Two new species of philometrid nematodes (Philometridae) from needlefishes (Belonidae) in Florida are described based on morphological and genetic characteristics: Philometra aequispiculata sp. n. (males and females) collected from the ovary of Strongylura marina (Walbaum) (type host) and Strongylura notata (Poey), and Philometra notatae sp. n. (females) from the swimbladder of S. notata. Both species are described and illustrated based on light and scanning electron microscopical examinations. Morphologically, P. aequispiculata sp. n. differs from all congeners mainly in the unique structure of the distal tip of the gubernaculum, whereas P. notatae sp. n. is mainly characterised by the presence of eight markedly large cephalic papillae of the outer circle in gravid and subgravid females, the body length of the gravid female (54 mm) and by the absence of caudal projections. Molecular characterisation of the new species was assessed from phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) and SSU rRNA small-subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU) sequences among closely related philometrids by way of Bayesian inference. Phylogenetic reconstructions based on COI and SSU sequences show each of the new species comprise discrete ancestor-descendent lineages.

Parasitological examination of the maya needlefish Strongylura hubbsi Collette (Belonidae) from the Rio Lacantún basin in the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve, Chiapas, Mexico showed that specimens were parasitized by two monogenean species in two different sites: Paracolpenteron hubbsii n. gen., n. sp in the urinary bladder and Ancyrocephalus chiapanensis n. sp in the gill lamellae. Paracolpenteron hubbsii differs from other dactylogyrid species without a haptoral anchor/bar complex infecting the urinary systems, gills and nasal cavities by the general morphology of hooks, a dextral vaginal opening, a tubular male copulatory organ comprising a base from which a coiled shaft arises in counterclockwise direction, and an unarticulated Y-shaped accessory piece. Ancyrocephalus chiapanensis n. sp. resembles Ancyrocephalus cornutus William & Rogers, 1972 from the gills of Strongylura marina from Florida from which it differs in possessing a twisted tube of the male copulatory organ (curved in A. cornutus), ventral bar with cavities on the ends (cavities absent in A. cornutus) and by the size of the ventral (length 31–34 μm vs. 24–27 μm in A. cornutus) and dorsal (length 25–28 μm vs. 18–22 μm in A. cornutus) anchors. These new monogeneans are described herein and their biogeography is briefly discussed based on the previous phylogenetic hypotheses concerning the host family.

Nudaciraxine imperium sp. n. (Monogenea: Axinidae) is described from the gills of the needlefish Tylosurus acus imperialis (Rafinesque) caught in the Gulf of Gabès, Tunisia. This new species mainly differs from both previously described species, Nudaciraxine gracilis (Linton, 1940) Price, 1962 from Strongylura marina (Walbaum) and Nudaciraxine cabosanlucensis Payne, 1990 from Ablennes sp., by having more testes (42 vs. 20-22 and 32, respectively). Nudaciraxine imperium also differs from N. gracilis by having a median vaginal pore (submedian in N. gracilis), narrower clamps (52-70 microm vs. 75-100 microm) and differently shaped haptoral lateral hamuli. From N. cabosanlucensis it can be distinguished by a J-shaped rather than U-shaped ovary, a longer cirrus pouch (125-190 microm vs. 64-70 microm), an oesophageal bifurcation slightly anterior to genital complex (immediately after pharynx in N. cabosanlucensis) and a wider guard on the lateral hamuli. In agreement with Payne (1990), the diagnosis of the genus Nudaciraxine Price, 1962 is amended as follows: vaginal pore dorsal, median to submedian, armed or not with horn-like spines. This is the first report of the genus Nudaciraxine in the Mediterranean Sea. The potential use of axinid monogeneans as biological tags for subspecies of belonid fishes is discussed.

In temperate estuaries, nearshore nursery fish assemblages are influenced by environmental conditions that are present during and prior to the period of juvenile fish occurrence. An intensively sampled site (Patuxent River estuary) in mesohaline Chesapeake Bay provided 9 years of data for relating previous and current environmental variables with juvenile fish assemblages. Canonical correspondence analysis identified temperature and flow from the previous winter (January-March) and week and year of the assemblage sample as the most influential variables. In contrast, environmental variables at the time of sampling were not identified as important. High summer-fall abundances of Atlantic silversides Menidia menidia, striped bass Morone saxatilis, white perch Morone americana, and Atlantic needlefish Strongylura marina were positively associated with low winter temperatures and high winter flows. High abundances of bluefish Pomatomus saltatrix, spot Leiostomus xanthurus, bay anchovy Anchoa mitchill...

