Polar and chiral crystal symmetries confer a variety of potentially useful functionalities upon solids by coupling otherwise noninteracting mechanical, electronic, optical, and magnetic degrees of freedom. We describe two unstudied phases of the 3D perovskite, CsSnBr$_3$, which emerge below 85 K due to the formation of Sn(II) lone pairs and their interaction with extant octahedral tilts. Phase II (77 K<$T$<85 K, space group $P2_1/m$) exhibits ferroaxial order driven by a noncollinear pattern of lone pair-driven distortions within the plane normal to the unique octahedral tilt axis, preserving the inversion symmetry observed at higher temperatures. Phase I ($T$<77 K, space group $P2_1$) additionally exhibits ferroelectric order due to distortions along the unique tilt axis, breaking both inversion and mirror symmetries. This polar and chiral phase exhibits second harmonic generation from the bulk and a large, intrinsic polarization$-$electrostriction coefficient along the polar axis ($Q_{22}\approx$1.1 m$^4$ C$^{-2}$), resulting in acute negative thermal expansion ($\alpha_V=-9\times10^{-5}$ K$^{-1}$) through the onset of spontaneous polarization. The unprecedented structures of phases I and II were predicted by recursively following harmonic phonon instabilities to generate a tree of candidate structures and subsequently corroborated by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and polarized Raman and $^{81}$Br nuclear quadrupole resonance spectroscopies. Relativistic electronic structure scenarios compatible with reported photoluminescence measurements are discussed. Together, the polar symmetry, small bandgap, large spin-orbit splitting of Sn 5$p$ orbitals, and predicted strain sensitivity of the symmetry-breaking distortions suggest bulk samples and epitaxial films of CsSnBr$_3$ or its neighboring solid solutions as strong candidates for bulk Rashba effects.

The spin degree of freedom of charge carriers in halide-perovskite semiconductors can be highly useful for information photonics applications. The Faraday effect is known to be the best indicator of paramagnetism of the material and of the spin-light interaction. In this work, the Faraday effect is demonstrated, for the first time, in a hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskite MAPbI3 (MA+=CH3NH+3). The Faraday rotation and birefringence were measured across the tetragonal-cubic phase transition at 327 K. The Faraday rotation is strongly suppressed below the phase transition temperature due to anisotropy (linear birefringence) of the tetragonal crystal phase. The situation changes drastically above the phase transition temperature, when the crystal becomes optically isotropic. The emerging Faraday rotation obeys the Curie law, demonstrating its population-related paramagnetic nature. This observation opens new prospects for application of these systems and for their investigations using methods of the polarization noise spectroscopy applicable to optically anisotropic materials., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

We show that formamidinium lead bromide is unique among the halide perovskite crystals because its inorganic sub-lattice exhibits intrinsic local static disorder that co-exists with a well-defined average crystal structure. Our study combines THz-range Raman-scattering with single-crystal X-ray diffraction and first-principles calculations to probe the inorganic sub-lattice dynamics evolution with temperature in the range of 10-300 K. The temperature evolution of the Raman spectra shows that low-temperature, local static disorder strongly affects the crystal's structural dynamics and phase transitions at higher temperatures., Comment: Total 16 pages, 8 figures (including SI). Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites such as methylammonium lead iodide (CH3NH3PbI3) are game-changing semiconductors for solar cells and light-emitting devices owing to their exceptionally long carrier lifetime and diffusion length. Determining whether the large dipole moment of the organic cation and dynamic disorder benefit the optoelectronic properties of CH3NH3PbI3 has been an outstanding challenge. Herein, via transient absorption measurements employing an infrared pump pulse tuned to a methylammonium vibration, we observe slow, nanosecond-long thermal dissipation from the selectively excited organic mode to the entire lattice. Resulting transient electronic signatures, during the period of thermal-nonequilibrium when the induced thermal motions are mostly concentrated on the organic sublattice, reveal that induced motions of the organic cations do not alter absorption or photoluminescence response of CH3NH3PbI3, beyond thermal effects. Our results suggest that the attractive optoelectronic properties of CH3NH3PbI3 mainly derive from the inorganic lead-halide framework., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

The strong spin-orbit interaction in the organic-inorganic perovskites tied to the incorporation of heavy elements (\textit{e.g.} Pb, I) makes these materials interesting for applications in spintronics. Due to a lack of inversion symmetry associated with distortions of the metal-halide octahedra, the Rashba effect (used \textit{e.g.} in spin field-effect transistors and spin filters) has been predicted to be much larger in these materials than in traditional III-V semiconductors such as GaAs, supported by the recent observation of a near record Rashba spin splitting in CH$_3$NH$_3$PbBr$_3$ using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). More experimental studies are needed to confirm and quantify the presence of Rashba effects in the organic-inorganic perovskite family of materials. Here we apply time-resolved circular dichroism techniques to the study of carrier spin dynamics in a 2D perovskite thin film [(BA)$_2$MAPb$_2$I$_7$; BA = CH$_3$(CH$_2$)$_3$NH$_3$, MA = CH$_3$NH$_3$]. Our findings confirm the presence of a Rashba spin splitting via the dominance of precessional spin relaxation induced by the Rashba effective magnetic field. The size of the Rashba spin splitting in our system was extracted from simulations of the measured spin dynamics incorporating LO-phonon and electron-electron scattering, yielding a value of 10 meV at an electron energy of 50 meV above the band gap, representing a 20 times larger value than in GaAs quantum wells.

