Abstract

High-significance evidences of the existence of a high-energy diffuse flux of cosmic neutrinos have emerged in the last decade from several observations by the IceCube Collaboration. The ANTARES neutrino telescope took data for 15 years in the Mediterranean Sea, from 2007 to 2022, and collected a high-purity all-flavour neutrino sample. The search for a diffuse cosmic neutrino signal using this dataset is presented in this article. This final analysis did not provide a statistically significant observation of the cosmic diffuse flux. However, this is converted into limits on the properties of the cosmic neutrino spectrum. In particular, given the sensitivity of the ANTARES neutrino telescope between 1 and 50 TeV, constraints on single-power-law hypotheses are derived for the cosmic diffuse flux below 20 TeV, especially for power-law fits of the IceCube data with spectral index softer than 2.8.

Abstract

Position calibration in the deep sea is typically done by means of acoustic multilateration using three or more acoustic emitters installed at known positions. Rather than using hydrophones as receivers that are exposed to the ambient pressure, the sound signals can be coupled to piezo ceramics glued to the inside of existing containers for electronics or measuring instruments of a deep sea infrastructure. The ANTARES neutrino telescope operated from 2006 until 2022 in the Mediterranean Sea at a depth exceeding 2000m. It comprised nearly 900 glass spheres with 432mm diameter and 15mm thickness, equipped with photomultiplier tubes to detect Cherenkov light from tracks of charged elementary particles. In an experimental setup within ANTARES, piezo sensors have been glued to the inside of such - otherwise empty - glass spheres. These sensors recorded signals from acoustic emitters with frequencies from 46545 to 60235Hz. Two waves propagating through the glass sphere are found as a result of the excitation by the waves in the water. These can be qualitatively associated with symmetric and asymmetric Lamb-like waves of zeroth order: a fast (early) one with $v_e \approx 5$mm/$\mu$s and a slow (late) one with $v_\ell \approx 2$mm/$\mu$s. Taking these findings into account improves the accuracy of the position calibration. The results can be transferred to the KM3NeT neutrino telescope, currently under construction at multiple sites in the Mediterranean Sea, for which the concept of piezo sensors glued to the inside of glass spheres has been adapted for monitoring the positions of the photomultiplier tubes., Comment: Published by "Experimental Astronomy"

Abstract

Monochromatic gamma-ray signals constitute a potential smoking gun signature for annihilating or decaying dark matter particles that could relatively easily be distinguished from astrophysical or instrumental backgrounds. We provide an updated assessment of the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to such signals, based on observations of the Galactic centre region as well as of selected dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We find that current limits and detection prospects for dark matter masses above 300 GeV will be significantly improved, by up to an order of magnitude in the multi-TeV range. This demonstrates that CTA will set a new standard for gamma-ray astronomy also in this respect, as the world's largest and most sensitive high-energy gamma-ray observatory, in particular due to its exquisite energy resolution at TeV energies and the adopted observational strategy focussing on regions with large dark matter densities. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date instrument response functions, and we thoroughly model the effect of instrumental systematic uncertainties in our statistical treatment. Abstract

The hydrogen deuteride (HD) molecule is an important deuterium tracer in astrophysical studies. The atmospheres of gas giants are dominated by molecular hydrogen, and simultaneous observation of H$_2$ and HD lines provides reliable information on the D/H ratios on these planets. The reference spectroscopic parameters play a crucial role in such studies. Under thermodynamic conditions encountered in these atmospheres, the spectroscopic studies of HD require not only the knowledge of line intensities and positions but also accurate reference data on pressure-induced line shapes and shifts. Our aim is to provide accurate collision-induced line-shape parameters for HD lines that cover any thermodynamic conditions relevant to the atmospheres of giant planets, i.e., any relevant temperature, pressure, and perturbing gas (the H$_2$/He mixture) composition. We perform quantum-scattering calculations on a new highly accurate ab initio potential energy surface, and we use scattering S-matrices obtained this way to determine the collision-induced line-shape parameters. We use the cavity ring-down spectroscopy for validation of our theoretical methodology. We report accurate collision-induced line-shape parameters for the pure rotational R(0), R(1), and R(2) lines, the most relevant HD lines for the investigations of atmospheres of the giant planets. Besides the basic Voigt-profile collisional parameters (i.e. the broadening and shift parameters), we also report their speed dependences and the complex Dicke parameter, which can influence the effective width and height of the HD lines up to almost a factor of 2 for giant planet conditions. The sub-percent-level accuracy, reached in this work, considerably improves the previously available data. All the reported parameters are consistent with the HITRAN database format, hence allowing for the use of HAPI for generating the beyond-Voigt spectra of HD.

6. Heterodyne dispersive cavity ring-down spectroscopy exploiting eigenmode frequencies for high-fidelity measurements

Abstract

Measuring low light absorption with combined uncertainty < 1 permille is crucial in a wide range of applications. Popular cavity ring-down spectroscopy can provide ultra-high precision, below 0.01 permille, but its accuracy is strongly dependent on the measurement capabilities of the detection system and typically is about 10 permille. Here, we exploit the optical frequency information carried by the ring-down cavity electromagnetic field, not explored in conventional CRDS, for high-fidelity spectroscopy. Instead of measuring only the decaying light intensity, we perform heterodyne detection of ring-downs followed by Fourier analysis to provide exact frequencies of optical cavity modes and a dispersive spectrum of a gas sample from them. This approach is insensitive to inaccuracies in light intensity measurements and eliminates the problem of detector band nonlinearity, the main cause of measurement error in traditional CRDS. Using the CO and HD line intensities as examples, we demonstrate the sub-permille accuracy of our method, confirmed by the best ab initio results, and the long-term repeatability of our dispersion measurements at 10^(-4) level. Such results have not been achieved in optical spectroscopy before. The high accuracy of the presented method indicates its potential in atmospheric studies, isotope ratio metrology, thermometry, and the establishment of primary gas standards.

