Thin films of the spin-crossover (SCO) molecule Fe{[Me2Pyrz]3BH}2 (Fe-pyrz) were sublimed on Si/SiO2 and quartz substrates, and their properties investigated by X-ray absorption and photoemission spectroscopies, optical absorption, atomic force microscopy, and superconducting quantum interference device. Contrary to the previously studied Fe(phen)2(NCS)2, the films are not smooth but granular. The thin films qualitatively retain the typical SCO properties of the powder sample (SCO, thermal hysteresis, soft X-ray induced excited spin-state trapping, and light induced excited spin-state trapping) but present intriguing variations even in micrometer-thick films: the transition temperature decreases when the thickness is decreased, and the hysteresis is affected. We explain this behavior in the light of recent studies focusing on the role of surface energy in the thermodynamics of the spin transition in nano-structures. In the high-spin state at room temperature, the films have a large optical gap (~5 eV), decreasing at thickness below 50 nm, possibly due to film morphology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The design and the first experiments are described of a versatile cryogenic insert used for its electrical transport capabilities. The insert is designed for the cryomagnet installed on the DEIMOS beamline at the SOLEIL synchrotron dedicated to magnetic characterizations through X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements. This development was spurred by the multifunctional properties of novel materials such as multiferroics, in which, for example, the magnetic and electrical orders are intertwined and may be probed using XAS. The insert thus enables XAS to in situ probe this interplay. The implementation of redundant wiring and careful shielding also enables studies on operating electronic devices. Measurements on magnetic tunnel junctions illustrate the potential of the equipment toward XAS studies of in operando electronic devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The formation of an oroantral communication (OAC) or fistula (OAF) is a rare complication resulting from the presence of processes in the lateral parts of the maxilla or for iatrogenic reasons. The most common causes of OAC or OAF are tooth extraction with periapical lesions. The aims of this systematic review were to assess the use of platelet-derived preparations rich in growth factors in the treatment of OAC or OAF, to determine the success of treating the communication or fistula, as well as impact on postoperative complications and the course of healing. The study was performed following PRISMA guidelines (PROSPERO: CRD42024570758). The inclusion criteria were as follows: at least ten patients, the presence of oroantral communication or oroantral fistula, treatment with platelet-derived preparations rich in growth factors, and information regarding the response to treatment. In order to find relevant studies, international databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science Core Collection, MDPI, Wiley, and Cochrane Library were searched. The last search was performed on 31 August 2024. Seven articles were included in the systematic review. In total, platelet-derived preparations rich in growth factors were used in 164 patients. Only studies in which OAC was treated and with platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) met the inclusion criteria. Only PRF was used as the sole treatment method in three studies. When OAC is greater than 5 mm, platelet-derived preparations rich in growth factors should be considered adjuncts to treatment, not the sole treatment method. The success rate of OAC treatment was 90-100%. The use of blood products to close OAC may be an effective therapeutic alternative. Proper patient qualification and the use of an appropriate protocol are crucial. There is a need for future well-designed case-control or cohort studies as well as randomized controlled trials to provide the required level of evidence.

