Zero-field muon spin relaxation (ZF-$\mu $SR) data for dilute spin magnetic systems have been widely interpreted with what is called a Kubo-Toyabe form based on a Lorentzian distribution of local field components. We derive here the proper magnetic field \textit{magnitude} distribution using independent and uncorrelated \textit{component} distributions. Our result is then compared to the previously accepted formula for ZF-$\mu $SR. We discuss the origins of the magnetic field component and magnitude distributions. Further we found that after rescaling the magnetic field, the differences that are amenable to experimental examination are quite small, although the interpretations behind them are quite different., Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure

Muon spin rotation measurements of the magnetic field distribution in the vortex state of the oxygen deficient high-Tc superconductor YBa{2}Cu{3}O{6.60} reveal a vortex-lattice melting transition at much lower temperature than that in the fully oxygenated material. The transition is best described by a model in which adjacent layers of ``pancake'' vortices decouple in the liquid phase. Evidence is also found for a pinning-induced crossover from a solid 3D to quasi-2D vortex lattice, similar to that observed in the highly anisotropic superconductor Bi{2+x}Sr{2-x}CaCu{2}O{8+y}., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 5 postscript files

We have investigated the magnetic and the superconducting properties of the hybrid ruthenate-cuprate compound RuSr_{2}GdCu_{2}O_{8} by means of zero-field muon spin rotation- (ZF-$\mu $SR) and DC magnetization measurements. The DC-magnetisation data establish that this material exhibits ferromagnetic order of the Ru-moments ($\mu (Ru) \approx 1 \mu_{B}$) below T_{Curie} = 133 K and becomes superconducting at a much lower temperature T_c = 16 K. The ZF-$\mu $SR experiments indicate that the ferromagnetic phase is homogeneous on a microscopic scale and accounts for most of the sample volume. They also suggest that the magnetic order is not significantly modified at the onset of superconductivity., Comment: improved version submitted to Phys. Rev. B

Muon spin rotation spectroscopy has been used to measure the effective size of the vortex cores in optimally doped YBa2Cu3O6.95 as a function of temperature and magnetic field deep in the superconducting state. While the core size at H=2T is close to 20 angstroms and consistent with that measured by STM at 6T, we find a striking increase in the core size at lower magnetic fields, where it approaches an extraordinarily large value of about 100 angstroms. This suggests that the average value of the superconducting coherence length in cuprate superconductors may be larger than previously thought at low magnetic fields., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 1 text file

The internal field distribution in the vortex state of YBa2Cu3O6.60 is shown to be a sensitive measure of both the magnetic penetration depth and the vortex-core radius. The temperature dependence of the vortex core radius is found to be weaker than in the conventional superconductor NbSe2 and much weaker than theoretical predictions for an isolated vortex. The effective vortex-core radius decreases sharply with increasing H, whereas the penetration depth is found to be much stronger than in NbSe2., Comment: 5 pages, RevTeX, 4 encapsulated postscript figures, submitted to Phys. Neutron fluences have been measured from 155 MeV/nucleon 4He and 12C ions stopping in an Al target at laboratory angles between 10 and 160 deg. The resultant spectra were integrated over angle and energy above 10 MeV to produce total neutron yields. Comparison of the two systems shows that approximately two times as many neutrons are produced from 155 MeV/nucleon 4He stopping in Al and 155 MeV/nucleon 12C stopping in Al. Using an energy-dependent geometric cross-section formula to calculate the expected number of primary nuclear interactions shows that the 12C + Al system has, within uncertainties, the same number of neutrons per interaction (0.99 +/- 0.03) as does the 4He + Al system (1.02 +/- 0.04), despite the fact that 12C has three times as many neutrons as does 4He. Energy and angular distributions for both systems are also reported. No major differences can be seen between the two systems in those distributions, except for the overall magnitude. Where possible, the 4He + Al spectra are compared with previously measured spectra from 160 and 177.5 MeV/nucleon 4He interactions in a variety of stopping targets. The reported spectra are consistent with previously measured spectra. The data were acquired to provide data applicable to problems dealing with the determination of the radiation risk to humans engaged in long-term missions in space; however, the data are also of interest for issues related to the determination of the radiation environment in high-altitude flight, with shielding at high-energy heavy-ion accelerators and with doses delivered outside tumor sites treated with high-energy hadronic beams.

