Search

We present a re-discovery of G278.94+1.35 as possibly one of the largest known Galactic supernova remnants (SNR) - that we name Diprotodon. While previously established as a Galactic SNR, Diprotodon is visible in our new EMU and GLEAM radio continuum images at an angular size of 3.33x3.23 deg, much larger than previously measured. At the previously suggested distance of 2.7 kpc, this implies a diameter of 157x152 pc. This size would qualify Diprotodon as the largest known SNR and pushes our estimates of SNR sizes to the upper limits. We investigate the environment in which the SNR is located and examine various scenarios that might explain such a large and relatively bright SNR appearance. We find that Diprotodon is most likely at a much closer distance of $\sim$1 kpc, implying its diameter is 58x56 pc and it is in the radiative evolutionary phase. We also present a new Fermi-LAT data analysis that confirms the angular extent of the SNR in gamma-rays. The origin of the high-energy emission remains somewhat puzzling, and the scenarios we explore reveal new puzzles, given this unexpected and unique observation of a seemingly evolved SNR having a hard GeV spectrum with no breaks. We explore both leptonic and hadronic scenarios, as well as the possibility that the high-energy emission arises from the leftover particle population of a historic pulsar wind nebula., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, 1 table. We investigate the unusual H$\alpha$ features found towards the Scutum Supershell via recent arc-minute and arc-second resolution imaging. These multi-degree features resemble a long central spine ending in a bow-shock morphology. We performed a multi-wavelength study in [SII] optical, radio continuum, infrared continuum, HI, CO, X-ray and gamma-ray emissions. Interestingly, we found the Galactic worm GW16.9$-$3.8 HI feature appears within the Scutum Supershell, and likely influences the spine morphology. Furthermore, the rightmost edge of the bow-shock H$\alpha$ emission overlaps with [S II] line emission, 4.85 GHz radio, and both 60$\mu$m and 100$\mu$m infrared continuum emissions, suggesting some potential for excitation by shock heating. We estimated the photo-ionisation from O-type and B-type stars in the region (including those from the OB associations Ser OB1B, Ser OB2 and Sct OB3) and found that this mechanism could supply the excitation to account for the observed H$\alpha$ luminosity of the spine and bow-shock of $\sim$1e36 - 2e36 erg/s (d/2.5 kpc)$^2$. Recent MHD simulations by Drozdov et al. (2022) demonstrate the potential for supernova events to drive outflow and bow-shock types of features of the same energetic nature and physical scale as the H$\alpha$ emission we observe here. While this clearly requires many supernova events over time, we speculate that one contributing event could have come from the presumably energetic supernova (hypernova) birth of the magnetar tentatively identified in the X-ray binary LS 5039., Comment: Accepted to be published by Astronomical Society of Australia (PASA)

We present two new radio continuum images from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) survey in the direction of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). These images are part of the Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) Early Science Project (ESP) survey of the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds. The two new source lists produced from these images contain radio continuum sources observed at 960 MHz (4489 sources) and 1320 MHz (5954 sources) with a bandwidth of 192 MHz and beam sizes of 30.0"x30.0" and 16.3"x15.1", respectively. The median Root Mean Squared (RMS) noise values are 186$\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ (960 MHz) and 165$\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ (1320 MHz). To create point source catalogues, we use these two source lists, together with the previously published Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST) and the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) point source catalogues to estimate spectral indices for the whole population of radio point sources found in the survey region. Combining our ASKAP catalogues with these radio continuum surveys, we found 7736 point-like sources in common over an area of 30 deg$^2$. In addition, we report the detection of two new, low surface brightness supernova