A study has demonstrated the need for neonatal nurses to encourage adolescent mothers to bond with their infants. Teenage mothers combine the stresses of adolescence with the pressures of parenting, and most young women surveyed identified the greatest stresses in the neonatal intensive care unit as the changes in their roles as parents and the appearance and behavior of their infants. Positive parenting can be enhanced by social support, positive personality traits of infants and parents, and knowledge of infant care.

Young adolescents (N = 146, mean age = 11.35, 54% female, 81% Anglo) and young adults (N = 166, mean age = 20.73, 68% female, 82% Anglo) completed questionnaires assessing appraisals of and efforts to cope with three common stressful events, conflicts with mother, a friend, and a failure. For each event, participants rated appraisals of event controllability, including control over event outcomes, event predictability, and perceptions of causal locus (self-culpable, other culpable, and unknown). Additional appraisals rated included event meaningfulness, duration, frequency of occurrence, and stakes/concerns (concerns about one's or another person's well-being). Employment of five coping strategies was rated for each event. Analyses revealed significant correlations among the appraisal and coping variables across the three events. Aggregate variables were computed and significant age differences emerged from analyses of variance. Results of hierarchical multiple regressions suggest that coping is multiply determined. Perceptions of control may be significant predictors for young adolescents, and concerns about other people may be predictive of young adults' responses.

The responses of 673 students, comprising an almost equal number of boys and girls from Year 7 to Year 11 in Melbourne, Australia, to an 80-item questionnaire revealed three different methods adopted by the students to overcome stress in their adolescence. Individuals may try to overcome their problems by themselves, they may turn to others or they may try to cope by emotionally adjusting to their situation. Age, gender and ethnicity influence reactions to various stressful conditions. Boys turn toward physical activities for recreation while girls need emotional support.

The phenomenon of depression and the influence of psychopathology in depressed adolescents can be examined only by experiencing similar stressful experiences. The methods of coping with stress and overcoming adolescent problems lead to depression, which varies among boys and girls. Factors such as biological development and stress in relationships contribute to depression in adolescence. Disorders also occur due to depression.

This study examined the correlations of 21 variables categorized into sociodemographic, subjective quality of life, stress, problem behavior, and health behavior predictors of at-risk and low-risk depressive symptomatology for a sample of 1056 adolescents attending public school. Discriminant function analysis showed lower life satisfaction, higher stress, and perceived unattractiveness as major discriminating variables for at-risk (CES-Depression score>23) versus low-risk depressed adolescents. Only two problem behaviors were significant, smoking for girls and hard drug use for boys.

This study examined stress, depression, attempted suicide, and knowledge of common signs of potential suicide in Alabama adolescents. A modified version of the National Adolescent Student Health Survey (NASHS) was administered to 3,803 eighth- and tenth-grade public school students during the fall of 1988. The incidence of stress, depression, and attempted suicide was analyzed by gender, ethnicity, locale (urban vs. rural), and participation in sexual intercourse and use of alcohol. Chi-square tests were used to determine if there were significant differences between groups. Findings indicated that females were at greater risk than were males. Both males and females who engaged in sexual intercourse and alcohol consumption were at greater risk than were abstainers. When analyzed by ethnicity, white adolescents who engaged in these behaviors were at significantly greater risk than were those who abstained; differences were not as pronounced for black youth. Comparisons on the knowledge scale indicated that females scored better than males, whites scored better than blacks, and urban students scored better than rural students. The data suggest that many adolescents are having difficulty coping with stress and depression, and that those who are engaging in various types of risk-taking behavior are at greater risk for depression and suicide.

G. S. Hall's (1904) view that adolescence is a period of heightened 'storm and stress' is reconsidered in light of contemporary research. The author provides a brief history of the storm-and-stress view and examines 3 key aspects of this view: conflict with parents, mood disruptions, and risk behavior. In all 3 areas, evidence supports a modified storm-and-stress view that takes into account individual differences and cultural variations. Not all adolescents experience storm and stress, but storm and stress is more likely during adolescence than at other ages. Adolescent storm and stress tends to be lower in traditional cultures than in the West but may increase as globalization increases individualism. Similar issues apply to minority cultures in American society. Finally, although the general public is sometimes portrayed by scholars as having a stereotypical view of adolescent storm and stress, both scholars and the general public appear to support a modified storm-and-stress view.