SUMMARYThe Atlantic needlefish (Strongylura marina) is a unique anguilliform swimmer in that it possesses prominent fins, lives in coastal surface-waters, and can propel itself across the surface of the water to escape predators. In a laboratory flow tank, steadily swimming needlefish perform a speed-dependent suite of behaviors while maintaining at least a half wavelength of undulation on the body at all times. To investigate the effects of discrete fins on anguilliform swimming, I used high-speed video to record body and fin kinematics at swimming speeds ranging from 0.25 to 2.0 Ls-1 (where L is the total body length). Analysis of axial kinematics indicates that needlefish are less efficient anguilliform swimmers than eels, indicated by their lower slip values. Body amplitudes increase with swimming speed, but unlike most fishes, tail-beat amplitude increases linearly and does not plateau at maximal swimming speeds. At 2.0 Ls-1, the propulsive wave shortens and decelerates as it travels posteriorly, owing to the prominence of the median fins in the caudal region of the body. Analyses of fin kinematics show that at 1.0 Ls-1 the dorsal and anal fins are slightly less than 180° out of phase with the body and approximately 225° out of phase with the caudal fin. Needlefish exhibit two gait transitions using their pectoral fins. At 0.25 L s-1, the pectoral fins oscillate but do not produce thrust, at 1.0 L s-1 they are held abducted from the body,forming a positive dihedral that may reduce rolling moments, and above 2.0 L s-1 they remain completely adducted.

Cytogenetic studies have assisted in the taxonomic classification of organisms, especially those involving species with highly similar morphologic characteristics, or so-called cryptic species. Strongylura marina and Strongylura timucu collected from Paranagua Bay, Parana Coast in Southern Brazil are considered cryptic species, and the identification of interspecific variations based on the number and/or morphology of its chromosomes may serve as differentiating cytotaxonomic markers. Chromosomes of the two species were subjected to different banding and staining methods (C-, Ag-, and DAPI-CMA3), as well as chromosomal mapping of major rDNA (45S), revealed with an 18S probe by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). The pattern of distribution of constitutive heterochromatin showed distinct features involving the pericentromeric and telomeric bands in both species. In S. marina, chromosome 1 represents the main species-specific marker, appearing almost entirely heterochromatic. In both species, the 45S rDNA is located at terminal region of the short arm of the chromosome 6, as detected by silver nitrate staining and FISH. Despite the apparent conserved diploid number of 48 chromosomes, data on the karyotype microstructure characterize the cytogenetic profile of the genus and may allow the establishment of cytotaxonomic and evolutionary inferences for these fishes.

Two species of Mothocya Costa, in Hope, 1851 are reported from the Virgin Islands. Mothocya xenobranchia Bruce, 1986 was collected from St. John Island from the gills of the Atlantic needlefish, Strongylura marina, which is a new locality record and also confirms a previously uncertain host identity. Mothocya bertlucy sp. n. is described from St. Thomas, St John and Guana Islands, from the gills of the redlip blenny, Ophioblennius macclurei, the first record of a blenny as host for any Mothocya. The distinguishing characters of Mothocya bertlucy sp. n. include its small size (< 9 mm) and eyes, the slender pleotelson with a narrowly rounded caudomedial point, extended uropod peduncle and uropods which do not extend past the pleotelson posterior margin, and the narrow pleon which is only slightly overlapped by pereonite 7.

