Introduction: Haemophilia is one of the most common haemorrhagic diseases from the group of coagulopathies and results from a deficiency of factors responsible for the first phase of coagulation. Aim: This informative paperwork aims to highlight the principles of oral surgical treatment of patients with haemophilia. Material and methods: The available literature was analysed to indicate the basic characteristics of haemophilia (clinical manifestation, possibilities of treatment and prophylaxis of the disease) with special reference to specificity and principles of dental oral surgical treatment of patients with haemophilia. Conclusion: The treatment of patients with haemophilia is considered one of the riskiest in everyday dental practice. Despite this, dental interventions can be successfully and safely performed. However, the dentist must be acquainted with the nature of the disease, its symptoms and the severity of the clinical picture. Furthermore, the dentist needs to know what kind of therapy the patient receives for the treatment of haemophilia, whether the patient has been diagnosed with inhibitors to the coagulation factor, and whether the patient has concomitant diseases with special reference to possible infectious diseases. Along with that, the key to a successful and safe intervention lies in a well-planned preoperative, perioperative and postoperative treatment of patients with haemophilia.

Introduction: The periodontal diseases lead to the morphological and functional disintegration of the tooth-supporting apparatus, and a basic concept of surgical periodontal therapy is the elimination of periodontal pockets with the bone remodelling and creating the physiological architecture at a more apical level, thereby achieving better conditions for dental plaque control. The progenitor cell population in the periodontal ligament is served for the reconstruction of lost epithelial attachment. Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR) is a procedure that allows for the repair of a periodontal defect by cells capable of creating new connective tissue attachment and alveolar bone, and the aim is a minimization of postoperative gingival recession. The objectives of GTR are the creation of a new epithelial attachment, an increase in the bone level, and the minimization of postoperative gingival recession. Aim: Presentation of modern approaches, materials, prognostic factors as well as complications of periodontal therapy that are focused on attachment regeneration and complete reconstruction of periodontal tissue. Conclusion: The difference in terms of outcomes of regenerative periodontal therapy relates to the degree of patient's cooperation with the therapist, the level of oral hygiene, the selection of an appropriate bone defect, as well as the methods of surgery. The high level of dental plaque control, elimination of pathogenic microflora and intensive antimicrobial periodontal therapy improve the outcome of periodontal regenerative therapy.

Introduction: Mylohyoid mandibular anesthesia is not a standard and independent primary anesthesia for performing surgery on mandibular teeth. Objective: The objective was to examine the success of achieved mylohyoid anesthesia for mandibular molar surgery, by injecting an anesthetic that could penetrate the bone in the lingual region of the mandible, using the technique for modified mylohyoid mandibular anesthesia. Materials and methods: In the pilot study, 10 patients were divided into 2 equal groups (of 5 patients each), of both sexes and aged 18-75, who required mandibular anesthesia owing to mandibular molar surgery. In group I, 3.5 ml of 4% articaine with 1:100000 adrenaline, and the addition of 0.5 ml/4 mg of dexamethasone, was injected into the sublingual region of the corner of the mandible using a modified mylohyoid approach; in group II, 4 ml of 2% lidocaine with 1:100000 adrenaline was injected into the region of the mandibular foramen using the approach for standard mandibular conduction direct anesthesia. A visual analogue scale (VAS) was used for the subjective assessment of the pain during surgery in patients, the recorded duration of the realized mandibular anesthesia, as well as the total effectiveness of the achieved anesthesia, expressed in percentages. Results: A successful intervention was achieved in all patients, with different VAS scores, but within the values indicating successful anesthesia (group I: 17.40±11.10mm; group II: 12.80±4.55mm). A longer duration of anesthesia was achieved in the first group-205.2 min (3h 25 min), compared to the second group-182 min (3h 2 min). Conclusion: Mylohyoid mandibular anesthesia with 4% articaine and with adrenaline and dexamethasone could be applied as primary anesthesia for the purpose of successfully achieving standard mandibular anesthesia.

