of ClO 4 - (e.g., unexploded ordnance, ammunition destruction sites) and its transfer mechanisms in the aquifer. The environmental fate of insensitive munitions compounds, such as 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN), has drawn increasing attention because of their growing use in military activities. One of the main attenuation mechanisms of DNAN degradation in aqueous environments is alkaline hydrolysis. We investigated the pathway for alkaline hydrolysis of DNAN at pH 12 by a combined approach of experiment and theory. An experiment using 18 O-labeled water was performed to verify the reaction pathway. Calculated free energies for two putative reaction pathways by density-functional theory optimized at the SMD(Pauling)/M06-2X/6-311++G(2d,2p) level including explicit solvation of DNAN by 10 H 2 O molecules and one OH - ion gave a prediction in agreement with the experimental result. This study utilized innovative analyses to develop multiple lines of evidence for natural attenuation of hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) in groundwater at the U.S. Department of Energy's Pantex Plant. RDX, as well as the degradation product 4-nitro-2,4-diazabutanal (NDAB; produced by aerobic biodegradation or alkaline hydrolysis) were detected in a large portion of the plume, with lower concentrations of the nitroso-containing metabolites produced during anaerobic biodegradation. 16S metagenomic sequencing detected the presence of bacteria known to aerobically degrade RDX (e.g., Gordonia, Rhodococcus) and NDAB (Methylobacterium), as well as the known anoxic RDX degrader Pseudomonas fluorescens I-C. Proteomic analysis detected both the aerobic RDX degradative enzyme XplA, and the anoxic RDX degradative enzyme XenB. Groundwater enrichment cultures supplied with low concentrations of labile carbon confirmed the potential of the extant groundwater community to aerobically degrade RDX and produce NDAB. Compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) of RDX collected at the site showed fractionation of nitrogen isotopes with δ 15 N values ranging from approximately -5‰ to +9‰, providing additional evidence of RDX degradation. Taken together, these results provide evidence of in situ RDX degradation in the Pantex Plant groundwater. Ion adsorption at solid-water interfaces is commonly described by interactions between specific surface sites and adsorbed ions in classical models. However, energetic contributions from non-site-specific ion-ion interactions have been less well understood. Here, we report nonclassical behaviors observed during competitive adsorption between Sr 2+ and Na + /Rb + at the negatively charged muscovite mica (001)-water interface, revealing apparent controls of adsorbed ion speciation over the interfacial reactivity. In the absence of competing cations, Sr 2+ adsorbs in approximately equivalent proportions of inner-sphere and outer-sphere complexes, whereas it adsorbs predominantly as an outer-sphere complex in the presence of Na + /Rb + . This transformation of adsorbed Sr 2+ speciation significantly decreases its adsorption strength, as indicated by the ∼15-fold shift in the Sr 2+ adsorption edge concentration, compared to that calculated from a classical Langmuir isotherm model developed on the basis of site-specific interactions. These observations highlight the importance of non-site-specific interactions in controlling the energetics of chemical reactions at the charged interface.

Most hydrophobic halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) are highly accumulative and persistent in aquatic sediments. The objective of this study was to reveal spatial distributions, temporal trends, and transformation of selected legacy and emerging HFRs in sediments of Lakes Superior, Michigan, and Huron. We collected Ponar grab samples at 112 locations and sediment cores at 28 sites in the three lakes, and measured concentrations of 19 brominated FRs and 12 chlorinated FRs. Based on grab samples, concentrations were higher at southeastern and sites near Sleeping Bear Dunes of Lake Michigan, and Saginaw Bay and the North Channel of Lake Huron. The annual loadings of polybrominated diphenyl either (PBDEs) and Dechlorane Plus (DPs) to sediment have leveled off or been declining since 2000, while loadings of DBDPE and Dec604 have increased since the 1960s in most cores. The concentration ratio of BB101 to BB153 increased with sediment depth, suggesting the occurrence of in situ debromination of BB153. The ratio of dechlorinated anti-Cl 11 DP over anti-DP increases with the increasing latitude of sampling locations, suggesting the occurrence of dechlorination of anti-DP to anti-Cl 11 DP during transport. Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) was sampled at high-spatial resolution in Indian River Bay, DE, USA, in July 2016 to characterize the spatial variability of the activity of the radium and radon isotopes commonly used to estimate SGD. These data were part of an investigation into the methods and challenges of characterizing SGD rates and variability, especially in the coastal aquifer transition from freshwater to saltwater (Hydrogeological processes and near shore spatial variability of radium and radon isotopes for the characterization of submarine groundwater discharge (Duque et al., 2019)). Samples were collected with seepage meters and minipiezometers to obtain sufficient volumes for analytical characterization. Seepage meter samples (for 223 Ra, 224 Ra, 226 Ra, and 228 Ra) were collected at two-hour intervals over a semi-diurnal tidal cycle from 30 seepage meters. Samples for 222 Rn characterization were collected with a minipiezometer from 25 cm below the bay bed at each seepage meter location. Oxidation of magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) has broad implications in geochemistry, environmental science and materials science. Spatially resolving strain fields and defect evolution during oxidation of magnetite provides further insight into its reaction mechanisms. Here we show that the morphology and internal strain distributions within individual nano-sized (~400 nm) magnetite crystals can be visualized using Bragg coherent diffractive imaging (BCDI). Oxidative dissolution in acidic solutions leads to increases in the magnitude and heterogeneity of internal strains. This heterogeneous strain likely results from lattice distortion caused by Fe(II) diffusion that leads to the observed domains of increasing compressive and tensile strains. In contrast, strain evolution is less pronounced during magnetite oxidation at elevated temperature in air. These results demonstrate that oxidative dissolution of magnetite can induce a rich array of strain and defect structures, which could be an important factor that contributes to the high reactivity observed on magnetite particles in aqueous environment.

