1. The interplay between foreign direct investment, security and European integration by comparing Poland and Romania

Abstract

This work investigates the factors that have led to Poland and Romania's different evolutionary paths during the process of accession to the EU, placing an emphasis on security concerns, foreign direct investment and the interplay between the two. We identify two sets of determinants of the accession process, one in the political sphere and one in the economic sphere. Each set of determinants, be it in the political or economic sphere, has the potential to constitute a vicious or a virtuous circle which includes the prospect of EU membership itself. Furthermore, each of these circles is self reinforcing and can reinforce the corresponding circle in the other sphere. Finally, political and economic elements of the circles considered here can constitute security concerns for each of the countries analysed, while FDI represents a main element of the economic circle. We find that until 1996 Romania has been trapped in a combination of two vicious circles in both the political and economic spheres, while Poland has benefited from a combination of two virtuous circles since 1993. We test the hypothesis that, by changing perceptions of security and enhancing FDI, the prospect of EU membership can break the vicious economic circle of high perceptions of insecurity, low FDI, slow reforms, poor prospects for EU integration and hence high perceptions of insecurity in which Romania has been trapped. This is achieved firstly by a qualitative comparative analysis between Poland and Romania with regard to the determinants of FDI and the nature of their security concerns. Secondly, an econometric model assesses the determinants of FDI in ten transition countries candidates for EU membership and in particular the role of security and European integration variables. Our results support the hypothesis that, by creating positive perceptions of security of the candidate countries (especially of poor reformers), the prospect of EU membership may enhance FDI, thus speeding up economic reforms, leading to full membership of the Union and hence positive perceptions of security. It also appears that the prospect of EU membership can lead to a virtuous circle in the economic sphere through providing motivation for economic reforms and through financial aid and its impact on foreign direct investment and economic reforms.

Abstract

The identification of high-risk patients in the early stages of infected pancreatic necrosis (IPN) is critical, because it could help the clinicians to adopt more effective management strategies. We conducted a post hoc analysis of the MANCTRA-1 international study to assess the association between clinical risk factors and mortality among adult patients with IPN. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify prognostic factors of mortality. We identified 247 consecutive patients with IPN hospitalised between January 2019 and December 2020. History of uncontrolled arterial hypertension (p = 0.032; 95% CI 1.135–15.882; aOR 4.245), qSOFA (p = 0.005; 95% CI 1.359–5.879; aOR 2.828), renal failure (p = 0.022; 95% CI 1.138–5.442; aOR 2.489), and haemodynamic failure (p = 0.018; 95% CI 1.184–5.978; aOR 2.661), were identified as independent predictors of mortality in IPN patients. Cholangitis (p = 0.003; 95% CI 1.598–9.930; aOR 3.983), abdominal compartment syndrome (p = 0.032; 95% CI 1.090–6.967; aOR 2.735), and gastrointestinal/intra-abdominal bleeding (p = 0.009; 95% CI 1.286–5.712; aOR 2.710) were independently associated with the risk of mortality. Upfront open surgical necrosectomy was strongly associated with the risk of mortality (p < 0.001; 95% CI 1.912–7.442; aOR 3.772), whereas endoscopic drainage of pancreatic necrosis (p = 0.018; 95% CI 0.138–0.834; aOR 0.339) and enteral nutrition (p = 0.003; 95% CI 0.143–0.716; aOR 0.320) were found as protective factors. Organ failure, acute cholangitis, and upfront open surgical necrosectomy were the most significant predictors of mortality. Our study confirmed that, even in a subgroup of particularly ill patients such as those with IPN, upfront open surgery should be avoided as much as possible.

5. Comparative Study Analysis 2022: Post Covid-19 SME Internationalisation Study

Abstract

Executive Summary The main aim of this study is to provide a comparative analysis of six regional studies on the internationalisation of SMEs in the post-Covid 19 period from the first stage of the SME Internationalisation Exchange (SIE) Interreg project. This study builds on the findings produced by regional studies from Kent County in the UK, Cantabria in Spain, Lower Saxony in Germany, Nouvelle-Aquitaine in France, Ústí Region in Czech Republic and Molise in Italy. It focuses on identifying the key facilitators of SME internationalisation barriers to SME internationalisation, insights into how Covid-19 has affected firm turnover and internationalisation, support available for SME internationalisation, best practice and gaps in supporting SME internationalisation and recommendations for better support for SME internationalisation within and across the partner regions. Despite the differences in the methodological approaches from the different partners a number of findings have been put forward. Facilitators of SME internationalisation A common trend identified as a facilitator for exports across the six regions appears to be the role of new technologies and in particular digitalisation. The ability to innovate has been identified as a key facilitator. Access to specialised support and access to financial subsidies have also been identified as important facilitators. Barriers to SME Internationalisation Both Covid-19-related and general barriers exist. Bureaucracy and bureaucratic burden appears to be a key concern across several regions. Also logistical and supply chain issues, decline in purchasing/buying demand and lack of digital skills have been noted across the six studies. 6. The interplay between foreign direct investment, security and European integration by comparing Poland and Romania