Abstract

High-energy neutrinos could be produced in the interaction of charged cosmic rays with matter or radiation surrounding astrophysical sources. To look for transient sources associated with neutrino emission, a follow-up program of neutrino alerts has been operating within the ANTARES Collaboration since 2009. This program, named TAToO, has triggered robotic optical telescopes (MASTER, TAROT, ROTSE and the SVOM ground based telescopes) immediately after the detection of any relevant neutrino candidate and scheduled several observations in the weeks following the detection. A subset of ANTARES events with highest probabilities of being of cosmic origin has also been followed by the Swift and the INTEGRAL satellites, the Murchison Widefield Array radio telescope and the H.E.S.S. high-energy gamma-ray telescope. The results of twelve years of observations are reported. No optical counterpart has been significantly associated with an ANTARES candidate neutrino signal during image analysis. Constraints on transient neutrino emission have been set. In September 2015, ANTARES issued a neutrino alert and during the follow-up, a potential transient counterpart was identified by Swift and MASTER. A multi-wavelength follow-up campaign has allowed to identify the nature of this source and has proven its fortuitous association with the neutrino. Abstract

A new nanothermite system, composed of titanium and tungsten trioxide is reported. Initial investigations show that it has low-average sensitivity to mechanical stimuli (friction, impact), but that its sensitivity to laser irradiation can be controlled in a moderately wide range. The combustion of this nanothermite system takes place at a very high apparent temperature (> 3695 K) and it follows the key predictions of the established reactive sintering mechanism, as supported by SEM-EDS and XRD analyses.

Abstract

The detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (GW170817), along with the discovery of the electromagnetic counterparts of this gravitational wave event, ushered in a new era of multimessenger astronomy, providing the first direct evidence that BNS mergers are progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Such events may also produce very-high-energy (VHE, > 100GeV) photons which have yet to be detected in coincidence with a gravitational wave signal. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation VHE observatory which aims to be indispensable in this search, with an unparalleled sensitivity and ability to slew anywhere on the sky within a few tens of seconds. New observing modes and follow-up strategies are being developed for CTA to rapidly cover localization areas of gravitational wave events that are typically larger than the CTA field of view. This work will evaluate and provide estimations on the expected number of of gravitational wave events that will be observable with CTA, considering both on- and off-axis emission. Abstract

Active galaxies, especially blazars, are among the most promising neutrino source candidates. To date, ANTARES searches for these objects considered GeV-TeV $\gamma$-ray bright blazars. Here, a statistically complete radio-bright blazar sample is used as the target for searches of origins of neutrinos collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope over 13 years of operation. The hypothesis of a neutrino-blazar directional correlation is tested by pair counting and by a complementary likelihood-based approach. The resulting post-trial $p$-value is $3.0\%$ ($2.2\sigma$ in the two-sided convention), possibly indicating a correlation. Additionally, a time-dependent analysis is performed to search for temporal clustering of neutrino candidates as a mean of detecting neutrino flares in blazars. None of the investigated sources alone reaches a significant flare detection level. However, the presence of 18 sources with a pre-trial significance above $3\sigma$ indicates a $p=1.4\%$ ($2.5\sigma$ in the two-sided convention) detection of a time-variable neutrino flux. An \textit{a posteriori} investigation reveals an intriguing temporal coincidence of neutrino, radio, and $\gamma$-ray flares of the J0242+1101 blazar at a $p=0.5\%$ ($2.9\sigma$ in the two-sided convention) level. Altogether, the results presented here suggest a possible connection of neutrino candidates detected by the ANTARES telescope with radio-bright blazars.

Abstract

Galaxy clusters are expected to be dark matter (DM) reservoirs and storage rooms for the cosmic-ray protons (CRp) that accumulate along the cluster's formation history. Accordingly, they are excellent targets to search for signals of DM annihilation and decay at gamma-ray energies and are predicted to be sources of large-scale gamma-ray emission due to hadronic interactions in the intracluster medium. We estimate the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to detect diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Perseus galaxy cluster. We perform a detailed spatial and spectral modelling of the expected signal for the DM and the CRp components. For each, we compute the expected CTA sensitivity. The observing strategy of Perseus is also discussed. In the absence of a diffuse signal (non-detection), CTA should constrain the CRp to thermal energy ratio within the radius $R_{500}$ down to about $X_{500}<3\times 10^{-3}$, for a spatial CRp distribution that follows the thermal gas and a CRp spectral index $\alpha_{\rm CRp}=2.3$. Under the optimistic assumption of a pure hadronic origin of the Perseus radio mini-halo and depending on the assumed magnetic field profile, CTA should measure $\alpha_{\rm CRp}$ down to about $\Delta\alpha_{\rm CRp}\simeq 0.1$ and the CRp spatial distribution with 10% precision. Regarding DM, CTA should improve the current ground-based gamma-ray DM limits from clusters observations on the velocity-averaged annihilation cross-section by a factor of up to $\sim 5$, depending on the modelling of DM halo substructure. In the case of decay of DM particles, CTA will explore a new region of the parameter space, reaching models with $\tau_{\chi}>10^{27}$s for DM masses above 1 TeV. These constraints will provide unprecedented sensitivity to the physics of both CRp acceleration and transport at cluster scale and to TeV DM particle models, especially in the decay scenario., Comment: 93 pages (including author list, appendix and references), 143 figures. Abstract

