4. Monitoring the refractive index of tissue models using light scattering spectroscopy

Abstract

In this work, we report the application of Raman microspectroscopy for analysis of the refractive index of a range of tissue phantoms. Using both a custom-developed setup with visible laser source and a commercial micro-spectrometer with near infrared laser, we measured the Raman spectra of gelatin hydrogels at various concentrations. By building a calibration curve from measured refractometry data and Raman scattering intensity for different vibrational modes of the hydrogel, we determined the refractive indices of the gels from their Raman spectra, with approximately the same accuracy as that of refractometry measurements with an Abbe refractometer. This work highlights the importance of a correlative approach through Brillouin-Raman microspectroscopy for the mechano-chemical analysis of biologically relevant samples., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

Abstract

Many problems in mechanobiology urgently require characterisation of the micromechanical properties of the fibrous proteins of cells and tissues. Brillouin light scattering has been proposed as a new optical elastography technique to meet this need, but the information contained in the Brillouin spectrum is still a matter of debate. Here we investigate this question using gelatin as a model system in which the macroscopic physical properties can be manipulated to mimic all the relevant biological states of matter, ranging from the liquid to the gel and the glassy phase. We demonstrate that Brillouin spectroscopy is a powerful tool to reveal both the elastic and viscous properties of biomaterials that are central to their biological functions., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Light scattering limits the penetration depth of non-invasive Raman spectroscopy in biological media. While safe levels of irradiation may be adequate to analyze superficial tissue, scattering of the pump beam reduces the Raman signal to undetectable levels deeper within the tissue. Here we demonstrate how wavefront shaping techniques can significantly increase the Raman signal at depth, while keeping the total irradiance constant, thus increasing the amount of Raman signal available for detection.

8. Braking Index of Isolated Pulsars II: A novel two-dipole model of pulsar magnetism

Abstract

The magnetic dipole radiation (MDR) model is currently the best approach we have to explain pulsar radiation. However a most characteristic parameter of the observed radiation, the braking index n$_{\rm obs}$ shows deviations for all the eight best studied isolated pulsars, from the simple model prediction n$_{\rm dip}$ = 3. The index depends upon the rotational frequency and its first and second time derivatives, but also on the assumption of that the magnetic dipole moment and inclination angle, and the moment of inertia of the pulsar are constant in time. In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. D 91, 063007 (2015)] we showed conclusively that changes in the moment of inertia with frequency alone, cannot explain the observed braking indices. Possible observational evidence for the magnetic dipole moment migrating away from the rotational axis at a rate $\dot\alpha$ $\sim$ 0.6$^{\circ}$ per 100 years over the life time of the Crab pulsar has been recently suggested by Lyne et al. In this paper, we explore the MDR model with constant moment of inertia and magnetic dipole moment but variable inclination angle $\alpha$. We first discuss the effect of the variation of $\alpha$ on the observed braking indices and show they all can be understood. However, no explanation for the origin of the change in $\alpha$ is provided. After discussion of the possible source(s) of magnetism in pulsars we propose a simple mechanism for the change in $\alpha$ based on a toy model in which the magnetic structure in pulsars consists of two interacting dipoles. 11. Learning of Key Scientific Concepts in a Web-Based On-Campus Collaborative Learning Environment.

Abstract

The authors developed a collaborative learning environment (CLE) as a student-centered approach to assist students' understanding of difficult scientific concepts. Computer-facilitated investigative group projects were designed to enhance students' communication and reasoning skills, peer-learning, and peer-teaching. Projects were structured around cost-efficient Web-delivered tasks incorporating re-usable interactive Web components that store student responses in a server database (OCCA, or Online Courseware Component Architecture). These provide for group discussion, self-assessment, and peer review. Student submissions were accumulated in a portfolio to enable them to reflect on their learning. "Facilitutors" contribute to timely feedback using efficient templates for reviewing and annotating student work. Students work in groups (3 per computer) for 4 to 6 hours on their project within scheduled weekly CLE classes of 40 students with one facilitutor (repeated 8 times). Successful attributes of these tasks are described and evaluated, including strengths of on-campus collaborative learning and appropriate training of "facilitutors." (Author/AEF)

Abstract

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will be a transformative experiment for gravitational wave astronomy, and, as such, it will offer unique opportunities to address many key astrophysical questions in a completely novel way. The synergy with ground-based and space-born instruments in the electromagnetic domain, by enabling multi-messenger observations, will add further to the discovery potential of LISA. The next decade is crucial to prepare the astrophysical community for LISA’s first observations. This review outlines the extensive landscape of astrophysical theory, numerical simulations, and astronomical observations that are instrumental for modeling and interpreting the upcoming LISA datastream. To this aim, the current knowledge in three main source classes for LISA is reviewed; ultra-compact stellar-mass binaries, massive black hole binaries, and extreme or interme-diate mass ratio inspirals. The relevant astrophysical processes and the established modeling techniques are summarized. Likewise, open issues and gaps in our understanding of these sources are highlighted, along with an indication of how LISA could help making progress in the different areas. New research avenues that LISA itself, or its joint exploitation with upcoming studies in the electromagnetic domain, will enable, are also illustrated. Improvements in modeling and analysis approaches, such as the combination of numerical simulations and modern data science techniques, are discussed. This review is intended to be a starting point for using LISA as a new discovery tool for understanding our Universe.