Most experimental studies measuring the effects of climate change on terrestrial C cycling have focused on processes that occur at relatively short time scales (up to a few years). However, climate-soil C interactions are influenced over much longer time scales by bioturbation and soil weathering affecting soil fertility, ecosystem productivity, and C storage. Elevated CO 2 can increase belowground C inputs and stimulate soil biota, potentially affecting bioturbation, and can decrease soil pH which could accelerate soil weathering rates. To determine whether we could resolve any changes in bioturbation or C storage, we investigated soil profiles collected from ambient and elevated-CO 2 plots at the Free-Air Carbon-Dioxide Enrichment (FACE) forest site at Oak Ridge National Laboratory after 11 years of 13 C-depleted CO 2 release. Profiles of organic carbon concentration, δ 13 C values, and activities of 137 Cs, 210 Pb, and 226 Ra were measured to ∼30 cm depth in replicated soil cores to evaluate the effects of elevated CO 2 on these parameters. Bioturbation models based on fitting advection-diffusion equations to 137 Cs and 210 Pb profiles showed that ambient and elevated-CO 2 plots had indistinguishable ranges of apparent biodiffusion constants, advection rates, and soil mixing times, although apparent biodiffusion constants and advection rates were larger for 137 Cs than for 210 Pb as is generally observed in soils. Temporal changes in profiles of δ 13 C values of soil organic carbon (SOC) suggest that addition of new SOC at depth was occurring at a faster rate than that implied by the net advection term of the bioturbation model. Ratios of ( 210 Pb/ 226 Ra) may indicate apparent soil mixing cells that are consistent with biological mechanisms, possibly earthworms and root proliferation, driving C addition and the mixing of soil between ∼4 cm and ∼18 cm depth. The temporal and spatial trends in sediment of 22 poly- and perfluorinated (PFAS) compounds were investigated in the southern Great Lakes Erie and Ontario as well as Lake St. Clair. Surface concentrations measured by Ponar grab samples indicated a trend for greater concentrations near to urban sites. Mean concentrations ∑ 22 PFAS were 15.6, 18.2 and 19 ng g -1 dm for Lakes St. Clair, Erie and Ontario, respectively. Perfluoro-n-butanoic acid (PFBA) and Perfluoro-n-hexanoic acid (PFHxA) were frequently determined in surface sediment and upper core samples indicating a shift in use patterns. Where PFBA was identified it was at relatively great concentrations typically >10 ng g -1 dm. However as PFBA and PFHxA are less likely to bind to sediment they may be indicative of pore water concentrations Sedimentation rates between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario differ greatly with greater rates observed in Lake Erie. In Lake Ontario, in general concentrations of PFAS observed in core samples closely follow the increase in use along with an observable change due to regulation implementation in the 1970s for water protection. However some of the more water soluble PFAS were observed in deeper core layers than the time of production could account for, indicating potential diffusion within the sediment. Given the greater sedimentation rates in Lake Erie, it was hoped to observe in greater resolution changes since the mid-1990s. However, though some decrease was observed at some locations the results are not clear. Current and historical concentrations of 22 poly- and perfluorinated compounds (PFASs) in sediment collected from Lake Superior and northern Lake Michigan in 2011 and Lake Huron in 2012 are reported. The sampling was performed in two ways, Ponar grabs of surface sediments for current spatial distribution across the lake and dated cores for multi-decadal temporal trends. Mean concentrations of the sum of PFASs (∑PFASs) were 1.5, 4.6 and 3.1 ng g -1 dry mas (dm) in surface sediments for Lakes Superior, Michigan and Huron, respectively. Of the five Laurentian Lakes, the watersheds of Superior and Huron are the less densely populated by humans, and concentrations observed were typically less and from more diffuse sources, due to lesser urbanization and industrialization. However, some regions of greater concentrations were observed and might indicate more local, point sources. In core samples concentrations ranged from -1 dm among the three lakes with concentrations typically increasing with time. Distributions of PFASs within dated cores largely corresponded with increase in use of PFASs, but with physiochemical characteristics also affecting distribution. Perfluoroalkyl sulfonates (PFSAs) with chain lengths >7 that include perfluoro-n-octane sulfonate (PFOS) bind more strongly to sediment, which resulted in more accurate analyses of temporal trends. Shorter-chain PFASs, such as perfluoro-n-butanoic acid which is the primary replacement