The speed-dependent spectral line profiles collapse into a simple Lorentz profile in the regime dominated by the velocity-changing collisions. We derive general formulas for the effective width and shift of the Lorentzian for arbitrary speed-dependent collisional broadening and shift and velocity-changing collision operators. For a quadratic speed dependence of collisional broadening and shift, and the billiard ball model of velocity-changing collisions, we provide simple analytical expressions for the effective Lorentzian width and shift. We show that the effective Lorentzian width and shift split into components originating from the: well-known Dicke-narrowed Doppler width, speed-averaged collisional broadening and shift, their speed dependencies, and a product term that mixes the contributions of the broadening and shift speed dependencies. We show how the components depend on rates of speed-changing and velocity-changing collisions related to the perturber/absorber mass ratio. Abstract

The local Cosmic Ray (CR) energy spectrum exhibits a spectral softening at energies around 3~PeV. Sources which are capable of accelerating hadrons to such energies are called hadronic PeVatrons. However, hadronic PeVatrons have not yet been firmly identified within the Galaxy. Several source classes, including Galactic Supernova Remnants (SNRs), have been proposed as PeVatron candidates. The potential to search for hadronic PeVatrons with the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is assessed. The focus is on the usage of very high energy $\gamma$-ray spectral signatures for the identification of PeVatrons. Assuming that SNRs can accelerate CRs up to knee energies, the number of Galactic SNRs which can be identified as PeVatrons with CTA is estimated within a model for the evolution of SNRs. Additionally, the potential of a follow-up observation strategy under moonlight conditions for PeVatron searches is investigated. Statistical methods for the identification of PeVatrons are introduced, and realistic Monte--Carlo simulations of the response of the CTA observatory to the emission spectra from hadronic PeVatrons are performed. Based on simulations of a simplified model for the evolution for SNRs, the detection of a $\gamma$-ray signal from in average 9 Galactic PeVatron SNRs is expected to result from the scan of the Galactic plane with CTA after 10 hours of exposure. CTA is also shown to have excellent potential to confirm these sources as PeVatrons in deep observations with $\mathcal{O}(100)$ hours of exposure per source., Comment: 34 pages, 16 figures, Accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics

Abstract

Since 2015 the LIGO and Virgo interferometers have detected gravitational waves from almost one hundred coalescences of compact objects (black holes and neutron stars). This article presents the results of a search performed with data from the ANTARES telescope to identify neutrino counterparts to the gravitational wave sources detected during the third LIGO/Virgo observing run and reported in the catalogues GWTC-2, GWTC-2.1, and GWTC-3. This search is sensitive to all-sky neutrinos of all flavours and of energies $>100$ GeV, thanks to the inclusion of both track-like events (mainly induced by $\nu_\mu$ charged-current interactions) and shower-like events (induced by other interaction types). Neutrinos are selected if they are detected within $\pm 500$ s from the GW merger and with a reconstructed direction compatible with its sky localisation. No significant excess is found for any of the 80 analysed GW events, and upper limits on the neutrino emission are derived. Using the information from the GW catalogues and assuming isotropic emission, upper limits on the total energy $E_{\rm tot, \nu}$ emitted as neutrinos of all flavours and on the ratio $f_\nu = E_{\rm tot, \nu}/E_{\rm GW}$ between neutrino and GW emissions are also computed. Finally, a stacked analysis of all the 72 binary black hole mergers (respectively the 7 neutron star - black hole merger candidates) has been performed to constrain the typical neutrino emission within this population, leading to the limits: $E_{\rm tot, \nu} < 4.0 \times 10^{53}$ erg and $f_\nu < 0.15$ (respectively, $E_{\rm tot, \nu} < 3.2 \times 10^{53}$ erg and $f_\nu < 0.88$) for $E^{-2}$ spectrum and isotropic emission. Abstract

IntroductionThis study aimed to assess the development of speed, endurance and power in young football players and to create percentile charts and tables for standardized assessment.MethodsCross-sectional data were collected from 495 male players aged 12–16 years at RKS Raków Częstochowa Academy in 2018–2022. Players participated in a systematic training in which running time 5 m, 10 m, 30 m, lower limb power (standing long jump), and Maximum Aerobic Speed (MAS) were measured using the 30–15 Intermittent Fitness Test. All tests were performed under constant environmental conditions by qualified personnel. Statistical analysis included ANOVA and percentile distribution for P3, P10, P25, P50, P75, P90, P97.ResultsResults indicated that the most significant improvements occurred between the ages of 13 and 14, with increased speed over all distances and a significant increase in power. Percentile tables were developed, highlighting improvements in speed 5 m: 0.087–0.126 s; 10 m 0.162–0.215 s; 30 m: 0.438–0.719 s and power in the long jump test: 31–48 cm. Improvements in MAS ranged from 0.3 to 0.6 m/s across the percentiles.DiscussionThe results highlight the need for individual training programs tailored to the biological maturity of players. The developed percentile charts and tables offer a valuable tool for coaches and sports scientists to monitor progress, optimize training loads, and minimize the risk of injury, providing a frame of reference for assessing the physical development of young soccer players. Future research should focus on extending these charts and tables to other age groups and genders to refine training methodologies further.

