Search

The persistence of the DAMA/LIBRA (DAMA) modulation over the past two decades has been a source of great contention within the dark matter community. The DAMA collaboration reports a persistent, modulating event rate within their setup of NaI(Tl) scintillating crystals at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) underground laboratory. A recent work alluded that this signal could have arisen due to an analysis artefact, caused by DAMA not accounting for time variation of decaying background radioisotopes in their analysis procedure. In this work, we examine in detail this 'induced modulation' effect, arguing that a number of aspects of the DAMA signal are incompatible with an induced modulation arising from decays of background isotopes over the lifetime of the experiment. Using a toy model of the DAMA/LIBRA experiment, we explore the induced modulation effect under different variations of the activities of the relevant isotopes - namely, $^3$H and $^{210}$Pb - highlighting the various inconsistencies between the resultant toy datasets and the DAMA signal. We stress the importance of the SABRE experiment, whose goal is to unambiguously test for the presence of such a modulating signal in an experiment using the same target material and comparable levels of background.

Single-step Coulomb excitation of $^{46,48,49,50}$Ti is presented. A complete set of $E2$ matrix elements for the quintuplet of states in $^{49}$Ti, centered on the $2^+$ core excitation, was measured for the first time. A total of nine $E2$ matrix elements are reported, four of which were previously unknown. $^{49}_{22}$Ti$_{27}$ shows a $20\%$ quenching in electric quadrupole transition strength as compared to its semi-magic $^{50}_{22}$Ti$_{28}$ neighbour. This $20\%$ quenching, while empirically unprecedented, can be explained with a remarkably simple two-state mixing model, which is also consistent with other ground-state properties such as the magnetic dipole moment and electric quadrupole moment. A connection to nucleon transfer data and the quenching of single-particle strength is also demonstrated. The simplicity of the $^{49}$Ti-$^{50}$Ti pair (i.e., approximate single-$j$ $0f_{7/2}$ valence space and isolation of yrast states from non-yrast states) provides a unique opportunity to disentangle otherwise competing effects in the ground-state properties of atomic nuclei, the emergence of collectivity, and the role of proton-neutron interactions., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted in Physics Letters B

The radiative branching ratio of the Hoyle state is crucial to estimate the triple-$\alpha$ reaction rate in stellar environments at medium temperatures. Knowledge of the $\gamma$-decay channel is critical as this is the dominant radiative decay channel for the Hoyle state. A recent study by Kib\'edi et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 182701 (2020)] has challenged our understanding of this astrophysically significant branching ratio and its constraints. The objective of this work was to perform a new measurement of the $\gamma$-decay branching ratio of the Hoyle state to deduce the radiative branching ratio of the Hoyle state. An additional objective was to independently verify aspects of the aforementioned measurement conducted by Kib\'edi et al. For the main experiment of this work, the Hoyle state was populated by the $^{12}\textrm{C}(p,p')$ reaction at 10.8 MeV at the Oslo Cyclotron Laboratory. The $\gamma$-decay branching ratio was deduced through triple-coincidence events, each consisting of a proton ejectile corresponding to the Hoyle state, and the subsequent $\gamma$-ray cascade. In the main experiment of this work, a $\gamma$-decay branching ratio of the Hoyle state of $\Gamma_{\gamma}/\Gamma=4.0(4)\times 10^{-4}$ was determined, yielding a corresponding radiative branching ratio of $\Gamma_{\textrm{rad}}/\Gamma=4.1(4) \times 10^{-4}$, which is in agreement with several recent studies, as well as the previously adopted ENSDF average of $\Gamma_{\textrm{rad}}/\Gamma=4.16(11)\times 10^{-4}$. Aspects of the analysis performed by Kib\'edi et al. were verified in this work and the source of discrepancy between the results of this work and that of Kib\'edi et al. could not be determined. Further independent and innovative studies for the radiative width of the Hoyle state will substantiate whether the discrepant result by Kib\'edi et al. should be excluded from future evaluations.

Any discovery of `new physics' in the neutrino sector first requires a precise prediction of the expected Standard Model cross section. Currently, Coherent Elastic neutrino-Nucleus Scattering (CEvNS) experiments are statistics limited. However, as new and future experiments scale up, it will be necessary to improve the theoretical predictions. Here we review the calculation of the CEvNS cross section in a consistent theory of hadronic currents and compute the relevant nuclear form factors using the nuclear shell model. The uncertainty on the form factors is explored by repeating the calculation for various shell model interactions and with Skyme-Hartree-Fock evaluations of the Weak-charge radii. We then refine the Standard Model predictions for the recent experimental results of the COHERENT experiment. We find that our cross sections are in good agreement with previous predictions, but with significantly smaller uncertainties - by up to a factor of 10. Near-future CEvNS experiments will meaningfully benefit from improved predictions through an increased sensitivity to new-physics signals., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figs (plus appendicies)

