The long-term (1980−2018) data on the water temperature regime and associated synoptic processes in favorable and unfavorable years of the abundance formation and the pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha return to the rivers of the Sea of Japan coast in Primorskii krai have been analyzed. It is shown that low catches of Primorye pink salmon at the end of the past century were accompanied by negative temperature anomalies in the coastal waters and increasing catches during the first two decades of the new century were accompanied by positive temperatures anomalies. Pink salmon returns to rivers at the sea-water temperature 8.6−14.9°С, and values below 3.0–4.0°С are one of the reasons of redistribution of anadromous migratory flows of pink salmon in the Primorye subzone. The synoptic and hydrological situation at different intensity of pink salmon return is described using concrete examples. With a high frequency of cold air troughs typical for the first cold stage of the Far Eastern monsoon caused by the Okhotsk anticyclone, the pink salmon return was delayed and extremely high catches were recorded when the second (warm) stage of the summer monsoon strengthened due to spreading of the Hawaiian anticyclone in the Sea of Japan. Polar mesocyclones (PMCs) occur frequently over the northern Sea of Japan. In the present study, topographic effects on PMC genesis in this region were investigated using long-term numerical simulations extending over 36 winter seasons. Sensitivity experiments showed that PMC genesis decreases in the part of the northern Sea of Japan when the mountain region at the eastern end of the Eurasian continent is removed. For instance, the generation of PMCs over offshore west of Hokkaido decreases significantly when the mountain range is removed, whereas the generation of PMCs over the Strait of Tartary remains unchanged. According to a composite analysis, this result can be attributed to the different responses of subregional oceanic surface wind to the removal of the mountains. In the experiment without mountains, cold air outbreaks from the continent blow directly over the Sea of Japan causing strong westerly winds over the offshore west of Hokkaido. Consequently, PMCs tend to make landfall earlier and before reaching maturity. The uniformly distributed westerly wind also has a negative impact on PMC genesis because of weakened horizontal wind shear and meridional temperature gradient. By contrast, the low-level wind over the Strait of Tartary before PMC genesis is unaffected by the mountains, and thus, topographic effects are not required for PMC genesis in this region. The ichthyoplankton of the upper epipelagic zone (0–50 m) was studied in the northern part of the Sea of ​​Japan in July–August 2017. Eggs of seven fish species and larvae of five fish species from five families were recorded off the coast of Primorye; eggs of six species from five families and larvae of 12 species from seven families, in the Strait of Tartary. Eggs and larvae of four species of the Pleuronectidae family (Limanda punctatissima, Glyptocephalus stelleri, Cleisthenes herzensteini, and Acanthopsetta nadeshnyi) prevailed everywhere. Off the coast of Primorye, Cl. herzensteini dominated, and in the Strait of Tartary, L. punctatissima. In comparison with the results of the Kuril-Sakhalin expedition performed the late 1940s, the eggs of pelagic fish species, such as Engraulis japonicus, Cololabis saira, and Scomber japonicus, was found in small quantities and only in the surface water layer. The results allow us to report on slight changes in the species composition relative to the middle of the last century, on the one hand, and significant changes in the dominant species, on the other.
