Abstract

The article comments on the process of how ecumenical councils arrived at doctrinal pronouncements. The author opines that it is important to attend to the historical circumstances surrounding the pronouncements. It is also necessary to know the conflict that led to an issue being debated at a council and resolved there. Knowing that the theologies of the parties involved offer an invaluable background for such debates is relevant, too.