The $g$ factors of $11/2^-$ isomers in semimagic $^{109}$Sn and $^{111}$Sn (isomeric lifetimes $\tau = 2.9(3)$ ns and $\tau = 14.4(7)$ ns, respectively) were measured by an extension of the Time Differential Perturbed Angular Distribution technique, which uses \LaBr detectors and the hyperfine fields of a gadolinium host to achieve precise measurements in a new regime of short-lived isomers. The results, $g(11/2^-; {^{109}\textrm{Sn}}) = -0.186(8)$ and $g(11/2^-; {^{111}\textrm{Sn}}) = -0.214(4)$, are significantly lower in magnitude than those of the $11/2^-$ isomers in the heavier isotopes and depart from the value expected for a near pure neutron $h_{11/2}$ configuration. Broken-symmetry density functional theory calculations applied to the sequence of $11/2^-$ states reproduce the magnitude and location of this deviation. The $g(11/2^-)$ values are affected by shape core polarization; the odd $0h_{11/2}$ neutron couples to $J^{\pi}=2^+,4^+,6^+...$ configurations in the weakly-deformed effective core, causing a decrease in the $g$-factor magnitudes., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures. We propose a new Time Projection Chamber particle detector (TPC) to search for the existence of feebly-interacting bosons and to investigate the existence of the X17 boson, proposed by the ATOMKI group to explain anomalous results in the angular distributions of electron-positron pairs created in proton-induced nuclear reactions. Our design will provide 200 times greater sensitivity than ATOMKI and the program of research will also provide world-leading limits on feebly interacting bosons in the mass range of 5 - 25 MeV., Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures, 2 tables

Excited-state spectroscopy from the first Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) experiment is reported. A 24(2)-$\mu$s isomer was observed with the FRIB Decay Station initiator (FDSi) through a cascade of 224- and 401-keV $\gamma$ rays in coincidence with $^{32}\textrm{Na}$ nuclei. This is the only known microsecond isomer ($1{\text{ }\mu\text{s}}\leq T_{1/2} < 1\text{ ms}$) in the region. This nucleus is at the heart of the $N=20$ island of shape inversion and is at the crossroads of spherical shell-model, deformed shell-model, and ab initio theories. It can be represented as the coupling of a proton hole and neutron particle to $^{32}\textrm{Mg}$, $^{32}\textrm{Mg}+\pi^{-1} + \nu^{+1}$. This odd-odd coupling and isomer formation provides a sensitive measure of the underlying shape degrees of freedom of $^{32}\textrm{Mg}$, where the onset of spherical-to-deformed shape inversion begins with a low-lying deformed $2^+$ state at 885 keV and a low-lying shape-coexisting $0_2^+$ state at 1058 keV. We suggest two possible explanations for the 625-keV isomer in $^{32}$Na: a $6^-$ spherical shape isomer that decays by $E2$ or a $0^+$ deformed spin isomer that decays by $M2$. The only proposed observation of a discrete, hexacontatetrapole ($E6$) transition in nature occurs from the T$_{1/2}$ = 2.54(2)-minute decay of $^{53m}$Fe. However, there are conflicting claims concerning its $\gamma$-decay branching ratio, and a rigorous interrogation of $\gamma$-ray sum contributions is lacking. Experiments performed at the Australian Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility were used to study the decay of $^{53m}$Fe. For the first time, sum-coincidence contributions to the weak $E6$ and $M5$ decay branches have been firmly quantified using complementary experimental and computational methods. Agreement across the different approaches confirms the existence of the real $E6$ transition; the $M5$ branching ratio and transition rate have also been revised. Shell model calculations performed in the full $pf$ model space suggest that the effective proton charge for high-multipole, $E4$ and $E6$, transitions is quenched to approximately two-thirds of the collective $E2$ value. Correlations between nucleons may offer an explanation of this unexpected phenomenon, which is in stark contrast to the collective nature of lower-multipole, electric transitions observed in atomic nuclei., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Physical Review Letters

Non-relativistic effective field theory (NREFT) is one approach used for describing the interaction of WIMPs with ordinary matter. Among other factors, these interactions are expected to be affected by the structure of the atomic nuclei in the target. The sensitivity of the nuclear response components of the WIMP-nucleus scattering amplitude is investigated using shell model calculations for $^{19}$F and $^{nat}$Xe. Resulting integrated nuclear response values are shown to be sensitive to some specifics of the nuclear structure calculations., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