Introduction: Carcinoma of the stratified squamous epithelium of the oral cavity - oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is an invasive pathological lesion of the epithelium with varying degrees of squamous differentiation. It is characterized by early and extensive metastases, infiltration of adjacent anatomical structures, frequent recurrences, and a relatively low five-year survival rate of less than 50%. The aim of the study to determine the correlation between the analysis of the lymphocytic infiltrate of biopsy specimens with pathohistologically proven metastases of oral squamous cellular carcinoma on postoperative neck dissection specimens. Material and methods: The study included 42 patients with pathohistologically verified oral squamous cellular carcinoma who underwent surgery at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery of the Clinic of Dental medicine in Niš in the period from 2018 to 2022. The histopathological analysis included the depth of tumor invasion, histopathological analysis of the lymph nodes of neck dissections, analysis of lymphocytic infiltration, and presence of lymphovascularand perineural invasion. Results: It was determined that the depth of invasion is statistically significantly different regarding the degree of lymphocytic infiltration (p=0.004). Invasion of over 4mm was present in 20% of patients with high infiltration, 44.4% of patients with medium infiltration, and 85.7% of patients with low infiltration. Conclusion: Given that the results of the study indicate that the analysis of the lymphocytic infiltrate can be a reliable predictive factor of the appearance of metastases in the lymph nodes of the neck, further research should be directed toward as sociating lymphocytic infiltration with certain biochemical and genetic parameters based on which a plan can be created for neck treatment in the N0 stage of oral squamous cellular carcinoma.

Introduction: Caries risk assessment is the essential step in the modern clinical approach to caries management. It is a basic prerequisite for the development of preventive measures and strategies for the primary prevention of caries. Its reliability is conditioned by the knowledge of relevant caries risk factors - indicators and predictors of caries. Aim: After reviewing the available literature, the paperwork aimed to analyse the importance of salivary levels of cationic antimicrobial peptides as indicators and predictors of caries in children, i.e., their possible role in caries risk assessment in children. Material and methods: The analysis included original articles in English which studied the association of salivary levels of cationic antimicrobial peptides with caries in children. Three databases were selected: PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, and the search was performed using the following keywords: saliva cationic peptides /antimicrobial peptides /AMP/ defensins/ cathelicidin/histatin/statherin/adrenomedullin/azurocidin AND dental caries AND children/children age. Conclusion: Cationic antimicrobial peptides could be important caries risk indicators in children. Unfortunately, there is currently no reliable evidence of their caries predictive value. Well-designed cross-sectional and long-term longitudinal studies are still required to clarify the significance of salivary cationic antimicrobial peptides as reliable caries risk indicators and caries predictors in children. At the same time, this would define their significance as caries risk biomarkers and their potential application in caries risk assessment in children.

