Abstract

The Sphynx project was an exploratory study to discover what might be done to improve the heavy replication of in- structions in independent instruction caches for a massively parallel machine where a single program is executing across all of the cores. While a machine with only many cores (fewer than 50) might not have any issues replicating the instructions for each core, as we approach the era where thousands of cores can be placed on one chip, the overhead of instruction replication may become unacceptably large. We believe that a large amount of sharing should be possible when the ma- chine is configured for all of the threads to issue from the same set of instructions. We propose a technique that allows sharing an instruction cache among a number of independent processor cores to allow for inter-thread sharing and reuse of instruction memory. While we do not have test cases to demonstrate the potential magnitude of performance gains that could be achieved, the potential for sharing reduces the die area required for instruction storage on chip., Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures

This article examines the social and political changes in France and Spain during the 19th century that made possible the rise of the intellectual. The author argues the intellectual movement was influenced by the rise of the bourgeois in which a small group of intellectuals resisted the elitist governments and attempted to adopt new strategies to include the masses in government.

Abstract

This dossier aims to problematize the widespread understanding of ethnic cleavages as the hard core undergirding national conflict. As such it questions the rise of ethnic nationalism during the late nineteenth century as the direct cause of the dawn of Europe's 'oppressed peoples' after 1918. The different contributions evaluate the status of the First World War as the breakthrough moment of Wilsonian self-determination within the multi-ethnic states and empires in Europe. In this respect they investigate the recent powerful thesis propounded by scholars of national indifference in Central Europe that it was the unprecedented disruption of the Great War that politicized ethnicity as never before and made it into a marker of groupness rather than a mere social category, to use Rogers Brubaker's terms. The articles in this dossier also contribute to recent investigations that focus on how European empires tried to accommodate nationalism and how nationalist movements in and outside of Europe used the disruption of the war and Wilson's plea for self-determination to ask for independence. These articles demonstrate how the specific developments of war and revolution produced particular understandings of the general idea of self-determination. The Wilsonian discourse as such had a breakthrough in 1918 when the destruction of Austria-Hungary generally became accepted as an Allied post-war goal. Movements world-wide adopted self-determination as a goal and standard, but as this dossier demonstrates, all kinds of actors used Wilson's words for their many purposes, such that one cannot speak of a coherent and meaningful Wilsonian moment. Abstract

Promoting tourism appears to be a very neutral way to improve the local economy and by the way encourage the national consciousness. In Toledo, however, the local contribution to the patrimony of the nation was bitterly disputed at the beginning of the twentieth century. Many local conservatives defended the right of the Church to sell masterpieces of El Greco and even opposed the commemoration of El Greco in 1914. Local Liberals and Republicans, on the other hand, saw his altar pieces as an inalienable part of the city’s patrimony. The same occurred with the medieval heritage of Toledo as a city of three cultures. The Catholic press wanted to replace the old Jewish quarter with modern and hygienic houses, while the left proposed that the entire city would become a national monument. In this paper the development and consequences of these debates for Toledo’s artistic heritage, local and national identity, and tourism will be analysed. Fomentar el turismo parece una manera muy neutra para mejorar la economía local, y de paso estimular la conciencia nacional. En Toledo, sin embargo, a principios del siglo XX los debates para definir la aportación local al patrimonio nacional eran muy agrios. Muchos representantes de la derecha toledana defendían el derecho de la Iglesia de vender las obras maestras de El Greco e incluso se opusieron a la conmemoración de El Greco de 1914. Los liberales y republicanos locales, por su parte, consideraban sus retablos como parte del patrimonio que no debería de ningún modo salir del recinto de la ciudad. Lo mismo ocurrió con la herencia medieval de Toledo como ciudad de las tres culturas. La prensa católica quería sustituir el barrio judío por casas modernas e higiénicas, mientras que la izquierda quería que la ciudad entera fuese declarada monumento nacional. En este artículo analizamos detalladamente el desarrollo y las consecuencias de estos debates toledanos sobre el patrimonio artístico, la identidad local y nacional y el turismo.

Abstract

Analysing the commemorations which were held in Spain, and the monuments and representative buildings that were constructed in Madrid in the years before 1900, it seems clear that, in contrast with most of the other European countries, no consistent cultural policy was developed by the national government. After the 'disaster of 1898' some attempts were made to change this situation. But not even the major commemoration, which was the third centenary of the publication of the Don Quixote in 1905, proved to be a great success. Notwithstanding, this commemoration is an excellent source for studying the different ways in which nationalism was used. The initiative, for example, was taken by some prestigious writers, all connected with the liberal newspaper El Imparcial. With this commemoration they hoped to unite all the forces of the Spanish nation working together for the economic and cultural progress of the country. Some conservative thinkers, in turn, used the occasion to criticise revolutionary attempts and adventurous spirits. More interesting were the commemorative writings of young authors like Unamuno, Azorín, and Navarro Ledesma, in which a new kind of exalted nationalism could be discerned., Cuando se mira a las conmemoraciones celebradas y a los monumentos y edificios representativos en Madrid construidos en los años antes de 1900 queda claro que, en contraste con la mayoría de los países europeos, en España no existió una política cultural consistente. Parece que después del desastre de 1898 hubo algunos intentos de cambiar esa situación. Pero ni siquiera el mejor intento de celebrar una conmemoración a gran escala, que fue el tercer centenario de la publicación del Don Quijote en 1905, fue un verdadero éxito. No obstante, esta conmemoración constituye una fuente excelente para analizar las diversas maneras en que fue utilizado el nacionalismo. La iniciativa, por ejemplo, la tomaron algunos escritores prestigiosos ligados al diario El Imparcial, y con el centenario intentaban unir las fuerzas de la nación para trabajar juntos en el progreso económico y cultural del país. Algunos pensadores conservadores, a su vez, utilizaron la ocasión para advertir contra intentos revolucionarios y espíritus aventurosos. Lo más interesante sin duda fueron los escritos conmemorativos de jóvenes como Unamuno, Azorín y Navarro Ledesma en los cuales se vislumbra un nacionalismo exaltado de nuevo signo.