remnant candidates in the SMC. The high sensitivity of the new ASKAP ESP survey also enabled us to detect the bright end of the SMC planetary nebula sample, with 22 out of 102 optically known planetary nebulae showing point-like radio continuum emission. Aims: We present a comprehensive study of the supernova remnant (SNR) population of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We measure multiwavelength properties of the SMC SNRs and compare them to those of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) population. Methods: This study combines the large dataset of XMM-Newton observations of the SMC, archival and recent radio continuum observations, an optical line emission survey, and new optical spectroscopic observations. We can thus build a complete and clean sample of 19 confirmed and 4 candidate SNRs. The homogeneous X-ray spectral analysis allows to search for SN ejecta and Fe K line emission, and to measure interstellar medium (ISM) abundances. We estimate the ratio of core-collapse to type Ia supernova rates of the SMC based on the X-ray properties and the local stellar environment of each SNR. Results : After the removal of unconfirmed or misclassified objects, and the addition of two newly confirmed SNRs based on multi-wavelength features, we present a final list of 21 confirmed SNRs and 2 candidates. While no Fe K line is detected even for the brightest and youngest SNR, we find X-ray evidence of SN ejecta in 11 SNRs. We estimate a ratio of 4.7$_{-1.9} ^{+0.6}$ core-collapse supernova to every type Ia SN, three times higher than in the LMC. The difference can be ascribed to the absence of the enhanced star formation episode in the SMC, which occurred in the LMC 0.5-1.5 Gyr ago. The hot-gas abundances of O, Ne, Mg, and Fe are 0.1-0.2 times solar. Their ratios with respect to SMC stellar abundances reflect the effects of dust depletion and partial dust destruction in SNR shocks. A combination of archival multi-frequency radio observations with narrow-band HAlpha optical imagery and new confirmatory optical spectroscopy have shown that candidate supernova remnant G6.31+0.54 can now be confirmed as part of a Galactic supernova remnant (SNR). It has non-thermal emission, an optical emission line spectrum displaying shock excitation and standard SNR line ratios, fine filamentary structures in HAlpha typical of optical remnants and closely overlapping radio and optical footprints. An X-ray ROSAT source 1RXS J175752.1-231105 was also found that matches the radio and optical emission though a definite association is not proven. Nevertheless, taken together, all these observed properties point to a clear SNR identification for this source. We provide a rough estimate for the kinematic distance to G6.31+0.54 of ~4.5kpc. The detected optical filaments are some ~10arcminutes in extent (or about 13 pc at the assumed distance). However, as only a partial arcuate structure of the SNR can be seen (and not a full shell) the full angular extent of the SNR is unclear. Hence the physical extent of the observed partial shell is also difficult to estimate. If we assume an approximately circular shell then a conservative fit to the optical arc shaped filaments gives an angular diameter of ~20 arcminutes corresponding to a physical diameter of ~26 pc that shows this to be an evolved remnant., Comment: Accepted for publishing in MNRAS 8 pages, 8 figures

Optical vortices are currently one of the most intensively studied topics in optics. These light beams, which carry orbital angular momentum (OAM), have been successfully utilized in the visible and infrared in a wide variety of applications. Moving to shorter wavelengths may open up completely new research directions in the areas of optical physics and material characterization. Here, we report on the generation of extreme-ultraviolet optical vortices with femtosecond duration carrying a controllable amount of OAM. From a basic physics viewpoint, our results help to resolve key questions such as the conservation of angular momentum in highly-nonlinear light-matter interactions, and the disentanglement and independent control of the intrinsic and extrinsic components of the photon's angular momentum at short-wavelengths. The methods developed here will allow testing some of the recently proposed concepts such as OAM-induced dichroism, magnetic switching in organic molecules, and violation of dipolar selection rules in atoms.

