Wind turbine aerodynamics remains to be a central field in the development of wind turbines. It comprises several aspects, and methods to be understood really make the best use of it in today’s wind turbine and wind farm development. This chapter gives an overview of all aspects in wind energy aerodynamics covered within this book and the reasons why these aspects are covered. This way it already gives an overview for developers on all the issues wind turbine might face, when dealing with topics related to wind turbine aerodynamics.

Traditional methods for micro-siting of wind farms usually assume that each turbine is controlled to obtain its individual maximum power generation. However, it is now common practice to implement farm level control actions during the daily operations in order to improve the economic profit of an entire wind plant. This study is then proposed to investigate the wind farm layout optimization to achieve the minimum cost per unit of energy (CoE), when the farm level control operations, the coordination of turbine cooperations (CTC), is considered preliminary farm planning stage. It is found that, by optimizing the turbine number and layout with CTC involved, the efficiency of a wind farm can be further improved. A single-objective optimization problem is firstly established by modelling all aforementioned factors of interest. Subsequently, a hybrid optimization algorithm is proposed, with a greedy algorithm to optimize the turbine number and a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to refine the turbine layout scheme. Eventually, extensive simulation studies with various scenarios are provided to substantiate the feasibility of the proposed scheme.

To date, the micro-scale wind resource assessment for complex terrain has always been a challenging mission, due to the flow field complexity caused by the local topography. In this paper, a novel method, combining on-site measurement from multiple masts and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, is proposed for complex terrain site assessment. It is designed to accomplish the spatial variability reproduction of wind energy distribution, as well as the dynamic wind velocity estimation of any desired positions within the concerned region. CFD simulations are carried out to provide detailed wind fields, which implicitly carry the correlations of physical properties with the concerned space. The on-site measurement data from multiple masts are integrated into the assessment process, to provide dynamical corrections based on the reference solutions obtained from the CFD simulations. A high-resolutional wind resource distribution and accurate wind velocity estimations are achieved. A detailed case study on micro-scale wind resource assessment for a wind farm with complex terrain, located in China is presented for validation.

This review article aims to provide an overview and insight into the most relevant aspects of wind energy development and current state-of-the-art. The industry is in a very mature stage, so it seems to be the right time to take stock of the relevant areas of wind energy use for power generation. For this review, the authors considered the essential aspects of the development of wind energy technology: research, modeling, and prediction of wind speed as an energy source, the technology development of the plants divided into the mechanical and electrical systems and the plant control, and finally the optimal plant operation including the maintenance strategies. The focus is on the development in Europe, with a partial focus on Germany. The authors are employees of the Fraunhofer Institutes, Institute for Energy Economics and Energy Systems Technology and Institute for Wind Energy Systems, who have contributed to the development of this technology for decades.

Since the investigation of van Ingen et al., attempts were undertaken to search for laminar parts within the boundary layer of wind turbines operating in the lower atmosphere with much higher turbulence levels than seen in wind tunnels or at higher altitudes where airplanes usually fly. Based on the results of the DAN-Aero experiment and the Aerodynamic Glove project, a special work package Boundary Layer Transition was embedded in IAEwind Task 29 MexNext 3rd phase (MN3). Here, we report on the results of the application of various CFD tools to predict transition on the MEXICO blade. In addition, recent results from a comparison of thermographic pictures (aimed at detecting transition) with 3D transitional CFD are included as well. The MEXICO (2006) and NEW MEXICO (2014) wind tunnel experiments on a turbine equipped with three 2.5 m blades have been described extensively in the literature. In addition, during MN3, high-frequency Kulite data from experiments were used to detect traces of transitional effects. Complementary, the following set of codes were applied to cases 1.1 and 1.2 (axial inflow with 10 m/s and 15 m/s respectively) – elsA, CFX, OpenFOAM (with 2 different turbulence/transitional models), Ellipsys, (with 2 different turbulence models and eN transition prediction tool), FLOWer and TAU – to search for detection of laminar parts by means of simulation. Obviously, the flow around a rotating blade is much more complicated than around a simple 2D section. Therefore, results for even integrated quantities like thrust and torque are varying strongly. Nevertheless, visible differences between fully turbulent and transitional set-ups are present. We discuss our findings, especially with respect to turbulence and transition models used.