Objectives: The Scrotal and Penile Imaging Working Group (SPIWG) of the European Society of Urogenital Radiology (ESUR) aimed to produce recommendations on the role of the radiologist in the evaluation of male infertility focused on scrotal imaging., Methods: The authors independently performed an extensive literature Medline search and a review of the clinical practice and consensus opinion of experts in the field., Results: Scrotal ultrasound (US) is useful in investigating male infertility. US abnormalities related to abnormal sperm parameters (sperm concentration, total count, motility, and morphology) are low testicular volume (TV), testicular inhomogeneity (TI), cryptorchidism, testicular microlithiasis (TML), high-grade varicocele, bilateral absence of vas deferens, bilateral dilation and echotexture abnormalities of the epididymis. The proposed ESUR-SPIWG recommendations for imaging in the evaluation of male infertility are therefore: to measure TV; investigate TI; perform annual (US) follow-ups up to age 55 in men with a history of cryptorchidism/orchidopexy and/or in men with TML plus "additional risk factors" or with "starry sky" TML; perform scrotal/inguinal US in men with nonpalpable testis; perform scrotal US in men with abnormal sperm parameters to investigate lesions suggestive of tumors; evaluate varicocele in a standardized way; evaluate the presence or absence of vas deferens; investigate the epididymis to detect indirect signs suggesting obstruction and/or inflammation., Conclusions: The ESUR-SPIWG recommends investigating infertile men with scrotal US focusing on TV, inhomogeneity, localization, varicocele, vas deferens, and epididymal abnormalities. Background : Tooth infraocclusion is a process in which a completely or partially erupted tooth gradually moves away from the occlusal plane. Submerged teeth can lead to serious complications. Treating teeth with infraocclusion is very challenging. One of the procedures allowing for the replacement of a missing tooth is autotransplantation. The aim of this paper is to review the literature on teeth autotransplantation, supported by a case report involving the autotransplantation of a third mandibular molar into the site of an extracted infraoccluded first mandibular molar, as well as the utilization of advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF) alongside autogenous dentin grafts for bone tissue regeneration. Methods : A severely infraoccluded first permanent right mandibular molar was extracted and then ground to obtain the dentin graft. A-PRF clots (collected from the patient's peripheral blood) were added to the autogenous dentin graft, to create the A-PRF membrane. An atraumatic extraction of the lower left third molar was performed and then it was transplanted into the socket of tooth no. 46. Immediately after transplantation, tooth no. 38 was stabilized with orthodontic bracket splints for 3 months. The patient attended regular follow-up visits within 12 months. Results : After one year, the patient did not report any pain. In the clinical examination, the tooth and surrounding tissues did not show any signs of infection. However, radiographically, cervical inflammatory resorption, unchanged pulp canal dimensions, absent root growth, periapical radiolucency, and lack of apical and marginal healing were observed. Reconstruction of the bone defect was obtained and the alveolar ridge of the mandible was preserved. Due to poor stability of the tooth and severe resorption, the tooth needed to be extracted. Conclusions : This study is designed to critically evaluate the efficacy of autotransplantation, the application of growth factors, and the integration of autogenous dentin grafts in remedying dental deficiencies resulting from reinclusion. We aim to point out the possible causes of treatment failure.

Background: An accurate determination of the biological width and the relationship of the cemento-enamel junction with the border of the alveolar bone is crucial during a clinical crown-lengthening (CCL) procedure. The aim of this study was to present a technical note about the retraction techniques in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) prior to CCL, highlighting the significant enhancement in procedural accuracy and predictability that these techniques offer. Methods: Clinical and radiological examinations should be performed before a CCL procedure. It is necessary to determine the length of the tooth crowns, the periodontal pockets' depth, and the phenotype of the gingiva. The ideal CBCT examination should be performed with soft tissue retraction. This can be achieved using retractors or cotton rolls. Results: Retraction of the lips, cheeks, and tongue allows one to assess the marginal gingiva, the cemento-enamel junction, and the alveolar bone. A detailed plan of the CCL procedure, which involves retraction, ensures both the aesthetic appeal and the achievement of a newly defined gingival zenith, enhancing the overall visual harmony. Conclusions: Compared with conventional radiographic imaging, the soft tissue retraction maneuver in CBCT prior to CCL surgery offers an effective approach to the evaluation and diagnosis of soft and hard tissue. This is because of the detailed planning of the aesthetic CCL procedure. Such an approach leads to superior aesthetic outcomes in dentistry, contributing to the advancement of aesthetic dentistry through a harmonious blend of art and science.

Chronic odontogenic maxillary sinusitis (COMS), a prolonged inflammation of the maxillary sinus lasting over 12 weeks, is often a result of periapical lesions, marginal periodontitis, and complications like oro-antral communication (OAC) and fistula (OAF). OAC, commonly emerging post-teeth extraction in the lateral maxilla, lacks documented treatments using advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF). This study evaluates A-PRF's efficacy in treating COMS and immediately sealing extensive OAC. A case of a 28-year-old male with COMS linked to a periapical lesion and supernumerary molars is presented. Treatment involved extracting specific teeth while preserving adjacent ones and using A-PRF for immediate OAC closure. A-PRF, enriched with growth factors, was pivotal in healing, showcasing enhanced tissue regeneration, pain reduction, and faster recovery. The findings suggest A-PRF as an effective adjunct in treating extensive OAC and COMS, proposing its inclusion in standard treatment protocols. This study underscores A-PRF's potential in improving outcomes for patients with COMS and related complications.