We present the first results of our search for new, extended Planetary Nebulae (PNe) based on careful, systematic, visual scrutiny of the imaging data from the INT Photometric H-alpha Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane (IPHAS). The newly uncovered PNe will help to improve the census of this important population of Galactic objects that serve as key windows into the late stage evolution of low to intermediate mass stars. They will also facilitate study of the faint end of the ensemble Galactic PN luminosity function. The sensitivity and coverage of IPHAS allows PNe to be found in regions of greater extinction in the Galactic Plane and/or those PNe in a more advanced evolutionary state and at larger distances compared to the general Galactic PN population. Using a set of newly revised optical diagnostic diagrams in combination with access to a powerful, new, multi-wavelength imaging database, we have identified 159 true, likely and possible PNe for this first catalogue release. The ability of IPHAS to unveil PNe at low Galactic latitudes and towards the Galactic Anticenter, compared to previous surveys, makes this survey an ideal tool to contribute to the improvement of our knowledge of the whole Galactic PN population, Comment: 58 pages including the main article, data and image catalogues, Submitted to MNRAS

We present a detailed radio, X-ray and optical study of a newly discovered Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) supernova remnant (SNR) which we denote MCSNR J0508-6902. Observations from the Australian Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and the $\textit{XMM-Newton}$ X-ray observatory are complemented by deep H$\alpha$ images and Anglo Australian Telescope AAOmega spectroscopic data to study the SNR shell and its shock-ionisation. Archival data at other wavelengths are also examined. The remnant follows a filled-in shell type morphology in the radio-continuum and has a size of $\sim$74 pc $\times$ 57 pc at the LMC distance. The X-ray emission exhibits a faint soft shell morphology with Fe-rich gas in its interior $-$ indicative of a Type Ia origin. The remnant appears to be mostly dissipated at higher radio-continuum frequencies leaving only the south-eastern limb fully detectable while in the optical it is the western side of the SNR shell that is clearly detected. The best-fit temperature to the shell X-ray emission ($kT = 0.41^{+0.05}_{-0.06}$ keV) is consistent with other large LMC SNRs. We determined an O/Fe ratio of $<21$ and an Fe mass of 0.5-1.8$~M_{\odot}$ in the interior of the remnant, both of which are consistent with the Type Ia scenario. We find an equipartition magnetic field for the remnant of $\sim$28 $\mu$G, a value typical of older SNRs and consistent with other analyses which also infer an older remnant.

We present a detailed study of Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations of a newly discovered Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) supernova remnant (SNR), SNR J0533-7202. This object follows a horseshoe morphology, with a size 37 pc x 28 pc (1-pc uncertainty in each direction). It exhibits a radio spectrum with the intrinsic synchrotron spectral index of alpha= -0.47+-0.06 between 73 and 6 cm. We report detections of regions showing moderately high fractional polarisation at 6 cm, with a peak value of 36+-6% and a mean fractional polarisation of 12+-7%. We also estimate an average rotation measure across the remnant of -591 rad m^-2. The current lack of deep X-ray observation precludes any conclusion about high-energy emission from the remnant. As part of a systematic search programme of a 10-degree wide strip of the Northern Galactic plane we present preliminary evidence for the discovery of four (and possibly five) new supernova remnants (SNRs). The pilot search area covered the 19-20 hour right ascension zone sampling from +20 to +55 degrees in declination using binned mosaic images from the INT Photometric H-alpha Survey (IPHAS). The optical identification of the candidate SNRs was based mainly on their filamentary and arc-like emission morphologies, their apparently coherent, even if fractured structure and clear disconnection from any diffuse neighbouring HII region type nebulosity. Follow-up optical spectroscopy was undertaken, sampling carefully across prominent features of these faint sources. The resulting spectra revealed typical emission line ratios for shock excited nebulae which are characteristic of SNRs, which, along with the latest diagnostic diagrams, strongly support the likely SNR nature of these sources: G038.7-1.3 (IPHASX J190640.5+042819); G067.6+0.9 (IPHASX J195744.9+305306); G066.0-0.0 (IPHASX J195749.2+290259) and G065.8-0.5 (IPHASX J195920.4+283740). A fifth possible younger, higher density nebula SNR candidate, G067.8+0.5 (IPHASX J200002.4+305035) was discovered about 5 arcmins to the west of IPHASX J195744.9+305306, and warrants further study. A multi-wavelength cross-check from available