23. Characterization of colorectal mucus using infrared spectroscopy: a potential target for bowel cancer screening and diagnosis

Abstract

Biological materials presenting early signs of cancer would be beneficial for cancer screening/diagnosis. In this respect, the suitability of potentially exploiting mucus in colorectal cancer was tested using infrared spectroscopy in combination with statistical modeling. Twenty-six paraffinized colon tissue biopsy sections containing mucus regions from 20 individuals (10 normal and 16 cancerous) were measured using mid-infrared spectroscopic imaging. A digital de-paraffinization, followed by cluster analysis driven digital color-coded multi-staining segmented the infrared images into various histopathological features such as epithelium, connective tissue, stroma, and mucus regions within the tissue sections. Principal component analysis followed by supervised linear discriminant analysis was carried out on pure mucus and epithelial spectra from normal and cancerous regions of the tissue. For the mucus-based classification, a sensitivity of 96%, a specificity of 83%, and an area under the curve performance of 95% was obtained. For the epithelial tissue-based classification, a sensitivity of 72%, a specificity of 88%, and an area under the curve performance of 89% was obtained. The mucus spectral profiles further showed contributions indicative of glycans including that of sialic acid changes between these pathology groups. The study demonstrates that infrared spectroscopic analysis of mucus discriminates colorectal cancers with high sensitivity. This concept could be exploited to develop screening/diagnostic approaches complementary to histopathology.

24. Understanding Transition Pathways of International Development Assistance Students: With More Respect to Stakeholders

Abstract

This paper describes an evaluation of the transition stages of "development assistance program" (DAP) international students (IS) at a large Australian research university. This group has different backgrounds that suggest distinct transition issues compared with students from wealthier families and/or more industrialized nations. We argue that a more circumspect "stakeholder" approach may be useful when investigating such programmes. Stakeholder theory offers a broader platform upon which to identify and realize mutual long-term interests. Using survey-based student self-reports, we analyse longitudinal quantitative data to examine developmental changes and interrelationships between various adjustment pathways. The results inform strategies for both staff and students to manage these transitions, especially by increasing students' sense of control and predictability. The findings may assist other academics and administrators to enhance a range of IS programmes, and shed some light on some specific challenges and successes of DAP students. 26. Fostering International Student Exchanges for Science Students

Abstract

This article outlines an ongoing initiative that was also part of the "Navigating Other Cultures" project at the University of Melbourne. It seeks to address the underrepresentation of science students from this university in international exchange programs. It includes a brief literature review that highlights the intrinsically international nature of science, the need for more internationally competent graduates, and benefits of international experiences for students. Two surveys were designed and administered. The first was intended to gain essential information about the reasons that so few science students choose to undertake international exchange programs. The second asked science faculty staff to provide information about the nature and perceived value of their own international experiences. The findings of both surveys are used to propose future strategies to foster greater participation in international exchanges by science students. (Contains 3 tables and 2 figures.)

28. Navigating Other Cultures: Responses from an Australian University to the Challenge of 'Internationalising the Student Learning Experience'

Abstract

This collection of articles offers some practical responses to what is broadly termed internationalisation in higher education. They relate to work done at a research-intensive university in southeastern Australia, with a specific focus on the student learning experience. Various local interpretations of internationalisation are exemplified and explored in some detail and from different angles. Included are descriptions and findings from innovative projects that arose from the "Navigating Other Cultures" initiative that was funded by the Council for University Teaching and Staff Development (CUTSD) within the Australian Commonwealth Department of Education Training and Youth Affairs. It also includes other initiatives that have arisen more organically and that address both practical and conceptual issues including capitalising on transcultural dynamics in tertiary teaching, analysing the discourses of university internationalisation, and clarifying some elements of intercultural competence. Two articles that were originally part of this collection have been published elsewhere. They focused on internationalising an accounting curriculum (Cobbin & Lee, 2002) and integrating academic and work-based wisdom in international fieldwork (Webber, 2005). (Contains 2 tables.)

This article focuses on one specific aspect of internationalisation in higher education: better understanding intercultural effectiveness so that university teachers can facilitate related student learning. It adopts an "actionable" definition of internationalisation to suggest ways to improve processes associated with the design, delivery, assessment, and evaluation of educational programs for the benefit of students from all backgrounds. Key terms and concepts are operationally defined, conceptual and applied issues are clarified, and some practical strategies are offered for staff who may be interested in improving international and intercultural dimensions of teaching in higher education. Abstract

Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will be a transformative experiment for gravitational wave astronomy as it will offer unique opportunities to address many key astrophysical questions in a completely novel way. The synergy with ground-based and other space-based instruments in the electromagnetic domain, by enabling multi-messenger observations, will add further to the discovery potential of LISA. The next decade is crucial to prepare the astrophysical community for LISA's first observations. This review outlines the extensive landscape of astrophysical theory, numerical simulations, and astronomical observations that are instrumental for modeling and interpreting the upcoming LISA datastream. To this aim, the current knowledge in three main source classes for LISA is reviewed: ultra-compact stellar-mass binaries, massive black hole binaries, and extreme or intermediate mass ratio inspirals. The relevant astrophysical processes and the established modeling techniques are summarized. Likewise, open issues and gaps in our understanding of these sources are highlighted, along with an indication of how LISA could help make progress in the different areas. New research avenues that LISA itself, or its joint exploitation with studies in the electromagnetic domain, will enable, are also illustrated. Improvements in modeling and analysis approaches, such as the combination of numerical simulations and modern data science techniques, are discussed.