for C8 PFASs that have been phased out, are more soluble and were identified in some core layers at depths corresponding to pre-production periods. Thus, analyses of temporal trends of these more soluble compounds in cores of sediments were less accurate. Radium isotopes ( 226 Ra and 228 Ra) were analyzed in 18 groundwater samples from the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System (NSAS) and the shallow alluvial aquifers overlying the basement complex of the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt. Groundwater samples from deep Nubian aquifer wells (total depths 747 to 1250m) have 226 Ra and 228 Ra activities ranging from 0.168 to 0.802 and 0.056 to 1.032Bq/L, respectively. The shallower Nubian aquifer wells (63 to 366m) have 226 Ra and 228 Ra activities ranging from 0.033 to 0.191 and 0.029 to 0.312Bq/L, respectively. The basement shallow alluvial aquifers have 226 Ra and 228 Ra activities ranging from 0.014 to 0.038 and 0.007 to 0.051Bq/L, respectively. Combined Ra activities in most wells were generally in excess of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the European Union (EU), and the World Health Organization (WHO) maximum contaminant levels (MCL) for drinking water. Radium in groundwater is produced mainly by decay of parent nuclides in the aquifer solids, and observed activities of dissolved Ra isotopes result from a combination of alpha-recoil, adsorption/desorption, co-precipitation/dissolution processes. The observed correlation between Ra activities and salinity indicates that adsorption/desorption processes may be the dominant factor controlling Ra mobility in Sinai groundwater. Radium activities in central and northern Sinai are generally higher than those in southern Sinai, consistent with a gradual increase in salinity and water-rock interaction with increasing groundwater age. Barite is approximately saturated in the groundwater and may limit maximum dissolved Ra concentration. Natural perchlorate (ClO 4 - ) in soil and groundwater exhibits a wide range in stable isotopic compositions (δ 37 Cl, δ 18 O, and Δ 17 O), indicating that ClO 4 - may be formed through more than one pathway and/or undergoes post-depositional isotopic alteration. Plants are known to accumulate ClO 4 - , but little is known about their ability to alter its isotopic composition. We examined the potential for plants to alter the isotopic composition of ClO 4 - in hydroponic and field experiments conducted with snap beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). In hydroponic studies, anion ratios indicated that ClO 4 - was transported from solutions into plants similarly to NO 3 - but preferentially to Cl - (4-fold). The ClO 4 - isotopic compositions of initial ClO 4 - reagents, final growth solutions, and aqueous extracts from plant tissues were essentially indistinguishable, indicating no significant isotope effects during ClO 4 - uptake or accumulation. The ClO 4 - isotopic composition of field-grown snap beans was also consistent with that of ClO 4 - in varying proportions from irrigation water and precipitation. NO 3 - uptake had little or no effect on NO 3 - isotopic compositions in hydroponic solutions. However, a large fractionation effect with an apparent ε ( 15 N/ 18 O) ratio of 1.05 was observed between NO 3 - in hydroponic solutions and leaf extracts, consistent with partial NO 3 - reduction during assimilation within plant tissue. We also explored the feasibility of evaluating sources of ClO 4 - in commercial produce, as illustrated by spinach, for which the ClO 4 - isotopic composition was similar to that of indigenous natural ClO 4 - . Our results indicate that some types of plants can accumulate and (presumably) release ClO 4 - to soil and groundwater without altering its isotopic characteristics. Ion exchange at charged solid-liquid interfaces is central to a broad range of chemical and transport phenomena. Real-time observations of adsorption/desorption at the molecular-scale elucidate exchange reaction pathways. Here we report temporal variation in the distribution of Rb + species at the muscovite (001)-water interface during exchange with Na + . Time-resolved resonant anomalous X-ray reflectivity measurements at 25 °C reveal that Rb + desorption occurs over several tens of seconds during which thermodynamically stable inner-sphere Rb + slowly transforms to a less stable outer-sphere Rb + . In contrast, Rb + adsorption is about twice as fast, proceeding from Rb + in the bulk solution to the stable inner-sphere species. The Arrhenius plot of the adsorption/desorption rate constants measured from 9 to 55 °C shows that the pre-exponential factor for desorption is significantly smaller than that for adsorption, indicating that this reduced attempt frequency of cation detachment largely explains the slow cation exchange processes at the interface.