We have obtained charge-changing cross sections and partial cross sections for fragmentation of 1.05 GeV/nucleon Fe projectiles incident on H, C, Al, Cu, and Pb nuclei. The energy region covered by this experiment is critical for an understanding of galactic cosmic ray propagation and space radiation biophysics. Surviving primary beam particles and fragments with charges from 12 to 25 produced within a forward cone of half-angle 61 mrad were detected using a silicon detector telescope to identify their charge and the cross sections were calculated after correction of the measured yields for finite target thickness effects. The cross sections are compared to model calculations and to previous measurements. Cross sections for the production of fragments with even-numbered nuclear charges are seen to be enhanced in almost all cases.

Zero- and longitudinal-field muon spin relaxation measurements on a heavy fermion system CeCu2.1 Si2 have revealed an onset of static magnetic ordering below T(M) approximately 0.8 K, which coexists with superconductivity below T(c) = 0.7 K. The line shapes of the observed muon spin depolarization functions suggest an ordering in either spin glass or incommensurate spin-density-wave state, with a small averaged static moment of the order of 0.1 micro-B per formula unit at T approaches 0.

Motional narrowing of the transverse-field muon spin rotation signal was observed in gamma-TiH(x) for x = 1.83, 1.97, and 1.99. An analysis of the data for TiH1.99 near room temperature indicates that the mechanism responsible for the motion of the muon out of the octahedral site is thermally activated diffusion with an attempt frequency comparable to the optical vibrations of the lattice. Monte Carlo calculations to simulate the effect of muon and proton motion upon the muon field-correlation time were used to interpret the motional narrowing in TiH1.97 near 500 K. The interpretation is dependent upon whether the Bloembergen, Purcell, and Pound (BPP) theory or an independent spin-pair relaxation model is used to obtain the vacancy jump rate from proton NMR T1 measurements. Use of BPP theory shows that the field-correction time can be obtained if the rate of motion of the muon with respect to the rate of the motion for the protons is decreased. An independent spin-pair relaxation model indicates that the field-correlation time can be obtained if the rate of motion for the nearest-neighbor protons is decreased.

Muon spin rotation and neutron scattering studies on powder and single-crystal specimens of La2CuO(4-y) are compared. The apparent difference between the muon and neutron results for the ordered moment in the antiferromagnetic state is interpreted as the signature of increasingly short-ranged spatial spin correlations with increasing oxygen content.

Zero- and longitudinal-field muon spin relaxation measurements on a polycrystal sample of a heavy fermion superconductor CeCu2.1 Si2 (T(c) = 0.7 K) have revealed an onset of static magnetic ordering below T approximately 0.8 K. The line shapes of the observed spectra in zero field indicate a wide distribution of static random local fields at muon sites, suggesting that the ordering is either spin glass or incommensurate spin-density-wave state. The observed width of the random local field at T = 0.05 K corresponds to a small averaged static moment of the order of 0.1 micro-B per formula unit.

Uniaxial stress was used on Fe single crystals to induce muon precession frequency shifts. The frequency shift for a nominally pure Fe sample at 302K was -0.34 + or - .023 MHz per 100 microstrain along the 100 magnetization axis. This corresponds to a change of magnetic field at the muon of 25.1 + to 1.6G/100 magnetic moment. For an Fe (3wt%Si) single crystal the shifts were -0.348 + or - .008 MHz/100 magnetic moment. The agreement between the shifts for Fe and Fe(3wt%Si) shows the effect to be intrinsic to iron and not strongly impurity sensitive. These shifts and their temperature dependence (1/T) are dominated by the effect of strain inducted population shifts between crystallographically equivalent, but mgnetically inequivalent sites. Their magnitudes are in good agreement ith previous theoretical predictions and by previous extrapolation from calculations on Nb and V especially if both 4T(0) and 1T sites contribute comparably.

Nuclear gamma rays in coincidence with outgoing pions and/or protons following single nucleon removal from Mg24 by 200 MeV pi(+) were detected with Ge(Li) detectors. Differential cross sections are reported for gamma rays from the first excited mirror states of Na23 to Mg23 in coincidence with positive pions and/or protons detected in particle telescopes at 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 deg; angle integrated absolute cross sections and cross section ratios sigma (Mg23/sigma (Na23) are calculated. These results are compared with the predictions of the one step quasifree (OSQF), the intranuclear cascade (INC), and the nucleon charge exchange (NCX) reaction models. The OSQF and the INC calculations generally agree with the experimental results, while the NCX calculations are in disagreement.

