We study the dynamics of scalar fields with compact field spaces, or axions, in de Sitter space. We argue that the field space topology can qualitatively affect the physics of these fields beyond just which terms are allowed in their actions. We argue that the sharpest difference is for massless fields -- the free massless noncompact scalar field does not admit a two-point function that is both de Sitter-invariant and well-behaved at long distances, while the massless compact scalar does. As proof that this difference can be observable, we show that the long-distance behavior of a heavy scalar field, and thus its cosmological collider signal, can qualitatively change depending on whether it interacts with a light compact or noncompact scalar field. We find an interesting interplay between the circumference of the field space and the Hubble scale. When the field space is much larger than Hubble, the compact field behaves similarly to a light noncompact field and forces the heavy field to dilute much faster than any free field can. However, depending on how much smaller the field space is compared to Hubble, the compact field can cause the heavy scalar to decay either faster or slower than any free field and so we conclude that there can be qualitative and observable consequences of the field space's topology in inflationary correlation functions., Comment: 40+10 pages, 4 figures, many diagrams

We study the self-energies of weakly interacting scalar fields in de Sitter space with one field much lighter than the Hubble scale. We argue that self-energies drastically simplify in this light limit. We illustrate this in theories with two scalar fields, one heavy and one light, interacting with one another through either cubic or quartic interactions. To regulate infrared divergences, we compute these self-energies in Euclidean de Sitter space and then carefully analytically continue to Lorentzian signature. In particular, we do this for the most general renormalizable theory of two scalar fields with even interactions to leading order in the coupling and the mass of the light field. These self-energies are determined by de Sitter sunset diagrams, whose analytic structure and UV divergences we derive. Even at very weak couplings, the light field can substantially change how the heavy field propagates over long distances. The light field's existence may then be inferred from how it modifies the heavy field's oscillatory contribution to the primordial bispectrum in the squeezed limit, i.e. its cosmological collider signal., Comment: 27+17 pages, 5 figures, many diagrams

Massless chiral excitations can arise from the interactions between a fermion and an axion string, propagating along the string and allowing it to superconduct. The properties of these excitations, or zero modes, dictate how the string interacts with light and can thus have important phenomenological consequences. In this paper, we add a nowhere-vanishing Dirac mass for the fermion in the usual model of axion electrodynamics. We find that the zero modes exhibit an interesting phase structure in which they delocalize from the string's core as the mass increases, up until a critical value past which they disappear. We study this structure from an analytic perspective, with explicit numerical solutions, and via anomaly inflow arguments. Finally, we derive the two-dimensional effective theory of the zero mode and its interactions with the four-dimensional gauge field and show how this effective theory breaks down as the zero modes delocalize., Comment: 25 pages + appendices, 6 figures. The information metric provides a unique notion of distance along any continuous family of physical theories, placing two theories further apart the more distinguishable they are. As such, the information metric is typically singular at quantum critical points, reflecting the fact they make qualitatively different scale-invariant predictions when compared to other theories in the family. However, such singularities are always at finite distance. The goal of this paper is to study infinite distance metric singularities and understand what type of physics generates them. We argue that infinite distance limits in the information metric correspond to theories in which expectation values factorize, and that unitarity restricts the asymptotic form of the metric to have a universal logarithmic singularity whose coefficient only depends on how the factorization limit is approached. We illustrate this relationship in a set of wide-ranging examples. Furthermore, we argue that it provides a particularly simple bottom-up motivation for the seemingly universal behavior of quantum gravity in asymptotic regions of moduli space described by the Swampland Distance Conjecture: gravity universally couples to stress-energy and thus abhors factorization limits. The towers of light fields that appear in these limits in so many examples serve to decouple gravity and consistently allow for factorization. Gravitational waves (GWs) are an exciting new probe of physics beyond the standard models of gravity and particle physics. One interesting possibility is provided by the so-called "gravitational atom," wherein a superradiant instability spontaneously forms a cloud of ultralight bosons around a rotating black hole. The presence of these boson clouds affects the dynamics of black hole binary inspirals and their associated GW signals. In this Letter, we show that the binary companion can induce transitions between bound and unbound states of the cloud, effectively "ionizing" it, analogous to the photoelectric effect in atomic physics. The orbital energy lost in this process can overwhelm the losses due to GW emission, so that ionization drives the inspiral rather than merely perturbing it. We show that the ionization power contains sharp features that lead to distinctive "kinks" in the evolution of the emitted GW frequency. These discontinuities are a unique signature of the boson cloud and observing them would not only constitute a detection of the ultralight boson itself, but also provide direct information about its mass and the state of the cloud., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Superradiant instabilities may create clouds of ultralight bosons around rotating black holes, forming so-called "gravitational atoms." It was recently shown that the presence of a binary companion can induce resonant transitions between bound states of these clouds, whose backreaction on the binary's orbit leads to characteristic signatures in the emitted gravitational waves. In this work, we show that the interaction with the companion can also trigger transitions from bound to unbound states of the cloud -- a process that we refer to as "ionization" in analogy with the photoelectric effect in atomic physics. The orbital energy lost in the process overwhelms the losses due to gravitational wave emission and contains sharp features carrying information about the energy spectrum of the cloud. Moreover, we also show that if the companion is a black hole, then the part of the cloud impinging on the event horizon will be absorbed. This "accretion" leads to a significant increase of the companion's mass, which alters the dynamical evolution and ensuing waveform of the binary. We argue that a combined treatment of resonances, ionization, and accretion is crucial to discover and characterize gravitational atoms with upcoming gravitational wave detectors., Comment: 34+21 pages, 16 figures