Background and Objectives: The aim of this study was to test the impact of the gingival chemical–mechanical retraction procedure on the value of the gingival index (GI) and salivary concentrations of interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumour necrosis factor α (TNF-α). The importance of this clinical study is that it provides an exact conclusion regarding the behaviour of the gingival tissue after the application of an impregnated retraction cord in the gingival sulcus of the subjects. Materials and Methods: The research was conducted as a prospective clinical study. The study included 60 subjects divided into two experimental groups, i.e., with and without tooth preparation. Each group was divided into two subgroups according to the retraction agent used. The parameters were measured before, one day after, and three days after the retraction procedure. Results: One day after the application of both gingival retraction agents in both study groups, there was a statistically significant increase in the value of the GI and the salivary concentrations of IL-6 and TNF-α (p < 0.001) compared to the values at the beginning of the study. After 72 h, the values decreased in comparison to those from the second observation period, but they remained statistically significantly higher than the initial values of the study (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The study showed moderate inflammation of the gingival tissue one day after the retraction procedure, which decreased over time. Higher values of the studied parameters were observed with the application of the ferric sulphate-based retraction agent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Under the concept of regenerative periodontal therapy, there are two approaches: the first is the passive regeneration conceptthat includes bone substituents and guided periodontal regeneration by using of biomembranes and the second concept of active regeneration that impliesthe use of growth factors. The aim of the passive regeneration, by using of bone matrix (bone substituens) has been stabilization and bone defects management, preventing epithelial tissue growth, as well as saving space for the new tissue regeneration. This concept implies the use of autogenous transplantats, xenografts, allografts, as well as alloplastic materials. The carriers for active tissue regeneration, growth factors -GF are biological mediators that regulate cellular processes and that is crucial for the tissue regeneration. Aim:Presentation ofmodern approaches to periodontal therapy thatare focused on the attachment regeneration and complete reconstruction of periodontal tissue. Conclusion: In the future, periodontal regenerative therapy with periodontalligament progenitor cells should encourage repopulation of the areas that have been affected by periodontal disease.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to present the therapeutic procedure and the outcome of replantation of the avulsed permanent central maxillary incisor, found at the site of high contamination, after an extraoral period of 15 hours and dry transport. Case report: By clinical examination it was determined that the root reached the full length, with parallel edges, which corresponded to the age of the girl-8.5 years. After carefully removing the necrotic periodontal ligament from the root of the tooth, extraoral endodontic treatment was performed. The pulp was removed, the multi-sessional intracanal medicament fillings were avoided and the definitive obturation of the root canal was performed. The tooth was returned to the alveolar socket and immobilized with a wire-composite splint. After replantation, the condition of the tooth was monitored. Replacement resorption and dentoalveolar ankylosis occurred after nine months, and then cervical inflammatory resorption led to tooth loss after three and a half years. Conclusion: The achieved result can be considered as a success because during this time the replanted tooth met the developmental, functional and aesthetic requirements, which is especially important in the period of intensive growth and development of the child.

Introduction: Permanent tooth avulsions (traumatic extraction; total luxation) are one ofthe most severe permanent tooth injuries and can occur as single injuries or associated with other dental injuries or injuries to the face and jaws region. They are defined as the luxation of teeth from the alveoli with complete rupture of periodontal fibres, or with one part attached to the rootcementum and the other to the alveolar bone, thus compromising the dental pulp, root cementum,and alveolar bone. The high prevalence and numerous negative consequences on the stomatognathic systems they have suggest permanent tooth avulsions should be regarded as an important public health problem. The aim: is to point out the therapeutic possibilities of permanent tooth avulsion that can ensure their longer survival in the oral cavity. Conclusion: The treatment strategy for avulsed permanent teeth is always based on limiting root canal infection and periradicular inflammation, shifting the balance from unfavourable (replacement resorption) to favourable (periodontal) healing. The success of therapy and periodontal healing depend on the duration and conditions of extraoral tooth preservation, the degree of damage to the periodontal ligament, and the condition of the pulp.

Background: Imperfect smile and face profile is one of the main reasons why patients turn to orthodontists. Aim was to investigate if there is a difference in perception of smile and profile esthetics between the examined groups. Subjects and method: In conducted research, smiles of 21 persons (8 male and 13 female), 18 to 30 years old were evaluated by 15 orthodontists, 15 students of dentistry and 15 laypeople. They were to rate esthetics of every smile from 1 to 9 and choose just one main reason that impairs aesthetics. Orthodontists and laypeople should also evaluate male and female normal, bimaxillary prognathic and bimaxillary retrognathic profiles from 1 to 3. The most beautiful profile should be marked with number 3. Results: Although there was no statistically significant difference in the evaluation of smile esthetics among groups, laypeople gave the lowest evaluation. Apart from irregular position of certain teeth, all investigated groups emphasized different factors that impair smile esthetics. Orthodontists and laypeople marked bimaxillary prognathic male and female profile as less beautiful than the others. Conclusion: Because of the differences in perception of the smile aesthetics between orthodontists and laypeople, it is necessary to create a new diagnostic plan of treatment protocols that includes studies investigating laypeople perception of smile and facial esthetics.