Abstract

BackgroundCannabis and its derivatives show encouraging therapeutic effects in the treatment of various diseases. However, further studies are needed to better assess their efficacy and safety. A promising base for research in the field of medicine and additional pharmacovigilance is social networks, in which experience and knowledge are exchanged between researchers, doctors, and patients, as well as information about the potential risks and benefits of using drugs for medical purposes is disseminated. The aim of this study was to investigate the reported efficiency and safety of medical use of cannabinoids in patients using posts on the social media Instagram and analyze the observed trends.MethodsSocial media listening platform Apify was used to collect data with hashtags as of June 4, 2024, including posts from 2023 and 2024, with some data extending into later periods, in compliance with a systematic approach to data collection. The analysis of the data obtained from the research was conducted using the RStudio platform.ResultsThe analysis covered 1,466 posts containing hashtags related to cannabinoids. The posts studied were categorized as follows: 33.08% focused on advertising and commercialization, 25.58% on personal experience, 21.35% on other topics, and 19.99% contained educational content. An analysis of overall content relevance found that the majority of Instagram posts (81.79%) related to cannabis and cannabinoid hashtags are relevant. Most of the Instagram posts studied were posters, followed by personal photos and videos. The analysis shows that English dominates the studied category (70.74% of posts), while German, French, Spanish, and other languages also occupy a significant place, emphasizing the importance of a multilingual approach in content analysis. It has been revealed that organizations publish a larger percentage of posts under this study, with a higher percentage of relevance. Personal experience stories receive a significant number of “likes” indicating a strong emotional connection between audience and content. Instagram discussions about cannabinoid treatment support evidence from scientific studies about their effectiveness in treating a range of diseases, such as epilepsy with Lennox–Gastaut and Dravet syndromes, multiple sclerosis, cancer, and HIV-cachexia, nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy. At the same time, they emphasize the need for further clinical studies to better assess safety, side effects, and optimal dosages. Advertising and commercial posts can contribute to increased cannabis use, highlighting the need to raise awareness of risks and strengthen preventive measures.ConclusionAnalysis of content on the social media Instagram can complement traditional scientific research by providing information on the real use of cannabis and its derivatives, contributing to the development of safe and effective recommendations for its use.

Abstract

BackgroundX (Formerly known as Twitter) healthcare hashtags are a popular healthcare informatics and educational tool among medical professionals. #Globalhealth is one such widely used hashtag with extensive engagement. This study analyses #GlobalHealth to understand its pattern, global digital distribution, and other parameters during the COVID-19 pandemic on X.MethodsData was collected by utilizing posts using #GlobalHealth on X from 1st December 2019 to 1st November 2022. The analysis was performed using Symplur Signals to assess several parameters, such as the cumulative number of posts, impressions, category of users, co-occurring hashtags, and geolocation. The Symplur Rank system was used to assess the impact of influencers using the hashtag.ResultsA total of 843,762 posts were shared by 150,408 X users, with 4,639,144,304 impressions. Most posts (73.8%) were made by unclassified accounts, followed by doctors (4.2%), followed by other health workers. The #COVID19 was the most common co-occurring hashtag (43%). The top locations and the most influential X users came from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Among the top 25 most influential handles, a maximum (N = 09) were based in the United States—most profiles (N = 10) were categorized as international organizations followed by journals (N = 03).ConclusionThe study gives a glimpse into the discrepancies in global distribution and stakeholders of #GlobalHealth. Most posts originated from the global north, which hints at how the trend to #GlobalHealth is not perhaps as global as it is thought to be, and it also reflects upon the real-world scenarios in the context of Global Health Equity. Thus, deeper and wider studies on this digital discrepancy may add more to the existing discourse on the topic.

Abstract

The gut microbiota plays a role in energy homeostasis: its composition differs in lean and obese mice and may impact insulin sensitivity. The immune system has co-evolved with the gut microbiota, but direct regulation of microbial communities by the immune system and its metabolic impact is unclear. Mice lacking the immune cell specific transcription factor T-bet (Tbx21) are insulin sensitive. Compared with wild-type mice, T-bet deficient mice were found to have a higher proportion of colonic regulatory T cells despite significantly fewer colonic T cells, B cells and NK cells. Microbiota deletion by administration of antibiotics, increased colonic immune cell numbers. Furthermore, we report that T-bet−/− mice have an altered gut microbial composition and fecal short-chain fatty acid content, with an increase in butyrate production, compared with wild-type mice. Finally, in a proof-of concept study, we show that the enhanced insulin sensitivity observed in T-bet−/− mice is temporarily transmissible to antibiotic-treated wild-type mice through fecal transfer. Immune regulation of the gut microbiota by T-bet may be a novel pathway modulating insulin sensitivity.

Abstract

Interactions of cosmic ray protons, atomic nuclei, and electrons in the interstellar medium in the inner part of the Milky Way produce a $\gamma$-ray flux from the Galactic Ridge. If the $\gamma$-ray emission is dominated by proton and nuclei interactions, a neutrino flux comparable to the $\gamma$-ray flux is expected from the same sky region. Data collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope are used to constrain the neutrino flux from the Galactic Ridge in the 1-100 TeV energy range. Neutrino events reconstructed both as tracks and showers are considered in the analysis and the selection is optimized for the search of an excess in the region $|l| < 30\deg$, $|b| < 2\deg$. The expected background in the search region is estimated using an off-zone region with similar sky coverage. Neutrino signal originating from a power-law spectrum with spectral index ranging from $\Gamma_\nu=1$ to $4$ is simulated in both channels. The observed energy distributions are fitted to constrain the neutrino emission from the Ridge. The energy distributions in the signal region are inconsistent with the background expectation at $\sim 96\%$ confidence level. The mild excess over the background is consistent with a neutrino flux with a power law with a spectral index $2.45^{+0.22}_{-0.34}$ and a flux normalization $dN_\nu/dE_\nu = 4.0^{+2.7}_{-2.0} \times 10^{-16} \text{GeV}^{-1} \text{cm}^{-2} \text{s}^{-1} \text{sr}^{-1}$ at 40 TeV reference energy. Such flux is consistent with the expected neutrino signal if the bulk of the observed $\gamma$-ray flux from the Galactic Ridge originates from interactions of cosmic ray protons and nuclei with a power-law spectrum extending well into the PeV energy range., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

By constantly monitoring at least one complete hemisphere of the sky, neutrino telescopes are well designed to detect neutrinos emitted by transient astrophysical events. Real-time searches with the ANTARES telescope have been performed to look for neutrino candidates coincident with gamma-ray bursts detected by the Swift and Fermi satellites, highenergy neutrino events registered by IceCube, transient events from blazars monitored by HAWC, photon-neutrino coincidences by AMON notices and gravitational wave candidates observed by LIGO/Virgo. By requiring temporal coincidence, this approach increases the sensitivity and the significance of a potential discovery. Thanks to the good angular accuracy of neutrino candidates reconstructed with the ANTARES telescope, a coincident detection can also improve the positioning area of non-well localised triggers such as those detected by gravitational wave interferometers. Abstract

