Abstract

In recent years there has been considerable interest in exploiting the temperature dependence of sapphire whispering gallery mode frequency to develop a mechanically stable, high accuracy temperature sensor. Disk-resonator-based devices have been demonstrated to measure temperature with .01 K or better accuracy in the temperature range of 273 K to 373 K. Here we have utilized automated data acquisition and processing to rapidly evaluate a mechanically-stabilized sapphire whispering gallery mode resonator based on a hollow cylinder configuration.

Abstract

Nanometer-sized structures, surfaces and sub-surface phenomena have played an enormous role in science and technological applications and represent a driving-force of current interdisciplinary science. Recent developments include the atomic-scale characterization of nanoparticles, molecular reactions at surfaces, magnetism at the atomic scale, photoelectric characterization of nanostructures as well as two-dimensional solids. Research and development of smart nanostructured materials governed by their surface properties is a rapidly growing field. The main challenge is to develop an accurate and robust electronic structure description. The density of surface-related trap states is analyzed by transient UV photoconductivity and temperature-dependent admittance spectroscopy. An advanced application of thin films on shaped substrates is the deposition of catalytic layers on hollow glass microspheres for hydrogen storage controlled exothermal hydrolytic release. Surface properties of thin films including dissolution and corrosion, fouling resistance, and hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity are explored to improve materials response in biological environments and medicine. Trends in surface biofunctionalization routes based on vacuum techniques, together with advances in surface analysis of biomaterials, are discussed. Pioneering advances in the application of X-ray nanodiffraction of thin film cross-sections for characterizing nanostructure and local strain including in-situ experiments during nanoindentation are described. Precise measurements and control of plasma properties are important for fundamental investigations and the development of next generation plasma-based technologies. Critical control parameters are the flux and energy distribution of incident ions at reactive surfaces; it is also crucial to control the dynamics of electrons initiating non-equilibrium chemical reactions. Abstract

Nowadays, sapphire resonator thermometer is a novel field starts from 2007 at NIST [1] and lots of work were done then by Strouse [1] and Yu et al. [2], [3] based on spherical and cylindrical sapphire. In order to make the thermometer more and more compact, sapphire rod was studied. Investigations on potential perturbations were firstly studied before the practical thermometer was done. This paper mainly discusses about the perturbations come from the supporting screws, supporting Teflon, axial displacement to the antennae and so on. 38. Dimension Optimization for a Sapphire Rod Resonator Cavity.

Abstract

A sapphire rod resonator was presented here and the dimension optimization for the cavity was implemented based on the sapphire rod which is 6 mm in diameter and 30 mm in length. For a resonator the Q factor, coupling strength, energy portion on the sapphire were the most important factors. This paper will mainly focus on the analysis of these three factors. The relations between Q and cavity diameter and the eigenfrequency change with the cavity dimension were also discussed in the paper. 39. The Relationship of Preseason Upper Extremity Function, Pain and Training on Normalized DIII Collegiate Swimming Performance.

Abstract

Context: Shoulder injuries comprise the largest proportion of swimming injuries and there is a large percentage of swimmers participating with pain. Therefore, it is assumed that shoulder pain decreases performance, but studies have not compared collegiate swimmers' performance with and without pain., Objectives: 1) Determine if individual swimmer's shoulder pain and function are associated with a change in normalized swimming performance over a season.2) Determine if differences in normalized swimming performance exist among 3 collegiate teams. 3) Qualitatively describe and compare team's training regimes., Design: Cross sectional study., Setting: Swimmers completed pre-(T1) and post-season (T2) surveys including pain ratings and shoulder function using the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic (KJOC) shoulder and elbow questionnaire. Swimming times were obtained from published meet results. Coaches reported training programs through interviews and tracking logs., Participants: 52 NCAA Division III swimmers from 3 teams., Main Outcome Measures: Stepwise linear regression was used to determine if pain and function related to performance. Team demographics and normalized swimming performance (reduction in time per lap from season's beginning to end) were compared with ANOVAs with post-hoc tests., Results: Initial KJOC scores, but not pain, related to individual swimming performance. Differences in team performance were found (p=0.006), with Team 3 having greatest reduction in time (1.01 sec/lap), lower percentage of females, a more experienced coach and a periodization schedule with large increases and decreases in yardage. There was a main effect (p=0.043) for baseline demographics with Team 3's swimmers being taller and having longer competitive experience., Conclusions: The initial KJOC score predicting swimming performance improvement demonstrates the need for athletic trainers to prioritize enhancement of pre-season function. Endurance training induced hypoalgesia and motivation may explain the lack of effect of shoulder pain on performance. Further research is needed to elucidate optimal periodization and dryland training.
