Der Band versammelt in interdisziplinärer Perspektive verschiedene ak­tuelle Ansätze zur Erforschung der Geschichte von Verkehrsinformations­systemen. Er fragt dabei nach Entwicklungsverläufen, Gestaltungen und Gestalter:innen vom analogen Verkehrsfunk bis hin zur digitalen Navigati­on und Verkehrssteuerung.

This study aimed to plan an alternative for community street lighting in an older community by simulating illuminance improvements. We applied the natural surveillance principle of crime prevention through environmental design to an older community in Busan Metropolitan City in South Korea. We conducted four field investigations to identify lighting sources and measure their illuminance and heights. Using the Relux Pro program, the gaps in lighting were identified and alternative plans for improvement for night lighting were simulated. Narrow alleys and houses were sources of light disruption and lighting blind spots. We determined the location and type of lighting within the community and considered the continuity necessary to meet natural surveillance standards in alternative settings. We considered visibility, facial recognition, the risk of traffic accidents, and other variables (i.e., lamp type). Our results confirmed that the community’s average horizontal illuminance met the requirement of the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards and the minimal illuminance criterion of the International Commission on Illumination in all community lighting spaces—which was improved by about 2.2% to 85.7% compared to the previous situation. The results of this study are meaningful in that they present an effective planning support tool using simulation methods to establish community street lighting alternatives and determine their suitability.

Urban streets are an integral part of the public realm. Streets are commonly planned following normative design principles focused on the connectivity of road networks and urban morphology. Beyond their function as mobility infrastructure, streetscapes’ aesthetic, social, and cultural qualities also have an important impact on the experience of the overall urban environment and human well-being. This study explores how urban design and planning can facilitate the design, management, and use of streetscapes that consider their role as social infrastructure. A paradigmatic case study of Hornsbergs Strand in the City of Stockholm is performed, incorporating spatial and temporal aspects. The case study area is chosen because it is both an attractive and “overcrowded” public space frequently discussed in the Swedish media. Data sources for the study include reviews of public documents such as Stockholm’s city planning strategies, local media reports, a report from a resident workgroup, as well as walk-through observations and semi-structured expert interviews. The results highlight the potential of urban design strategies to develop streetscapes as social infrastructure through both permanent design measures and temporary design interventions. The tendency of the change in people’s perception and attitude toward the place over time illustrates that design interventions are a continual process. The implications for public policy, urban development and investment in social infrastructure employing place strategies and design interventions are discussed.

In jüngster Zeit wird die Verteilung des öffentlichen Straßenraums durch verschiedene Akteur:innen vermehrt diskutiert und problematisiert. So wird die vermeintliche Dominanz des motorisierten Individualverkehrs (MIV) kritisiert und eine Umverteilung des öffentlichen Straßenraums gefordert. Gleichzeitig gibt es keine umfassende wissenschaftliche Datengrundlage, die sich mit der Verteilung des öffentlichen Straßenraums und ihrer Bewertung auseinandersetzt. Die vorliegende Arbeit analysiert die Verteilung des öffentlichen Straßenraums im Berliner Bezirk Mitte und nimmt eine Bewertung dieser Verteilung vor. Für die Bewertung der Verteilung wird ein eigens entwickelter Ansatz genutzt, der auf den Erkenntnissen anderer wissenschaftlicher Studien beruht und das Gemeinwohl in das Zentrum der Bewertung stellt. Die Ergebnisse dieser Untersuchung zeigen, dass der öffentliche Straßenraum in Mitte hauptsächlich auf Flächen des MIV entfällt, gefolgt von Flächen des Fußverkehrs, des Radverkehrs und des ÖPNV. Die Bewertung der Flächenverteilung zeigt zudem, dass die aktuelle Flächenverteilung anhand des gewählten Bewertungsansatzes nicht dem Gemeinwohl dient und hauptsächlich Haushalten mit einem hohen ökonomischen Status und einem eigenen Pkw nutzt. Haushalte mit einem niedrigen ökonomischen Status profitieren hingegen am wenigsten von der aktuellen Flächenverteilung. Recently, the distribution of public street space has been increasingly discussed and problematized by various actors. The supposed dominance of motorized private transport is criticised, and a redistribution of public road space is demanded. At the same time, there is no comprehensive scientific data basis that deals with the distribution of public street space and its evaluation. This thesis analyses the distribution of public street space in Berlin's Mitte district and assesses this distribution. A specially developed approach is used to evaluate the distribution, which is based on the findings of other scientific studies and places the common good at the centre of the evaluation. The results of this study show that the public street space in Mitte is mainly made up of spaces for motorized private transport, followed by spaces for pedestrian traffic, bicycle traffic and public transport. The evaluation of the spatial distribution also shows that the current distribution based on the selected evaluation approach does not serve the common good and is mainly useful for households with a high economic status and an own car. Households with a low economic status, on the other hand, benefit least from the current distribution of space.

