The construction of high-rise buildings in urbanized area can be subject to several constraints. When the loads transferred to the foundations become high a shallow foundation becomes insufficient. This is where piles are used to transfer the loads to deeper soil layers or to reduce the settlement. The design of the structure and the foundations starts by a good understanding of the behavior of the ground, the piles and the pile-soil interface subjected to high loads. In the framework of the project “Fondasilex”, this thesis proposes the study of the pile foundations in the tower “Silex2” built in Lyon, France. It is founded on 20 piles, 1.22 m in diameter and 15.5 m deep, which are bored into three layers of fluvial alluviums and anchored in the Miocene molasse. The soil in Lyon is poorly characterized in the literature, which is likely to lead to an oversizing of the foundations and consequently a high increase in construction costs. This thesis presents the geotechnical auscultation and numerical modeling performed within this project which aim to characterize the soil of Lyon and the pile-soil interaction, to predict the long-term behavior of the structure, the foundations and the soil and then to constitute a base of experience to help in the study of other towers planned on the Part-Dieu neighborhood. This work was accompanied by laboratory testing carried out on the alluvial and molasse samples extracted from the site. In the first part, an instrumentation of the foundations and the soil was set up to enable the real-time monitoring of their behavior. It consists of a fiberglass rod extensometer connected to 6 displacement sensors that measure the settlement of the soil at six different depths, concrete pressure cells and strain gages of two types (electrical resistance and vibrating wire) which measure respectively the stress on the head of the piles and the deformation at three positions. At the same time, the pile deformation was also measured using fiber optic sensors using the OFDR technique based on Rayleigh scattering. These measurements were analyzed in the light of the construction progress of the steel structure. In the second part, numerical models were carried out on FLAC3D, based on the finite difference method. A sensitivity analysis performed on an isolated pile model helped to understand the influence of each of the model parameters on the pile’s response. Models with two or more piles were also used to study the group effect that may occur. A perfectly plastic elastic law with a Mohr-Coulomb criterion and the Plastic-Hardening Model were found suitable to represent the behavior of the alluviums and molasse respectively. These laws have been calibrated and validated using the instrumentation and laboratory tests (triaxial, oedometer and shear box tests) carried out, due to the absence of a static pile load test., La construction de tours de grande hauteur peut être sujet à plusieurs contraintes. Dans ce type de projets, on a en général recours à des fondations profondes pour transférer les charges à des couches de sol plus profondes ou pour réduire le tassement. Un bon dimensionnement de la structure et des fondations et par conséquent une optimisation des coûts exige alors une bonne compréhension du comportement du sol, des pieux ainsi que l’interface sol-pieu. Dans le cadre du projet « Fondasilex », cette thèse propose l’étude des fondations de la tour silex2 construite à Lyon. Elle est fondée sur 20 pieux de 1.22 m de diamètre et 15.5 m de long et qui traversent trois couches d’alluvions du Rhône pour s’ancrer dans une couche de molasse du Miocène. L’absence de caractérisation précise de ces sols peut entraîner un surdimensionnement et par conséquent une augmentation des coûts de construction. Cette thèse présente l’auscultation géotechnique et la modélisation numérique réalisées dans ce projet pour mieux comprendre le mécanisme de transfert des charges et améliorer leur dimensionnement. Elle permet ainsi de caractériser le sol lyonnais et l’interaction pieux-sol, de prédire le comportement à long terme des fondations et du sol et par la suite constituer une base de données pour les autres tours prévues sur le même site. Ce travail a été accompagné d’essais de laboratoire sur les échantillons de sol prélevés du site. En première partie, une instrumentation des fondations et du sol a été mise en place afin de suivre leur comportement pendant la construction de l’ouvrage et lors de sa mise en service. Elle est constituée d’un extensomètre multipoint qui mesure le tassement du sol à 6 profondeurs, de capteurs de pression totale et de déformation (électriques ou à corde vibrante) qui ont mesuré respectivement la contrainte sur la tête des pieux et la déformation sur toute leur longueur. Cette dernière a été en même temps mesurée à l’aide de fibres optiques par réflectométrie fréquentielle avec diffusion de Rayleigh. Les mesures effectuées ont été analysées à la lumière de l’avancement de la construction de la charpente métallique. En deuxième partie, des modèles numériques ont été réalisés sur FLAC3D, basés sur la méthode des différences finies. Une étude paramétrique sur un modèle de pieu isolé a permis d’analyser l’influence de chacun des paramètres du sol sur la réponse du pieu. Dans le but d’analyser l’effet de groupe qui pourra avoir lieu dans le projet, des modèles qui comportent deux pieux ou plus ont été établis. Une loi élastique parfaitement plastique avec un critère de Mohr-Coulomb et le Plastic-Hardening Model ont été jugés bien adéquats aux alluvions et à la molasse respectivement. Ces modèles ont été calibrés et validés à l’aide de l’instrumentation et des essais de laboratoire (triaxiaux, œdométriques et à la boîte de cisaillement) qui ont été réalisés, en raison de l’absence d’un essai de chargement statique.