The collective structure of $^{106}$Cd is elucidated by multi-step Coulomb excitation of a 3.849 MeV/$A$ beam of $^{106}$Cd on a 1.1 mg/cm$^2$ $^{208}$Pb target using GRETINA-CHICO2 at ATLAS. Fourteen $E2$ matrix elements were obtained. The nucleus $^{106}$Cd is a prime example of emergent collectivity that possesses a simple structure: it is free of complexity caused by shape coexistence and has a small, but collectively active number of valence nucleons. This work follows in a long and currently active quest to answer the fundamental question of the origin of nuclear collectivity and deformation, notably in the cadmium isotopes. The results are discussed in terms of phenomenological models, the shell model, and Kumar-Cline sums of $E2$ matrix elements. The ${\langle 0_2^+ ||E2||2_1^+ \rangle}$ matrix element is determined for the first time, providing a total, converged measure of the electric quadrupole strength, $\langle Q^2 \rangle$, of the first-excited $2_1^+$ level relative to the $0_1^+$ ground state, which does not show an increase as expected of harmonic and anharmonic vibrations. Strong evidence for triaxial shapes in weakly collective nuclei is indicated; collective vibrations are excluded. This is contrary to the only other cadmium result of this kind in $^{114}$Cd by C. The design and performance of a new Compton-suppressed HPGe and charged-particle array, CLARION2-TRINITY, are described. The TRINITY charged-particle array is comprised of 64 Cerium-doped Gadolinium Aluminium Gallium Garnet (GAGG:Ce) crystals configured into five rings spanning 7-54 degrees, and two annular silicon detectors that can shadow or extend the angular coverage to backward angles with minimal $\gamma$-ray attenuation. GAGG:Ce is a non-hygroscopic, bright, and relatively fast scintillator with a light distribution well matched to SiPMs. Count rates up to 40 kHz per crystal are sustainable. Fundamental characteristics of GAGG:Ce are measured and presented, including light- and heavy-ion particle identification (PID) capability, pulse-height defects, radiation hardness, and emission spectra. The CLARION2 array consists of up to 16 Compton-suppressed HPGe Clover detectors ($\approx4\%$ efficiency at 1 MeV) configured into four rings (eight HPGe crystal rings) using a non-Archimedean geometry that suppresses back-to-back coincident 511-keV gamma rays. The entire array is instrumented with 100- and 500-MHz (14 bit) waveform digitizers which enable triggerless operation, pulse-shape discrimination, fast timing, and pileup correction. Finally, two examples of experimental data taken during the commissioning of the CLARION2-TRINITY system are given: a PID spectrum from $^{16}$O + $^{18}$O fusion-evaporation, and PID and Doppler-corrected $\gamma$-ray spectra from $^{48}$Ti + $^{12}$C Coulomb excitation., Comment: 14 pages, 21 figures

Herb Bolotin was an excellent physicist and educator with a sense of fun and unique humor. He came to Australia as the Chamber of Manufacturers Professor of Physics at the University of Melbourne in 1971, a position he held until retirement in 1995. He established nuclear structure research using the new 5U Pelletron accelerator in Melbourne, and his group became regular users of the 14UD Pelletron Accelerator at the Australian National University (now part of the Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility). Upon retirement in 1996 Herb changed direction and worked successfully on bone densitometry as Emeritus Professor at Melbourne and then as Adjunct Professor at RMIT. He published in this field until 2009. He died suddenly on July 8th 2020., Comment: To be published in Australian Physics

Isomers in $^{66}$Ga, $^{67}$Ge, and $^{69}$Ge were recoil-implanted into ferromagnetic hosts of iron and gadolinium at $\approx 6$~K, and the hyperfine magnetic fields were determined by Time Differential Perturbed Angular Distribution (TDPAD) measurements. The hyperfine field strengths at $\approx 6$~K are compared to the results of previous higher-temperature measurements and the amplitudes of the $R(t)$ functions are compared to empirical expectations. The results show that gadolinium can be a suitable host for high-precision in-beam $g$-factor measurements. The results of new $g$-factor measurements for isomers in $^{66}$Ga and $^{67}$Ge are $g(^{66}$Ga$,7^{-}) = +0.126(4)$, supporting a $[\pi_{f5/2} \otimes \nu g_{9/2}]_{7^-}$ configuration assignment, and $g(^{67}$Ge$,\frac{9}{2}^{+})=-0.1932(22)$, derived from a new measurement of the ratio $g(^{67}\mathrm{Ge})/g(^{69}\mathrm{Ge}) = 0.869(9)$. These values are in agreement with previous results. The $R(t)$ amplitudes indicate that the nuclear alignment produced in the isomeric states was significantly lower than the empirically expected $\sigma/I \approx 0.35$., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

SABRE (Sodium iodide with Active Background REjection) is a direct detection dark matter experiment based on arrays of radio-pure NaI(Tl) crystals. The experiment aims at achieving an ultra-low background rate and its primary goal is to confirm or refute the results from the DAMA/LIBRA experiment. The SABRE Proof-of-Principle phase was carried out in 2020-2021 at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS), in Italy. The next phase consists of two full-scale experiments: SABRE South at the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory, in Australia, and SABRE North at LNGS. This paper focuses on SABRE South and presents a detailed simulation of the detector, which is used to characterise the background for dark matter searches including DAMA/LIBRA-like modulation. We estimate an overall background of 0.72 cpd/kg/keV$_{ee}$ in the energy range 1$-$6 keV$_{ee}$ primarily due to radioactive contamination in the crystals. Given this level of background and considering that the SABRE South has a target mass of 50 kg, we expect to exclude (confirm) DAMA/LIBRA modulation at $4~(5)\sigma$ within 2.5 years of data taking.

The scintillation mechanism in NaI:Tl crystals produces different pulse shapes that are dependent on the incoming particle type. The time distribution of scintillation light from nuclear recoil events decays faster than for electron recoil events and this difference can be categorised using various Pulse Shape Discrimination (PSD) techniques. In this study, we measured nuclear and electron recoils in a NaI:Tl crystal, with electron equivalent energies between 2 and 40 keV. We report on a new PSD approach, based on an event-type likelihood; this outperforms the charge-weighted mean-time, which is the conventional metric for PSD in NaI:Tl. Furthermore, we show that a linear combination of the two methods improves the discrimination power at these energies., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, 1 table