This paper presents final results from the EU project AVATAR in which aerodynamic models are improved and validated for wind turbines on a scale of 10 MW and more. Special attention is paid to the improvement of low fidelity engineering (BEM based) models with higher fidelity (CFD) models but also with intermediate fidelity free vortex wake (FVW) models. The latter methods were found to be a good basis for improvement of induction modelling in engineering methods amongst others for the prediction of yawed cases, which in AVATAR was found to be one of the most challenging subjects to model. FVW methods also helped to improve the prediction of tip losses. Aero-elastic calculations with BEM based and FVW based models showed that fatigue loads for normal production cases were over predicted with approximately 15% or even more. It should then be realised that the outcome of BEM based models does not only depend on the choice of engineering add-ons (as is often assumed) but it is also heavily dependent on the way the induced velocities are solved. To this end an annulus and element approach are discussed which are assessed with the aid of FVW methods. For the prediction of fatigue loads the so-called element approach is recommended but the derived yaw models rely on an annulus approach which pleads for a generalised solution method for the induced velocities.

Optimization algorithms are used in various engineering applications to identify optimal shapes. In this work, we benchmark several unconstrained optimization algorithms (Nelder–Mead, Quasi-Newton, steepest descent) under variation of gradient estimation schemes (adjoint equations, finite differences). Flow fields are computed by solving the Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes equations using the open source computational fluid dynamics code OpenFOAM. Design variables vary from $ N=2 $ to $ N=364 $. The efficiency of the optimization algorithms are benchmarked in terms of: (a) computation time, and (b) applicability and ease of use. Results for lift optimizations are presented for airfoils at a Reynolds number of $ \text{ Re}=50,000 $. As a result, we find for a small number of design variables $ N \approx 5 $ or less, the computational efficiency of all optimization algorithms to be similar, while the ease of use of the Nelder–Mead algorithm makes it a perfect choice for a low number of design variables. For intermediate and large number of design variables, gradient-based algorithms with gradient estimation through the solution of adjoint equations are unbeaten.

Rotational effects are known to influence severely the aerodynamic performance of the inboard region of rotor blades. The underlying physical mechanisms are however far from being well understood. The present work addresses this problem using Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes computations and experimental results of the MEXICO (Model Experiments in Controlled Conditions) rotor. Four axisymmetric inflow cases with wind speeds ranging from pre-stall to post-stall conditions are computed and compared with pressure and particle image velocimetry (PIV) experimental data, obtaining, in general, consistent results. At low angles of attack, the aerodynamic behavior of all of the studied blade sections resembles the one from the corresponding 2D airfoils. However, at high angles of attack, rotational effects lead to stall delay and/or lift enhancement at inboard positions. Such effects are shown to occur only in the presence of significant radial flows. Interestingly, the way in which rotational effects influence the aerodynamics of the MEXICO blades differs qualitatively in certain aspects from the descriptions found in the literature about this topic. The presented results provide new insights that are useful for the development of advanced and physically-sound correction models.

This report describes the work performed within the first phase of IEA Task 29 Mexnext. In this IEA Task 29 a total of 20 organisations from 11 different countries collaborated in analysing the measurements which have been taken in the EU project ‘Mexico’. Within this Mexico project 9 European institutes carried out a wind tunnel experiment in the Large Low Speed Facility (LLF) of the German DutchWind Facilities DNW on a rotor with a diameter of 4.5 m. Pressure distributions were measured at five location along the blade along with detailed flow field measurements around the rotor plane using stereo PIV.