This is the first study on organophosphate ester (OPEs) flame retardants and plasticizers in the sediment of the Great Lakes. Concentrations of 14 OPEs were measured in three sediment cores and 88 Ponar surface grabs collected from Lakes Ontario, Michigan, and Superior of North America. The sum of these OPEs (Σ 14 OPEs) in Ponar grabs averaged 2.2, 4.7, and 16.6 ng g -1 dw in Lakes Superior, Michigan, and Ontario, respectively. Multiple linear regression analyses demonstrated statistically significant associations between logarithm concentrations of Σ 14 OPEs as well as selected congeners in surface grab samples and sediment organic carbon content as well as a newly developed urban distance factor. Temporal trends observed in dated sediment cores from Lake Michigan demonstrated that the recent increase in depositional flux to sediment is dominated by chlorinated OPEs, particularly tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP), which has a doubling time of about 20 years. Downward diffusion within sediment may have caused vertical fractionation of OPEs over time. Two relatively hydrophilic OPEs including TCPP had much higher concentrations in sediment than estimated based on equilibria between water and sediment organic carbon. Approximately a quarter (17 tonnes) of the estimated total OPE burden (63 tonnes) in Lake Michigan resides in sediment, which may act as a secondary source releasing OPEs to the water column for years to come.

Rationale: Perchlorate (ClO 4 - ) is a common trace constituent of water, soils, and plants; it has both natural and synthetic sources and is subject to biodegradation. The stable isotope ratios of Cl and O provide three independent quantities for ClO 4 - source attribution and natural attenuation studies: δ 37 Cl, δ 18 O, and δ 17 O (or Δ 17 O or 17 Δ) values. Documented reference materials, calibration schemes, methods, and interferences will improve the reliability of such studies., Methods: Three large batches of KClO 4 with contrasting isotopic compositions were synthesized and analyzed against VSMOW-SLAP, atmospheric O 2 , and international nitrate and chloride reference materials. Three analytical methods were tested for O isotopes: conversion of ClO 4 - to CO for continuous-flow IRMS (CO-CFIRMS), decomposition to O 2 for dual-inlet IRMS (O2-DIIRMS), and decomposition to O 2 with molecular-sieve trap (O2-DIIRMS+T). For Cl isotopes, KCl produced by thermal decomposition of KClO 4 was reprecipitated as AgCl and converted into CH 3 Cl for DIIRMS., Results: KClO 4 isotopic reference materials (USGS37, USGS38, USGS39) represent a wide range of Cl and O isotopic compositions, including non-mass-dependent O isotopic variation. Isotopic fractionation and exchange can affect O isotope analyses of ClO 4 - depending on the decomposition method. Routine analyses can be adjusted for such effects by normalization, using reference materials prepared and analyzed as samples. Analytical errors caused by SO 4 2 - , NO 3 - , ReO 4 2 - , and C-bearing contaminants include isotope mixing and fractionation effects on CO and O 2 , plus direct interference from CO 2 in the mass spectrometer. The results highlight the importance of effective purification of ClO 4 - from environmental samples., Conclusions: KClO 4 reference materials are available for testing methods and calibrating isotopic data for ClO 4 - and other substances with widely varying Cl or O isotopic compositions. Current ClO 4 - extraction, purification, and analysis techniques provide relative isotope-ratio measurements with uncertainties much smaller than the range of values in environmental ClO 4 - , permitting isotopic evaluation of environmental ClO 4 - sources and natural attenuation. Polyhalogenated carbazoles (PHCZs) have been increasingly detected in the environment. Their similarities in chemical structure with legacy pollutants and their potential toxicity have caused increasing concern. In this work, 112 Ponar grab and 28 core sediment samples were collected from Lakes Michigan, Superior, and Huron, and a total of 26 PHCZs were analyzed along with unsubstituted carbazole using gas chromatography coupled with single- or triple-quadrupole mass spectrometry. Our results show that the total accumulation of PHCZs in the sediments of the upper Great Lakes is >3000 tonnes, orders of magnitude greater than those of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209). The 27 individual analytes differ in spatial distribution and temporal trend. Our results showed that PHCZs with substitution patterns of -Br 2-5 , -Cl 1-2 Br 2-4 , or having iodine, were more abundant in sediment of Lake Michigan deposited before 1900 than those deposited more recently, implying a natural origin. Some "emerging" PHCZs have been increasingly deposited into the sediment in recent decades, and deserve further environmental monitoring and research. Other PHCZs with low halogen substitution may form from in situ dehalogenation of PHCZs having more halogens. Anthropogenic sources of PHCZs may exist, particularly for the emerging and low molecular mass congeners.