The Atlantic needlefish (Strongylura marina) is a coastal epipelagic species inhabiting shallow coastal waters along the western Atlantic coast from Maine to Brazil. Little has been published about the species due to lack of commercial or sport value. A population exists in Lake Mattamuskeet, a coastal lake connected to Pamlico Sound (NC, USA) via four man-made canals, and fish access is controlled by water-control structures. Herein we describe the life history and age and growth dynamics of the species in the lake. Based on anecdotal and state reports, we believe this species may exhibit anadromy. Sampling was from March to May 1997 and 1998, and from March to October 2001. We also collected from another coastal watershed to complete the length distribution. Spring adults had a high gonadosomatic index compared with autumn (fall) adults, which had atresia. No eggs or age-0 fish were captured in the lake during summer. The four length cohorts matched growth and back-calculated length at age. Otoliths were linearly related to fish length and were used for ageing and growth calculations. Although we found no direct evidence of spawning, data compilation suggests that Atlantic needlefish could be using this lake for reproduction.

The following 3 species of Philometra Costa, 1845 (Nematoda: Philometridae) were recorded from marine fishes off Florida: Caranginema americanum Moravec, Montoya-Mendoza and Salgado-Maldonado, 2008 from the subcutaneous tissue of the crevalle jack Caranx hippos (Linnaeus) (Carangidae); Philometra charlestonensis Moravec, de Buron, Baker and González-Solís, 2008 from the gonads (ovaries) of the scamp Mycteroperca phenax Jordan and Swain (Serranidae); and Philometra sp. (only subgravid females) from the gonads (ovaries) of the Atlantic needlefish Strongylura marina (Walbaum) (Belonidae). The male of C. americanum , the type species of Caranginema Moravec, Montoya-Mendoza, and Salgado-Maldonado, 2008 , is described for the first time. Its general morphology is similar to that of males of Philometra and Philometroides species. The males of C. americanum are mainly characterized by an elongate body, 3.13-3.28 mm long, a markedly elongate esophagus, and spicules and a gubernaculum 69-75 µm and 48-51 µm long, respectively. The present findings of C. americanum and P. charlestonensis represent new geographical records. The gonad-infecting Philometra sp. from S. marina probably belongs to an undescribed species.

We compared the diets of Atlantic needlefish, Strongylura marina, and redfin needlefish, Strongylura notata, in the Alvarado lagoonal system, Veracruz, Mexico, and analyzed diet breadth and trophic overlap between the species. All fishes were collected monthly from June 2000 to July 2001 at twelve sampling stations. A total of 74 intestinal tracts from S. marina were analyzed. The diet of S. marina consisted of 25 prey types with fish being the dominate prey. In eighty-nine digestive tracts examined from S. notata, the diet consisted of 29 prey types with the dominant prey including fishes, penaeid shrimp, polychaetes, and hymenopteran insects. There was moderate diet overlap (α = 0.4903) between S. marina and S. notata in the rainy season, while there was little diet overlap between species during the “nortes” (α = 0.1037) or dry (α = 0.1675) season. There was reduced niche breadth in both S. marina and S. notata during the “nortes” (BA = 0.175 and 0.105, respectively) and dry (BA = 0.128 and 0.173, respectively) seasons, with niche breadth values being higher for both species during the rainy season (BA = 0.254 and 0.296, respectively). RESUMEN Se realizo una comparacion de la dieta de los belonidos, Strongylura marina y Strongylura notata, en el sistema lagunar de Alvarado, Veracruz, Mexico, analizando la amplitud de dieta y el solapamiento trofico de ambas especies. Los organismos se colectaron mensualmente en el periodo de junio de 2000 a julio de 2001 en 12 estaciones de muestreo. Se analizaron 74 tractos digestivos de S. marina. La dieta de S. marina consiste de 25 tipos de presa de los cuales los peces constituyeron la presa dominante. Para S. notata se analizaron 89 tractos digestivos, la dieta de esta especie comprendio 29 tipos de presas diferentes, siendo los peces, camaron, poliquetos e himenopteros las presas dominantes para esta especie. El solapamiento trofico entre S. marina y S. notata fue moderado (α = 0.4903) en la epoca de lluvias, disminuyendo en las epocas de nortes (α = 0.1037) y secas (α = 0.1675). La amplitud del nicho trofico para S. marina y S. notata fue baja en nortes (BA = 0.175 y 0.105, respectivamente) y en secas (BA = 0.128 y 0.173, respectivamente), siendo mayor para ambas especies en la epoca de lluvias (BA = 0.254 y 0.296, respectivamente).