archived data in the regions of these candidates was also performed with a focus on possible radio counterparts., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures. We have conducted a detailed multi-wavelength study of the peculiar nebula Abell 48 and its central star. We classify the nucleus as a helium-rich, hydrogen-deficient star of type [WN4-5]. The evidence for either a massive WN or a low-mass [WN] interpretation is critically examined, and we firmly conclude that Abell 48 is a planetary nebula (PN) around an evolved low-mass star, rather than a Population I ejecta nebula. Importantly, the surrounding nebula has a morphology typical of PNe, and is not enriched in nitrogen, and thus not the `peeled atmosphere' of a massive star. We estimate a distance of 1.6 kpc and a reddening, E(B-V) = 1.90 mag, the latter value clearly showing the nebula lies on the near side of the Galactic bar, and cannot be a massive WN star. The ionized mass (~0.3 M_Sun) and electron density (700 cm^-3) are typical of middle-aged PNe. The observed stellar spectrum was compared to a grid of models from the Potsdam Wolf-Rayet (PoWR) grid. The best fit temperature is 71 kK, and the atmospheric composition is dominated by helium with an upper limit on the hydrogen abundance of 10 per cent. Our results are in very good agreement with the recent study of Todt et al., who determined a hydrogen fraction of 10 per cent and an unusually large nitrogen fraction of ~5 per cent. This fraction is higher than any other low-mass H-deficient star, and is not readily explained by current post-AGB models. We give a discussion of the implications of this discovery for the late-stage evolution of intermediate-mass stars. There is now tentative evidence for two distinct helium-dominated post-AGB lineages, separate to the helium and carbon dominated surface compositions produced by a late thermal pulse. We have conducted a multi-wavelength study of the planetary nebula Abell 48 and give a revised classification of its nucleus as a hydrogen-deficient star of type [WN4]. The surrounding nebula has a morphology typical of PNe and importantly, is not enriched in nitrogen, and thus not the 'peeled atmosphere' of a massive star. Indeed, no WN4 star is known to be surrounded by such a compact nebula. The ionized mass of the nebula is also a powerful discriminant between the low-mass PN and high-mass WR ejecta interpretations. The ionized mass would be impossibly high if a distance corresponding to a Pop I star was adopted, but at a distance of 2 kpc, the mass is quite typical of moderately evolved PNe. At this distance, the ionizing star then has a luminosity of ~5000 Lsolar, again rather typical for a PN central star. We present a study of new Australian Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations of supernova remnant, SNR J0536-6735. This remnant appears to follow a shell morphology with a diameter of D=36x29 pc (with 1 pc uncertainty in each direction). There is an embedded Hii region on the northern limb of the remnant which made various analysis and measurements (such as flux density, spectral index and polarisation) difficult. The radio-continuum emission followed the same structure as the optical emission, allowing for extent and flux density estimates at 20 cm. We estimate a surface brightness for the SNR at 1 GHz of 2.55x10^-21 W m^-2 Hz^-1 sr^-1. Also, we detect a distinctive radio-continuum point source which confirms the previous suggestion of this remnant being associated with a pulsar wind nebulae (PWN). The tail of this remnant isn't seen in the radio-continuum images and is only seen in the optical and X-ray images., Comment: 10 pages 4 figures, accepted for publication in SAJ

We report the ATCA and ROSAT detection of Supernova Remnant (SNR) J0529--6653 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) which is positioned in the projected vicinity of the known radio pulsar PSR B0529-66. In the radio-continuum frequencies, this LMC object follows a typical SNR structure of a shell morphology with brightened regions in the south-west. It exhibits an almost circular shape of D=33 x 31 pc (1 pc uncertainty in each direction) and radio spectral index of alpha=-0.68$+-$0.03 - typical for mid-age SNRs. We also report detection of polarised regions with a peak value of 17+-7% at 6 cm. An investigation of ROSAT images produced from merged PSPC data reveals the presence of extended X-ray emission coincident with the radio emission of the SNR. In X-rays, the brightest part is in the north-east. We discuss various scenarios in regards to the SNR-PSR association with emphasis on the large age difference, lack of a pulsar trail and no prominent point-like radio or X-ray source., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