Introduction Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is the most effective treatment of late osteoarthritis (OA) and is considered among the most successful surgical procedures in general. However, about 20% of patients remain dissatisfied. An important aspect of TKA is the proper choice of implant type – posterior stabilized (PS) or cruciate retaining (CR). Both have their indications for use based on intraoperative functional examination, but no objective radiological criteria have yet been developed. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the posterior subluxation of the tibia on preoperative radiograms and implant type used. Material and methods A series of 52 patients undergoing TKA were included in the study. All patients were over 50 years old, had clinically and radiologically confirmed primary OA of grade IV on the Kellgren-Lawrence scale and were undergoing a primary total knee replacement (TKR) with a PS or CR design. Preoperative lateral radiographs were analysed retrospectively. The tibial translation ratio was calculated as a percentage of subluxation in the length of the tibial plateau. Results There were no significant differences between implant types in regard to investigated parameters. However, there was a significant difference between the groups CR and PS in regard to age (68.5 [60.0–72.0] vs. 72.5 [68.0–75.0], p = 0.006). Conclusions This study revealed that preoperative tibial translation does not significantly correlate with the choice of implant type and so probably not with posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) function and efficiency either. Additionally, this study showed that PCL insufficiency is related to the age of the patients, because of the more frequent choice of the PS implant type for the surgery in older patients than in the case of the CR implant type.

Abstract

Introduction Fracture of the proximal femur is common in elderly patients, in fact threatening their lives. Age-related sarcopenia may be involved in the imbalance resulting in the injury. Handy and readily accessible biochemical tests would be useful to assess the musculoskeletal system condition in daily practice. The aim of the study was to determine whether there is any relation between muscle decay and fracture of the proximal femur and to assess bone quality in elderly patients. Material and methods In the study 22 patients who represented the treatment group were hospitalized due to proximal femur fracture. Eighteen patients from the control group with no fracture in their history were admitted to the Internal Medicine Department. Anyone treated for osteoporosis, immune disease affecting protein balance, neoplasm, mental illness, heart failure, or myocardial infarction was excluded from the study. In every case a blood sample from an elbow vein was drawn, collected in EDTA-K2 tubes, and then centrifuged to separate plasma from the whole blood. Subsequently, the concentrations of C-terminal cross-linked telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX-I), sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and creatine kinase (CK) in plasma were determined using commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Results The CK plasma concentration differed between the patient groups (p = 0.011). The SHBG plasma concentration was significantly higher in the treatment group (p = 0.006), whereas a slight difference in CTX-I plasma concentration between the groups was found (p = 0.038). No significant correlations between plasma CK, SHBG or CTX-I were found (p > 0.05). Conclusions Creatine kinase is actually not an appropriate marker for the clinical assessment of muscle tissue quality in patients with or at risk of proximal femur fracture. Analyzing the quality of bone tissue, we can conclude it was poorer in patients with proximal femur fracture than in the control group.

Abstract

In the quest for high-energy neutrino sources, the Astrophysical Multimessenger Observatory Network (AMON) has implemented a new search by combining data from the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory and the Astronomy with a Neutrino Telescope and Abyss environmental RESearch (ANTARES) neutrino telescope. Using the same analysis strategy as in a previous detector combination of HAWC and IceCube data, we perform a search for coincidences in HAWC and ANTARES events that are below the threshold for sending public alerts in each individual detector. Data were collected between July 2015 and February 2020 with a livetime of 4.39 years. Over this time period, 3 coincident events with an estimated false-alarm rate of $< 1$ coincidence per year were found. Abstract

In this work, a search for nuclearites of strange quark matter by using nine years of ANTARES data taken in the period 2009-2017 is presented. The passage through matter of these particles is simulated %according to the model of de R\'{u}jula and Glashow taking into account a detailed description of the detector response to nuclearites and of the data acquisition conditions. A down-going flux of cosmic nuclearites with Galactic velocities ($\beta = 10^{-3}$) was considered for this study. The mass threshold for detecting these particles at the detector level is \mbox{ $4 \times 10^{13}$ GeV/c$^{2}$}. Upper limits on the nuclearite flux for masses up to $10^{17}$ GeV/c$^{2}$ at the level of $\sim 5 \times 10^{-17}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ sr$^{-1}$ are obtained. These are the first upper limits on nuclearites established with a neutrino telescope and the most stringent ever set for Galactic velocities., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

34. Impact of acetabular roof’s angle on precision of cup center of rotation reproduction and placement in total hip arthroplasty

Abstract

Introduction Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is nowadays considered as the most effective treatment option for end-stage hip osteoarthritis (OA) and one of the most successful orthopedic procedures. Precise reproduction of the center of rotation (COR) is among the most important aspects of recreating native hip biomechanics after THA as it is strictly related to muscle tension and force distribution within the hip joint. Both vertical and horizontal shift in cup positioning and COR restoration are commonly observed radiological signs corresponding with lesser functional outcome. The aim of this study was to assess whether the superior border of the native acetabulum morphology has an impact on cup positioning and COR restoration in patients undergoing THA as treatment of primary OA of the hip. Material and methods A cohort of 150 consecutive patients with diagnosis of end-stage primary hip OA who underwent THA via an anterolateral approach with the same implant in 2021 was analyzed retrospectively. Standard standing pelvic X-rays were performed pre- and postopera- tively and appropriate measurements were taken. Several radiological parameters on obtained X-rays were assessed. Statistical analysis of all the measurements was performed. Results There was a statistically significant positive weak correlation between cup offset and ace- tabular roof angle ( rs = 0.25, p = 0.002). There were statistically insignificant positive correlations between acetabular roof angle and COR restoration ( rs = 0.14, p = 0.097), acetabular roof angle and total offset ( rs = 0.087, p = 0.29) and a negative correlation between acetabular roof angle and femoral offset ( rs = 0.071, p = 0.39). Conclusions The present study revealed that preoperative acetabular roof angle influences the positioning of the prosthetic cup in the transverse axis. There also seems to be a correlation between the acetabular roof angle and COR restoration, but its significance needs further evaluation. Surgeons could use this knowledge to preoperatively assess the risk of cup malposition and adjust their technique during the THA procedure with probable improvement of hip function.

