Abstract

Investigations on antimatter allow us to shed light on fundamental issues of contemporary physics. The only antiatom presently available, antihydrogen, is produced making use of the Antiproton Decelerator (AD) facility at CERN. International collaborations currently on the floor (ALPHA, ASACUSA and ATRAP) have succeeded in producing antihydrogen and are now involved in its confinement and manipulation. The AEGIS experiment is currently completing the commissioning of the apparatus which will generate and manipulate antiatoms. The present paper, after a report on the main results achieved with antihydrogen physics, gives an overview of the AEGIS experiment, describes its current status and discusses its first target.

Abstract

The exotic nucleus 8He is investigated by means of the measurement of the angular distributions of the elastic channel and the 6He and 4He fragment yields produced in the collision with a 208Pb target at two energies around the Coulomb barrier, 16 and 22 MeV. The experiment was performed at the GANIL-SPIRAL facility, with the aim of extracting information about the structure of 8He and the relevant reaction mechanisms. In this contribution, details of the experimental setup and preliminary data on elastic cross sections are reported.

Abstract

The experimental study of the fusion of light neutron-rich nucleus 8He with 206Pb is reported in this work. A fusion stack of 206Pb targets has been used for this study. The most prominent evaporation residue (210Po), which has half-life of 138 days and decays by alpha emission, is populated in the reaction. Radiochemical analysis technique is used to extract the yield of this evaporation residue.

Abstract

The barrier distributions for the 20Ne+58,60,61Ni systems were experimentally determined. In the 58Ni case one observes a distinct “structure” in the distribution (two peaks) which is partially damped for 60Ni and completely smoothed out for 61Ni. It seems that smoothing is caused by non-collective excitations of the target nuclei.

Abstract

The 8He(d,p) reaction was studied in inverse kinematics at 15.4A MeV using the MUST2 Si-CsI array in order to shed light on the level structure of 9He. The well known 16O(d,p)17O reaction, performed here in reverse kinematics, was used as a test to validate the experimental methods. The 9He missing mass spectrum was deduced from the kinetic energies and emission angles of the recoiling protons. Several structures were observed above the neutron-emission threshold and the angular distributions were used to deduce the multipolarity of the transitions. This work confirms that the ground state of 9He is located very close to the neutron threshold of 8He and supports the occurrence of parity inversion in 9He., Comment: Exp\'erience GANIL/SPIRAL1/MUST2

Abstract

The AEgIS experiment at CERN aims to perform the first direct measurement of gravitational interaction between matter and antimatter by measuring the deviation of a cold antihydrogen beam in the Earth gravitational field. The design of the experiment has been recently updated to include emulsion films as position sensitive detector. The submicrometric position accuracy of emulsions leads indeed to a significant improvement of the experimental sensitivity. We present results of preliminary tests and discuss perspectives for the final measurement.

Abstract

International audience; Angular distributions for the inclusive He4 and He6 production cross sections in the He8+Pb208 system at incident energies of 16 and 22 MeV measured at the SPIRAL facility of the GANIL laboratory are presented. Using a combination of kinematical arguments and distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) calculations, neutron transfer reactions were inferred to be the dominant contributors to both inclusive cross sections. Model-dependent values for the ratios of two- to one-neutron stripping, σ2n/σ1n, were derived and compared with previous results for He8 and He6 projectiles incident on other heavy targets. Three- and four-neutron stripping were inferred to be the main processes leading to He4 production, although the exact mechanism remains to be elucidated.

Abstract

Angular distributions of the 11B + 15N elastic and inelastic scattering were measured at Elab (15N) = 84 MeV. The data were analyzed within the optical model and coupled-reaction-channels method. The elastic and inelastic scattering, reorientations of 11B and 15N in ground and excited states as well as the important one- and two-step transfer reactions were included in the channels-coupling-scheme. The 11B + 15N optical potential parameters as well as deformation parameters of these nuclei were deduced. The contributions of one- and two-step transfers in the 11B + 15N elastic and inelastic scattering channels were estimated.

Abstract

The AEgIS experiment at CERN’s Antiproton Decelerator (AD) aims at performing a direct measurement of the gravitational force on antimatter to probe the Weak Equivalence Principle of General Relativity with antimatter. The idea is to measure the vertical displacement of a cold antihydrogen beam, due to the gravitational force, by using a moiré deflectometer. Antihydrogen will be formed through the reaction of charge exchange between cold antiprotons and Rydberg positronium. Abstract

Angular distributions for the inclusive He-4 and He-6 production cross sections in the He-8 + Pb-208 system at incident energies of 16 and 22 MeV measured at the SPIRAL facility of the GANIL laboratory are presented. Using a combination of kinematical arguments and distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) calculations, neutron transfer reactions were inferred to be the dominant contributors to both inclusive cross sections. Model-dependent values for the ratios of two- to one-neutron stripping, sigma(2n)/sigma(1n), were derived and compared with previous results for He-8 and He-6 projectiles incident on other heavy targets. Three- and four-neutron stripping were inferred to be the main processes leading to He-4 production, although the exact mechanism remains to be elucidated.