K. mochimae differs from K. virilis Unnithan, 1957 in shaped and location of the genitals and number of clamps and testis(K. mochimae posses 69 to 76 and 15 - 20 respectively, while K. virilis has 33 at 46 and more than 100 respectively). On the order hand, K. lateriporis Mamaev, 1988, another related species, has different structure and form of the vagina, asymmetrical clamps and copulatory organ displaying a short styled. K. univaginalis Ramalimgam, 1960 presents only one vaginal pore, while K. mochimae presents two pore. A. marinae differs from the other three described species of genus in: body size, form of the opisthaptor, number of clamps, number and arrangement of testis, and shaped and arrangement of the ovary. Three polyhaline subtidal marsh creeks in southern New Jersey were sampled with weirs and seines to determine seasonal patterns of utilization by fishes and macroinvertebrates. Sixty-four species of fish, 13 invertebrates, and the diamondback terrapin were collected in 69 weir and 57 seine samples from April to November 1988 and April to October 1989. Average abundance, biomass, and faunal composition were strongly seasonal with greatest abundances during spring and summer, and peaks in May and August. Sixteen species were represented by all life-history stages, including the five most important species by combined ranks of percent frequency, mean abundance, and mean biomass. These five species were important during spring, summer, and fall and included the fishes Menidia menidia and Fundulus heteroclitus, the shrimps Palaemonetes vulgaris and Crangon septemspinosa, and the crab Callinectes sapidus. In addition, there were distinct seasonal assemblages of other species which utilized the creeks primarily as young-of-the-year. Importnat species in spring collections included the fishes Clupea harengus, Alosa aestivalis, Alosa pseudoharengus, Pollachius virens, and Urophysics regia, while Leiostomus xanthurus, Pomatomus saltatrix, Paralichthys dentatus, Mugil curema, and Strongylura marina were important in the summer. Fall samples were best characterized by declining abundances of summer species. Thus, subtidal marsh creeks in southern New Jersey appear to be valuable nurseries for a variety of species which spawn over the continental shelf, as well as one of the most important habitats for estuarine residents.

Neoapocreadium chabaudi sp. n. (Digenea, Apocreadiidae) is described from the intestine of a marine fish Stephanolepis hispidus from Brazil, and the genus Schikhobalotrema Skrjabin & Guschanskaja, 1955 represented by its type species S. acuta (Linton, 1910) Skrjabin and Guschanskaja, 1955, is for the first time reported from the intestine of Strongylura marina in Brazil. N. chabaudi sp. n. is more closely related to N. angustum (Sogandares-Bernal, 1959) from which differs mainly in the size of the eggs, by the presence of intercecal vitelline follicles in the region between the testes and acetabulum, and by the large genital atrium.