The classical information metric provides a unique notion of distance on the space of probability distributions with a well-defined operational interpretation: two distributions are far apart if they are readily distinguishable from one another. The quantum information metric generalizes this to the space of quantum states, and thus defines a notion of distance on an arbitrary continuous family of quantum field theories via their vacua that is proportional to the metric on moduli space when restricted appropriately. In this paper, we study this metric and its operational interpretation in a variety of examples. We specifically focus on why and how infinite distance singularities appear. We argue that two theories are infinitely far apart if they are hyper-distinguishable: that is, if they can be distinguished from one another, with certainty, using only a few measurements. We explain why such singularities appear for the simple harmonic oscillator yet are absent for quantum field theories near a typical quantum critical point, and show how an infinite distance point can emerge when a tower of fields degenerates in mass. Finally, we use this perspective to provide a potential bottom-up motivation for the Swampland Distance Conjecture and indicate how we might extend it beyond current lampposts., Comment: 52+6 pages, 6 figures

We show that axions interacting with abelian gauge fields obtain a potential from loops of magnetic monopoles. This is a consequence of the Witten effect: the axion field causes the monopoles to acquire an electric charge and alters their energy spectrum. The axion potential can also be understood as a type of instanton effect due to a Euclidean monopole worldline winding around its dyon collective coordinate. We calculate this effect, which has features in common with both nonabelian instantons and Euclidean brane instantons. To provide consistency checks, we argue that this axion potential vanishes in the presence of a massless charged fermion and that it is robust against the presence of higher-derivative corrections in the effective Lagrangian. Finally, as a first step toward connecting with particle phenomenology and cosmology, we discuss the regime in which this potential is important in determining the dark matter relic abundance in a hidden sector containing an abelian gauge group, monopoles, and axions., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure

A central object in any axionic theory is its periodic potential, which is typically generated by instantons. The goal of this paper is to understand what physically happens to the theory when we lose control of the potential's instanton expansion. We argue, using the Yang-Lee theory of phase transitions, that the theory breaks down in the classic sense: states become light. However, these states are not necessarily light for all values of the axion and there can be large regions where the effective description remains valid. We find alternative expressions for the effective potential in terms of the properties of these light states, which remain useful even when the instanton expansion breaks down, and thus initiate a push beyond the lamppost of large instanton actions. Most of these questions are motivated by the axionic Weak Gravity Conjecture, which we reformulate without reference to instanton actions. We study the imprints of new ultralight particles on the gravitational-wave signals emitted by binary black holes. Superradiant instabilities may create large clouds of scalar or vector fields around rotating black holes. The presence of a binary companion then induces transitions between different states of the cloud, which become resonantly enhanced when the orbital frequency matches the energy gap between the states. We find that the time dependence of the orbit significantly impacts the cloud's dynamics during a transition. Following an analogy with particle colliders, we introduce an S-matrix formalism to describe the evolution through multiple resonances. We show that the state of the cloud, as it approaches the merger, carries vital information about its spectrum via time-dependent finite-size effects. Moreover, due to the transfer of energy and angular momentum between the cloud and the orbit, a dephasing of the gravitational-wave signal can occur which is correlated with the positions of the resonances. Notably, for intermediate and extreme mass ratio inspirals, long-lived floating orbits are possible, as well as kicks that yield large eccentricities. Observing these effects, through the precise reconstruction of waveforms, has the potential to unravel the internal structure of the boson clouds, ultimately probing the masses and spins of new particles., Comment: 49+14 pages, 19 Figures

