Aims: Enterococci are lactic acid bacteria belonging to the division Firmicutes. They occur in different ecosystems, rabbits including. Enterococci can possess probiotic properties and produce antimicrobial substances-bacteriocins. Rabbit meat as nutritionally healthy food offers novel source to study bacteriocin-producing and/or probiotic enterococci. Methodology and results: Enterococci were detected from rabbit meat samples (42). Most of the isolates were allotted to the species Enterococcus faecium by PCR method. The isolates have possessed the structural genes for enterocins A, P, B production. The inhibitory substances produced by the isolated enterococci inhibited the growth of 12 indicators. Of 34 isolates, 15 strains have shown the antimicrobial activity against L. monocytogenes CCM 4699, 12 strains against S. aureus 3A3, 10 strains against S. aureus 5A2 as well as Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis PT4. Moreover, enterococci have tolerated 5 % bile, low pH; they have produced lactid acid in the amount from 0.740 ± 0.091 to 1.720 ± 0.095 mmol/l. The isolates were mostly sensitive to antibiotics. Conclusion, significance and impact of study: Bacteriocin-producing strain E. faecium M3a has been selected for more detail characterization of its bacteriocin and probiotic properties with the aim for its further application as an additive.

Modulation of the intestinal microbiota through the application of probiotic bacteria is currently one possible way to improve gastrointestinal health in dogs. Knowledge on the efficacy of lactic acid bacteria in a diarrhoeic disorder of dogs is still spreading; however, the used or commercialized strains are often not of canine origin. In this study, E. faecium DSM 32820 strain (a canine isolate selected in our laboratory based on safety and probiotic criteria) was fed to nine dogs suffering from acute non-haemorrhagic diarrhoea at a dose of 1×109 CFU/ml for 7 days. The effects of sage on the enteral microbiota and leukocytic response of chickens challenged withSalmonellaEnteritidis (SE) PT4 were studied. Chickens were divided into four groups: control, sage (S), SE and sage+S. Enteritidis (SSE). Groups S and SSE were fed sage extract (8.2 g kg−1) for 21 days. Groups SE and SSE were challenged with SE (108CFU) on day 4. The administration of the sage extract to the SSE group confirmed the selective antibacterial activity on SE, and resulted in an increased number of leukocytes, lymphocytes, heterophils and phagocytic activity index at day 3 post-infection. In the early phase of the infection, there was a tendency to increase the numbers of CD3+, CD8+ and IgM+ cells in the SSE group. The later phase led to a decrease of IgM+, CD3+ and CD4+ cells, but an increase in influx of macrophages, which suggested their movement into inflammatory regions. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Antibiotic susceptibility or resistance, urease activity, detection of the structural genes for bacteriocin production, bacteriocin activity as well as sensitivity of the isolates to enterocins (Ent) A and M were determined in 23 isolates of new species Enterococcus haemoperoxidus and E. moraviensis. The majority of the strains were antibiotic sensitive and exhibited low urease activity (<10 nkat/mL). The most frequently detected genes for Ent were entA and entP. However, only the strain 466 of E. haemoperoxidus produced an antibacterial substance with inhibitory activity against 21 G+ indicators. It was partially purified reaching an activity of up to 12 800 AU/mL. This bacteriocin active strain also possessed the genes for EntA and EntP. The other strains did not inhibit the indicator strains. The substance produced by the 466 strain was active even after a 5-months storage at +4 and −20°C. This substance has proteolytic and hydrophilic character, pH optimum of bacteriocin production by this strain being between 4 and 7. While E. moraviensis strains showed sensitivity to EntA (produced by E. faecium EK13) and to EntM (produced by E. faecium AL41), E. haemoperoxidus strains were sensitive to EntA (except strain 382) but less sensitive to the treatment by EntM. The ability of canine strain Enterococcus faecium EE3 to survive in healthy dogs and its effect on microbiological and biochemical parameters was determined. The strain was individually applied to 11 dogs per os at a dose of 109 CFU/mL (differed from 2 to 3 mL) for 1 week and persisted in feces for 3 months after cessation of its administration (reaching average concentration of 6.83±0.95 log CFU/g). Seven d after administration, a decrease in staphylococci and a significant decrease in Pseudomonas-like bacteria was observed. On the other hand, concentration of lactic acid bacteria increased but the growth of E. coli was not influenced. In the blood samples of dogs after 0–1 d (before application) and the blood samples 1 week after application, total lipids decreased in 8 dogs; the total protein also decreased. The levels of cholesterol were brought to the physiological level, i.e. in blood samples with low cholesterol values it increased to the physiological level and in those with high levels it decreased; cholesterol was not influenced in 3 dogs. The AD 2 strain isolated from feces of a healthy dog in Slovakia was characterized phenotypically by the conventional tests and commercial identification kits API Staph and ID32 Staph. Results of biochemical tests identified the strain as S. piscifermentans, fully corresponding with the species description. Further characterization by whole-cell protein profile analysis (SDS-PAGE) confirmed the identification based on biochemical tests and showed that the AD 2 strain is S. piscifermentans; lactic acid production, urease activity, bacteriocin production and the antibiotic susceptibility of it were also determined. S. piscifermentans AD 2 isolated first from an animal source was deposited in the Czech Collection of Microorganisms as Staphylococcus piscifermentans CCM 7165. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