Introduction:The elimination of odontalgia and all other forms of oral pain that occurs on dental tissues during dental interventions is still one of the main goals in the dental profession. Aim: The aim of this paper wasto perform an analysis of the literature data on the use of supplementary intrapulpal anesthesia in clinical dental practice. Material and methods: Literature data on the use of intrapulpal anesthesia, the characteristics of this technique of supplementary anesthesia as well as the results of its application were collected. Various databases were used for this purpose, digital data from Google Scholar, Medline, Science-Direct, as well as traditional libraries with manuscripts in printed form were most often taken. Conclusion: The use of supplementary intrapulpal anesthesia in dental/endodontic practice represents a practical and successful type of local anesthesia, when standard mandibular anesthesia for the lower alveolar nerve does not provide a deep enough periinterventional analgesia for dental procedures.

Introduction: The dental profession is a high-risk profession, considering the aspect of a possible 100% infection from patients who are carriers of bacterial, viral and fungal diseases during dental interventions. Aim: To perform the analysis of all data that explain the possibility of a SARS-CoV-2 virus infection in dental practice. Material and Methods: The literature data on the presence of SARS-CoV-2 virus, and its characteristics and behavior in the external environment and in living tissues was analyzed. Databases from the Medline, Cochrane Library, Science-Direct, EMBASE, and Google scholar libraries were used, as well as other sources of literature information about this virus. Results: SARS-CoV-2 is an RNA virus, which has a submicron size and the ability to survive in various environments. The retention of SARS-CoV-2 virus in air / aerosol lasts an average of 3 hours, while the half-life of this virus is 5 to 6 hours on stainless steel and 6 to 8 hours on plastic. Infected patients with SARS-CoV-2 virus develop COVID-19 disease, which manifests itself through presymptomatic, symptomatic and post-symptomatic periods of the disease. Conclusion: The SARS-CoV-2 virus can be found in aerosols generated by dental equipment, which uses compressed air for its work. Protection of dentists and staff from infection with the virus is possible by wearing an N95 respiratory mask with protection levels 2 and 3, which has a filtration efficiency, i.e. retention of submicron particles with an efficiency of ≥ 98%. Waterproof goggles with a protective visor or a special industrially designed facial visor in the form of a full face mask, which has its own motor for the supply of filtered air to the mask, and which prevents the contamination of the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose and mouth from liquid or solid aerosol in the air, need to be used. Other disposable protective equipment also must be waterproof. The control of Candida albicans biofilm formation on dentures made of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is an important challenge due to the high resistance to antifungal drugs. Interestingly, the natural compounds undecylenic acid (UDA) and farnesol (FAR) both prevent C. albicans biofilm formation and could have a synergetic effect. We therefore modified PMMA with a combination of UDA and FAR (UDA+FAR), aiming to obtain the antifungal PMMA_UDA+FAR composites. Equal concentrations of FAR and UDA were added to PMMA to reach 3%, 6%, and 9% in total of both compounds in composites. The physico-chemical properties of the composites were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and water contact angle measurement. The antifungal activity of the composites was tested on both biofilm and planktonic cells with an XTT test 0 and 6 days after the composites' preparation. The effect of the UDA+FAR combination on C. albicans filamentation was studied in agar containing 0.0125% and 0.4% UDA+FAR after 24 h and 48 h of incubation. The results showed the presence of UDA and FAR on the composite and decreases in the water contact angle and metabolic activity of both the biofilm and planktonic cells at both time points at non-toxic UDA+FAR concentrations. Thus, the modification of PMMA with a combination of UDA+FAR reduces C. albicans biofilm formation on dentures and could be a promising anti-Candida strategy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: After marsupialisation of large jaw cysts, there comes to the formation of bone defects which do not guarantee the stability of the blood clot and therefore are filled with iodine gauze. Any replacement of iodine gauze, toilet of the wound, causes minor or major bleeding, which slows wound epithelialisation and organization. Therefore, making the partial acrylic denture obturator is recommended to be done a few weeks after the surgery. Case report: This work presents two patients who had partial acrylic denture obturator made on the tenth day after the surgery. This allowed significantly easier toilet of the wounds, faster epithelialization and organization, and thus faster bone healing. Conclusion: Restored function of chewing, swallowing and speech, as well as the aesthetic appearance suggest that early use of acrylic obturator prosthesis is very significant.