The gradual movement of a tooth away from the occlusal plane is called infraocclusion or reinclusion. Reincluded teeth are most often deciduous molars, and permanent teeth are less frequently affected. Depending on the level of the infraocclusion, the severity of the disorder is classified as mild, moderate, or severe. The etiology of the phenomenon is not fully known. Tooth submerging can lead to serious complications, such as abnormal position of adjacent teeth, displacement of the bud of the permanent successor, shortening of the dental arch, or developmental disturbances of alveolar process. Early diagnosis of the tooth infraocclusion and regular monitoring of its progression help to avoid serious permanent sequelae. The treatment of reinclusion often involves only observation. However, in some cases, the therapeutic procedure requires interdisciplinary treatment by specialists from various fields of dentistry. This study presents current methods of diagnosis and treatment of patients with submerged teeth.

The two-dimensional electron system (2DES) located at the surface of strontium titanate (STO) and at several other STO-based interfaces has been an established platform for the study of novel physical phenomena since its discovery. Here we report how the interfacing of STO and tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) results in a charge transfer that depletes the number of free carriers at the STO surface, with a strong impact on its electronic structure. Our study paves the way for efficient tuning of the electronic properties, which promises novel applications in the framework of oxide/organic-based electronics.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to analyse the usefulness of core biopsy in the diagnosis of malignant neoplasms of the pancreas - sensitivity and accuracy of diagnosis, safety of the procedure, indication of factors that may increase the risk of complications after biopsy., Material and Methods: A retrospective analysis of data was performed in a group of 100 patients diagnosed with a focal lesion of the pancreas, qualified for a core biopsy., Results: The results are a sensitivity of 92%, a specificity of 100%, and an accuracy of 93.3%. The incidence of more severe complications according to the Clavien-Dindo classification was 1% (one case in the material studied). The results of the analysis were compared with the results of other authors, showing similar values for the sensitivity and specificity of the method and low rates of serious complications; it also seems that the tissue material obtained by core biopsy has higher diagnostic potential than that obtained by endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA), currently considered the method of choice. In addition, the costs of transabdominal biopsy and endoscopic biopsy were compared; the lower cost of the former may be an important economic issue when choosing the biopsy method., Conclusions: The results show core biopsy to be a sensitive, accurate, and safe method for obtaining the tissue necessary to plan treatment in patients with pancreatic cancer., Competing Interests: The authors report no conflict of interest., (© Pol J Radiol 2023.)

Irreversible electroporation (IRE) of locally advanced pancreatic cancer is an increasingly used method for unresectable pancreatic cancer that can be used in cytoreduction followed by surgical treatment and shows promising results in palliative care. IRE is an ablative technique where electric pulses cause damage to the cell membrane leading to apoptosis without the destruction of stroma. The application of IRE increases the concentration of hydrophobic regimens like bleomycin within the tumor, what could improve the effectiveness of treatment. This fusion of those two treatments is called electrochemotherapy. Continuous progress in the diagnostics and treatment of neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs), the emerging results of new clinical trials, and the new guidelines issued by medical societies have prompted experts from the Polish Network of Neuroendocrine Tumours to update the 2017 recommendations regarding the management of neuroendocrine neoplasms. This article presents the general recommendations for the management of NENs, resulting from the findings of the experts participating in the Fourth Round Table Conference, entitled "Polish Guidelines for the Diagnostics and Treatment of Neuroendocrine Neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract, Żelechów, June 2021". Drawing from the extensive experience of centres treating these cancers, we hope that we have managed to formulate the optimal method of treating patients with NENs, applying the latest reports and achievements in the field of medicine, which can be effectively implemented in our country. The respective parts of this work present the approach to the management of: NENs of the stomach and duodenum (including gastrinoma), pancreas, small intestine, and appendix, as well as large intestine.

Colorectal neuroendocrine neoplasm (CRNEN), especially rectal tumours, are diagnosed with increased frequency due to the widespread use of colonoscopy, including screening examinations. It is important to constantly update and promote the principles of optimal diagnostics and treatment of these neoplasms. Based on the latest literature and arrangements made at the working meeting of the Polish Network of Neuroendocrine Tumours (June 2021), this paper includes updated and supplemented data and guidelines for the management of CRNEN originally published in Endokrynologia Polska 2017; 68: 250-260.