The electric monopole ($E0$) transition strength $\rho^2$ for the transition connecting the third 0$^+$ level, a "superdeformed" band head, to the "spherical" 0$^+$ ground state in doubly magic $^{40}$Ca has been determined via $e^+e^-$ pair-conversion spectroscopy. The measured value, $\rho^2(E0; 0^+_3 \to 0^+_1)~=~2.3(5)\times10^{-3}$, is the smallest $\rho^2(E0; 0^+ \to 0^+)$ found in $A<50$ nuclei. In contrast, the $E0$ transition strength to the ground state observed from the second 0$^+$ state, a band head of "normal" deformation, is an order of magnitude larger, $\rho^2(E0; 0^+_2 \to 0^+_1)~=~25.9(16)\times~10^{-3}$, which shows significant mixing between these two states. Large-Scale Shell Model (LSSM) calculations were performed to understand the microscopic structure of the excited states, and the configuration mixing between them; experimental $\rho^2$ values in $^{40}$Ca and neighboring isotopes were well reproduced by the LSSM calculations. The unusually small $\rho^2(E0; 0^+_3 \to 0^+_1)$ value is due to destructive interference in the mixing of shape-coexisting structures, which are based on several different multiparticle-multihole excitations. This observation goes beyond the usual treatment of $E0$ strengths, where two-state shape mixing cannot result in destructive interference.

Recoil imaging entails the detection of spatially resolved ionization tracks generated by particle interactions. This is a highly sought-after capability in many classes of detector, with broad applications across particle and astroparticle physics. However, at low energies, where ionization signatures are small in size, recoil imaging only seems to be a practical goal for micro-pattern gas detectors. This white paper outlines the physics case for recoil imaging, and puts forward a decadal plan to advance towards the directional detection of low-energy recoils with sensitivity and resolution close to fundamental performance limits. The science case covered includes: the discovery of dark matter into the neutrino fog, directional detection of sub-MeV solar neutrinos, the precision study of coherent-elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering, the detection of solar axions, the measurement of the Migdal effect, X-ray polarimetry, and several other applied physics goals. We also outline the R&D programs necessary to test concepts that are crucial to advance detector performance towards their fundamental limit: single primary electron sensitivity with full 3D spatial resolution at the $\sim$100 micron-scale. These advancements include: the use of negative ion drift, electron counting with high-definition electronic readout, time projection chambers with optical readout, and the possibility for nuclear recoil tracking in high-density gases such as argon. We also discuss the readout and electronics systems needed to scale-up such detectors to the ton-scale and beyond., Comment: 77 pages, 20 figures. We have performed measurements of sodium nuclear recoils in NaI:Tl crystals, following scattering by neutrons produced in a $^{7}$Li(p,n)$^{7}$Be reaction. Understanding the light output from such recoils, which is reduced relative to electrons of equivalent energy by the quenching factor, is critical to interpret dark matter experiments that search for nuclear scattering interactions. We have developed a spectrum-fitting methodology to extract the quenching factor from our measurements, and report quenching factors for nuclear recoil energies between 36 and 401 keV. Our results agree with other recent quenching factor measurements that use quasi-monoenergetic neutron sources. The new method will be applied in the future to the NaI:Tl crystals used in the SABRE experiment.

Ultra-pure NaI(Tl) crystals are the key element for a model-independent verification of the long standing DAMA result and a powerful means to search for the annual modulation signature of dark matter interactions. The SABRE collaboration has been developing cutting-edge techniques for the reduction of intrinsic backgrounds over several years. In this paper we report the first characterization of a 3.4 kg crystal, named NaI-33, performed in an underground passive shielding setup at LNGS. NaI-33 has a record low $^{39}$K contamination of 4.3$\pm$0.2 ppb as determined by mass spectrometry. We measured a light yield of 11.1$\pm$0.2 photoelectrons/keV and an energy resolution of 13.2% (FWHM/E) at 59.5 keV. We evaluated the activities of $^{226}$Ra and $^{228}$Th inside the crystal to be $5.9\pm0.6 \mu$Bq/kg and $1.6\pm0.3 \mu$Bq/kg, respectively, which would indicate a contamination from $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th at part-per-trillion level. We measured an activity of 0.51$\pm$0.02 mBq/kg due to $^{210}$Pb out of equilibrium and a $\alpha$ quenching factor of 0.63$\pm$0.01 at 5304 keV. We illustrate the analyses techniques developed to reject electronic noise in the lower part of the energy spectrum. A cut-based strategy and a multivariate approach indicated a rate, attributed to the intrinsic radioactivity of the crystal, of $\sim$1 count/day/kg/keV in the [5-20] keV region.

Background: High-spin isomers at {\approx}9-MeV excitation energies have been reported in several N = 83 isotones near Z = 64. Spin and parity assignments of J{^\pi} = 49/2+ remain tentative for a number of these states in the odd-A nuclei. Purpose: To study the decay of the (49/2 +) high-spin isomer in 145 Sm, make firm spin and parity assignments to the isomer and states populated in its decay, and investigate the structure of the nucleus. Methods: The 145Sm isomer was populated in the 124Sn(26Mg,5n) reaction. Gamma-ray and conversion-electron data were collected using the Solenogam array. Results: A revised lifetime of t1/2 = 3.52(16) mus was measured for the high-spin isomer. Several new states have been added to the level scheme, and a new state at 8815 keV is proposed as the isomer, based on decay-property systematics, transition strengths, and spin and parity assignments. Firm spin and parity assignments have been made to states up to and including the isomer and the new level scheme is interpreted using shell-model calculations performed with the KShell program. Conclusions: The interpretation of the 49/2+ isomer as a deformed excitation of the core neutrons remains unchanged, although there has been a significant revision of the level scheme below the isomer, and hence significant reinterpretations of the lower-lying states.