Quantitative gravimetric analyses of stomach contents were carried out on juveniles of 21 species of fishes that cohabit seagrass beds near Crystal River, Florida. Our analyses were based on dry weights of food items and are expressed as percent of total stomach contents. The species analyzed were Harengula pensacolae, Opisthonema oglinum, Anchoa hepsetus, Anchoa mitchilli, Synodus foetens, Strongylura marina, Hyporhamphus unifasciatus, Oligoplites saurus, Trachinotus falcatus, Eucinostomus gula, Haemulon plumieri, Orthopristis chrysoptera, Bairdiella chrysura, Cynoscion nebulosus, Diplodus holbrooki, Lagodon rhomboides, Microgobius gulosus, Chasmodes saburrae, Menidia beryllina, Trinectes maculatus, and Sphoeroides nephelus. Analyses of stomach contents taken from small, sequentially arranged size classes enabled us to delineate discrete ontogenetic changes in food habits in many of the species. 1. The bucephalid cercaria from Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin), the commercial oyster of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of North America, has been called Bucephalus haimeanus Lacaze-Duthiers and Bucephalopsis haimeana (Lacaze-Duthiers). Neither of these names is correct. Bucephalus haimeanus Lacaze-Duthiers, 1854, is a parasite of the European oyster, Ostrea edulis L. (and possibly of cockles, Cardium spp.) in oceanic or near-oceanic habitats, while the American species is a parasite of an estuarine oyster and is found almost entirely in the least saline parts of its host's range. The correct name of the American oyster bucephalid is Bucephalus cuculus McCrady, 1874.2. The life cycles of all European marine bucephalids are still unknown. The life cycles described in the European literature are based entirely on morphological resemblances which are not close enough to be convincing, and none of them has been tested by experiment. Bucephalid cercariae do not show any of the features which are used to distinguish genera. So far as present evidence goes, Bucephalopsis haimeana is just as likely to develop into a Rhipidocotyle, a Bucephalus, or a Prosorhynchus as it is to develop into a member of the genus Bucephalopsis Nicoll, 1914, nec Diesing, 1855.3. Bucephalopsis Diesing, 1855, is the name proposed by Diesing for a subgenus created especially for the cercaria Bucephalus haimeanus Lacaze-Duthiers, 1854. Nicoll had no right to use this name for the genus of gasterostomes which, as adults, have a muscular sucker at the anterior end and do not have accessory structures such as a hood or papillae. Up to the present, there is still no evidence that this genus has any connexion with Lacaze-Duthiers's cercaria, other than common membership in the family Bucephalidae. Therefore the new name Bucephaloides Hopkins has been proposed to replace the generic name Bucephalopsis Nicoll, 1914, nec Diesing, 1855, with Bucephaloides gracilescens (Rudolphi, 1819) as the type species. This genus does not include Bucephalus haimeanus Lacaze-Duthiers because the metacercaria and the adult form of that species remain unknown.4. Tennent (1905, 1906, 1909) did not prove that there was any connexion between the oyster cercaria, Bucephalus cuculus McCrady, and the immature bucephalids in Menidia or the adult bucephalids in Strongylura. His drawings show that at least some of the bucephalids which Tennent studied had a hood and therefore belong in Rhipidocotyle. Re-examination of the bucephalids in Strongylura marina reveals that at least three species of bucephalids occur as adults in that host; these are described in this paper as Rhipidocotyle transversale Chandler, 1935, R. lintoni Hopkins, and Bucephaloides strongylurae Hopkins. Rhipidocotyle transversale and Bucephaloides strongylurae were also found in an immature (metacercaria) stage in Menidia, and were the only bucephalids found in Menidia during this study. The excretory systems of the three species in Strongylura all have features which exclude the possibility that they could develop from the oyster cercaria, Bucephalus cuculus.5. Tennent's (1906) drawing (fig. 46) of an adult bucephalid from Strongylura marina, which Eckmann (1932) mentions as the best representation of the species characteristics of Bucephalopsis haimeana (Lacaze-Duthiers), was probably made from a specimen of Rhipidocotyle lintoni.6. Tennent (1909) proved that eggs or larvae from an unknown adult bucephalid in Lepisosteus osseus could infect oysters, Crassostrea virginica, and develop into sporocysts which would grow in oysters for at least one month. This is the only experimental proof of a connexion between an adult bucephalid in a fish and a larval bucephalid in an oyster. Until the present, no bucephalid from a gar (Lepisosteus) had ever been described. In the present paper Rhipidocotyle lepis-ostei Hopkins is described from adults in Lepisosteus spatula, the alligator gar, in Louisiana. The metacercariae of Rhipidocotyle lepisostei are abundant in the fin rays of mullets, Mugil cephalus and M. curema. The excretory system of this species is not identical with that of Bucephalus cuculus, but is not so different as to exclude the possibility that the oyster cercaria might develop into R. lepisostei. If, in the future, R. lepisostei is proved to be the adult form of Bucephalus cuculus, the name of the species will become Rhipidocotyle cuculus (McCrady), and R. lepisostei will become a synonym.

While conducting juvenile Atlantic and Gulf menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus andB. patronus) abundance surveys and tagging studies in estuaries from Brownsville, Texas to Barnstable Harbor, Mass. in 1971, anomalous menhaden and other species were collected. A total of nine new and five previously reported anomalies for menhaden and six new anomalies for five other species are reported. The five species were spot,Leiostomus xanthurus; white mullet,Mugil curema; Atlantic silverside,Menidia menidia; Atlantic needlefish,Strongylura marina and longnose gar,Lepisosteus osseus.