Die Praxis des Straßenfußballs orientiert sich weniger am Konzept der messbaren Leistung und dem objektiven Vergleich als an qualitativen Stilmerkmalen. Deshalb ist Straßenfußball eher unter den Prämissen des Trendsports im Sinne einer Agglomeration von Stilen, virtuosen Tricks und Selbstinszenierungen zu verstehen als unter denen des vereinsgebundenen Wettkampfsports. Im folgenden Beitrag werden auf der Grundlage ethnographischer Daten die Stilpraktiken von Kindern und Jugendlichen beim Straßenfußball im Hinblick auf ihr normatives und exklusives Potential zur Teilhabe an der jugendlich geprägten Peer erörtert. Dabei wird deutlich, dass der spezifische Stil auf Ästhetiken der Männlichkeit verweist und entlang männlicher Attribute seine normative Kraft entfaltet. The practice of street football is rather based on qualitative style features, than on the concept of measurable performance and objective comparison. This is why street football is more likely to be understood under the premises of trend sport in the sense of an agglomeration of styles, virtuoso tricks and self-presentation than under those of club-related competitive sport. On the basis of ethnographic date, the following article will discuss the style practices of children and adolescents in street football with regard to their normative and exclusive potential for participation in the youthful peer. It becomes clear that the specific style refers to the aesthetics of masculinity and unfolds its normative power along masculine attributes.

This paper uses a generalized estimating equations approach to investigate the willingness of street hawkers in Accra to exit their trade when offered viable alternatives. We observe a direct relationship between willingness to exit hawking and age. Willingness to exit hawking declines over increasing experience. Hawkers who have encountered arrest are less likely to exit. Also, hawkers who received financial assistance to facilitate their business are less likely to exit. Plus, monthly savings from hawking may indirectly influence a rejection of the offer to start an alternative trade. Finally, the willingness to quit hawking is not significantly influenced by gender, sales revenue, and the road description in the model. The results of the analysis could help improve the success of future intervention programmes.

Um die Lebensdauer kommunaler Straßen zu verlängern, müssen Straßenschäden frühzeitig erkannt werden. Die Erkennung erfolgt, jedoch, meistens manuell oder mithilfe von speziell ausgestatteten Fahrzeugen. Dieses Verfahren ist zeit- und kostenaufwändig. In dieser Arbeit wird eine Methodik zur automatisierten Erkennung von Straßenschäden auf Basis von Maschinellen Sehens präsentiert. Fotos der Straßenoberfläche werden in Echtzeit auf Grafikprozessoren (GPU) analysiert, während Fahrzeuge wie PKWs, Busse und Taxis auf ihren üblichen Routen fahren. Mithilfe von Deep Learning werden die Schäden nach Art klassifiziert (Risse, Schlaglöcher, Flickstellen). Die Fotos werden durch den Einsatz eines Global Positioning System Empfängers mit einem Geotag versehen. Zum Testen der Methodik wurden 38 000 Fotos aufgenommen. Der Ansatz erreichte eine Genauigkeit von 93%.

Die Arbeit "Strukturanalyse von Asphaltbefestigungen unter Verwendung des Georadarmessverfahrens" befasst sich mit der Nutzbarkeit des Georadars zur Strukturuntersuchung an Asphaltbefestigungen. Dabei steht die Detektion der Asphaltschichten, die Erkennbarkeit und Visualisierung enthaltener Strukturen, wie Substanzschädigungen, sowie die Untersuchung messtechnischer Einstellungen im Fokus. Durch die technische Weiterentwicklung des Verfahrens stellen sich hierbei die Fragen hinsichtlich der aktuellen Einsatzmöglichkeiten und -grenzen. Die Arbeit umfasste dazu ein Messprogramm, welches auf einer Versuchsstrecke aus sechs Probefeldern und zwei standardisierten Asphaltbauweisen basierte. Hierbei war eine Vielzahl ausgewählter Substanzschädigungen, wie z.B. Risse, in der Versuchsstrecke integriert. Für die Eruierung messtechnischer Einstellungen wurde ferner ein Variantenvergleich, zur Einschätzung unterschiedlicher Datendichten und des Auflösungsvermögens, durchgeführt., The work "Structural analysis of asphalt pavements using the Ground Penetrating Radar" deals with the usability of the Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) for structural investigations on asphalt pavements. The focus is on the detection of asphalt layers, the recognition and visualisation of contained structures, such as structural damages, as well as the investigation of metrological settings. Due to the technical development of the method, questions regarding the current application possibilities and limits arise. The work included a measurement program based on a test track consisting of six test fields and two standardized asphalt constructions. A large number of selected structural damages, such as cracks, were integrated into the test track. For the determination of technical measurement settings, a comparison of variants was also carried out to estimate different data densities and the resolution capacity.

Die Belege werden in Gruppen eingeteilt, die unterschiedliche Funktionen besitzen: Hodonyme mit einer eine Richtung zeigenden Funktion, Hodonyme mit einer Lokalisationsfunktion, possessive Straßennamen, Straßennamen mit charakterisierender Funktion, Erinnerungsfunktion der Hodonyme. Außerdem wird die Aufmerksamkeit des Lesers auf das Phänomen der thematischen Straßennamenfelder gerichtet. Aus der Analyse geht wiederum eindeutig hervor, dass die Straßen- bzw. Siedlungsnamen sowohl von den Russen im ausgehenden 19. Jh. als auch von den NS-Deutschen im 20. Jh. nicht abgeändert wurden: Die polnischen Benennungen konnten in den fremden Sprachsystemen erfolgreich adaptiert und benutzt werden.

Urbane Räume sehen sich verschiedenen ökologischen, sozialen und ökonomischen Herausforderungen gegenüber, für deren Bewältigung es unter anderem neue bzw. veränderte Handlungs- und Planungsansätze bedarf. Der Klimawandel mit seinen räumlich wirksamen Folgewirkungen ist eine der zentralen ökologischen Herausforderungen des 21. Jahrhunderts. Städte sind dabei sowohl Verursacher des Klimawandels als auch Betroffene. Sie sind Wohnort, Heimat, Arbeits- und Produktionsstätte. Durch ihre hohe Bevölkerungsdichte und durch die Agglomeration ökonomischen Kapitals sind Städte aber auch stark durch Extremereignisse wie Starkniederschläge und Hitzeperioden gefährdet. Grüne Infrastrukturen können daher nicht nur eine Strategie sein, um sich gegen die Klimawandelfolgen anzupassen, sondern bieten gleichzeitig das Potenzial für neue Lebensräume, um so das Artensterben zu mindern bzw. zu stoppen. Die vorliegende Konzeptstudie widmet sich der Frage, wie Straßen im Sinne des genannten Zieldreiecks weiterentwickelt und gestaltet werden können, d.h. wie eine Transformation urbaner Quartiersstraßen hin zu "lebenswerten" Stadt- und Straßenräumen erfolgen kann.

Der Themenkomplex des automatisierten und vernetzten Fahrens wird immer aktueller und stellt die Gesellschaft vor Herausforderungen in zahlreichen Bereichen. Einer davon ist die Sicherstellung der Zuverlässigkeit von Fahrfunktionen. Die aktuell angewandte streckenkilometerbasierte Methode ist zu zeit- und ressourcenaufwändig, um im großen Maßstab für das Prüfen jeder neu entwickelten Fahrfunktion und die einhergehenden Software-Updates verwendet zu werden. Ein Lösungsansatz besteht in szenariobasierten Simulationen. In aktuellen Projekten wird der Schwerpunkt auf die zu simulierende Verkehrsdynamik, nicht aber auf die Berücksichtigung der Umgebungsvariablen gelegt. Damit diese Simulationen nicht nur auf künstlich generierten und mathematisch-perfekt modellierten Streckenrepräsentation durchgeführt werden, sondern auch Modelle szenarienkonformer, real existierender Strecken als Simulationsgrundlage genutzt werden können, untersucht diese Arbeit, unter welchen Umständen sich Realdaten-Streckenabschnitte parameterbasiert und automatisch identifizieren lassen. Für diesen Zweck ist ein Algorithmus entwickelt und implementiert worden, der in OpenDRIVE-Daten deutscher Autobahnen nach Streckenabschnitten sucht, die den Vorgaben von Szenarien aus dem Kontext des Automotive-Forschungsprojekts PEGASUS entsprechen. Eine solche Streckenidentifikation stellt sich als durchführbar heraus, aber der zu betreibende Aufwand ist stark realdatenformat- und parameterabhängig. In einem Zwischenschritt des Identifikationsvorgangs fallen Daten an, anhand derer einfach festzustellen ist, an welcher Stelle des realen Streckenverlaufs sich bestimmte Eigenschaften der Strecke ändern. Diese Zwischenergebnisse können als Grundlage für eine umfassende Parametrisierungen von Vermessungsdaten dienen.

Public spaces go beyond the typical definition of being an open space. They reflect the diversity and vibrancy of the urban fabric and hold the power to create memories. Among all public spaces, streets emerge as the most public. Streets are engines of economic activities, social hubs, and platforms for civic engagement. They break socio-economic divides and foster social cohesion. Planning, designing, and managing better public spaces have become important global discussions. Sustainable Development Goals (8 and 11) and the New Urban Agenda emphasize the significance of inclusive and sustainable economy and safe, accessible and quality public spaces for all. The proposed article uses the case of street vending to understand the manifestation of these goals in an Indian context by assessing street vendors’ role in Ahmedabad’s urban fabric through extensive spatial analysis of 4,000 vendors at four different time points of the day, perception studies of their clientele disaggregated by gender, income and age, and their relationship with surrounding land-use and street hierarchy. It showcases how street vendors make the streets more vibrant by increasing activities, safer through ensuring inflow of people, and inclusive in its true sense by allowing people from different backgrounds to participate in the exchange of goods and services. It further argues that street vendors are vital elements of more equitable and exciting streets and public space.

Im Artikel werden die Tendenzen in den Strasen- und Platznamen in ausgewahlten Ortschaften des Landkreises Busko-Zdroj untersucht. Die Belege werden in verschiedene Gruppen aufgegliedert, die verschiedene Funktionen haben: Hodonyme mit einer Richtungsfunktion, Hodonyme mit einer Lokalisationsfunktion, possessive Strasennamen, Strasennamen mit charakterisierender Funktion, Erinnerungsfunktion der Hodonyme. Nazwy ulic nie są jedynie wyrazami posiadającymi funkcję orientacyjną i wskazującą, lecz również są często nośnikami treści z obszaru polityki i kultury. Poniżej prezentowane są wyniki analizy motywacji przemianowywania ulic w wybranych miejscowościach niegdysiejszego nazistowskiego powiatu buskiego podczas II wojny światowej. Przed analizą należałoby oczekiwać, iż powodem takich kroków ze strony władz okupacyjnych była chęć zarówno wyrażenia swojej siły i ideologii na okupowanych terenach, jak również usunięcia takich nazw ulic i placów z przestrzeni publicznej oraz społecznej, które stały w sprzeczności z polityką i kulturą narodowego socjalizmu podczas II wojny światowej. Celem poniższej pracy jest prezentacja procesu zmiany nazw ulic i placów w wybranych miejscowościach. Przykłady prezentowane w artykule zostały pogrupowane ze względu na funkcję nazwy ulicy. Z analizy jednoznacznie wynika też, iż Niemcy albo bez zmian przejęli polski hodonim, albo tylko go zniemczyli nie zmieniając jego funkcji, na podstawie czego widać, iż polski językowy obraz świata mógł bez przeszkód funkcjonować również w świadomości innej społeczności językowej. The street designations do not enable only the topographical-spatial orientation, because they are also the carriers of the political and cultural contents. The paper is written about the results of the trends’ analysis in the change of the names of streets in the chosen places of the Busko County during the Second World War. The reason of these steps was primarily to express the Nazi power and ideology in the names of the streets, as well as to remove from the public and social space the designations which clashed with the Nazi politics and culture. The purpose of this article is to present how the names of streets and squares were changed. The examples which were shown in the article are sorted because of the function of the names. In this analysis it is also exposed that the German converted the Polish hodonyms without changing their names or their functions. In this way it can be seen, that the German people accepted the Polish language world picture and used it in their own language during their presence on the occupied areas of Poland. Straßennamenschilder besitzen nicht nur die Orientierungs- und Hinweisefunktion, sondern sind auch Träger von Inhalten aus dem Bereich der Politik und Kultur. Es werden hier die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung der Straßenumbenennungsmotivierung in ausgewählten Ortschaften der ehemaligen Kreisstadt Busko während des Zweiten Weltkrieges präsentiert. Der Grund einer solchen Politik war, sowohl die nationalsozialistische Macht und Ideologie in den besetzten Gebieten zum Ausdruck zu bringen als auch die im Widerspruch zur NS-Politik und Kultur stehenden Hodonyme aus dem öffentlichen Raum zu entfernen. Das Ziel des Beitrags ist es, darzustellen, wie Straßen- und Platznamen umbenannt wurden. Die Belege wurden im Hinblick auf die Funktion des Hodonyms sortiert. Aus der Erforschung des Sprachmaterials geht ebenfalls eindeutig hervor, dass die Deutschen die polnischen Straßenbezeichnungen entweder unverändert annahmen oder sie nur eindeutschten, ohne deren Funktionen zu verändern, sodass es sichtbar wird, dass das polnische sprachliche Weltbild auch im Bewusstsein einer anderen Sprachgemeinschaft reibungslos funktionierte

Dieser Bericht beschreibt Ergebnisse einer Untersuchung wie gut Amphibientunnel und -leitsysteme in der Schweiz ihren Zweck erfüllen. Es wurde eine Akzeptanz- und Erfolgskontrolle unterschiedlicher Anlagetypen durchgeführt zur Nutzung durch Kröten und Frösche sowie deren langfristigen Populationsentwicklungen in den Untersuchungsgebieten. In verschiedenen Regionen der Schweiz sollten unterschiedliche Anlagetypen und Materialisierungen vergleichend geprüft werden, welche unterschiedliche „Epochen“ des Amphibienschutzes an Strassen (Anlagen über 30 Jahre alt) und Konstruktionsprinzipien repräsentieren. Begleitend untersucht wurden Fragen zum Unterhalt der Anlagen und deren möglichen Auswirkungen auf deren Funktionalität. Darauf aufbauend werden Hinweise und Massnahmen für die Praxis sowie weiterführender Handlungs- und Forschungsbedarf aufgezeigt. Die Ergebnisse der Forschungsarbeiten dienen konkret der Ausarbeitung von Strassenverkehrsnormen sowie technischen Planungen im Bereich von Strassenprojekten mit Schutzanforderungen für Amphibien. Mit den Projektergebnissen können Aussage gemacht werden, ob die in der Regel teuren Anlagen ihr Geld wert sind und es lassen sich Empfehlungen bezüglich Unterhalt ableiten. Weiter erlaubt das Projekt Aussagen über Eigenschaften der Anlagen, welche helfen, Bau und Unterhalt in Zukunft zu optimieren.

Der vorliegende Beitrag präsentiert die in Chronik meiner Straße entwickelten Strategien der literarischen Topographie. Die Autorin des Artikels versucht, den im Schreibverfahren skizzierten topographischen Elementen im neuesten Buch Barbara Honigmanns nachzuspüren. Der Text wird in Anlehnung an die Raumkonzeptionen von J. Hillis Miller, Michel Foucault und Marc Augé interpretiert. The article presents the strategies of literary topographies, that the writer has included in her new work. The author of the article concentrated her efforts on grasping the performed act to sketch the topography in the text, and completed the analysis based on J. Hillis Miller, Michel Foucault and Marc Augé concept of a space. W artykule zaprezentowane zostały zastosowane przez pisarkę literackie strategie topograficzne. Autorka artykułu koncentruje się na uchwyceniu perfomatywnego aktu szkicowania topografii w tekście, dokonując analizy w oparciu o koncepcje przestrzeni J. Hillisa Millera, Michela Foucault i Marka Augé.

De récentes fouilles archéologiques menées dans le cadre de la reconversion du clos de l’Antiquaille, à Lyon, tant en sous-sol que sur le bâti, ont permis de mettre en lumière la configuration des terrasses romaines aménagées sur le versant oriental de la colline de Fourvière. Bordées par des rues antiques au nord et à l’ouest, ces terrasses sont retenues, à l’est, par un imposant mur de soutènement à l’architecture complexe. Ces aménagements, indispensables à l’urbanisation et au développement de la ville antique sur les pentes, ont durablement marqué le paysage et ont été intégrés dans les soubassements de plusieurs constructions modernes. In advance of the future conversion of the “clos de l’Antiquaille” in Lyon/Lugdunum (France), recent archaeological surveys and building studies has shed light on the shape of the roman terraces settled on the eastern slope of the Fourvière hill. These terraces, which are lined by roman streets north and west, are retained on the east by a massive and complexly built supporting wall. These structures enabled the urbanisation and the extension of the antique city on the slopes of the hill ; they have put their mark on the urban landscape for long and have been later incorporated into the basements of several modern buildings. Im Rahmen der Umnutzung des Clos de l’Antiquaille wurden in Lyon kürzlich Ausgrabungen vorgenommen, die sowohl den Untergrund als auch den Baukörper betrafen. Sie haben es ermöglicht die Gestalt der römischen Terrassen am Osthang des Hügels von Fourvière besser zu erfassen. Im Norden und Westen werden die Terrassen von antiken Straßen gesäumt und im Osten von einer imposanten Stützmauer mit komplexer Architektur. Diese Anlagen waren für die städtebauliche Erschließung und Entwicklung der antiken Stadt an den Hanglagen notwendig ; sie haben die Landschaft nachhaltig geprägt und wurden in die Sockel mehrerer moderner Bauten integriert.

Der vorliegende Beitrag präsentiert die in "Chronik meiner Straße" entwickelten Strategien der literarischen Topographie. Die Autorin des Artikels versucht, den im Schreibverfahren skizzierten topographischen Elementen im neuesten Buch Barbara Honigmanns nachzuspüren. Der Text wird in Anlehnung an die Raumkonzeptionen von J. Hillis Miller, Michel Foucault und Marc Augé interpretiert. The article presents the strategies of literary topographies, that the writer has included in her new work. The author of the article concentrated her efforts on grasping the performed act to sketch the topography in the text, and completed the analysis based on J. Hillis Miller, Michel Foucault and Marc Augé concept of a space. W artykule zaprezentowane zostały zastosowane przez pisarkę literackie strategie topograficzne. Autorka artykułu koncentruje się na uchwyceniu perfomatywnego aktu szkicowania topografii w tekście, dokonując analizy w oparciu o koncepcje przestrzeni J. Hillisa Millera, Michela Foucault i Marka Augé.

Der Zustand der sächsischen Staatsstraßen ist unbefriedigend und bedarf dringend einer nachhaltigen Verbesserung. Im Jahr 2013 befanden sich rd. 42 % der Straßen in einem ungenügenden Zustand, der den Schwellenwert bereits überschritten hat. Ohne zeitnahes Gegensteuern wird sich der Zustand des sächsischen Straßennetzes weiter verschlechtern. Bei den Ingenieurbauwerken sind rund zwei Drittel aller Bauwerke in einem mindestens zufriedenstellenden Zustand. Der Zustand hängt wesentlich von der Investitionshöhe ab. Die Investitionen für die Straßeninfrastruktur setzen sich aus den Ausgaben für den Um-, Aus- und Neubau sowie den auf die Erneuerung entfallenden Erhaltungsausgaben zusammen. Reverdin, Gilles ... et. al.-- Special issue on SPURS: Salinity Processes in the Upper-ocean Regional Study.-- 10 pages, 7 figures, We investigated a 100 × 100 km high-salinity region of the North Atlantic subtropical gyre during the Sub-Tropical Atlantic Surface Salinity Experiment/Salinity Processes in the Upper-ocean Regional Study (STRASSE/SPURS) cruise from August 21, 2012, to September 9, 2012. Results showed great variability in sea surface salinity (SSS; over 0.3 psu) in the mesoscale, over 7 cm of total evaporation, and little diapycnal mixing below 36 m depth, the deepest mixed layers encountered. Strong currents in the southwestern part of the domain, and the penetration of freshwater, suggest that advection contributed greatly to salinity evolution. However, it was further observed that a smaller cyclonic structure tucked between the high SSS band and the strongest currents contributed to the transport of high SSS water along a narrow front. Cross-frontal transport by mixing is also a possible cause of summertime reduction of SSS. The observed structure was also responsible for significant southward salt transport over more than 200 km. © 2015 by The Oceanography Society.