During a detailed search for optical counterparts of known Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) using the Anglo Australian Observatory/United Kingdom Schmidt Telescope (AAO/UKST) HAlpha survey of the southern Galactic plane we have found characteristic optical HAlpha filaments and associated emission in the area of SNR G213.0-0.6. Although this remnant was previously detected in the radio as a non-thermal source, we also confirm emission at 4850 MHz in the Parkes-MIT-NRAO (PMN) survey and at 1400 MHz in the NRAO/VLA Sky Survey (NVSS). There is an excellent match in morphological structure between the optical (HAlpha) and radio emission. We subsequently obtained optical spectroscopy of selected HAlpha filaments using the South African Astronomical Observatory 1.9-m telescope which confirmed shock excitation typical of supernova remnants. Our discovery of HAlpha emission and the positional match with several radio frequency maps led us to reassign G213.0-0.6 as G213.3-0.4 as these co-ordinates more accurately reflect the actual centre of the SNR shell and hence the most probable place of the original supernova explosion. Support for this new SNR ID comes from the fact that the X-ray source 1RXS J065049.7-003220 is situated in the centre of this new remnant and could be connected with the supernova explosion., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publishing in MNRAS

We report on new Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) supernova remnant (SNR) J0550-6823 (DEM L328). This object is a typical horseshoe SNR with a diameter of 373" x 282" +- 4" (90 x 68 +- 1), making it one of the largest known SNRs in the Local Group. We estimate a relatively steep radio spectral index of alpha = -0.79 +- 0.27. However, its stronger than expected polarisation of 50% +- 10% is atypical for older and more evolved SNRs. We present the third data release of the RAdial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) which is the first milestone of the RAVE project, releasing the full pilot survey. The catalog contains 83,072 radial velocity measurements for 77,461 stars in the southern celestial hemisphere, as well as stellar parameters for 39,833 stars. This paper describes the content of the new release, the new processing pipeline, as well as an updated calibration for the metallicity based upon the observation of additional standard stars. During detailed searches for new Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Anglo Australian Observatory/United Kingdom Schmidt Telescope (AAO/UKST) HAlpha survey of the southern Galactic plane, we also uncovered, for the first time, possible associated HAlpha emission in the vicinity of about 24 known Galactic SNRs previously known solely from radio or X-ray observations.The possible optical counterparts to these known SNR were detected due to the 1 arcsecond resolution and 5 Rayleigh sensitivity of this HAlpha survey. The newly discovered emission frequently exhibits the typical filamentary form of other optically detected SNRs although sometimes the HAlpha emission clouds or fragmented filaments largely inside an SNR extend over the radio border. It is true that superposition of general diffuse and extended Galactic emission in the region of these remnants is a complicating factor, but for many optical candidates the HAlpha emission provides an excellent morphological and positional match to the observed radio emission so that an association seems clear. We have already published HAlpha images and confirmatory spectral observations for several of the best optical counterparts to known SNRs but for completeness and convenience we include them in our complete catalogue of previously known radio detected SNRs for which we have now uncovered HAlpha optical emission. For better visualisation of the optical emissions from these faint supernova remnants and to enhance some low surface-brightness features we also present quotient images of the HAlpha data divided by the accompanying broad-band short red (SR) data. Out of 274 Galactic SNRs currently catalogued and detected in the radio only ~20 had previous optical counterparts. We present narrow band AAO/UKST HAlpha images and medium and low resolution optical spectra of a nebula shell putatively associated with the Wolf-Rayet star WR 60. We also present the first identification of this shell in the radio regime at 843 MHz and at 4850 MHz from the Sydney University Molonglo Sky Survey (SUMSS), and from the Parkes-MIT-NRAO (PMN) survey respectively. This radio emission closely follows the optical emission. The optical spectra from the shell exhibits the typical shock excitation signatures sometimes seen in Wolf-Rayet stellar ejecta but also common to supernova remnants. A key finding however, is that the WR 60 star, is not, in fact, anywhere near the geometrical centre of the putative arcuate nebula ejecta as had been previously stated. This was due to an erroneous positional identification for the star in the literature which we now correct. This new identification calls into serious question any association of the nebula with WR 60 as such nebula are usually quite well centred on the WR stars themselves. We now propose that this fact combined with our new optical spectra, deeper HAlpha imaging and newly identified radio structures actually imply that the WR 60 nebula should be reclassified as an unassociated new supernova remnant which we designate G310.5+0.8., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, Accepted for publishing in ApSS