35. Zmienność temperatury i wilgotności gleby w pasmie Połoniny Wetlińskiej (Bieszczady Zachodnie)

Abstract

W pracy określono zmienność temperatury i wilgotności gleb brunatnych na trzech stanowiskach w paśmie Połoniny Wetlińskiej i związek tych parametrów z warunkami meteorologicznymi. Badania prowadzono na dwóch głębokościach (20 cm i 45 cm) w okresie od 23.11.2020 r. do 19.11.2021 r. Badania wykazały występowanie wyższej temperatury gleby od końca kwietnia do sierpnia w przypowierzchniowej części analizowanych gleb oraz jej silną zależność od temperatury powietrza w półroczu ciepłym i najwyższą średnią temperaturę na stanowisku eksponowanym w kierunku południowym (7,5ºC na obu głębokościach). W półroczu chłodnym wykazano mniejszą zmienność temperatury gleby, izolujące działanie pokrywy śnieżnej i brak przemarzania gleb w badanych lokalizacjach. Średnie roczne wartości wilgotności objętościowej badanych gleb mieściły się w zakresie 42–53% na głębokości 20 cm i 39–44% na głębokości 45 cm. Wyższe wartości wilgotności objętościowej cechowały te spośród badanych gleb, które charakteryzują się mniejszym udziałem frakcji iłowej, mniejszą gęstością objętościową i wyższą zawartością materii organicznej. Na wzrost wilgotności gleb, poza infiltracją wody opadowej i roztopowej, wpływać może również dostawa wód spływu śródpokrywowego. Wilgotność analizowanych gleb była zależna od sumy opadów w okresie poprzedzającym. W półroczu chłodnym wyższej wilgotności dodatkowo sprzyjała wyższa temperatura powietrza, natomiast w półroczu ciepłym odwrotnie – niższa. W pracy udokumentowano mniejszą zmienność wilgotności gleb na dwóch polanach śródleśnych na stoku północnym Połoniny Wetlińskiej względem stanowiska na otwartej przestrzeni na stoku południowym. Zmienność wilgotności była najmniejsza w okresie zimowym w najwyżej położonym stanowisku blisko grzbietu, a największa w okresie letnim na stoku południowym. Ponadto, w półroczu ciepłym ewapotranspiracja stanowiła ważny czynnik, wpływający na większą dynamikę zmian wilgotności objętościowej gleb w płytszej części badanych profili. Większe zdolności retencyjne gleb w górnych częściach bieszczadzkich pasm górskich mogą wpływać na efektywniejsze zasilanie zbiorników wód podziemnych, które następnie są drenowane przez wysoko położone źródła.

Abstract

Searches for dark matter (DM) have not provided any solid evidence for the existence of weakly interacting massive particles in the GeV-TeV mass range. Coincidentally, the scale of new physics is being pushed by collider searches well beyond the TeV domain. This situation strongly motivates the exploration of DM masses much larger than a TeV. Secluded scenarios contain a natural way around the unitarity bound on the DM mass, via the early matter domination induced by the mediator of its interactions with the Standard Model. High-energy neutrinos constitute one of the very few direct accesses to energy scales above a few TeV. An indirect search for secluded DM signals has been performed with the ANTARES neutrino telescope using data from 2007 to 2015. Upper limits on the DM annihilation cross section for DM masses up to 6 PeV are presented and discussed.

Abstract

This work presents a new search for magnetic monopoles using data taken with the ANTARES neutrino telescope over a period of 10 years (January 2008 to December 2017). Compared to previous ANTARES searches, this analysis uses a run-by-run simulation strategy, with a larger exposure as well as a new simulation of magnetic monopoles taking into account the Kasama, Yang and Goldhaber model for their interaction cross-section with matter. No signal compatible with the passage of relativistic magnetic monopoles is observed, and upper limits on the flux of magnetic monopoles with $\beta$ = v/c $\geq$ 0.55, are presented. For ultra-relativistic magnetic monopoles the flux limit is $\sim$ 7$\times$$10^{-18}$ $\rm cm^{-2} s^{-1} sr^{-1}$., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in the Journal of High Energy Astrophysics

Abstract

(1) Background: The aim of this study is to determine the intra-rater and test–retest reliability of an upper extremity sway test performed in the one-handed plank position on a force plate and to establish if there are any between-limb differences in assessment with either open or closed eyes. (2) Methods: Fifteen males participated in this study (23.1 ± 2.3 years; 71.2 ± 7.4 kg; 175 ± 4 cm). The sway test (ST) on the force plate was performed during two separate visits, with a one-week interval between tests performed with eyes open and closed, separately for the left and right upper limbs. (3) Results: Intra-rater reliability for measurements with eyes open and closed on both the left and right sides was good to excellent for almost all variables (ICC = 0.84–0.96). Moderate reliability was observed only for the center of pressure (COP) area. Test–retest reliability was somewhat lower. With eyes open and closed, good to excellent reliability was observed for COP length and velocity in the M-L direction and for the total COP length (ICC = 0.77–0.95). However, for COP length and velocity in the A-P direction, as well as for COP area, reliability was moderate (ICC = 0.58–0.70). No significant differences were found between the left and right sides in any variable. (4) Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that the upper limb sway test performed on a force plate in the one-handed plank position, both with eyes open and closed, is a reliable measurement option and has practical applications in clinical settings, including for baseline assessments, return-to-play protocols, and injury prevention strategies.