We develop methods for resummation of instanton lattice series. Using these tools, we investigate the consequences of the Weak Gravity Conjecture for large-field axion inflation. We find that the Sublattice Weak Gravity Conjecture implies a constraint on the volume of the axion fundamental domain. However, we also identify conditions under which alignment and clockwork constructions, and a new variant of N-flation that we devise, can evade this constraint. We conclude that some classes of low-energy effective theories of large-field axion inflation are consistent with the strongest proposed form of the Weak Gravity Conjecture, while others are not., Comment: 42 pages, 6 figures

We compute the quasi-bound state spectra of ultralight scalar and vector fields around rotating black holes. These spectra are determined by the gravitational fine structure constant $\alpha$, which is the ratio of the size of the black hole to the Compton wavelength of the field. When $\alpha$ is small, the energy eigenvalues and instability rates can be computed analytically. Since the solutions vary rapidly near the black hole horizon, ordinary perturbative approximations fail and we must use matched asymptotic expansions to determine the spectra. Our analytical treatment relies on the separability of the equations of motion, and is therefore only applicable to the scalar field and the electric modes of the vector field. However, for slowly-rotating black holes, the equations for the magnetic modes can be written in a separable form, which we exploit to derive their energy eigenvalues and conjecture an analytic form for their instability rates. To check our conjecture, and to extend all results to large values of $\alpha$, we solve for the spectra numerically. We explain how to accurately and efficiently compute these spectra, without relying on separability. This allows us to obtain reliable results for any $\alpha \gtrsim 0.001$ and black holes of arbitrary spin. Non-perturbatively generated effective potentials play an extremely useful and often critical role in string and inflationary model building. These potentials are typically computed by methods that assume the system is in equilibrium. For systems out of equilibrium, like an inflaton rolling down its potential, there are corrections to the semi-classical evolution due to transient phenomena. We provide a new qualitative and quantitative understanding of non-perturbative effects in real time for a wide class of toy quantum mechanical models. We derive an effective Schr\"{o}dinger equation that does not rely on any notion of equilibrium and captures the low-energy dynamics supposedly described by the effective potential. We find that there are potentially large corrections to this potential that are not captured by standard equilibrium techniques, and quantify when these corrections significantly alter the effective dynamics., Comment: 1+36 pages, 12 figures, 4 appendices

We examine the relaxion mechanism in string theory. An essential feature is that an axion winds over $N \gg 1$ fundamental periods. In string theory realizations via axion monodromy, this winding number corresponds to a physical charge carried by branes or fluxes. We show that this monodromy charge backreacts on the compact space, ruining the structure of the relaxion action. In particular, the barriers generated by strong gauge dynamics have height $\propto e^{-N}$, so the relaxion does not stop when the Higgs acquires a vev. Backreaction of monodromy charge can therefore spoil the relaxion mechanism. We initiate a comprehensive survey of axion inflation in compactifications of type IIB string theory on Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties. For every threefold with $h^{1,1} \le 4$ in the Kreuzer-Skarke database, we compute the metric on K\"ahler moduli space, as well as the matrix of four-form axion charges of Euclidean D3-branes on rigid divisors. These charges encode the possibility of enlarging the field range via alignment. We then determine an upper bound on the inflationary field range $\Delta \phi$ that results from the leading instanton potential, in the absence of monodromy. The bound on the field range in this ensemble is $\Delta \phi \lesssim 0.3 M_{\rm{pl}}$, in a compactification where the smallest curve volume is $(2\pi)^2\alpha'$, and we argue that the sigma model expansion is adequately controlled. The largest increase resulting from alignment is a factor $\approx 2.6$. We also examine a set of threefolds with $h^{1,1}$ up to $100$ and characterize their axion charge matrices.