Abstract

This work investigates the factors that have led to Poland and Romania's different evolutionary paths during the process of accession to the EU, placing an emphasis on security concerns, foreign direct investment and the interplay between the two. We identify two sets of determinants of the accession process, one in the political sphere and one in the economic sphere. Each set of determinants, be it in the political or economic sphere, has the potential to constitute a vicious or a virtuous circle which includes the prospect of EU membership itself. Furthermore, each of these circles is self reinforcing and can reinforce the corresponding circle in the other sphere. Finally, political and economic elements of the circles considered here can constitute security concerns for each of the countries analysed, while FDI represents a main element of the economic circle. We find that until 1996 Romania has been trapped in a combination of two vicious circles in both the political and economic spheres, while Poland has benefited from a combination of two virtuous circles since 1993. We test the hypothesis that, by changing perceptions of security and enhancing FDI, the prospect of EU membership can break the vicious economic circle of high perceptions of insecurity, low FDI, slow reforms, poor prospects for EU integration and hence high perceptions of insecurity in which Romania has been trapped. This is achieved firstly by a qualitative comparative analysis between Poland and Romania with regard to the determinants of FDI and the nature of their security concerns. Secondly, an econometric model assesses the determinants of FDI in ten transition countries candidates for EU membership and in particular the role of security and European integration variables. Our results support the hypothesis that, by creating positive perceptions of security of the candidate countries (especially of poor reformers), the prospect of EU membership may enhance FDI, thus speeding up economic reforms, leading to full membership of the Union and hence positive perceptions of security.It also appears that the prospect of EU membership can lead to a virtuous circle in the economic sphere through providing motivation for economic reforms and through financial aid and its impact on foreign direct investment and economic reforms.

9. Dunning's eclectic paradigm: A holistic, yet context specific framework for analysing the determinants of outward FDI:Evidence from international Greek investments

During the last two decades Greece has emerged as a key regional player and one of the largest investors in the Central\ud and Eastern and South-Eastern European Countries (CESEE) [Bastian, J. Southeast European and Black Sea Studies, 5(2), 171–90]. With the opening up of\ud neighbouring markets in the early 1990s the Greek firms and entrepreneurs grabbed the opportunity to exploit their\ud ownership advantages and expand abroad. Within this context, the primary aim of this study is to test the impact of\ud ownership and location advantages in determining the internalisation decisions by Greek investors participating in the\ud Athens Stock Exchange (ASE), proving that Dunning’s eclectic paradigm (OLI) is a holistic, yet context specific framework\ud of analysing foreign direct investment (FDI) determinants. To set the OLI in a specific context, we account for the different\ud sectors and countries where Greek companies have internationalised, as well as for the time period when investments have\ud been made. This paper’s second major contribution is that by looking at both ownership advantages and institutional\ud determinants it complements the previous works on institutional determinants of FDI. Our findings show that the\ud expansion of Greek firms occurs primarily in similar countries with small market size, and open economies. Rule of law and\ud high bureaucratic quality remain essential for the firm’s decision whereas the existence of high corruption act as a deterrent.\ud Finally, a significant finding is that of the existence of a learning curve in the Greek firms’ international expansion.

Abstract

A bi-directional relationship between FDI and economic reforms in ten Central European countries is tested, along with the role of the EU in breaking a potential vicious circle of insecurity, little investment, slow reforms, low prospects of EU membership and hence high insecurity. Using panel data regressions and a system of simultaneous equations, we find evidence that the prospect of EU membership has enhanced FDI in the less reformist candidates and that trade integration and increased EU financial assistance have improved FDI in the CEECs.