Abstract

In this work, we have investigated the thermal features of hydrogen peroxide-based energetic materials formulations. Initial research has shown that both the auxiliary oxidiser (sodium nitrate, potassium nitrate or calcium nitrate) and sensitising agent (glass microspheres) have significant influence on the rate of hydrogen peroxide decay in such formulations. In terms of the thermal features of the tested energetic materials, a similar and significant influence of the auxiliary oxidising agent and sensitising agent choice was observed. We have established that the use of calcium nitrate as an auxiliary oxidising agent (at ambient temperature of approx 20 °C), which allows the formulations to maintain capacity to undergo detonation for longer under storage conditions, negatively impacts the qualitative characteristics of the mixture as an energetic material. The thermal effects accompanying chemical interaction are much smaller than mixtures containing potassium and sodium nitrates as additional oxidising agents. Another important conclusion is that glass microspheres as sensitising agents significantly impact the thermal decomposition processes of the investigated on-site mixed (OSM) energetic material (EM) samples, except for the mixture using calcium nitrate.

Abstract

Solar Atmospheric Neutrinos (SA$\nu$s) are produced by the interaction of cosmic rays with the solar medium. The detection of SA$\nu$s would provide useful information on the composition of primary cosmic rays as well as the solar density. These neutrinos represent an irreducible source of background for indirect searches for dark matter towards the Sun and the measurement of their flux would allow for a better assessment of the uncertainties related to these searches. In this paper we report on the analysis performed, based on an unbinned likelihood maximisation, to search for SA$\nu$s with the ANTARES neutrino telescope. After analysing the data collected over 11 years, no evidence for a solar atmospheric neutrino signal has been found. An upper limit at 90\% confidence level on the flux of solar atmospheric neutrinos has been obtained, equal to 7$\times$$10^{-11}$ [TeV$^{-1}$cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$] at E$_\nu =$ 1 TeV for the reference cosmic ray model assumed., Comment: Sections renamed and reorganized as asked by the Journal

Abstract

For several decades, the origin of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) has been an unsolved question of high-energy astrophysics. One approach for solving this puzzle is to correlate UHECRs with high-energy neutrinos, since neutrinos are a direct probe of hadronic interactions of cosmic rays and are not deflected by magnetic fields. In this paper, we present three different approaches for correlating the arrival directions of neutrinos with the arrival directions of UHECRs. The neutrino data is provided by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and ANTARES, while the UHECR data with energies above $\sim$50 EeV is provided by the Pierre Auger Observatory and the Telescope Array. All experiments provide increased statistics and improved reconstructions with respect to our previous results reported in 2015. The first analysis uses a high-statistics neutrino sample optimized for point-source searches to search for excesses of neutrinos clustering in the vicinity of UHECR directions. The second analysis searches for an excess of UHECRs in the direction of the highest-energy neutrinos. The third analysis searches for an excess of pairs of UHECRs and highest-energy neutrinos on different angular scales. None of the analyses has found a significant excess, and previously reported over-fluctuations are reduced in significance. Abstract

Non-standard interactions of neutrinos arising in many theories beyond the Standard Model can significantly alter matter effects in atmospheric neutrino propagation through the Earth. In this paper, a search for deviations from the prediction of the standard 3-flavour atmospheric neutrino oscillations using the data taken by the ANTARES neutrino telescope is presented. Ten years of atmospheric neutrino data collected from 2007 to 2016, with reconstructed energies in the range from $\sim$16 GeV to $100$ GeV, have been analysed. A log-likelihood ratio test of the dimensionless coefficients $\varepsilon_{\mu\tau}$ and $\varepsilon_{\tau\tau} - \varepsilon_{\mu\mu}$ does not provide clear evidence of deviations from standard interactions. For normal neutrino mass ordering, the combined fit of both coefficients yields a value 1.7$\sigma$ away from the null result. However, the 68% and 95% confidence level intervals for $\varepsilon_{\mu\tau}$ and $\varepsilon_{\tau\tau} - \varepsilon_{\mu\mu}$, respectively, contain the null value. Best fit values, one standard deviation errors and bounds at the 90% confidence level for these coefficients are given for both normal and inverted mass orderings. The constraint on $\varepsilon_{\mu\tau}$ is among the most stringent to date and it further restrains the strength of possible non-standard interactions in the $\mu - \tau$ sector., Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of several Monte Carlo radiation transport codes and nuclear models on the simulation of secondary neutron spectra and its impact on calculating and measuring neutron doses in proton therapy. Three different multi-purpose Monte Carlo radiation transport codes (FLUKA, MCNPX, Geant4) were used with different available nuclear models to calculate secondary neutron energy spectra at various points inside a water tank phantom with PMMA walls using a 10 cm x 10 cm rectangular, mono-energetic proton beam (110, 150, 180, and 210 MeV). Using Kerma approximation secondary neutron doses were calculated applying fluence-to-dose equivalent conversion coefficients in water. Moreover, the impact of varying spectra for electrochemically etched CR39 detector calibration was analyzed for different codes and models. In distal positions beyond the Bragg peak, results show largest variations between the codes, up to 53% for the high energy neutron fluence at 16 cm from the Bragg peak of the 110 MeV proton beam. In lateral positions, the variation between the codes is smaller and for the total neutron fluence within 20%. Variation in the nuclear models in MCNPX was only visible for the proton beam energies of 180 and 210 MeV and modeling the high energy neutron fluence which reached up to 23% for 210 MeV at 11 cm lateral from the beam axis. Impact on neutron dose equivalent was limited for the different models used (<8%) while it was pronounced for the different codes (45% at 16 cm from the Bragg peak of the 110 MeV proton beam). CR39 calibration factors in lateral positions were on average varying 10% between codes and 5 % between nuclear models.This study demonstrated a large impact on the neutron fluence spectra calculated by different codes while the impact of different models in MCNPX proved to be less prominent for the neutron modeling in proton therapy., Comment: 30 pages, 4 figures, 8 tables, accepted for publication in Radiation Measurements