During searches for new optical Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) in the high resolution, high sensitivity Anglo-Australian Observatory/United Kingdom Schmidt Telescope (AAO/UKST) HAlpha survey of the southern Galactic plane, we uncovered a variety of filamentary and more diffuse, extensive nebular structures in the vicinity of Wolf-Rayet (WR) star 48 (Theta Muscae), only some of which were previously recognised. We used the double-beam spectrograph of the Mount Stromlo and Siding Spring Observatory (MSSSO) 2.3-m to obtain low and mid resolution spectra of selected new filaments and structures in this region. Despite spectral similarities between the optical spectra of WR star shells and SNRs, a careful assessment of the new spectral and morphological evidence from our deep HAlpha imagery suggests that the putative shell of Theta Mus is not a WR shell at all, as has been commonly accepted, but is rather part of a more complex area of large-scale overlapping nebulosities in the general field of the WR star. The emission comprises a possible new optical supernova remnant and a likely series of complex H II regions. Finally, we present the intriguing detection of apparent collimated, directly opposing, ionized outflows close to Theta Mus itself which appears unique among such stars. This is the initial paper in a series presenting the first optical detections and subsequent follow-up spectroscopy of known Southern Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) previously discovered in the radio. These new detections come from the AAO/UKST HAlpha survey of the Southern Galactic plane which has opened up fresh opportunities to study Galactic remnants. Here we present the first optical imaging and follow-up spectra of Galactic SNR G279.0+1.1 where a series of 14 small-scale fragmented groups of HAlpha filaments have been discovered in a ~2.3 deg. area centred on G279.0+1.1. Individually they are somewhat inconspicuous but collectively they are completely enclosed within the overall radio contours of this known SNR. Three of these filamentary groupings are particularly prominent and optical spectra have been obtained across two of them. Their morphological structure and spectral characteristics are typical of optically detected SNR filaments. Very strong [S II] emission relative to H has been detected with [S II]/HAlpha 0.7 and 1.1, confirming strong, shock heated emission. This is sufficient to classify these filaments in the likely SNR domain and therefore indicating a direct connection with the radio remnant. Other typical SNR emission lines such as [O II] at 3727A, HBeta, [O III] at 4959 and 5007A, HAlpha and [N II] at 6548 and 6584A were also detected, lending strong support to an SNR origin of these optical filaments. The value and insights that these optical data can provide for known remnants are discussed along with their relevance to the Galactic nitrogen abundance. We present a catalogue of 18 new Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) uncovered in the optical regime as filamentary emissions and extended nebulosities on images of the Anglo Australian Observatory/United Kingdom Schmidt Telescope (AAO/UKST) HAlpha survey of the southern Galactic plane. Our follow-up spectral observations confirmed classical optical SNR emission lines for these 18 structures via detection of very strong [SII] at 6717 and 6731A relative to HAlpha ([SII]/HAlpha> 0.5). Morphologically, 10 of these remnants have coherent, extended arc or shell structures, while the remaining objects are more irregular in form but clearly filamentary in nature, typical of optically detected SNRs. In 11 cases there was a clear if not complete match between the optical and radio structures with H filamentary structures registered inside and along the presumed radio borders. Additionally, ROSAT X-ray sources were detected inside the optical/radio borders of 11 of these new remnants and 3 may have an associated pulsar. The multi-wavelength imaging data and spectroscopy together present strong evidence to confirm identification of 18 new, mostly senile Galactic SNRs. This includes G288.7-6.3, G315.1+2.7 and G332.5-5.6, identified only as possible remnants from preliminary radio observations. We present compelling evidence for confirmation of a Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) candidate, G332.5-5.6, based initially on identification of new, filamentary, optical emission line nebulosity seen in the arcsecond resolution images from the AAO/UKST HAlpha survey. The extant radio observations and X-ray data which we have independently re-reduced, together with new optical spectroscopy of the large-scale