Abstract

The elastic scattering of the radioactive nucleus Be7 from a Si28 target was studied at four near-barrier energies: 13.2, 17.2, 19.8, and 22.0 MeV (E/VC=1.14, 1.48, 1.71, and 1.90). Angular distribution measurements were performed at each energy with the multidetector array EXPADES in conjunction with two Parallel-Plate Avalanche Counters (PPAC) to enable beam ray reconstruction of the events. The data are analyzed in a double-folding framework and the energy evolution of the optical potential as well as the total reaction cross sections are deduced and discussed. © 2017 American Physical Society.

Abstract

Dramatic differences in the elastic scattering of the neutron rich nuclei 6He and 8He are found when new high quality data for the 8He+208Pb system are compared with previously published 6He+208Pb data at the same laboratory frame incident energy. The new 8He data are of the same level of detail as for stable beams. When comparing them with those previously obtained for 6He+208Pb at the same energy, it is possible to determine from the data alone that 6He has a much longer range absorption than 8He. However, both nuclei show significant absorption beyond their strong absorption radii. While it has been known for a long time that elastic scattering at energies around the barrier only determines the optical potential over a small distance in radial space, typically ±0.5 fm or so, both the 6He and the 8He imaginary potentials obtained from various optical model fits to these data are the same over a much wider range of ±1.5 fm. ispartof: Physical Review C vol:94 issue:6 status: published

Abstract

New angular-distribution data of 13С + 18О elastic and inelastic scattering at the energy Elab(18O) = 105 MeV were obtained for the transitions to the ground and excited states 3.088 MeV(1/2+), 3.555 MeV (1/2-), 3.854 MeV (5/2+) of 13С and 1.982 MeV (2+), 3.555 MeV (4+), 3.921 MeV (2+), 4.456 MeV (1-), 5.098 MeV (3-), 5.260 MeV (2+) of 18O. These and the 13С + 18О elastic scattering data taken from the literature at the energies Elab(18O) = 15, 20, 24, 31 MeV and Elab(13С) = 24 MeV were analysed within the optical model and coupled-reaction-channels methods. Sets of 13С + 18О optical potential parameters and their energy dependence were obtained. Contributions of potential scattering and transfer reactions to the elastic and inelastic channels of 13С + 18О scattering were studied. Isotopic differences (effects) in 12, 13С + 16, 18О optical potential parameters were investigated.

Abstract

The production of α and He3 particles, the cluster constituents of Be7, in the Be7+Si28 reaction was studied at three near-barrier energies, namely 13, 20, and 22 MeV. Angular distribution measurements were performed at each energy, and the data were analyzed in both statistical model and Distorted-Wave Born Approximation (DWBA) frameworks in order to disentangle the degree of competition between direct and compound channels. The energy evolution of the ratio of direct to total reaction cross section was mapped in comparison with similar data for Li6 and Li7 projectiles on a Si28 target. The results indicate larger transfer contributions for collisions involving the mirror nuclei Be7 and Li7 than in the Li6 case. Fusion cross sections were deduced, taking into account the α-particle cross sections due to compound-nucleus formation and particle multiplicities deduced from our statistical model framework. It was found that fusion is compatible with systematics and single-barrier penetration cross sections to within an uncertainty band of 10% to 20%. Indications of fusion hindrance for Li7 and Be7 compared to Li6, starting from the barrier and below it, are given. This hindrance is attributed to the existence of large transfer channels. Furthermore, the experimental results, analyzed in the DWBA framework, suggest He3 and He4 transfer as the dominant direct reaction mechanism. © 2016 American Physical Society.

Abstract

Background: It was suggested that the shape of the barrier height distribution can be determined not only by strong reaction channels (collective excitations) but also by weak channels such as transfers and/or noncollective excitations. Purpose: The study of the barrier height distributions for the 20Ne + 58,60,61Ni systems requires information on transfer cross sections at near-barrier energies. Methods: A measurement of the cross sections for various transfer channels at a backward angle (142 degrees), at a near-barrier energy was performed. Identification of products was based on time-of-flight and E-E methods. A measurement of the angular distribution of α stripping in the 20Ne + 61Ni system was performed using a gas E-E telescope. Results: For all three systems studied: 20Ne + 58Ni, 60Ni, and 61Ni total (sum of all transfer channels) cross sections are similar and dominated by α stripping. Conclusions: The results, as well as coupled reaction channel calculations, suggest that transfer is not responsible for smoothing the barrier height distribution in 20Ne + 61Ni, supporting the hypothesis that barrier distribution shapes are influenced by noncollective excitations. peerReviewed

