Abstract

The article presents a study which examines the behaviour of giraffe mothers after the death of their calves. The authors of the study observed Rothschild's giraffes in Soysambu Conservancy, Kenya and Masai giraffes in Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. It reveals that each observed mother remained near the site of death calves for three to four consecutive days.

Abstract

The article discusses a research study which observes the retention and separation of umbilical stump of newborn Masai giraffes in Tanzania's Serengeti National Park. Findings reveal that 39 out of 137 calves observed had an umbilical stump at first sighting from less than a week to 10-14 weeks, while 25 calves without umbilical stump were 2-3 months of age. The importance of precise age estimation on the study's results is also mentioned.