Abstract

Primary or incisional parietal defects are benign lesions, but their disposition to complications and recurrences always need surgical treatment. On the 2nd place, after apendicectomy and representing between 10% and 15% from a general surgery department activity, the number of these defects is increasing proportionally to the medium life expectancy, technological progress and high addressability of the specialized medical services. Laparoscopic management of the inguinal hernias goes to the same principles of the classical techniques, but the minimal invasively approach, lower costs, short hospitalization and overall recovery of the patient, lead to the extension and improvement of these laparoscopic procedures. From the simple procedures, such as the "plug and patch" technique to the now-a-days extended and complex ones the improvement of these methods has been made along three decades, and now it is unanimously accepted that the laparoscopic treatment of these defects is higher than ever. The present article, based on a review of specialized literature, aims at establishing the optimal approach, the feasibility of these procedures, the technique and last, but not least, the immediate and remote complications that may occur when the laparoscopic surgery is the treatment of choice in inguinal hernias. Abstract

Primary or incisional parietal defects are benign lesions, but their disposition to complications and recurrences always need surgical treatment. On the 2nd place, after apendicectomy and representing between 10% and 15% from a general surgery department activity, the number of these defects is increasing proportionally to the medium life expectancy, technological progress and high addressability of the specialized medical services. Abstract

Inguinal hernias represent a common pathology in the general surgery departments; the frequent complications of such pathology, as well as the temporarily reduced work capacity led imagining minimum invasive procedures, sustainable and free of any additional complications as compared to the classical techniques. Among all laparoscopic techniques, TAPP - transabdominal preperitoneal seems to be more accurate, with postoperative long distance results and with minimum complications compared both to the technique itself and to the classical techniques. TAPP stands for the classic surgery principles, accomplishes the benefits of a solid remaking of the abdominal wall and the possible complications are at least similar with the ones of the classical surgery. The procedure has the advantage of being less invasive, short hospitalization, good recovery of the patient without pains in the early postoperative period and rapid socio-professional reintegration of the patient. After a thorough analysis of the specialized literature, the present article highlights the accuracy of the TAPP technique, the complications that may occur, comparing the TAPP with the other laparoscopic and classic surgery techniques. Abstract

This work investigates the cultural consequences on international collaborative arrangements (ICAs) within the European telecommunications industry. We analyse which cultural variables influence 1CA success and which entry mode and management strategies should be utilised to increase their positive effects on the collaboration. We use Germany as investigative point of origin. Furthermore, we look at culture in Europe in general and at specific cultural variables that have been previously overlooked. We find that culture within Europe is heterogeneous with a clear North-South divide and that the success of ICAs is influenced by the management of these differences. We achieve these results through a mixture of qualitative and quantitative research methods for model building, testing and triangulation. We test the hypotheses that language and national pride are strong determinants of cultural differences within European. They influence the effectiveness of international and internal management strategies within ICAs. Our results further support the hypothesis that national and corporate cultures are important issues to be considered for ICA entry mode choice as well as management strategies. We also show that national cultural consequences vary with different departmental internal or external focus, technology content and local terminology. We further find that international employees need to show capabilities on a general as well as an international dimension. We show how to assess an ICA opportunity, choose an appropriate entry mode strategy and adapt internal management strategies on the corporate, departmental and individual level to suit the local national culture and increase future success potential. Our study allows a closer look at ICAs and the cultural consequences they face. We show that cultural differences need to be considered for company strategy, even if their relevance appears minor, as they affect an ICA's success potential. We make recommendations towards suitable management and entry mode strategies for successful ICAs. This study contributes towards the academic literature, business knowledge and practices as well as policy making.

Abstract

The researches performed during the last four decades did not elucidate completely the pathogenic mechanism of the renovascular hypertension. The present knowledge considers that the origins of renovascular hypertension are the imbalance between the renal hypotensive system located in the medullar renal site (antihypertensive and hypotensive substances) and the renal hypertensive system (renin-angiotensin-aldosterone) located cortically. As an additional mechanism in producing hypertension is involved the disorder of hydro electrolytic metabolism, as a result of decreased excretory function, inducing an increase of plasmatic natrium level, of volemia and interstitial liquid.

Abstract

Objectives: symptoms in renovascular hypertension can be wrong interpreted, which leads to a late diagnostic, after discover the determination disease., Materials and Methods: the study on the renovascular hypertension was made on 20 patients, aged between 2 and 36 years old, diagnosed with reno-ureteral malformations, pyelonephritis, reno-ureteral reflux and renal trauma as a determination disease, leads to manifestation types that guide the diagnostic: neuro-psychiatric signs, weight loss, renal signs and digestive signs. Beginning from these signs the arterial hypertension was diagnosed and the investigations determined the causes., Results: Periodic postoperative evaluation at 3 months, during a period between 4 months and 7 years, individualised 4 evolutional clinical types: AHT with lumbar pain, AHT with no clinical signs, AHT with ophthalmologic signs and AHT with encephalitis like signs., Conclusions: symptoms in renovascular hypertension don't have pathognomonic clues and the identified signs, one type or all together, enforce the evaluation or even the monitoring of the arterial tension at least 30 days. If the values exceed the normal, complex investigations will be made in order to determine the specific cause of the AHT.