The mobility of toxic elements, such as lead (Pb) can be attenuated by adsorption, incorporation, and precipitation on carbonate minerals in subsurface environments. Here, we report a study of the bulk transformation of single-crystal calcite (CaCO 3 ) into polycrystalline cerussite (PbCO 3 ) through reaction with acidic Pb-bearing solutions. This reaction began with the growth of a cerussite shell on top of calcite surfaces followed by the replacement of the remaining calcite core. The external shape of the original calcite was preserved by a balance between calcite dissolution and cerussite growth controlled by adjusting the Pb 2+ concentration and pH. The relation between the rounded calcite core and the surrounding lath-shaped cerussite aggregates was imaged by transmission X-ray microscopy, which revealed preferentially elongated cerussite crystals parallel to the surface and edge directions of calcite. The replacement reaction involved concurrent development of ∼100 nm wide pores parallel to calcite c-glide or (12̅0) planes, which may have provided permeability for chemical exchange during the reaction. X-ray reflectivity measurements showed no clear epitaxial relation of cerussite to the calcite (104) surface. These results demonstrate Pb sequestration through mineral replacement reactions and the critical role of nanoporosity (3% by volume) on the solid phase transformation through a dissolution-recrystallization mechanism.

The majority of halogenated organic compounds present in the environment remain unidentified. To address this data gap, we recently developed an untargeted method (data-independent precursor isolation and characteristic fragment; DIPIC-Frag) for identification of unknown organo-bromine compounds. In this study, the method was adapted to enable untargeted screening of natural and synthetic organo-iodine compounds (NSOICs) in sediments. A total of 4,238 NSOIC peaks were detected in sediments from Lake Michigan. Precursor ions and formulas were determined for 2,991 (71%) of the NSOIC peaks. These compounds exhibited variations in abundances (<10(3) to ∼10(7)), m/z values (206.9304-996.9474), retention times (1.0-29.7 min), and number of iodine atoms (1-4). Hierarchical cluster analysis showed that sediments in closer proximity exhibited similar profiles of NSOICs. NSOICs were screened in 10 samples of sediment from the Arctic Ocean to compare the profiles of NSOICs between freshwater and marine sediments. A total of 3,168 NSOIC peaks were detected, and profiles of NSOICs in marine sediments were clearly distinct from Lake Michigan. The coexistence of brominated and iodinated analogues indicated that some NSOICs are of natural origin. Different ratios of abundances of iodinated compounds to brominated analogues were observed and proposed as a marker to distinguish sources of NSOICs.

Arctic winter precipitation is projected to increase with global warming, but some areas will experience decreases in snow accumulation. Although Arctic CH4 emissions may represent a significant climate forcing feedback, long-term impacts of changes in snow accumulation on CH4 fluxes remain uncertain. We measured ecosystem CH4 fluxes and soil CH4 and CO2 concentrations and (13) C composition to investigate the metabolic pathways and transport mechanisms driving moist acidic tundra CH4 flux over the growing season (Jun-Aug) after 18 years of experimental snow depth increases and decreases. Deeper snow increased soil wetness and warming, reducing soil %O2 levels and increasing thaw depth. Soil moisture, through changes in soil %O2 saturation, determined predominance of methanotrophy or methanogenesis, with soil temperature regulating the ecosystem CH4 sink or source strength. Reduced snow (RS) increased the fraction of oxidized CH4 (Fox) by 75-120% compared to Ambient, switching the system from a small source to a net CH4 sink (21 ± 2 and -31 ± 1 mg CH4  m(-2)  season(-1) at Ambient and RS). Deeper snow reduced Fox by 35-40% and 90-100% in medium- (MS) and high- (HS) snow additions relative to Ambient, contributing to increasing the CH4 source strength of moist acidic tundra (464 ± 15 and 3561 ± 97 mg CH4  m(-2)  season(-1) at MS and HS). Decreases in Fox with deeper snow were partly due to increases in plant-mediated CH4 transport associated with the expansion of tall graminoids. Deeper snow enhanced CH4 production within newly thawed soils, responding mainly to soil warming rather than to increases in acetate fermentation expected from thaw-induced increases in SOC availability. Our results suggest that increased winter precipitation will increase the CH4 source strength of Arctic tundra, but the resulting positive feedback on climate change will depend on the balance between areas with more or less snow accumulation than they are currently facing., (© 2016 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Surface grab and core sediment samples were collected from Lakes Michigan, Superior, and Huron from 2010 to 2012, and concentrations of herbicides atrazine, simazine, and alachlor, as well as desethylatrazine (DEA), were determined. Concentrations of atrazine in surface grabs ranged from 0.01 to 1.7 ng/g dry weight and are significantly higher in the southern basin of Lake Michigan (latitude <44°) than other parts of the three lakes. The highest concentration of alachlor was found in sediments of Saginaw Bay in Lake Huron. The inventory and net fluxes of these herbicides were found to decline exponentially from the south to the north. The concentration ratio of DEA to atrazine (DEA/ATZ) increased with latitude, suggesting degradation of atrazine to DEA during atmospheric transport. DEA/ATZ also increased with sediment depth in the sediment cores. Diffusion of deposited herbicides from the upper sediment into deeper sediments has occurred, on the basis of the observed patterns of concentrations in dated sediment cores. Concentrations of atrazine in pore water were estimated and were higher than those reported for the bulk waters, suggesting the occurrence of solid-phase deposition of atrazine through the water column and that contaminated sediments act as a source releasing atrazine to the overlying water.