The cascading 3.21 MeV and 4.44 MeV electric quadrupole transitions have been observed from the Hoyle state at 7.65 MeV excitation energy in $^{12}$C, excited by the $^{12}$C(p,p$^{\prime}$) reaction at 10.7 MeV proton energy. From the proton-$\gamma$-$\gamma$ triple coincidence data, a value of ${\Gamma_{\rm rad}}/{\Gamma}=6.2(6) \times 10^{-4}$ was obtained for the radiative branching ratio. Using our results, together with ${\Gamma_{\pi}^{E0}}/{\Gamma}$ from Eriksen et al., Phys. Rev. C 102, 024320 and the currently adopted $\Gamma_{\pi}(E0)$ values, the radiative width of the Hoyle state is determined as $\Gamma_{\rm rad}=5.1(6) \times 10^{-3}$ eV. This value is about 34% higher than the currently adopted value and will impact on models of stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

The direct detection of dark matter is a key problem in astroparticle physics that generally requires the use of deep-underground laboratories for a low-background environment where the rare signals from dark matter interactions can be observed. This work reports on the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory - currently under construction and the first such laboratory in the Southern Hemisphere - and the associated research program. A particular focus will be given to ANU's contribution to SABRE, a NaI:Tl dark matter direct detection experiment that aims to confirm or refute the long-standing DAMA result. Preliminary measurements of the NaI:Tl quenching factor and characterisation of the SABRE liquid scintillator veto are reported., Comment: Presented at the 2019 Heavy Ion Accelerator Symposium

Stellar carbon synthesis occurs exclusively via the $3\alpha$ process, in which three $\alpha$ particles fuse to form $^{12}$C in the excited Hoyle state, followed by electromagnetic decay to the ground state. The Hoyle state is above the $\alpha$ threshold, and the rate of stellar carbon production depends on the radiative width of this state. The radiative width cannot be measured directly, and must instead be deduced by combining three separately measured quantities. One of these quantities is the $E0$ decay branching ratio of the Hoyle state, and the current $10$\% uncertainty on the radiative width stems mainly from the uncertainty on this ratio. The $E0$ branching ratio was deduced from a series of pair conversion measurements of the $E0$ and $E2$ transitions depopulating the $0^+_2$ Hoyle state and $2^+_1$ state in $^{12}$C, respectively. The excited states were populated by the $^{12}$C$(p,p^\prime)$ reaction at 10.5 MeV beam energy, and the pairs were detected with the electron-positron pair spectrometer, Super-e, at the Australian National University. The deduced branching ratio required knowledge of the proton population of the two states, as well as the alignment of the $2^+_1$ state in the reaction. For this purpose, proton scattering and $\gamma$-ray angular distribution experiments were also performed. An $E0$ branching ratio of $\Gamma^{E0}_{\pi}/\Gamma=8.2(5)\times10^{-6}$ was deduced in the current work, and an adopted value of $\Gamma^{E0}_{\pi}/\Gamma=7.6(4)\times10^{-6}$ is recommended based on a weighted average of previous literature values and the new result. The new recommended value for the $E0$ branching ratio is about 14% larger than the previous adopted value of $\Gamma^{E0}_{\pi}/\Gamma=6.7(6)\times10^{-6}$, while the uncertainty has been reduced from 9% to 5%., Comment: Accepted for publication as a Regular Article in Phys. The emergence of nuclear collectivity near doubly-magic $^{132}$Sn was explored along the stable, even-even $^{124-130}$Te isotopes. Preliminary measurements of the $B(E2;4^{+}_{1}\rightarrow2^{+}_{1})$ transition strengths are reported from Coulomb excitation experiments primarily aimed at measuring the $g$ factors of the $4^{+}_{1}$ states. Isotopically enriched Te targets were excited by 198-205 MeV $^{58}$Ni beams. Radioactive $^{129}$Sb, which can be treated as a proton plus semi-magic $^{128}$Sn core within the particle-core coupling scheme, was studied by Coulomb excitation. Reduced electric quadrupole transition probabilities, $B(E2)$, for the $2^+$ $\times$ $\pi g_{{7/2}}$ multiplet members and candidate $\pi d_{{5/2}}$ state were measured. The results indicate that the total electric quadrupole strength of $^{129}$Sb is a factor of 1.39(11) larger than the $^{128}$Sn core, which is in stark contrast to the expectations of the empirically successful particle-core coupling scheme. Shell-model calculations performed with two different sets of nucleon-nucleon interactions suggest that this enhanced collectivity is due to constructive quadrupole coherence in the wavefunctions stemming from the proton-neutron residual interactions, where adding one nucleon to a core near a double-shell closure can have a pronounced effect. A new detector array, Solenogam, has been developed at the Australian National University Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility. Coupled initially to the SOLITAIRE 6.5 T, gas-filled, solenoidal separator, and later to an 8 T solenoid, the system enables the study of long-lived nuclear states through $\gamma$-ray and conversion-electron spectroscopy in a low-background environment. The detector system is described and results from the commissioning experiments are presented.