Abstract

Radiotherapy of pregnant cancer patients is not common, but when applied accurate assessment of the fetus dose is required, especially since the treatment planning systems are not able and do not allow accurate assessment of out-of-field doses. Proton therapy significantly reduces out-of-field doses, such as dose to the fetus, when compared to the photon radiotherapy techniques and as such could be promising for pregnant cancer patients. Within this study Monte Carlo calculations are performed on the three different computational phantoms representing pregnant women, all in second trimester of pregnancy. Simplified proton beam to the pregnant women brain was modelled, and the total dose equivalent (normalized per target dose) to the fetus was calculated. Between MCNPX and MCNP6.2 code versions we observed up to 6% difference. In this work 3 groups participated and the variation between the groups was 8% and 12% for MCNPX and MCNP6.2, respectively. Depending on the phantom used in the calculations the fetal dose was between 0.4 and 0.8 {\mu}Sv/Gy. Major contribution to the total dose came from the neutrons, with only 20% of the dose coming from photons, while other particles have negligible contributions. Abstract

A pebbling move on a graph consists of removing $2$ pebbles from a vertex and adding $1$ pebble to one of the neighbouring vertices. A vertex is called reachable if we can put $1$ pebble on it after a sequence of moves. The optimal pebbling number of a graph is the minimum number $m$ such that there exists a distribution of $m$ pebbles so that each vertex is reachable. For the case of a square grid $n \times m$, Gy\H{o}ri, Katona and Papp recently showed that its optimal pebbling number is at least $\frac{2}{13}nm \approx 0.1538nm$ and at most $\frac{2}{7}nm +O(n+m) \approx 0.2857nm$. We improve the lower bound to $\frac{5092}{28593}nm +O(m+n) \approx 0.1781nm$.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a prevalent metabolic disease. The clinical impact of sustained hyperglycemia on ligament healing has not been well characterized. Diabetes is a known cause of macro-, microvascular, and diabetic ulcer healing difficulties among tissues. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the healing potential occurring in injured and healthy ligaments among diabetic and healthy individuals using a rat model. We hypothesize that DM may contribute to altering the knee medial collateral ligament (MCL), thus its morphology, biochemical fitness, and functionality. The study cohort consisted of 40 rats. The animals were randomized into four equal groups. Groups I and II (20 rats) received saline subcutaneously and served as controls. Groups III and IV (20 rats) were injected with a single dose of streptozotocin (STZ). All animals underwent surgery to cut the left tibial collateral ligament in the hind limb and suture it. The access site was sutured to create inflammation and study the regenerative capacities of animals with normal carbohydrate metabolism and pharmacologically induced diabetes. Each animal then underwent sham surgery to access and suture the right tibial collateral ligament in the hind limb without ligament intervention. After the animals had undergone surgeries, groups II and IV were given melatonin supplementation for 4 weeks. Rats with DM presented with more fibrosis and calcification of the MCL and decreased healing potential. Treatment with melatonin in diabetic rats mitigated alterations and improved the antioxidant status of ligaments from the diabetic group.

Sjögrens disease is a complex autoimmune disease with twelve established susceptibility loci. This genome-wide association study (GWAS) identifies ten novel genome-wide significant (GWS) regions in Sjögrens cases of European ancestry: CD247, NAB1, PTTG1-MIR146A, PRDM1-ATG5, TNFAIP3, XKR6, MAPT-CRHR1, RPTOR-CHMP6-BAIAP6, TYK2, SYNGR1. Polygenic risk scores yield predictability (AUROC = 0.71) and relative risk of 12.08. Interrogation of bioinformatics databases refine the associations, define local regulatory networks of GWS SNPs from the 95% credible set, and expand the implicated gene list to >40. Many GWS SNPs are eQTLs for genes within topologically associated domains in immune cells and/or eQTLs in the main target tissue, salivary glands.

Abstract

Irritable bowel syndrome is a significant health problem that can affect up to 11% of the general population. The problem is far more common among women and young people, especially in their thirties. The aetiology of the disease is not fully understood, but it is now thought that dysregulation of the gut-brain axis may be one of the causes. In addition, psychogenic factors, genetics and dietary habits have been attributed a role in the development of the disease. The diagnosis of the disease is based on the clinical picture and the exclusion of other organic causes that may lead to clinical symptoms. According to the Rome IV criteria, diagnosis of IBS is possible when recurrent abdominal pain is found, occurring at least once a week, for the last 3 months. The pain must be accompanied by at least 2 of the following criteria: it is associated with a bowel movement, with a change in the frequency of bowel movements or with a change in the consistency of the stool. Irritable bowel syndrome is a chronic, recurrent condition, with varying frequency of exacerbations and quiescence, dependent on a number of factors. As no clear aetiology has been established to date, we therefore have no causal treatment and no effective and lasting cure. In this situation, treatment must be comprehensive, involving non-pharmacological management related to changes in lifestyle and eating habits and, in the absence of adequate therapeutic effects, pharmacological treatment. Pharmacological treatment should be symptomatic, targeting the predominant complaints and types of IBS, and we can reach for muscle relaxants, drugs to stimulate intestinal peristalsis, antidepressants, rifaximin, laxatives, antidiarrheals and drugs for bloating, probiotics and herbal medicines, e.g. peppermint oil.
