The study identified the quality differences of dried Chinese pomfret (Stromateus chinensis), Bombay duck (Harpodon nehereus) and ribbon fish (Trichiurus haumela) from market and drying center at Kuakata, Patuakhali. The sensory, nutritional and microbial quality of collected dried samples were evaluated following organoleptic quality index, standard AOAC and aerobic plate count methods, respectively. Organoleptically no significant difference found between the samples from market and drying center. The highest moisture content value was obtained in Bombay duck (29.78%) from the market and lowest value in Chinese pomfret (20.06%) from drying center. The highest and lowest protein content was in Chinese pomfret (60.73%) and Bombay duck (47.9%) from drying center and market, respectively. The lipid and ash content varied from 2.85% to 7.20% and 13.98% to 19.57% for all the dried fish species collected from both sites. Microbiologically, higher aerobic plate count (APC), total E. coli count (TEC) and total Salmonella count (TSC) were found in Chinese pomfret at 1.96×106 CFU/g, 3.98×105 CFU/g and 1.62×105 CFU/g from market and lowest count found in Bombay duck at 5.05×105, 2.22×105 and 0.81×105 from drying center, respectively. In ribbon fish no Salmonella sp. was found. Based on the sensory and nutritional quality the study conclude that among three species and two sites studied, the dried Bombay duck from the fish drying center had better quality characteristics than the counter parts. However, higher microbial load especially pathogenic TSC and TEC suggests to improve hygiene and sanitary practices, better market distribution and storage facilities need to be followed by the producers for safe and quality dried fishery products.

The barbugede Pampelfisk, Coryphaena apus Brunnich, 1783, long assumed to be a dolphin, is actually the senior synonym of the Black Pomfret, Parastromateus niger (Bloch, 1795) and the type host of Cymothoa eremita (Brunnich, 1783). Several early works synonomized C. apus with Stromateus paru Bloch, 1786; however, this form was confused with Stromateus (now Peprilus) paru Linnaeus, 1758, at the time and not associated with Stromateus (now Parastromateus) niger. Later, other works synonomized S. paru Bloch with P. niger, but the C. apus synonomy was apparently forgotten. The occurrence and abundance of two isopod parasites, Cymothoa eremita and C. stromei, and a copepod, Lernanthropus koenigii, conclusively demonstrate that Coryphaena apus is P. niger. Two other copepods, Synestius caliginus and Thysanote appendiculata, show S. paru Bloch is P. niger. The original common name of C. apus “bare-bellied pomfret” also identifies P. niger. Summary A combined process for cook-chill products from peeled shrimp (Penaeus indicus) and white pomfret (Stromateus cinereus) steak consisted of 10% brine, 5% tripolyphosphate and steam treatments with storage at 3 ± 0.5°C. the products remained in acceptable microbiological and sensory condition for 25 days.

Some of the earliest writers on Palaeontology were acquainted with the Petrified Fishes not uncommonly found in the Kupferschiefer of Mansfeld and its vicinity, on which Agassiz established his genus Platysomus . Figures are given of these fishes under the name of Rhombus diluvianus major and minor , by Wolfart*, Scheuchzer†, Knorr and Walch‡ and others. More recently De Blainville and Germar have described them, assigning them, in consequence of their deep and flattened forms, to the genus Stromateus §. Agassiz satisfied himself that this determination, founded on outward characters, unaccompanied by structural coincidences, could not stand ∥; at the same time the unusual combination of this form of body with a heterocerqual tail and other anatomical peculiarities evidently raised doubts in his mind as to the true position and affinities of the genus ¶. Mr. King of Newcastle-on-Tyne has recently submitted to me a specimen of Platysomus macrurus from the magnesian limestone of Ferry Hill, which clears up the obscurity that has hitherto enveloped the subject, and provs from the characters of the dentition that this genus should be removed from the Lepidoidei to the Pycnodonti . The dentary portion of the lower jaw, as shown by this specimen, fig. 1, is a dense triangular bone, very similar to the Pycnodont jaws found at Stonesfield and elsewhere. In the course of studies of copepods parasitic on the market fishes of South India two of the most valued fishes, Scomberomorus commersoni and Stromateus niger, were found infested by large numbers of the blood-sucking parasites, Pseudocycnus armata Bas-sett-Smith and Lernanthropus konigii Steenstrup & Lutken. In the present paper the description of Pseudocycnus armata, which was first recorded by Bassett-Smith from Bombay and later by Kirtisinghe from Ceylon, is confined to a more accurate account of the appendages than has been given by these authors, while Lernanthropus konigii, which has not been recorded since it was established in 1861, is fully described.

Examination of the original description and figure shows that the name Stromateus maculatus Forster should not be used for the New Zealand silver warehou; the correct name is Seriolella punctata (.Forster, in Bloch and Schneider).

IN the numbers of NATURE for July 19 and 26 (pp. 227, 248) are communications respecting fish-sheltering Medusae. The Trochurus in Europe appears to be a commensal of the Acaleph as well as the Pollochius. In the eastern waters of the United States, however, so far as I am aware, the Stromatoid fish Poronotus simtlis (Stromateus similis of some authors) seems to be the most common, if not the only associate, of several acalephs, viz., Dactylometra quinquecirra, Zygodactylon graen-landica, and Cyarea arctica. Under the umbrellas of these species small Poronoti are to be found in the late summer swimming, sometimes even to the number of twenty or more, but generally much fewer. Mr. Alexander Agassiz, in his “Sea-side Studies,” mentions the occurrence of an undetermined “Clupeoid” fish, but no other, under the umbrella of Dactylometra quinquecirra; the identification is probably erroneous. At least my own observations were made in the same region and at the same time of the year as Mr. Agassiz's, and only the Poronotus was seen. This is the first report of the genus Tergestia from Pakistan. T. karachiense sp.n. is characterized by possessing relatively long esophagus, intestinal bifurcation in front of the acetabulum, oral lobes 12 in number, scanty irregular vitellaria, testis at the posterior extremity, and* relatively small eggs.