Updated Polish recommendations for the management of patients with neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) of the small intestine (SINENs) and of the appendix (ANENs) are presented here. The small intestine, and especially the ileum, is one of the most common locations for these neoplasms. Most of them are well-differentiated and slow-growing tumours; uncommonly - neuroendocrine carcinomas. Their symptoms may be untypical and their diagnosis may be delayed or accidental. Najczęściej pierwszą manifestacją ANEN jest jego ostre zapalenie. Typical symptoms of carcinoid syndrome occur in approximately 20-30% of SINENs patients with distant metastases. In laboratory diagnostics the assessment of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid concentration is helpful in the diagnosis of carcinoid syndrome. The most commonly used imaging methods are ultrasound examination, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, colonoscopy and somatostatin receptor imaging. Histopathological examination is crucial for the proper diagnosis and treatment of patients with SINENs and ANENs. The treatment of choice is a surgical procedure, either radical or palliative. Long-acting somatostatin analogues (SSAs) are essential in the medical treatment of functional and non-functional SINENs. In patients with SINENs, at the stage dissemination with progression during SSAs treatment, with high expression of somatostatin receptors, radioisotope therapy should be considered first followed by targeted therapies - everolimus. After the exhaustion of the above available therapies, chemotherapy may be considered in selected cases. Recommendations for patient monitoring are also presented.

In this paper, we present the current guidelines for the diagnostics and management of pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (PanNENs) developed by Polish experts providing care for these patients in everyday clinical practice. In oncological diagnostics, in addition to biochemical tests, molecular identification with the use of NETest liquid biopsy and circulating microRNAs is gaining importance. Both anatomical and functional examinations (including new radiopharmaceuticals) are used in imaging diagnostics. Histopathological diagnosis along with immunohistochemical examination still constitute the basis for therapeutic decisions. Whenever possible, surgical procedure is the treatment of choice. Pharmacological management including biotherapy, radioisotope therapy, targeted molecular therapy and chemotherapy are important methods of systemic therapy. Treatment of PanNENs requires a multidisciplinary team of specialists in the field of neuroendocrine neoplasms.

After another meeting of experts of the Polish Network of Neuroendocrine Tumours, updated recommendations for the management of patients with gastric and duodenal neuroendocrine neoplasms, including gastrinoma, have been issued. As before, the epidemiology, pathogenesis and clinical symptoms of these neoplasms have been discussed, as well as the principles of diagnostic procedures, including biochemical and histopathological diagnostics and tumour localisation, highlighting the changes introduced in the recommendations. Updated principles of therapeutic management have also been presented, including endoscopic and surgical treatment, and the options of pharmacological and radioisotope treatment. The importance of monitoring patients with gastric and duodenal NENs, including gastrinoma, has also been emphasised.

Background: An odontogenic keratocyst is a lesion characterized by aggressive and infiltrative growth. The lesion is characterized by the existence of satellite microcysts (microtumours) and frequent recurrence (up to 30%). Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is a condition in which collagen production or its post-translational modifications are affected. Defects in connective tissues cause symptoms, which range from mild joint hypermobility to life-threatening complications., Case Presentation: We present an extremely rare case of an 11-year old girl with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and coexistence of multiple odontogenic keratocysts., Conclusions: This case shows mainly atypical or rare association between multiple odontogenic keratocysts and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

Background: The carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) measurement may be carried out proximally (pIMT) or distally (dIMT) in relation to the bulb of the common carotid artery which has significant implications on the results and correlation with risk factors. The aim of the study was to compare the pIMT and dIMT in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia confirmed by genetic testing (FH group) and patients with severe non-familial hypercholesterolemia, with negative results of genetic testing (NFH group) and to determine the correlation of results with traditional atherosclerotic risk factors and calcium scores., Methods: A total of 86 FH and 50 NFH patients underwent pIMT and dIMT measurements of both carotid arteries as well as computed tomography (CT) with coronary and thoracic aorta calcium scoring., Results: The meanpIMT of both right and left common carotid artery were significantly higher in patients with FH compared to the NFH group (meanpRIMT 0.721 ± 0.152 vs. 0.644 ± 0.156, p < 0.01, meanpLIMT 0.758 ± 0.173 vs. 0.670 ± 0.110, p < 0.01). Patient age, pre-treatment lowdensity lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels (LDLmax) at baseline and systolic blood pressure were independent predictors of pIMT increases in both carotid arteries. Smoking history, age and LDLmax were independent predictors of dIMT increase. There was a significant correlation between the calcium scores of the ascending aorta, coronary artery and aortic valve and all IMT parameters., Conclusions: The IMT measured proximally better between patients with familial and non-familial hypercholesterolemia. The association between IMT and traditional cardiovascular risk factors varies between measurement sites. IMT values correlate CT calcium scores in all patients with hypercholesterolaemia regardless of genetic etiology.