Shifting the Fermi energy in solids by doping, defect formation or gating generally results in changes in the charge density distribution, which reflect the ability of the bonding pattern in solids to adjust to such external perturbations. In the ionic limit, such changes are described by the formal oxidation states (FOS) whereby a single atom type is presumed to absorb the full burden of the perturbation (change in charge) of the whole compound. In this picture, when the solar absorber CsSnI3 loses 50 % of its Sn atoms thereby forming the ordered vacancy compound Cs2SnI6, the Sn is said to change from Sn2+ to Sn4+. In reality, the charge redistribution is more complex. To understand the electronic properties of these two groups and to gauge the trends in s-electron charge on the nucleus, we studied the 113/216 compound pairs CsSnCl3/Cs2SnCl6; CsSnBr3/Cs2SnBr6, and CsSnI3/Cs2SnI6. We have calculated the electronic structure of these three compound pairs, complementing them by CsSnF3/Cs2SnF6 in the hypothetical cubic structure for completing the chemical trends. These materials were also synthesized by chemical routes and characterized by X-ray diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy and K-edge X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy. We find that in going from 113 to 216 there is a decrease in the s charge on Sn, in agreement with the FOS picture. However, at the same time, we observe an increase of the p charge via downshift of the otherwise unoccupied p level, an effect that tends to replenish much of the lost s charge. This effect is theoretically explained as a self-regulating response [H. Raebiger, S. Lany, and A. Zunger, Nature 453, 763 (2008)] whereby the system re-hybridizes to minimize the effect of the charge perturbation created by vacancy formation. An organic-inorganic halide perovskite of CH3NH3SnI3 with significantly improved structural stability is obtained via pressure-induced amorphization and recrystallization. In situ high-pressure resistance measurements reveal an increased electrical conductivity by 300% in the pressure-treated perovskite. Photocurrent measurements also reveal a substantial enhancement in visible-light responsiveness. The mechanism underlying the enhanced properties is demonstrated to be associated with the improved structural stability.

Hybrid lead-halide perovskites have emerged as an excellent class of photovoltaic materials. Recent reports suggest that the organic molecular cation is responsible for local polar fluctuations that inhibit carrier recombination. We combine low frequency Raman scattering with first-principles molecular dynamics (MD) to study the fundamental nature of these local polar fluctuations. Our observations of a strong central peak in both hybrid (CH$_3$NH$_3$PbBr$_3$) and all-inorganic (CsPbBr$_3$) lead-halide perovskites show that anharmonic, local polar fluctuations are intrinsic to the general lead-halide perovskite structure, and not unique to the dipolar organic cation. MD simulations show that head-to-head Cs motion coupled to Br face expansion, on a few hundred femtosecond time scale, drives the local polar fluctuations in CsPbBr$_3$.

Hybrid metal-organic perovskite solar cells have astounded the solar cell community with their rapid rise in efficiency over the past three years. Despite this success, the basic processes governing the photogeneration of free charges, particularly their dynamics and efficiency, remain unknown. Here we use ultrabroadband pulses of THz frequency light to see the intrinsic photophysical properties of single crystal lead halide perovskite just femtoseconds after a photon is first absorbed. Our spectra reveal the dynamics and efficiencies of free charge creation, the remarkable ease in which they move through the lattice and the complicated interplay between free and bound charges in these materials.

Heisenberg interactions are ubiquitous in magnetic materials and have been prevailing in modeling and designing quantum magnets. Bond-directional interactions offer a novel alternative to Heisenberg exchange and provide the building blocks of the Kitaev model, which has a quantum spin liquid (QSL) as its exact ground state. Honeycomb iridates, A2IrO3 (A=Na,Li), offer potential realizations of the Kitaev model, and their reported magnetic behaviors may be interpreted within the Kitaev framework. However, the extent of their relevance to the Kitaev model remains unclear, as evidence for bond-directional interactions remains indirect or conjectural. Here, we present direct evidence for dominant bond-directional interactions in antiferromagnetic Na2IrO3 and show that they lead to strong magnetic frustration. Diffuse magnetic x-ray scattering reveals broken spin-rotational symmetry even above Neel temperature, with the three spin components exhibiting nano-scale correlations along distinct crystallographic directions. This spin-space and real-space entanglement directly manifests the bond-directional interactions, provides the missing link to Kitaev physics in honeycomb iridates, and establishes a new design strategy toward frustrated magnetism., Comment: Nature Physics, accepted (2015)