Excited states in $^{58,60,62}$Ni were populated via inelastic proton scattering at the Australian National University as well as via inelastic neutron scattering at the University of Kentucky Accelerator Laboratory. The Super-e electron spectrometer and the CAESAR Compton-suppressed HPGe array were used in complementary experiments to measure conversion coefficients and $\delta(E2/M1)$ mixing ratios, respectively, for a number of $2^+ \rightarrow 2^+$ transitions. The data obtained were combined with lifetimes and branching ratios to determine $E0$, $M1$, and $E2$ transition strengths between $2^+$ states. The $E0$ transition strengths between $0^+$ states were measured using internal conversion electron spectroscopy and compare well to previous results from internal pair formation spectroscopy. The $E0$ transition strengths between the lowest-lying $2^+$ states were found to be consistently large for the isotopes studied.

A new tabulation of electronic factors is reported for electron conversion for elements of Z from 5 to 126 and electronic factors for electron-positron pair conversion for elements of even Z from 4 to 100. The electronic factors for electron conversion, ${\Omega}_{CE}$(E0), were calculated using a modified version of the CATAR program developed by Pauli and Raff with a relativistic-Hartree-Fock-Slater approach (Pauli and Raff, 1975). The electronic factors for electron-positron pair conversion, ${\Omega}_{IPF}$(E0), were calculated using the model developed by Wilkinson (1969). The data tables presented here cover all atomic shells up to R2 and transition energies from 1 keV to 6000 keV and from 1100 keV to 8000 keV for pair conversion. A comparison with previous electronic factor tabulations is presented. Ratios of experimental {\Omega}(E0) values for 83 E0 transitions in 8$\leq$Z$\leq$98 are compared to this tabulation. Two examples of how to use the tabulation to extract E0 strengths are also included.

The design and operation of apparatus for measurements of in-beam hyperfine interactions and nuclear excited-state $g$ factors is described. This apparatus enables a magnetic field of about 0.1 tesla to be applied to the target and the target temperature to be set between $\sim 4$ K and room temperature. Design concepts are developed mainly in terms of transient-field $g$-factor measurements following Coulomb excitation by the implantation perturbed angular correlation (IMPAC) technique. The formalism for perturbed angular correlations is outlined and a figure of merit for optimizing these measurements is derived to inform design. Particle detection is based on the use of silicon photodiodes of rectangular shape. The particle-$\gamma$ angular correlation formalism for this case is described. Transient-field $g$-factor measurements in inverse kinematics were performed for the first-excited states of the stable, even isotopes of Ge and Se. The $g$ factors of $^{74}$Ge and $^{74}$Se were measured simultaneously using a cocktail beam, which eliminates most possible sources of systematic error in a relative $g$-factor measurement. The results are $g(^{74}{\rm Se})/g(^{74}{\rm Ge})=1.34(7)$, $g(^{70}{\rm Ge})/g(^{74}{\rm Ge}) = 1.16(15)$, $g(^{72}{\rm Ge})/g(^{74}{\rm Ge})=0.92(13)$, $g(^{76}{\rm Ge})/g(^{74}{\rm Ge})=0.88(5)$, $g(^{76}{\rm Se})/g(^{74}{\rm Se})=0.96(7)$, $g(^{78}{\rm Se})/g(^{74}{\rm Se})=0.82(5)$, $g(^{80}{\rm Se})/g(^{74}{\rm Se})=0.99(7)$ and $g(^{82}{\rm Se})/g(^{74}{\rm Se})=1.19(6)$. The measured $g$-factor ratios are in agreement with ratios from previous measurements, despite considerable variation in previous reported absolute values. The absolute values of the $g$ factors remain uncertain, however the Rutgers parametrization was used to set the transient-field strength and then compare the experimental $g$ factors with shell-model calculations based on the JUN45 and jj44b interactions. Modest agreement was found between experiment and theory for both interactions. The shell model calculations indicate that the $g(2^+_1)$ values and trends are determined largely by the balance of the spin carried by orbital motion of the protons., Comment: 13 pages; 12 figures. The conversion electrons from the decay of the 35.5-keV excited state of 125Te following the electron capture decay of 125I have been investigated at high resolution using an electrostatic spectrometer. The penetration parameter lambda = -1.2(6) and mixing ratio |delta| = 0.015(2) were deduced by fitting to literature values and present data. The even cadmium isotopes near the neutron midshell have long been considered good examples of vibrational nuclei. However, the vibrational nature of these nuclei has been questioned based on E2 transition rates that are not consistent with vibrational excitations. In the neighbouring odd-mass nuclei, the g factors of the low-excitation collective states have been shown to be more consistent with a deformed rotational core than a vibrational core. Beyond the comparison of vibrational versus rotational models, recent advances in computational power have made shell-model calculations feasible for Cd isotopes, which may give insights into the emergence and nature of collectivity in the Cd isotopes. Collective excitations in the A ~ 100 region were studied through magnetic moments and electromagnetic transitions in 111Cd. The spectroscopy of 111Cd has been studied following Coulomb excitation. Angular correlation measurements, transient-field g-factor measurements and lifetime measurements by the Doppler-broadened line shape method were performed. The structure of the nucleus was explored in relation to particle-vibration versus particle-rotor interpretations. Large-scale shell-model calculations were performed with the SR88MHJM Hamiltonian. Excited-state g factors have been measured, spin assignments examined and lifetimes determined. Attention was given to the reported $5/2^{+}$ 753-keV and $3/2^{+}$ 755-keV states. The $3/2^{+}$ 755-keV level was not observed; evidence is presented that the reported $3/2^+$ state was a misidentification of the $5/2^{+}$ 753-keV state. It is shown that the g factors and level structure of 111Cd are not readily explained by the particle-vibration model. A particle-rotor approach has both successes and limitations. The shell-model approach successfully reproduces much of the known low-excitation structure in 111Cd.