fragmented nebulosity, confirms the identification. Optical spectra, taken across five different, widely separated nebula regions of the remnant as seen on the HAlpha images, show average ratios of [NII]/HAlpha =2.42, [SII]/HAlpha = 2.10, and [SII] 6717/6731 = 1.23, as well as strong [OI] 6300, 6364A and [OII] 3727A emission. These ratios are firmly within those typical of SNRs. Here, we also present the radio-continuum detection of the SNR at 20/13cm from observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). Radio emission is also seen at 4850 MHz, in the PMN survey (Griffith and Wright 1993) and at 843 MHz from the SUMSS survey (Bock, Large and Sadler 1999). We estimate an angular diameter of ~30 arcmin and obtain an average radio spectral index of alpha = -0.6 +- 0.1 which indicates the non-thermal nature of G332.5-5.6. Fresh analysis of existing ROSAT X-ray data in the vicinity also confirms the existence of the SNR. The distance to G332.5-5.6 has been independently estimated by Reynoso and Green (2007) as 3.4 kpc based on measurements of the HI lambda21 cm line seen in absorption against the continuum emission. Our cruder estimates via assumptions on the height of the dust layer (3.1 kpc) and using the Sigma-D relation (4 kpc) are in good agreement., Comment: 14 pages, 18 figures. The Parkes-MIT-NRAO (PMN) radio survey has been used to generate a quasi all-sky study of Galactic Supernova Remnants (SNRs) at a common frequency of 4.85 GHz. We present flux densities estimated for the sample of 110 Southern Galactic SNRs (up to Dec = - 65 deg.) observed with the Parkes 64-m radio telescope and an additional sample of 54 from the Northern PMN (up to Dec = +64 deg.) survey undertaken with the Green Bank 43-m (20 SNRs) and 91-m (34 SNRs) radio telescopes. Out of this total sample of 164 selected SNRs (representing 71% of the 231 known SNRs in the Green catalogue) we consider 138 to provide reliable estimates of flux density and surface brightness distribution. This sub-sample represents those SNRs which fall within carefully chosen selection criteria which minimises the effects of the known problems in establishing reliable fluxes from the PMN survey data. Our selection criteria are based on a judicious restriction of source angular size and telescope beam together with careful evaluation of fluxes on a case by case basis. This gives confidence in the newly derived PMN fluxes when the selection criteria are respected. We find a sharp drop off in the flux densities for Galactic SNRs beyond 4 Jy and then a fairly flat distribution from 5-9 Jy, a slight decline and a further flat distribution from 9-20 Jy though the numbers of SNR in each Jy bin are low. We also re-visit the contentious Sigma-D relation to determine a new power law index for a sub-sample of shell type SNRs which yields beta= -2.2 +/- 0.6. This new evaluation of the Sigma-D relation, applied to the restricted sample, provides new distance estimates and their Galactic scale height distribution. We find a peak in the SNR distribution between 7-11 kpc with most restricted to +/- 100 pc Galactic scale height., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures. New narrow-band HAlpha imaging and subsequent optical spectra confirm G315.1+2.7, a previously identified candidate supernova remnant (SNR), as a bona-fide Galactic SNR. Present observations are based on independent discovery of filamentary optical emission nebulosity on images of the AAO/UKST HAlpha survey of the southern Galactic plane which were found to co-incide with existing multi-frequency radio detections. Separate medium and high dispersion spectra were taken across two locations of this 11 arcmin N-S aligned optical filament. The resulting spectral signatures were found to strongly confirm the SNR identification based on standard emission line ratio discriminators which characterise emission from shock heated gas. The average observed ratios of [SII]/HAlpha=1.13, [NII]/HAlpha=1.43 and [SII] 6717/6731=1.46, together with the simultaneous detection of [OII] at 3727A, [OIII] 5007A and [OI] 6300A, all point to an SNR origin of the observed optical emission. Careful scrutiny of the low-resolution but high sensitivity SHASSA HAlpha survey also revealed a low-level but distinct optical emission arc. This arc precisely correlates with the large, 2.5 degree, north-south angular extent of the proposed new SNR also seen as a fractured structure in the extant radio data. G315.1+2.7 was detected previously at 2400 and 4800 MHz and at 408 and 1420 MHz. We also identified associated radio emission at 843 MHz from the now publicly available SUMSS survey. On the basis of optical imaging and spectra and radio observations at five frequencies, we identify G315.1+2.7 as a new Galactic SNR. The large projected angular extent of the new remnant, together with the distance estimate of ~1.7 kpc and diameter of ~80pc, make G315.1+2.7 one of the largest remnants known., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures.
