Many bird species exhibit both social monogamy and genetic polygamy. Rates of genetic polygamy (often reported as the proportion of nests containing extra-pair young) in socially monogamous species vary widely, stimulating much research into the potentially adaptive value of these behaviors. Similarly, adult and nestling sex ratios of bird populations are not infrequently male-biased, leading to questions of the adaptive value of a female's ability to influence sex ratios within her nest. Empirical data on both aspects of reproductive behavior, however, are still scarce for a majority of species even within relatively well-studied bird communities. We sampled DNA from nestling (n = 153) and adult (n = 121) Seaside Sparrows (Ammospiza maritima) at 58 nests in southeastern Louisiana from 2012 to 2017. We used microsatellite genotype analyses to discover that (1) ~32% of nests contained broods with mixed paternity, and (2) ~4% of broods contained evidence of mixed maternity. We sexed all birds via PCR and found a significant male bias among nestlings (62% of all nestlings were males). Prevalence of mixed paternity and male bias among nestlings did not appear to be related to site oiling status following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, site context, timing within breeding season, or density of adult Seaside Sparrows or nests. Nonetheless, these results indicate a need for further work to understand the breeding biology of Seaside Sparrows. Passive restoration of secondary forests can partially offset loss of biodiversity following tropical deforestation. Tree cavities, an essential resource for cavity-nesting birds, are usually associated with old forest. We investigated the restoration time for tree cavities suitable for cavity-nesting birds in secondary forest at the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project (BDFFP) in central Amazonian Brazil. We hypothesized that cavity abundance would increase with forest age, but more rapidly in areas exposed to cutting only, compared to areas where forest was cut and burned. We also hypothesized that cavities would be lower, smaller, and less variable in secondary forest than in old-growth forest, which at the BDFFP is part of a vast lowland forest with no recent history of human disturbance. We used pole-mounted cameras and tree-climbing to survey cavities in 39 plots (each 200 × 40 m) across old-growth forests and 11–34-year-old secondary forests. We used generalized linear models to examine how cavity supply was related to forest age and land-use history (cut only vs cut-and-burn), and principal components analysis to compare cavity characteristics between old-growth and secondary forest. Cavity availability increased with secondary forest age, regardless of land-use history, but the oldest secondary forest (31–34 years) still had fewer cavities (mean ± SE = 9.8 ± 2.2 cavities ha–1) than old-growth forest (20.5 ± 4.2 cavities ha–1). Moreover, secondary forests lacked cavities that were high and deep, with large entrances—characteristics likely to be important for many species of cavity-nesting birds. Several decades may be necessary to restore cavity supply in secondary Amazonian forests, especially for the largest birds (e.g. forest-falcons and parrots > 190 g). Retention of legacy trees as forest is cleared might help maintain a supply of cavities that could allow earlier recolonization by some species of cavity-nesting birds when cleared areas are abandoned. Knowing the location of migratory birds throughout their annual cycle is fundamental for many questions in ornithology. Technological advances have provided several approaches, with increasing miniaturization allowing deployment on smaller and smaller birds. Here, we examine the strengths and limitations of barometric pressure geolocators (pressure tags), which have recently been shown to be extremely effective in tracking small birds (<25 g). The newly developed geolocation by pressure workflow (GeoPressureR) uses a global weather analysis dataset and hidden Markov movement model to reveal locations more accurately or continuously than can be achieved by other available light-weight devices (e.g. light-level geolocators, automated radio telemetry, and archival GPS tags). Additionally, pressure data can provide altitude information and document generally intractable flight behavior, as well as exact migratory phenologies. This new technology can be applied to important unresolved problems such as altitudinal migration, stopover site use, molt migration, vertical airspace use, and drivers of migratory flight initiation, duration, and direction. We provide an example of a pressure tag on a Swainson's Warbler (Limnothlypis swainsonii) deployed on its breeding territory in Virginia, USA, revealing the complete story of its migration to and from Cuba, including its refined wintering site, stopover sites, and migration routes, all with precise timing. Studies relying on pressure tags are still subject to biases related to recovery of the devices for data extraction, and application to birds that exhibit extensive aerial movements (e.g. swallows and swifts) remains challenging. Widespread deployment of pressure tags could show unprecedented details of bird migration and other aspects of aerial behavior, which could benefit conservation and greatly enrich our understanding of avian movement ecology.
