- Abstract
There is an urgent need for standardized data collection to better understand permafrost thaw and its interaction with vegetation, hydrology, soil and snow. To enable this, the Permafrost Thaw Action Group of T-MOSAiC have developed a protocol for gathering integrated observations of multiple connected components of permafrost landscapes. It is integrated with a user-friendly app aimed at non-experts to facilitate collection and synthesis of data from across the Arctic. Recognizing the fundamental role of interactions between the different components of the permafrost system, we provide measurement guidelines for variables pertaining to snow, vegetation, hydrology, soil and permafrost in a single protocol. The measured variables include snow depth, vegetation height, water level, soil type, and thaw depth. The protocol locates all measurements on transects that are revisited throughout the year. The co-located measurements of multiple variables facilitate quantification of interactions between these variables and model–data integration. The protocol is geared toward non-experts, including citizen scientists. We provide video tutorials and a user-friendly app. The protocol uses simple measurements that do not require specialist equipment or skills. While variables that are more difficult to measure could not be included, we believe that the simplicity of the protocols will enable greater participation in data collection and thus an improved coverage of the permafrost region. Along with the protocol and app, we present the first results from the data collection which has been live now for several months, and details of how to get involved.

- Abstract
Climate change is destabilizing permafrost landscapes, affecting infrastructure, ecosystems and human livelihoods. The rate of permafrost thaw is affected by surface and subsurface properties and processes, all of which are potentially linked with each other. Yet, no standardized protocol exists for measuring permafrost thaw and related processes and properties in a linked manner. The permafrost thaw action group of the Terrestrial Multidisciplinary distributed Observatories for the Study of the Arctic Connections (T-MOSAiC) project has developed a protocol, for use by non-specialist scientists and technicians, citizen scientists and indigenous groups, to collect standardized metadata and data on permafrost thaw. The protocol introduced here addresses the need to jointly measure permafrost thaw and the associated surface and subsurface environmental conditions. The parameters along transects are: snow depth, thaw depth, and vegetation height, soil texture and water level. The metadata collection includes data on timing of data collection, geographical coordinates, land surface characteristics (vegetation, ground surface, water conditions), as well as photographs. The comprehensive description and management of all data with metadata, central data storage and controlled data access is applied through the Observation to Archives (O2A) dataflow framework. Through this standardized procedure, data can be monitored in near-real time and their spatial distribution visualized. The dedicated user-friendly application (app) myThaw facilitates the data entry of field measurements and provides standardized data collection and documentation. We started our first measurements during March 2021 with snow depth measurements at the Bayelva site along a 10 meter transect. Several INTERACT sites in Svalbard, Alaska, Canada and Siberia have also agreed to start this data collection. This openly available dataset will also be highly valuable for validation and parameterization of numerical and conceptual models, thus to the broad community represented by the T-MOSAIC project.

The Global Terrestrial Network for Permafrost (GTN-P) is the primary international programme concerned with sustained long-term monitoring of permafrost.GTN-P was developed in the 1990s by the International Permafrost Association (IPA) under the Global Terrestrial Observing System (GTOS) as part of the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS). The two major components of GTN-P (Essential Climate Variables) are: (a) long-term monitoring of the thermal state of permafrost in an extensive borehole network, theThermal State of Permafrost - TSP; and (b) monitoring of theActive-layer thickness - ALT. - Abstract
Perennially frozen ground and sea ice are key constituents of permafrost coastal systems, and their presence is the primary difference between temperate and high-latitude coastal processes. These systems are some of the most rapidly changing landscapes on Earth and, in the Arctic, are representative of the challenges being faced at the intersection between natural and anthropogenic systems. Permafrost thaw, in combination with increasing sea level and decreasing sea-ice cover, exposes arctic coastal and nearshore areas to rapid environmental and social changes. Based on decadal timescales, observations in the Arctic indicate an increase in permafrost coastal bluff erosion and storm surge flooding of low-lying ice-rich permafrost terrain. However, circum-arctic observations remain limited and the factors responsible for the apparent increase in arctic coastal dynamics are poorly constrained. A better understanding of permafrost coastal systems and how they are responding to changes in the Arctic is important since a high proportion of Arctic residents live on or near coastlines, and many derive their livelihood from terrestrial and nearshore marine resources. An expanding industrial, scientific, and commercial presence in the Arctic Ocean will also require advanced knowledge about permafrost coastlines as terrestrial access points. Since the issues involved span political, cultural, geographical, and disciplinary borders, an international network focused on permafrost coastal systems in transition is needed. An integrative network focused on permafrost coastal systems is required to realize and address the scale and complexity of the processes, dynamics, and responses of this system to physical, ecological, and social change. A primary focus of such an effort would be guided by the fact that the issues and impacts associated with permafrost coastal systems in transition are far greater than any single institution or discipline is capable of addressing alone. Future permafrost coastal system dynamics will challenge conventional wisdom as the system enters a new state impacting human decision making and adaptation planning, cultural heritage resources and ecosystems, and likely resulting in unforeseen challenges across the Arctic.

- Abstract
In 1999, the International Permafrost Association (IPA) established the Global Terrestrial Network for Permafrost (GTN-P, gtnp.org). The goal of the network is systematic and long-term documentation of the distribution, variability, and trends of permafrost (an Essential Climate Variable, ECV) based on a global network of field measurements. The two current cryospheric indicators are permafrost temperature and active layer thickness, throughout the Earth’s permafrost regions. The network has been mainly operated by scientist and research institutions and programs. GTN-P developed a Data Management System (gtnpdatabase.org) for the collection, processing (including standardisation), and dissemination of permafrost data and metadata. Recent ground temperature and active layer thickness data are being compiled to provide an update to the current permafrost state. GTN-P is part of the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) Global Terrestrial Observing System (GTOS). GCOS is a joint undertaking of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Council for Science (ICSU). Permafrost temperature measurements, commonly performed with permanently installed multi-thermistor cables in boreholes, enable a good accuracy of 0.1°C. The logger resolution and measurement frequency, however, varies with the type and the depth of the individual borehole. Due to high geomorphological surface and subground dynamics, the relative vertical position of testing probes can change and bias the depth indications of old boreholes in sensitive areas. Most important quality concerns are measurement accuracy, zero annual amplitude depth, data gaps, incomplete time series, and spatial clustering of boreholes. We developed a methodological approach to filter the data by defined quality rules in order to calculate global to regional weighted averages of permafrost temperature anomalies. In this presentation we aim to give an overview on the systematical data pathway from borehole principal investigators over National Correspondents in GTN-P, followed by data processing algorithms in the GTN-P DMS towards quality checked time series data.