Unlabelled: Kinetic isotopic fractionation of carbon and nitrogen during RDX (hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine) biodegradation was investigated with pure bacterial cultures under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Relatively large bulk enrichments in (15)N were observed during biodegradation of RDX via anaerobic ring cleavage (ε(15)N = -12.7‰ ± 0.8‰) and anaerobic nitro reduction (ε(15)N = -9.9‰ ± 0.7‰), in comparison to smaller effects during biodegradation via aerobic denitration (ε(15)N = -2.4‰ ± 0.2‰). (13)C enrichment was negligible during aerobic RDX biodegradation (ε(13)C = -0.8‰ ± 0.5‰) but larger during anaerobic degradation (ε(13)C = -4.0‰ ± 0.8‰), with modest variability among genera. Dual-isotope ε(13)C/ε(15)N analyses indicated that the three biodegradation pathways could be distinguished isotopically from each other and from abiotic degradation mechanisms. Compared to the initial RDX bulk δ(15)N value of +9‰, δ(15)N values of the NO2 (-) released from RDX ranged from -7‰ to +2‰ during aerobic biodegradation and from -42‰ to -24‰ during anaerobic biodegradation. Numerical reaction models indicated that N isotope effects of NO2 (-) production were much larger than, but systematically related to, the bulk RDX N isotope effects with different bacteria. Apparent intrinsic ε(15)N-NO2 (-) values were consistent with an initial denitration pathway in the aerobic experiments and more complex processes of NO2 (-) formation associated with anaerobic ring cleavage. These results indicate the potential for isotopic analysis of residual RDX for the differentiation of degradation pathways and indicate that further efforts to examine the isotopic composition of potential RDX degradation products (e.g., NOx) in the environment are warranted., Importance: This work provides the first systematic evaluation of the isotopic fractionation of carbon and nitrogen in the organic explosive RDX during degradation by different pathways. It also provides data on the isotopic effects observed in the nitrite produced during RDX biodegradation. Perchlorate (ClO4(-)) is a ubiquitous environmental contaminant with high human exposure potential. Natural perchlorate forms in the atmosphere from where it deposits onto the surface of Earth, whereas synthetic perchlorate is manufactured as an oxidant for industrial, aerospace, and military applications. Perchlorate exposure can potentially cause adverse health effects in humans by interfering with the production of thyroid hormones through competitively blocking iodide uptake. To control and reduce perchlorate exposure, the contributions of different sources of perchlorate exposure need to be quantified. Thus, we demonstrate a novel approach for determining the contribution of different perchlorate exposure sources by quantifying stable and radioactive chlorine isotopes of perchlorate extracted from composite urine samples from two distinct populations: one in Atlanta, USA and one in Taltal, Chile (Atacama region). Urinary perchlorate from the Atlanta region resembles indigenous natural perchlorate from the western USA (δ(37)Cl=+4.1±1.0‰; (36)Cl/Cl=1 811 (±136) × 10(-15)), and urinary perchlorate from the Taltal, Chile region is similar to natural perchlorate in nitrate salt deposits from the Atacama Desert of northern Chile (δ(37)Cl=-11.0±1.0‰; (36)Cl/Cl=254 (±40) × 10(-15)). Neither urinary perchlorate resembled the isotopic pattern found in synthetic perchlorate. These results indicate that natural perchlorate of regional provenance is the dominant exposure source for the two sample populations, and that chlorine isotope ratios provide a robust tool for elucidating perchlorate exposure pathways.

The formation of Al (oxy)hydroxide on the basal surface of muscovite mica was investigated to understand how the structure of the substrate controls the nucleation and growth of secondary phases. Atomic force microscopy images showed that solid phases nucleated on the surface initially as two-dimensional islands that were ≤10 Å in height and ≤200 Å in diameter after 16-50 h of reaction in a 100 μM AlCl3 solution at pH 4.2 at room temperature. High-resolution X-ray reflectivity data indicated that these islands were gibbsite layers whose basic unit is composed of a plane of Al ions octahedrally coordinated to oxygen or hydroxyl groups. The formation of gibbsite layers is likely favored because of the structural similarity between its basal plane and the underlying mica surface. After 700-2000 h of reaction, a thicker and continuous film had formed on top of the initial gibbsite layers. X-ray diffraction data showed that this film was composed of diaspore that grew predominantly with its [040] and [140] crystallographic directions oriented along the muscovite [001] direction. These results show the structural characteristics of the muscovite (001) and Al (oxy)hydroxide film interface where presumed epitaxy had facilitated nucleation of metastable gibbsite layers which acted as a structural anchor for the subsequent growth of thermodynamically stable diaspore grown from a mildly acidic and Al-rich solution.