The muon spin rotation (MuSR) technique is used to probe the microscopic electron density in materials. High temperature MuSR and magnetization measurements in nickel are in progress to allow an unambiguous determination of the muon impurity interaction and the impurity induced change in local spin density. The first results on uniaxial stress induced frequency shifts in an Fe single crystal are also reported.

Gamma-ray spectra taken in prompt coincidence with incident 180-MeV pi/+/, 220-MeV pi/-/ and 0-MeV pi/-/ on the self-conjugate targets C-12 and S-32 reveal that the cross sections/yields are equal to or near zero for production of the J/pi/,T = 0/+/, 1 levels of the odd Z, odd N nuclei resulting from np removal. It is thought that the 0-MeV pi/-/ results can be explained by selection rules governing one-step quasi-free interactions but that the delta(1232) region results cannot. This indicates that there may be additional restrictions upon the pion absorption mechanism.

The temperature dependence of the interstitial magnetic field, B, as determined by the rotation of the spin of the muon, has been measured for dilute polycrystalline iron alloys with Mo, Ti, and Nb additions over a temperature range of 240 to 633 K. In all cases the behaviors differ from one another and from the Fe(Al) alloys previously studied. B, which is negative with respect to the magnetization, is increased in magnitude by Al and Mo, and decreased greatly by Ti. The addition of Nb creates a two-phase alloy from which the role of heterogeneity and/or strain on B in iron can be assessed. If the temperature dependence of the hyperfine field extracted from B for Fe(Mo) alloys is interpreted on the model previously used to discuss the Fe(Al) data, then the muon must be attracted to the Mo atom while repelled by the Al atoms as the temperature decreases.

Prompt gamma rays from the interaction of 720-MeV alpha particles with Al-27 and Si-28 were detected and analyzed to identify residual nuclei and to determine cross sections for production of specific levels. No gamma-ray transitions were detected from nuclei heavier than the target. From Doppler broadening, the momentum of the residual nuclei was estimated. The results are compared with previous results for 140- and 1600-MeV alphas on Al-27 and approximately 200-MeV positive or negative pions on Al-27 and Si-28 and fitted to a spallation-yield formula.

Polarized positive muon radiation was stopped in an ellipsoidal iron target and its precession was observed in a transverse magnetic field. Results indicate that the conduction electron polarization in the 77 K-Fe Curie point region is less than expected, and that the relaxation time of the muon polarization is dominated by the static inhomogeneity to 900 K, at which point magnetization fluctuations become important.

Data from cyclotron experiments and room temperature studies of dilute iron alloys and iron crystals under strain were analyzed. The Fe(Mo) data indicate that the effect upon the contact hyperfine field in Fe due to the introduction of Mo is considerably less than that expected from pure dilution, and the muon (+) are attracted to the Mo impurity sites. There is a significant change in the interstitial magnetic field with Nb concentration. The Fe(Ti) data, for which precession could clearly be observed early only at 468K and above, show that the Ti impurities are attractive to muon (+), and the magnitude of B(hf) is reduced far beyond the amount expected from pure dilution. Changes in the intersitital magnetic field with the introduction of Cr, W, Ge, and Si are also discussed. When strained to the elastic limit, the interstitial magnetic field in Fe crystals is reduced by 33 gauss, and the relaxation rate of the precession signal increases by 47%.

The hyperfine field on the muon, B sub hf, at interstitial sites in dilute Fe(Al) alloys was measured for four different concentrations of Al and as a function of temperature by the muon spin rotation method. The magnitude of B sub hf, which is negative, decreases at rates ranging from 0.09 + or - 0.03% per at.% Al at 200 K to an asymptotic limit of 0.35 + or - far above 440 K. This behavior shows that sites near the Al impurity are weakly repulsive to the muon, with an interaction potential of 13 + or - 3 meV. In order to fit the temperature dependence of the hyperfine field, it is necessary to hypothesize the existence of a small concentration of unidentified defects, possibly dislocations, which are attractive to the muon. Although the Al impurity acts as a non-magnetic hole in the Fe lattice, the observed decrease in B sub hf is only 35% of the decrease in the bulk magnetization. It is concluded that B sub hf is determined mainly by the enhanced screening of conduction electrons in Fe and Fe(Al). Since the influence of the Al impurity on the neighboring Fe monents is very small, most of the change in B sub hf is therefore attributed to the increase in conduction electron polarization of the Al impurity.