Inelastic neutron scattering was used to study the low-lying nuclear structure of $^{132}$Xe. A comprehensive level scheme is presented, as well as new level lifetimes, multipole mixing ratios, branching ratios, and transition probabilities. Comparisons of these data as well as previously measured $E2$ strengths and $g$ factors are made with new shell-model calculations for $^{132,134,136}$Xe to explore the emergence of collectivity in the Xe isotopes with $N$ < 82 near the closed shell.

The low-energy electron spectra emitted in the radioactive decay of the $^{83}$Rb and $^{83}$Sr isotopes were measured with a combined electrostatic electron spectrometer. Radioactive sources used were prepared by ion implantation of $^{83}$Sr into a high purity polycrystalline platinum foil at 30 keV and by vacuum-evaporation deposition of $^{83}$ Rb on the same type of foil. From the measured conversion electron spectra, the electron binding energies (referenced to the Fermi level) for the K, L$_1$ , L$_2$ , L$_3$ , M$_1$ , M$_2$, and M$_3$ shell/subshells of krypton in the platinum host were determined to be 14 316.4(12), 1 914.3(9), 1 720.3(9), 1 667.6(9), 281.5(9), 209.6(13), and 201.2(15) eV, respectively, and those for the evaporated layer were observed to be lower by 0.7(1) eV. For both host matrices, values of 2.3(2), 4.6(2), 1.7(2), 1.3(2), and 3.2(3) eV were obtained for the krypton K, L$_1$ , L$_2$ , L$_3$ , and M$_1$ natural atomic level widths, respectively. The absolute energies of 10 838.5(9) and 10 839.5(10) eV were measured for the KL$_2$L$_3$ ($^{1}$D$_2$) Auger transition in krypton implanted in Pt and generated in the evaporated rubidium layer, respectively. A value of 601.0(8) eV was measured for the energy difference of the KL$_2$L$_3$ ($^{1}$D$_2$) transitions in Rb and Kr in the Pt host. Multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock calculations of the krypton KLL transition energies and intensities were also performed.

The KLL Auger spectrum of rubidium following the electron capture decay of $^{83}$Sr and $^{85}$Sr isotopes was experimentally studied in detail for the first time using one $^{83}$Sr source and three $^{85}$Sr sources in different host matrices. Energies, relative intensities, and natural widths of all the nine well-resolved basic spectrum components were determined and compared with both predictions and experimental data for krypton. Results of our multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock calculations demonstrated an influence of the "atomic structure effect" on absolute energies of the KLL transitions following the creation of initial vacancies by the electron capture decay. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of decay data provided by the newly developed stochastic atomic relaxation model BrIccEmis on dose point kernels (DPKs - radial dose distribution around a unit point source) and S-values (absorbed dose per unit cumulated activity) of 14 Auger electron (AE) emitting radionuclides, namely 67Ga, 80mBr, 89Zr, 90Nb, 99mTc, 111In, 117mSn, 119Sb, 123I, 124I, 125I, 135La, 195mPt and 201Tl. Radiation spectra were based on the nuclear decay data from the medical internal radiation dose (MIRD) RADTABS program and the BrIccEmis code, assuming both an isolated-atom and condensed-phase approach. DPKs were simulated with the PENELOPE Monte Carlo (MC) code using event-by-event electron and photon transport. S-values for concentric spherical cells of various sizes were derived from these DPKS using appropriate geometric reduction factors. The number of Auger and Coster-Kronig (CK) electrons and x-ray photons released per nuclear decay (yield) from MIRD-RADTABS were consistently higher than those calculated using BrIccEmis. DPKs for the electron spectra from BrIccEmis were considerably different from MIRD-RADTABS in the first few hundred nanometres from a point source where most of the Auger electrons are stopped. S-values were, however, not significantly impacted as the differences in DPKS in the sub-micrometre dimension were quickly diminished in larger dimensions. Overestimation in the total AE energy output by MIRD-RADTABS leads to higher predicted energy deposition by AE emitting radionuclides, especially in the immediate vicinity of the decaying radionuclides. To benchmark a Monte Carlo model of the Auger cascade that has been developed at the Australian National University (ANU) against the literature data. The model is applicable to any Auger-electron emitting radionuclide with nuclear structure data in the format of the Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File (ENSDF). Sch\"onfeld's algorithms and the BrIcc code were incorporated to obtain initial vacancy distributions due to electron capture (EC) and internal conversion (IC), respectively. Atomic transition probabilities were adopted from the Evaluated Atomic Data Library (EADL) for elements with atomic number, Z = 1-100. Atomic transition energies were evaluated using a relativistic Dirac-Fock method. An energy-restriction protocol was implemented to eliminate energetically forbidden transitions from the simulations. Calculated initial vacancy distributions and average energy spectra of 123I, 124I and 125I were compared with the literature data. In addition, simulated kinetic energy spectra and frequency distributions of the number of emitted electrons and photons of the three iodine radionuclides are presented. Some examples of radiation spectra of individual decays are also given. Good agreement with the published data was achieved except for the outer-shell Auger and Coster-Kronig transitions. SABRE aims to directly measure the annual modulation of the dark matter interaction rate with NaI(Tl) crystals. A modulation compatible with the standard hypothesis in which our Galaxy is embedded in a dark matter halo has been measured by the DAMA experiment in the same target material. Other direct detection experiments, using different target materials, seem to exclude the interpretation of such modulation in the simplest scenario of WIMP-nucleon elastic scattering. The SABRE experiment aims to carry out an independent search with sufficient sensitivity to confirm or refute the DAMA claim. The SABRE concept and goal is to obtain a background rate of the order of 0.1 cpd/kg/keVee in the energy region of interest. This challenging goal is achievable by operating high-purity crystals inside a liquid scintillator veto for active background rejection. In addition, twin detectors will be located in the northern and southern hemispheres to identify possible contributions to the modulation from seasonal or site-related effects. The SABRE project includes an initial Proof-of-Principle phase at LNGS (Italy), to assess the radio-purity of the crystals and the efficiency of the liquid scintillator veto. SABRE (Sodium-iodide with Active Background REjection) is a direct dark matter search experiment based on an array of radio-pure NaI(Tl) crystals surrounded by a liquid scintillator veto. Twin SABRE experiments in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres will differentiate a dark matter signal from seasonal and local effects. The experiment is currently in a Proof-of-Principle (PoP) phase, whose goal is to demonstrate that the background rate is low enough to carry out an independent search for a dark matter signal, with sufficient sensitivity to confirm or refute the DAMA result during the following full-scale experimental phase. The impact of background radiation from the detector materials and the experimental site needs to be carefully investigated, including both intrinsic and cosmogenically activated radioactivity. Based on the best knowledge of the most relevant sources of background, we have performed a detailed Monte Carlo study evaluating the expected background in the dark matter search spectral region. The simulation model described in this paper guides the design of the full-scale experiment and will be fundamental for the interpretation of the measured background and hence for the extraction of a possible dark matter signal., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