Introduction: Local anesthetics are the most commonly used drugs in everyday dental and medical and increasingly in cosmetic practice. Today there are a number of local anesthetics that are divided into two groups based on their structure: ester and amide local anesthetics. Although their use in everyday work is generally safe, there is a possibility of adverse reactions that may be psychogenic, toxic, immunologic and specific adverse reactions. The aim of this work is to highlight the mechanism of occurrence and symptoms of possible adverse reactions to local anesthetics. Conclusion: If you experience systemic adverse reactions to the local anesthetic, the biggest problem in clinical practice, is a recognition of the nature of adverse reactions and providing appropriate therapy in conjunction with the resulting reaction. Speed and security to identify adverse reactions to local anesthetic can be of vital importance for the patient.

Appliances that use electromagnetic radiation in the form of high frequency radioablation are increasingly applied in many branches of medicine and in recent times in oral surgery. They work on the same principle as the electrocauteries, with the difference that the electrocauteries use wave frequencies from 300kHz to 500kHz and the radiolayers use the frequency of wavelengths of 4MHz. This allows them a far lower energy penetration depth, less destruction and limited lateral tissue damage, without burning effect. Wound healing is faster, scarring is less, and cosmetic effect is more pronounced. During one year at the Department of Oral Surgery, a radiotherapeutic appliance is used in many oral surgery interventions. Treatment of non-contact tissues simultaneously with a hemostatic effect or pure coagulation is performed very easily and successfully. The appliance is tested when working on soft tissue of the skin and mucous membranes. With proper and professional handling any adverse effects are avoided. Special attention should be paid to patients with cardiac pacemaker and adhere to the protocol. It patient has dental implants, touching them is contraindicated while working with active electrode. Conclusion: The radiowave surgery has advantages in relation to conventional surgery wiht respect on indication areas.

Corticosteroids (CS) are natural or synthetic hormones that affect nearly every aspect of human physiology. In the clinical sense, by reducing the symptoms of inflammation and immunosuppression, CS act symptomatically, decreasing problems of the underlying disease or the current state of the patient. According to application, corticosteroids are divided into topical, local and systemic way of use. Topical use of CS makes vasoconstriction, lowers mast cells degranulation, and reduces the permeability of capillaries reducing the amounts of released histamine from basophils and mast cells. The main goal of this therapy is to relieve or at least reduce pain in patients, which has an impact on overall health, nutrition, speech. Soft tissue inflammations that require the application of CS are: recurrent aphthous stomatitis, oral submucosal fibrosis, keloids and hypertrophic scars, mucocele; painful syndrome with manifestations in the head and neck: Bechet syndrome, pemfigoid syndrome, bullous pemfigoid,Oral Lichen planus, etc.; that reduces the need for taking analgetics .In oral surgery they are used for the treatment of the impacted wisdom teeth and other serious interventions which apart from analgesics (NSAIDS and narcotic analgesics) require CS in order to reduce trizmus, swelling and pain. There are numerous studies that suggest the time and route of the administration CS in lower impacted wisdom teeth surgery, as well as different combinations of CS with other medications in order to reduce morbidity this such an intervention. Local application of CS is indicated in this treatment of gigantocellular lesions and can replace the surgical procedures. Conclusion: Corticosteroids have wide application in dentistry in their indicational areas.

Introduction: as a process of determining the likelihood of developing a new carious lesion in a given person within a specific period of time and/or the likelihood of changes occurring in severity and/or activity within existing lesions. In the last decades, the emphasis has been put on personalized preventive approach that provides individual estimation of caries risk. The aim: The aim of this study was to emphasize the significance and possibilities of caries risk assessment in children. Conclusion: Further research in this field should be aimed at distinguishing unique caries risk factor or the combination of factors that would show high caries predictive importance, and to allow very early identification of an individual/population group at risk before a clinical manifestation of the disease.