Mechanical engineering design processes are often technology-centered and have difficulties to integrate user’s behaviour in term of using the product adequately. This problem is encountered along the whole life cycle of a project, and is especially noticeable during the early design phase. Although, industry and academia agree that human aspects are important for the success of the product, there are few methods that support the designers concerning these factors in the synthesis part of the design works. Mechanical engineering design is connected with human behaviours targeted at and eventually leading to the development of the product. These behaviours take place all over the product lifecycle. In order to improve product performance, our research carefully thinks out a piece of research linking the user cantered and functional engineering design approached into an integrated package. It aims to a better integration of product and user behaviour during the early design phase. Designers have been obliged to set aside their dreams of a 100% machine due to the vitalrequirement of the user to perform some definite tasks with machines. While machine productivity and use conditions are the main reasons for automating production systems, human intervention on such systems remains a critical need and the tasks performed by the user remain poorly defined at the early design stage. The focus of this research is the development and evaluation of a top-down technical and socio-technical framework for engineering design, which integrates various knowledge bases and the task model. The rationale behind such a framework is to develop a behavioural design approach not in a technology-centered approach, but with a socio-technical approach, in order to help designers to optimize the product performance through taking into account using conditions and requirements during the early design phase. We propose here a design approach that integrates user’s and system’s behavioural data as design specifications. We attempt to provide seamless integration means by merging engineering data and user-centered data within the engineer’s toolkit. Otherwise, classical user-centered approach may seem difficult to handle by the whole design team : in this respect, this work provides a formal integration model in the framework in mechanical engineering design. This paper covers the multi-trade engineering design, and deals with the development of a behavioural design approach to help designers to optimize the product performance in the early design phase through taking into account utilization conditions and requirements. Finally, a software application is in development to support and allow a systematic utilization of the “behavioural design approach” by integrating it into the daily work of the designer., Les processus de conception d'ingénierie mécanique sont souvent centrés sur la technologie et ont des difficultés à intégrer de façon adéquate les comportements des utilisateurs lors des utilisations du futur produit. Ce problème existe tout au long du cycle de vie du projet de développement du produit et est particulièrement visible lors des phases préliminaires de conception. Bien que les industries et les universités conviennent que les aspects humains sont importants pour le succès du produit, il existe peu de méthodes qui soutiennent les créateurs/concepteurs pour la prise encompte de ces facteurs lors des travaux de conception. Afin d'améliorer la performance du produit, notre recherche vise à apporter ou complémenter la conception technique fonctionnelle par une approche plus intégrée. Elle vise en particulier une meilleure intégration du comportement du couple produit/utilisateur dès la phase de conception. En effet, les concepteurs ont été obligés de mettre de côté l’objectif d’une machine entièrement automatisée et doit continuer à faire appel à l'utilisateur pour effectuer certaines tâches. Même si pour améliorer la productivité de la machine l'automatisation des systèmes de production est une voix intéressante, l'intervention humaine sur ces systèmes reste un besoin critique, or elle reste mal définie au stade de la conception. Dans notre cas, le système mécanique pourrait être un système de production, une machine, un produit ou tout autre outil manipulé par un utilisateur. Les conditions d'utilisation sont directement influencées par les travaux de conception, qui constituent également le principal facteur d'amélioration des performances du système. L'objectif de cette recherche est le développement d’une évaluation technique « top-down » et d’une conception d'ingénierie socio-technique pour intégrer les diverses bases de connaissances et en particulier le modèle de tâche. L’objectif est donc de développer une approche de conception comportementale non pas uniquement centrée sur la technologie mais aussi sur une approche socio-technique, afin d'aider les concepteurs à optimiser la performance du produit globalement dès les premières phases de conception. Ainsi, nous proposons une approche qui intègre lesdonnées comportementales système technique, utilisateur et utilisateur/technique. Ce travail porte sur la conception d'ingénierie multi-métiers et traite de l'élaboration d'une approche de conception comportementale pour aider les concepteurs à optimiser la performance du produit globalement dès la phase de conception grâce à la prise en compte des conditions d'utilisation et de la présence de l’utilisateur. Pour expérimenter ces travaux, un logiciel est en développement pour soutenir et permettre une utilisation systématique de cette «approche de conception comportementale» en l'intégrant dans le travail au quotidien du concepteur.

Timber buildings are characterized by a thermal inertia lower than other technological solutions in construction. For this reason, some configurations may lead to higher cooling demand and poorer energy performance in hot climates, such as the Mediterranean ones. Possible improvement interventions often regard additional thermal mass but, if not accurately designed, they can worse significantly structural and seismic perfo rmance of timber buildings - which is of primary importance in many Italian regions. In this framework, the TimBEESt project studied some technological solutions for timber buildings in Light Timber Frame and Cross-Laminated Timber, able to improve the dynamic behaviour of the opaque components without worsening their seismic performance. First, the Italian territory was analysed in order to find classes of climate and seismic solicitations and energy and structural performances of reference LTF and CLT building models were simulated. Then, for each Italian province, specific interventions and improvements were defined and evaluated.