The first-excited state $g$~factor of $^{26}$Mg has been measured relative to the $g$ factor of the $^{24}$Mg($2^+_1$) state using the high-velocity transient-field technique, giving $g=+0.86\pm0.10$. This new measurement is in strong disagreement with the currently adopted value, but in agreement with the $sd$-shell model using the USDB interaction. The newly measured $g$ factor, along with $E(2^+_1)$ and $B(E2)$ systematics, signal the closure of the $\nu d_{5/2}$ subshell at $N=14$. The possibility that precise $g$-factor measurements may indicate the onset of neutron $pf$ admixtures in first-excited state even-even magnesium isotopes below $^{32}$Mg is discussed and the importance of precise excited-state $g$-factor measurements on $sd$~shell nuclei with $N\neq Z$ to test shell-model wavefunctions is noted., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

The $E0$ transition strength in the $2^+_2 \rightarrow 2^+_1$ transitions of $^{58,60,62}$Ni have been determined for the first time following a series of measurements at the Australian National University (ANU) and the University of Kentucky (UK). The CAESAR Compton-suppressed HPGe array and the Super-e solenoid at ANU were used to measure the $\delta(E2/M1)$ mixing ratio and internal conversion coefficient of each transition following inelastic proton scattering. Level half-lives, $\delta(E2/M1)$ mixing ratios and $\gamma$-ray branching ratios were measured at UK following inelastic neutron scattering. The new spectroscopic information was used to determine the $E0$ strengths. These are the first $2^+ \rightarrow 2^+$ $E0$ transition strengths measured in nuclei with spherical ground states and the $E0$ component is found to be unexpectedly large; in fact, these are amongst the largest $E0$ transition strengths in medium and heavy nuclei reported to date.

Auger electrons emitted after nuclear decay have potential application in targeted cancer therapy. For this purpose it is important to know the Auger electron yield per nuclear decay. In this work we describe a measurement of the ratio of the number of conversion electrons (emitted as part of the nuclear decay process) to the number of Auger electrons (emitted as part of the atomic relaxation process after the nuclear decay) for the case of $^{125}$I. Results are compared with Monte-Carlo type simulations of the relaxation cascade using the BrIccEmis code. Our results indicate that for $^{125}$I the calculations based on rates from the Evaluated Atomic Data Library (EADL) underestimate the K Auger yields by 20\%., Comment: 9 pages 2 fugures

The level structures of $^{212}$Ra and $^{213}$Ra have been established via time-correlated $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy following the $^{204}$Pb($^{12}$C,4$n$)$^{212}$Ra and $^{204}$Pb($^{13}$C,4$n$)$^{213}$Ra reactions. In $^{212}$Ra, levels up to $\sim 6.2$ MeV were identified and firm spin-parity assignments were achieved to a $J^{\pi} = 19^+$ isomer with a mean life of 31(3) ns. For $^{213}$Ra the corresponding values were $\sim 4.5$ MeV in excitation energy and $J^{\pi} = 33/2^+$. Two isomeric states with $J^\pi = 23/2^+$, $\tau = 27(3)$ ns and $J^\pi = 33/2^+$, $\tau = 50(3)$ ns were discovered in $^{213}$Ra. The experimental data were compared with semiempirical shell-model calculations, which allowed dominant configurations to be assigned to most of the observed levels., Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures
