5. Large heat flux in electrocaloric multilayer capacitors

Abstract

Multi Layer Capacitors MLCs are considered as the most promising refrigerant elements to design and develop electrocaloric cooling devices. Recently, the heat transfer of these MLCs has been considered. However, the heat exchange with the surrounding environment has been poorly, if not, addressed. In this work, we measure by infrared thermography the temperature change versus time in four different heat exchange configurations. Depending on the configurations, Newtonian and non-Newtonian regimes with their corresponding Biot number are determined allowing to provide useful thermal characteristics. Indeed, in case of large area thermal pad contacts, heat transfer coefficients up to 3400 W m-2 K-1 are obtained showing that the standard MLCs already reach the needs for designing efficient prototypes. We also determine the ideal Brayton cooling power in case of thick wires contact which varies between 3.4 mW and 9.8 mW for operating frequencies varying from 0.25 Hz to 1 Hz. While only heat conduction is considered here, our work provides some design rules for improving heat exchanges in future devices.

Abstract

Artykuł opisuje i analizuje zespół sześciu herbów wygrawerowanych na stopie gotyckiego krzyża relikwiarzowego z XIV-XV wieku (obiekt nie jest jednorodny), znajdującego się w muzeum w Sandomierzu. Krzyż właściwy z emaliowanymi plakietami został wykonany w XIV wieku, a w wieku XV dodano mu puszkę relikwiarzową i podstawę, na której umieszczono herby. Analiza programu heraldycznego wskazuje, że zespół herbów należy datować na 1440 rok i łączyć z osobą króla Władysława III (Warneńczyka). Tym samym, przyjęte dotąd w literaturze przedmiotu datowanie puszki relikwiarzowej i podstawy krzyża na drugą połowę XV wieku należy skorygować na lata 1439-1440, a dorobione wówczas elementy krzyża uznać – wbrew starszym poglądom – za królewską fundację Władysław III.

Abstract

During rescue excavations at Site 1 in Kotowo in 1958, a ceramic tube was discovered in a feature of the Funnel Beaker culture. Currently, XRF analysis suggests that it is a ceramic tuyère associated with copper processing. The feature, radiocarbon dated to 3911–3714 BC (68.3% probability), most likely housed a metalworking workshop. The artefact from Kotowo has several analogues in the Polish lands, mainly from sites of the Lengyel-Polgár culture. With a clear and well-documented cultural context, it testifies to the existence of the oldest metallurgical workshop so far known in the Funnel Beaker culture.

Abstract

One of the most interesting categories of artifacts for archaeometallurgical research includes deposits of bronze items, so-called “metallurgists hoards”. They contain, aside of final products, many fragments of raw material and, moreover, metallurgical tools. An important source for the studies on the history of metallurgical technology is hoard from Przybysław, Greater Poland district. Thus, the aim of the work is the identification and interpretation of bronze-working practices and strategies adopted by prehistoric communities of the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age (ca. 600 BC). The examined objects are characterized in terms of their design, structure, and chemical composition. The methods chosen for the studies of artifacts include: metallographic macro- and microscopic observations using optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the analysis of chemical composition with the methods of energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF). The thermodynamic analysis of the alloys was performed on the basis of the CALPHAD method. The experimental melts allowed to verify the theoretical considerations and to determine the characteristic temperatures of changes. The old casting technology can be analyzed basing on computer modeling and computer simulation methods. Simulations in the MAGMASOFT® software are a good example to illustrate how to fill a mould cavity with a molten bronze for a hoop ornament. It is also an appropriate tool to determine temperature distribution in a mould. The simulations also show the possible disadvantages with this old technology.

Abstract

Introduction: This paper presents its kinematic-dynamic computational model (3D) used for numerical simulations of the unilateral chewing of selected foods. The model consists of two temporomandibular joints, a mandible, and mandibular elevator muscles (the masseter, medial pterygoid, and temporalis muscles). The model load is the food characteristic (i), in the form of the function Fi = f(Δhi)−force (Fi) vs change in specimen height (Δhi). Functions were developed based on experimental tests in which five food products were tested (60 specimens per product).Methods: The numerical calculations aimed to determine: dynamic muscle patterns, maximum muscle force, total muscle contraction, muscle contraction corresponding to maximum force, muscle stiffness and intrinsic strength. The values of the parameters above were determined according to the mechanical properties of the food and according to the working and non-working sides.Results and Discussion: Based on the numerical simulations carried out, it can be concluded that: (1) muscle force patterns and maximum muscle forces depend on the food and, in addition, the values of maximum muscle forces on the non-working side are 14% lower than on the working side, irrespective of the muscle and the food; (2) the value of total muscle contraction on the working side is 17% lower than on the non-working side; (3) total muscle contraction depends on the initial height of the food; (4) muscle stiffness and intrinsic strength depend on the texture of the food, the muscle and the side analysed, i.e., the working and non-working sides.

21. Effect of a low-FODMAP diet for the management of functional abdominal pain disorders in children: a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

Abstract

Abstract Background Evidence from studies in adults documents that fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAPs) may be triggers of symptoms in individuals with functional abdominal pain disorders (FAPDs). However, in children, the evidence is very limited. We aim to assess the effects of a low-FODMAP diet compared with a regular diet for the management of children with FAPDs. Methods We will perform a randomized, quadruple-blinded, controlled trial. Seventy-four children aged 8 to 18 years with a FAPD (Irritable Bowel Syndrome or Functional Abdominal Pain-Not Otherwise Specified), diagnosed according to the Rome IV criteria, will be randomly allocated to receive either a low-FODMAP diet or a regular diet for 4 weeks. The primary outcome will be the percentage of the responders, defined as the participants who have at least 30% improvement in abdominal pain intensity on a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) during the last week of the trial compared with baseline, that is at least equal to the Reliable Change Index (≥ 25 mm change on VAS). Other outcomes will include changes in stool consistency, abdominal pain frequency, total scores on the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale, KIDSCREEN-10 Index and World Health Organization Five Well-Being Index, child’s school attendance and parents’ work absenteeism, and BMI-for-age z-score. Compliance, tolerability of the low-FODMAP diet, and adverse events also will be evaluated. Each FAPD subtype will be assessed separately. Discussion There is a need for high-quality evidence regarding the dietary management of children with FAPDs. This randomized controlled trial (RCT) of rigorous methodological design will help to establish the effectiveness, if any, of a low-FODMAP diet for the management of FAPDs in the pediatric population. The findings of this RCT will assist with the development of guidelines and influence the direction of further research. Abstract

Background: Since the publication of The World Allergy Organization (WAO) Diagnosis and Rationale for Action against Cow's Milk Allergy (DRACMA) Guidelines in 2010, a number of other guidelines, expert opinions, and position papers relating to the management of cow's milk allergy (CMA) have been published. We aimed to systematically review the quality of the guidelines on CMA diagnosis and management in children and/or adults published between 2010 and 2020. Methods: The MEDLINE, EMBASE, ISI Web of Science, World Health Organization Global Index Medicus, and Turning Research into Practice databases as well as website guideline repositories were searched from January 2010 until May 2020. Any clinical practice recommendations and/or guidelines focusing on the diagnosis and management of CMA in children and/or adults developed or endorsed by professional scientific societies or organizations were included. The guidelines were evaluated using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation (AGREE II) tool, a 23-item tool organized within 6 domains and 2 global rating items. Results: We included 12 guidelines; 8 were developed by national and 4 by international organizations. The quality scores for each domain varied: of all domains, the clarity of presentation domain had the highest median score (92%; Q1-Q3 81–100%), whereas rigor of development had the lowest median score (30%; Q1-Q3 15–67%). The median scores (Q1-Q3) for individual domains were as follows: scope and purpose 82% (70–99%), stakeholder involvement 63% (21–79%), rigor of development 30% (15–67%), clarity of presentation 92% (81–100%), applicability 68% (57–75%), and editorial independence 75% (69–100%). The median overall score was 70% (58–89%). Only 1 guideline (from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence [NICE]) achieved top ratings (100%) in five domains and the overall score. Three guidelines (from the NICE, the British Society for Allergy & Clinical Immunology [BSACI] and WAO) achieved the highest ratings (100%) in at least 3 domains and the overall score. Conclusion: The majority of identified guidelines were of good or very good quality. However, the weakest point was the rigor of development domain, mostly due to unclear description of strengths and limitations of the body of evidence and the procedure for updating the guidelines.

Abstract

The cemetery in Nižná Myšľa is one of the most important funerary sites in Early Bronze Age Central Europe. Many years of excavations led to the discovery of nearly 800 graves associated with the Otomani-Füzesabony culture. The presented paper is an attempt to reconstruct the spatial development of the cemetery, based on statistical analyses of grave goods and using the latest findings concerning the absolute chronology of selected categories of finds. A significant role in the analyses was played by female burials, in which numerous objects were discovered, which were evidence of the relatively high status of women in the local community. This provided the authors with a basis for discussion with regard to the dominant male-oriented narratives concerning the communities of fortified settlements.

Abstract

A basic procedure affecting maxillofacial geometry is the bilateral sagittal split osteotomy. During the surgery, the bony segments are placed in a new position that provides the correct occlusion. Changes in the geometry of the mandible will affect the surrounding structures and will have a significant impact on the functioning of the masticatory system. As a result of the displacement of the bone segment, the biomechanical conditions change, i.e., the load and the position of the muscles. The primary aim of this study was to determine the changes in the values of the muscular forces caused by mandible geometry alteration. The study considered the translation and rotation of the distal segment, as well as rotations of the proximal segments in three axes. Calculations were performed for the unilateral, static loading of a model based on rigid body mechanics. Muscles were modeled as spring elements, and a novel approach was used to determine muscle stiffness. In addition, an attempt was made, based on the results obtained for single displacements separately, to determine the changes in muscle forces for geometries with complex displacements. Based on the analysis of the results, it was shown that changes in the geometry of the mandibular bone associated with the bilateral sagittal split osteotomy will have a significant effect on the values of the masticatory muscle forces. Displacement of the distal segment has the greatest effect from −21.69 to 26.11%, while the proximal segment rotations affected muscle force values to a less extent, rarely exceeding 1%. For Yaw and Pitch rotations, the opposite effect of changes within one muscle is noticed. Changes in muscle forces for complex geometry changes can be determined with a high degree of accuracy by the appropriate summation of results obtained for simple cases.

However, the plaques should be linked with the Benedictine convent founded in Poznań at the beginning of the 17th century.

Abstract

The article presents the results of research on the absolute chronology of the Nižná Myšľa cemetery. Due to its scale and location in a key region of the Carpathian Basin, it should be considered one of the most important Early Bronze Age sites in Central Europe. Many years of archaeological research have so far failed to provide adequate data on absolute chronology. This text presents the results of statistical and spatial analyses on a series of newly acquired 14C dates. They allowed us to present a model of the spatial and chronological development of the funerary space and to capture the stage of significant cultural change associated with the adoption of a new raw material—bronze.

Abstract

Hoard finds from the Bronze Age have appeared all over Europe, prompting questions about their functions (either as raw materials for recycling or votive objects). The hoard trove of raw materials from Przybysław in Greater Poland is an interesting example of a discovery that is related to the foundry activities of Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age communities (c. 600 BC). The deposit consists of fragments of raw materials that were damaged end products intended for smelting. The research included the characterisation of the material in terms of the variety of the raw materials that were used. The individual elements of the hoard were characterised in terms of their chemical compositions, microstructures, and properties. A range of modern instrumental research methods were used: metallographic macroscopic and microscopic observations by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), chemical-composition analysis by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (ED-XRF), X-ray microanalysis (EDS), and detailed crystallisation analysis by electron microscopy with an emphasis on electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). As part of this study, model alloys were also prepared for two of the selected chemical compositions, (i.e., CuPbSn and CuPb). These alloys were analysed for their mechanical and technological properties. This research of the hoard from Przybysław (Jarocin district, Greater Poland) has contributed to the recognition and interpretation of the function and nature of the hoard by using modern research and modelling methods as a cultic raw material deposit. Abstract

Die Wappen auf dem Taufbecken der Domkirche zu Posen Zusammenfassung In der Posener Domkirche St. Peter und Paul hat sich ein gotisches Taufbecken aus Metall erhalten, auf dem im Frühjahr 2016 Polychromiereste mit fragmentarisch erhaltenen vier Wappen entdeckt wurden. Die auf uns gekommenen archivalischen Erwähnungen lassen die Entstehung des Objekts auf die Zeit vor dem 30. April 1447 datieren. Auf dem Deckel des Taufbeckens sind höchstwahrscheinlich die Wappen folgender Geschlechter zu sehen: Łodzia – Nałęcz – Awdaniec – Leliwa (das erste und das letzte Wappen sind sehr schlecht erhalten, weshalb ihre Identifizierung nur hypothetisch ist). Die Wappen stellen die Ahnenprobe des Posener Bischofs Andreas von Bnin (um 1396/1397–1479) dar, die bereits von seiner Bronzegrabplatte aus dem Posener Dom bekannt ist. Das Posener Taufbecken ist älter als das Gnesener, das 1448 gestiftet wurde. Es entstand zwischen 1435 (als Andreas Posener Domherr wurde) und 1447 (als das Taufbecken zuerst erwähnt wird). Seine Entstehung kann vorsichtig auf die Jahre 1439-1447 eingegrenzt werden, da es wohl wahrscheinlicher ist, das Andreas von Bnin das Objekt erst nach der Übernahme des Bistums Posen gestiftet hat. Coats-of-arms on the gothic baptismal font in the Poznań Cathedral Abstract In the Poznań Cathdral of St. Apostles Peter and Paul there is a gothic metal baptismal font, on which remains of colour polychromy with fragments of four coats-of-arms were found in the spring of 2016. Some written sources allow to date the object to before 30 April 1447. On its cover there are most probably the arms of the knightly clans: Łodzia – Nałęcz – Awdaniec – Leliwa (the first and last of these are hardly visible so their identification is only hypothetical). The coats-of-arms display the ancestry of Andrzej of Bnin, bishop of Poznań, of the Łodzia clan (b. circa 1396/1397, d. 1479), known also from his bronze tomb slate, preserved in the Poznań Cathedral. The Poznań font is older than that of Gniezno, produced in 1448. It was made between 1435 (when Andrzej became a canon of Poznań) and 1447 (when it was first mentioned in sources). The dating may be cautiously narrowed to the years 1439-1447, as the object was most probably ordered by Andrzej of Bnin after he became the bishop of Poznań.

48. Infant feeding knowledge and practices among parents of infants aged 4-12 months in Poland: an online cross-sectional survey study

Abstract

IntroductionA better understanding of current infant feeding practices and factors influencing them may improve the implementation of infant feeding guidelines in the future.AimTo assess the confidence in knowledge and knowledge of selected infant feeding statements, and to assess selected infant feeding practices among parents of infants aged 4 to 12 months.Material and methodsA cross-sectional study was conducted in Poland. Self-selected parents were recruited through the Internet. Data from 6934 responders, almost exclusively (99.2%) mothers, were analysed.Results and discussionAlmost 68.8% of mothers assessed their knowledge of infant complementary feeding practices as sufficient. In line with current recommendations, most mothers agreed that fruits are a good source of vitamins for infants (75.3%); and disagreed that fruit juices should be given to infants younger than age 1 year (61.1%); plant-based beverages are an appropriate alternative to breast-milk substitutes for infants (59.9%); potentially allergenic foods should be included into infant diet only after other complementary food had been introduced (68.4%), and, the introduction of other potentially allergenic foods should be delayed, if symptoms following the introduction of a new food occur (55.7%). However, some participants, albeit minority, reported the introduction of plant-based beverages (12.5%), cow’s milk (16.7%), and fruit juices to infants younger than 12 months (15.8%), thus, it was against the current recommendations.ConclusionsA discrepancy exists between the confidence in knowledge and knowledge of selected infant feeding statements and feeding practices among Polish mothers of infants aged 4 to 12 months.

The paper presents the results of a triaxial test conducted on stiff, consolidated clays. The standard TXCIU procedure (isotropic consolidation and undrained shearing) was applied in the laboratory soil tests. The undrained elastic modulus Eu50 was determined from each test.
