Educational effectiveness research (EER) has accumulated much knowledge in the areas of school effectiveness research (SER), teacher effectiveness research (TER) and school/system improvement research (SSIR). Yet many schools and educational systems are not making enough use of the material and their insights. The article reviews evidence of practitioner engagement and finds it limited in the areas of SER, greater in the area of TER and most prevalent in SSIR. Policy-maker engagement has been notable in some countries, but more limited in others. The article concludes by arguing for a new paradigm of EER that studies multiple levels of the educational system simultaneously utilising multiple methods and involves practitioners and policy-makers in a true EER community of expertise, in order to increase the reach and take-up of the discipline. 33 1 3 19 Cited By :4

Gradient-corrected density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out to develop a scaled quantum mechanical (SQM) force field for nickel octaethylporphyrin (NiOEP). Frequencies for all vibrations were calculated for several conformers and isotopomers of NiOEP. Assignments of infrared active vibrations were made upon the basis of normal coordinate analysis of the resulting DFT-SQM force field. The spectra and vibrational assignments agree well with previously reported experimental infrared data for NiOEP, with only eight of the peaks in the simulated natural abundance spectrum being more than 10 cm-1 apart from their counterparts on the experimental natural abundance spectrum. Theoretically calculated isotopic shifts on simulated spectra resemble isotopic shifts observed experimentally. All but four shifts in the simulated meso-deuterated spectrum are within the same order of magnitude and in the same direction as those reported for experimental meso-deuteration, and none of the simulated 15N shifts were more than 2 cm-1 larger or smaller than their respective experimental shifts.

Vascularitis is a well-known extrahepatic manifestation of chronic hepatitis C. Mixed cryoglobulinemia is the most common form. To our knowledge, the present case is the first report associating chronic hepatitis C and temporal arteritis.A 56-year-old man with chronic hepatitis C in the precirrhogenic phase presented with fever and weight loss. The patient complained of pain of the scapular and pelvic girdles and headache and physical examination revealed claudication of the jaw and abolition of the upper limb pulses. Biopsy of the temporal artery confirmed the diagnosis of Horton's disease. The patient also had bilateral stenosis of the sub-clavian arteries.This observation of Horton's disease involving large vessels in a patient with chronic hepatitis C suggests that an infectious factor might trigger vascularitis.