Introduction: Salivary gland tumors are extremely rare neoplasms. Given their pathohistological image, these tumors represent a great diagnostic challenge. The aim of our study was to differentiate these three tumor types by applying the immunohistochemical and morphometric analysis. Material and Methods: The entire study was conducted at the Center for Pathology and Pathological Anatomy in Niš. The study included 44 tumors, 20 pleomorphic adenomas, 12 basal cells adenomas and 12 polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinomas. The expression of Ki67, p53 and HER-2 antigens, as proliferation markers, was analyzed. The differential diagnostics also included the analysis of the expression of CEA, EMA, GFAP, p63, vimentin, CK14, α-SMA, S-100 protein and WT1 antigen. The morphometric analysis was done in the program pack 'ImageJ' version 1.43u. The statistical analysis of data was done in the program pack SPSS 15.0. Results: Neoplastic cells in pleomorphic adenoma showed a strong expression of GFAP (20/20), p63 (20/20), WT1 (20/20), vimentin (18/20) and S100 (16/20). Diffuse expression of CK14 (12/12) was present in the group of 12 polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinomas. S-100, vimentin and EMA were absolutely expressed, whereas α-SMA was negative. Basal cell adenoma showed negativity to S-100, CEA, p63 and vimentin. The analysis of the proliferative Ki67 index values pointed to a statistically significant difference in the pleomorphic adenoma group, which was associated with a frequent recurrence of this benign tumor. The analysis of morphometric characteristics showed higher values in the polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma group, but statistically significant differences were found only for the Feret diameter and the integrated optical density (p < 0.05). As for the basal cell adenoma group, tumor cells showed statistically higher values for the integrated optical density (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Apart from the basic micromorphological analysis, the differential analysis of salivary gland tumors also requires the immunohistochemical analysis as well as the monitoring of morphometric characteristics of these tumors' nuclei.

Introduction: Prolonged local anesthesia is achieved by using long-acting local anesthetics, as ropivacaine and bupivacaine. In different surgical branches, longer absence of pain is noted after surgical intervention when ropivacaine is used with dexamethasone than when it is used alone. The aim of the study was to determine the effect on the duration of local anesthesia with a combination of 0.75% ropivacaine with the addition of dexamethasone during oral surgery interventions. Material and methods: A total of 12 patients participated in the study which was conducted at the Department of Oral Surgery at The Dentistry Clinic in Niš, in 2017.Surgical interventions were performed on both upper and lower jaw. Patients were divided into 2 groups: the study group of 6 patients who received 4 ml of 0.75% ropivacaine solution with addition of 1 ml/4mg dexamethasone and the control group of 6 patients who received 4 ml of 0, 75% solution of ropivacaine without the addition of dexamethasone. Statistical data was processed by the SPSS 15.0 software. The results: The onset time of first signs of anesthesia, confirmed by testing sensibility of soft tissues (lip and gingiva), was 1,5 min in the study group and 2.66 in the control group. The time necessary for the full effect of anesthesia to set in, i.e. total insensitivity of soft tissues, was 3.5 min in the study group and 4.66 min in the control group. The duration of local anesthesia was 625,5 min in the study group which is considered statistically significant (p < 0.01) and 290 min in the control group. Conclusion: Small doses of dexamethasone added to local anesthetics may reduce the need for additional anesthesia and analgesic therapy within the first 24 hours after major oral surgery interventions.

Introduction: Molar incisor hypomineralization indicates the appearance of enamel hypomineralization of systemic origin which occurs in 1-4 first permanent molars, which is often accompanied by changes on permanent incisors. Variations in clinical manifestation, together with commonly present asymmetry, are the reason for large variations in the needs for therapeutic treatment of these structural enamel defects. Case study: Two patients with diagnosed molar incisor hypomineralization are shown. The first patient, a six-year-old girl, with diagnosed mild clinical form, visited the dentist immediately after the eruption of the first permanent molars. Early diagnosis and timely application of preventive-profilactic measures, together with mild clinical form, are the reason for prevention of dental caries and further spreading of posteruptive enamel breakdown on affected first molars. Unlike the first one, the second patient, a 7,5-year-old girl had the diagnosis of moderate molar incisor hypomineralization. She developed dental caries on tooth 46 as well as complication in dental caries on tooth 36 which was extracted soon after the eruption. Conclusion: Early diagnosis and the severity of clinical appearance are the most important factors which determine therapeutic outcome of the treatment of molar incisor hypomineralization.