Previously unreported natural and synthetic organo-bromine compounds (NSOBCs) have been found to contribute more than 99% of total organic bromine (TOB) in environmental matrices. We recently developed a novel untargeted method (data-independent precursor isolation and characteristic fragment, DIPIC-Frag) and identified ∼2000 NSOBCs in two sediments from Lake Michigan. In this study, this method was used to investigate the distributions of these NSOBCs in 23 surficial samples and 24 segments of a sediment core from Lake Michigan. NSOBCs were detected in all 23 surficial samples and exhibited 10- to 100-fold variations in peak abundance among locations. The pattern of distributions of NSOBCs was correlated with depth of the water column (r(2) = 0.61, p < 0.001). Hierarchical cluster analysis showed that sediments in close proximity exhibited similar profiles of NSOBCs. Distributions of NSOBCs in 24 segments of a sediment core dated from 1766 to 2008 were investigated, and samples from similar depths exhibited similar profiles of NSOBCs. NSOBCs were grouped into four clusters (soft-cluster analysis) with different temporal trends of abundances. 515 and 768 of the NSOBCs were grouped into cluster 1 and cluster 3 with increasing temporal trends, especially since 1950, indicating that abundances of these compounds might have been affected by human activities.

The interface between minerals and aqueous solutions hosts globally important biogeochemical processes such as the growth and dissolution of carbonate minerals. Understanding such processes requires spatially and temporally resolved observations and experimental controls that precisely manipulate the interfacial thermodynamic state. Using the intense radiation fields of a focused synchrotron x-ray beam, we drove dissolution at the calcite/water interface and simultaneously probed the dynamics of the propagating reaction fronts using surface x-ray microscopy. Evolving surface structures were controlled by the time-dependent solution composition, as characterized by a kinetic reaction model. At extreme disequilibria, we observed the onset of reaction front instabilities with velocities of > 30 nanometers per second. The observed (36)Cl isotopic abundance in Great Lakes water decreases from west to east, with the highest (36)Cl/Cl ratio of 1332 × 10(-15) in Lake Superior and the lowest (36)Cl/Cl ratio of 151 × 10(-15) in Lake Erie, whereas the (36)Cl concentration ((36)Cl atoms/L) is lowest in Lake Superior and higher in the other Great Lakes. The (36)Cl concentration in Lake Superior is much higher than expected from normal atmospheric deposition over the basin, consistent with deposition of nuclear bomb-produced (36)Cl during 1952-1964. A conservative mass-balance model constrained by hydrological parameters and available (36)Cl fluence measurements predicts the (36)Cl abundances in the Great Lakes from 1945 to 2015, in excellent agreement with available data for Lakes Superior, Michigan, and Huron, but the model underestimates (36)Cl abundances for Lakes Erie and Ontario. However, assuming that (36)Cl demonstrates non-conservative behavior and is significantly retained in the drainage basins, a model incorporating a delayed input parameter successfully predicts observed (36)Cl concentrations in all of the Great Lakes., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Previously unknown halogenated compounds were detected during the analysis of halogenated flame retardants in two sediment cores collected from Lake Michigan. Gas chromatography coupled with high- or low-resolution mass spectrometry (MS) was used to determine the chemical structures for a total of 15 novel polyhalogenated carbazoles (PHCs) with the general molecular formula C12H9-x-y-zNClxBryIz. On the basis of the mass spectra generated by electron impact (EI) and electron capture negative ionization (ECNI) MS, eight PHCs were tentatively identified as polybrominated carbazoles, while the others were mixed halogenated carbazoles containing, in addition to bromine, either chlorine or iodine or both. Patterns of halogen substitution of PHCs included Br2 to Br5, ClBr2, ClBr3, ClBr4, ClBr3I, Br4I, and Br3I2. 3,6-Dibromocarbazole and 1,3,6,8-tetrabromocarbazole were also found among the PHCs. Profiles of the concentration versus depth of sediment at the two sites showed various patterns among polybrominated carbazoles. The abundance of mixed halogenated carbazoles peaked at depths of 12-16 cm, remained at relatively constant levels in deeper sediment, but declined markedly in more recently deposited sediments. This is the first study discovering the seven mixed halogenated carbazoles in the environment. Detailed methods for their detection and identification are provided.