Abstract

Angular distributions of the 15N+12C elastic and inelastic scattering were measured at Elab(15N) = 81 MeV to study the nuclear-nuclear interactions and possible transfer contributions to the scattering. The data were analyzed with the coupled-reaction-channels (CRC) method using the 15N+12C optical potential ofWoods-Saxon shape. The elastic and inelastic scattering as well as the most obvious one- and two-step transfer reactions were included in the channel-coupling scheme. The 15N+12C optical potential and deformation parameters of 15N were deduced. The transfer reaction contributions to the 15N+12C elastic and inelastic scattering channels were estimated. The 15N+12C elastic scattering at 81 MeV was compared with the 14N+12C elastic scattering of 14N beam energy 78 MeV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Elastic scattering of Be-7+Si-28 was studied at several near barrier energies for probing the energy dependence of the optical potential. Our analysis at 17.2 MeV will be presented in this article and discussed, in terms of Continuum Coupled Channel Calculations (CDCC). This research is part of a long term plan concerning the energy dependence of the optical potential for weakly bound projectiles, at near barrier energies and for probing the potential threshold anomaly. The experiment took place at the EXOTIC facility - Laboratori Nationali di Legnaro (LNL), and refers to an angular distribution measurement, using the detector array EXPADES (Exotic Particle Detection System). Results at 9 MeV (Rutherford region) were also analyzed and were used for estimating the solid angle. Our analysis for other energies is under process.

Abstract

Investigations on antimatter allow us to shed light on fundamental issues of contemporary physics. The only antiatom presently available, antihydrogen, is produced making use of the Antiproton Decelerator (AD) facility at CERN. International collaborations currently on the floor (ALPHA, ASACUSA and ATRAP) have succeeded in producing antihydrogen and are now involved in its confinement and manipulation. The AEGIS experiment is currently completing the commissioning of the apparatus which will generate and manipulate antiatoms. The present paper, after a report on the main results achieved with antihydrogen physics, gives an overview of the AEGIS experiment, describes its current status and discusses its first target.

Abstract

The dynamics of 8He around the Coulomb barrier is investigated by measuring the energy and angular distribution of the elastic 8He and the 6He and 4He fragment yields in the collision process with a 208Pb target. The experiment was carried out at SPIRAL/GANIL in October 2010. The experimental results will provide information about the relevant reaction mechanisms and the validity of the optical model (OM) when applied to exotic nuclei. In this paper, details of the experimental setup and preliminary results on the elastic scattering for the collision at 22 MeV are presented.

44. Backward angle structure in the 20Ne+28Si quasielastic scattering

Abstract

New data for the quasielastic scattering of 20Ne from a 28Si target at incident energies of 42.5 MeV and 52.3 MeV and for the 28Si(20Ne, 24Mg)24Mg, 28Si(20Ne, 16O)32S and 28Si(20Ne, 12C)36Ar transfer reactions at 52.3 MeV are reported. Oscillations are observed in the backward angle quasielastic scattering data at 52.3 MeV and the 28Si( 20Ne, 12C)36Ar transfer cross-sections are of the same magnitude as those for single-α stripping. Coupled reaction channels (CRC) calculations are unable to describe either the quasielastic or the 28Si(20Ne, 12C)36Ar transfer data assuming a sequential α transfer process with α-particle form factors from the literature. The addition of direct 8Be cluster transfer can provide a reasonable description of both data sets, but only with much larger spectroscopic factors than suggested by simple structure calculations or the large 8Be emission thresholds of 20Ne, 28Si and 36Ar, suggesting that the observed structure is of resonance-like origin. An optical model analysis of the quasielastic scattering data is also reported. © 2013 World Scientific Publishing Company.

Abstract

To further our understanding of the influence of weakly coupled channels on the distribution of Coulomb barrier heights, we have measured transfer cross sections for 20Ne ions backscattered from natNi, 118Sn, and 208Pb targets at near-barrier energies. The Q value spectrum in the case of 208Pb target has been determined too. The transfer channels appear to be especially important for 208Pb, whose double-closed-shell nature leads to a relatively low level density for noncollective inelastic excitations. peerReviewed

Abstract

Expérience GANIL/SPIRAL; International audience; The dynamics of 8He around the Coulomb barrier is investigated by measuring the energy and angular distribution of the elastic 8He and the 6He and 4He fragment yields in the collision process with a 208Pb target. The experiment was carried out at SPIRAL/GANIL in October 2010. The experimental results will provide information about the relevant reaction mechanisms and the validity of the optical model (OM) when applied to exotic nuclei. In this paper, details of the experimental setup and preliminary results on the elastic scattering for the collision at 22 MeV are presented.

Abstract

We have measured the angular distributions of elastic scattering and 6,4He fragments produced in the collisions of an exotic beam of 8He on a 208Pb target at laboratory energies of 18 and 22 MeV, just around the Coulomb barrier (19 MeV). The measurements were performed at the SPIRAL/GANIL facility in Caen, France.