Background/Aim. Ropivacaine is a relatively new longacting local anesthetic. The aim of this study was to compare the postoperative analgesic effect of topical anesthetics ropivacaine 0.75% and lidocaine 2% with adrenaline in the postoperative treatment of periapical lesions in the maxilla. Methods. The study was conducted on 60 subjects, divided into two groups. The study-group received 0.75% ropivacaine without a vasoconstrictor, while the control group was treated with 2% lidocaine with adrenaline (1 : 80.000). Block anesthesia for n. infraorbitalis was used and local anesthetics were applied also on the palatine side for the end branches of n. nasopalatinus. The following parameters were observed: time elapsed from the application of an anesthetic until the first occurrence of pain after the surgery and first intake of an analgesic, the intensity of initial pain, pain intensity 6 h after the application of anesthetics and the total number of analgesics taken within 24 h after the completion of surgery. Results. The pain appeared statistically significantly earlier in the patients who had been given lidocaine with adrenaline (p < 0.001), while statistically significantly higher mean values of initial postoperative pain (p < 0.05) and pain intensity 6 h after the intervention (p < 0.01) were also registered in the same group of patients. In the period of 24 h upon the intervention, the study-group patients were taking less analgesics as compared to the control-group subjects (46.6% vs 73.3%), who were given analgesics earlier, although no statistically significant differences were observed related to the number of analgesic doses taken. Conclusion. The results of our study indicate a better postoperative analgesic effect of ropivacaine as compared to lidocaine with adrenaline.

Background/Aim. Alveolar osteitis (AO) is the extraction wound healing disorder with a presence of severe pain. Low level laser therapy stimulates cell metabolism and microcirculation, have has pronounced analgesic, antiedematous and anti-inflammatory effect and speeds up wound healing process. The aim of this study was to present results of clinical research that examined the effectiveness of low level laser in pain relief and healing of extraction wounds with alveolar osteitis in the lower jaw which was formed on the second day after tooth extraction. Methods. The study was conducted on 60 subjects divided into the study and the control group. In both groups extraction wounds were processed in similar way, except that in the study group was applied daily treatment of low level laser with a total of eight sessions of radiation, while in the control group extraction wounds were dressed with zinc oxide eugenol paste, which was changed every 48 hours up to the pain cessation. Measurement of pain intensity was done with a visual analogue scale (VAS) 10 min prior to processing of extraction wounds and daily for the next eight days. Assessment of the effectiveness of low level laser on healing of extraction wounds was performed on the day eight of the treatment. Results. On the day five after beginning of the treatment of extraction wounds with alveolar osteitis in the patients of the study group a lower average value of pain as compared to the control group was registered. This difference was increased within the following days. Extraction wounds healing in the study group was more successful and faster than in the control group. Conclusion. This study suggested that the reduction of pain was more pronounced in the patients with alveolar osteitis whose extraction wounds were subjected to low level laser radiation in comparison to those in which extraction wounds were treated with zinc oxide eugenol paste.

The researchers' aims were to evaluate the effects of chokeberry juice in the treatment of burning mouth syndrome (BMS) and oral discomfort in menopausal women. The following validated scales and questionnaires were used before and after treatment: questionnaire used for selection of research participants with xerostomia, the xerostomia inventory, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), localization of pain before and after treatment, short-form McGill pain questionnaire. There was statistically significant decrease in number of research participants who felt pain after therapeutic procedure (p < 0.05). Chokeberry juice, as additional therapy for BMS, reduced intensity of characteristic types of pain sensations and oral dryness feeling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