Total fluorine (TF), extractable organic fluorine (EOF) and poly- and per-fluorinated compounds (PFCs) were measured in eight dated cores of sediment taken along with 27 surface sediments from Lake Michigan in 2010. Based on rates of sedimentation, total concentrations of PFCs (∑PFCs) reached a maximum in the later 1990s and early 2000s. This result is consistent with rapid changes in production and subsequent sedimentation. Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) are still the predominant PFCs in the cores, but in surface sediments, concentrations of perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) and perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) are now occurring at concentrations comparable to those of PFOS and PFOA. This observation is consistent with shifts in patterns of production and use in the US and Canada. Concentrations of TF in sediments were greater than those of EOF. Perchlorate is a persistent and mobile contaminant in the environment with both natural and anthropogenic sources. Stable isotope ratios of oxygen (δ(18)O, Δ(17)O) and chlorine (δ(37)Cl) along with the abundance of the radioactive isotope (36)Cl were used to trace perchlorate sources and behavior in the Laurentian Great Lakes. These lakes were selected for study as a likely repository of recent atmospheric perchlorate deposition. Perchlorate concentrations in the Great Lakes range from 0.05 to 0.13 μg per liter. δ(37)Cl values of perchlorate from the Great Lakes range from +3.0‰ (Lake Ontario) to +4.0‰ (Lake Superior), whereas δ(18)O values range from -4.1‰ (Lake Superior) to +4.0‰ (Lake Erie). Great Lakes perchlorate has mass-independent oxygen isotopic variations with positive Δ(17)O values (+1.6‰ to +2.7‰) divided into two distinct groups: Lake Superior (+2.7‰) and the other four lakes (∼+1.7‰). The stable isotopic results indicate that perchlorate in the Great Lakes is dominantly of natural origin, having isotopic composition resembling that measured for indigenous perchlorate from preindustrial groundwaters of the western USA. The (36)Cl/Cl ratio of perchlorate varies widely from 7.4 × 10(-12) (Lake Ontario) to 6.7 × 10(-11) (Lake Superior). These (36)ClO4(-) abundances are consistent with an atmospheric origin of perchlorate in the Great Lakes. The relatively high (36)ClO4(-) abundances in the larger lakes (Lakes Superior and Michigan) could be explained by the presence of (36)Cl-enriched perchlorate deposited during the period of elevated atmospheric (36)Cl activity following thermonuclear bomb tests in the Pacific Ocean.

Lead (Pb) is a common environmental pollutant, and its transport in surface waters and groundwater is controlled in part by sorption and precipitation reactions at mineral surfaces. Using in situ specular and resonant anomalous X-ray reflectivity measurements, we investigated the interaction of the calcite (104) surface with a dilute Pb- and EDTA-bearing solution that is slightly undersaturated with respect to calcite. The X-ray results reveal Pb coherently substituting for Ca in the near-surface layers of strained calcite with Pb/(Pb + Ca) atom fractions as high as 0.28 in the outermost layer. The larger ionic radius of Pb(2+) relative to Ca(2+) is accommodated in calcite by vertical displacements of Pb relative to the Ca site. In situ atomic force microscopy images obtained during the reaction suggest that Pb incorporation below the surface occurs after initial dissolution followed by regrowth of a strained epitaxial Pb-rich calcite solid-solution at the calcite (104)-water interface. This process could produce a widespread host phase for Pb in groundwater aquifers and soil pore fluids.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in New Mexico is the first geologic repository for disposal of transuranic nuclear waste from defense-related programs of the US Department of Energy. It is constructed within halite beds of the Permian-age Salado Formation. The Culebra Dolomite, confined within Rustler Formation evaporites overlying the Salado Formation, is a potential pathway for radionuclide transport from the repository to the accessible environment in the human-disturbed repository scenario. Although extensive subsurface characterization and numerical flow modeling of groundwater has been done in the vicinity of the WIPP, few studies have used natural isotopic tracers to validate the flow models and to better understand solute transport at this site. The advent of Atom-Trap Trace Analysis (ATTA) has enabled routine measurement of cosmogenic (81)Kr (half-life 229,000 yr), a near-ideal tracer for long-term groundwater transport. We measured (81)Kr in saline groundwater sampled from two Culebra Dolomite monitoring wells near the WIPP site, and compared (81)Kr model ages with reverse particle-tracking results of well-calibrated flow models. The (81)Kr model ages are ~130,000 and ~330,000 yr for high-transmissivity and low-transmissivity portions of the formation, respectively. Compared with flow model results which indicate a relatively young mean hydraulic age (~32,000 yr), the (81)Kr model ages imply substantial physical attenuation of conservative solutes in the Culebra Dolomite and provide limits on the effective diffusivity of contaminants into the confining aquitards., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V.
