Abstract

Most businesses and industries are undergoing significant disruption due to digital innovation. We focus our discussion on the rise of data-driven business models in the professional services industry. Big data, advanced analytics and artificial intelligence solutions are now diffusing across industries. Professional services firms are knowledge-intensive which may raise specific issues in relation to data analytics and artificial intelligence. In addition, these firms currently face high levels of potential disruption due to digital innovation by new start-ups. When trying to understand the impact of these developments on the professional services industry, two prominent issues need to be considered. Firstly, digital innovation often results in the creation of new business models. This raises questions about whether these models are more generic (digital), showing great similarities across industries, or specific to the professional services industry. Moreover, there are questions related to whether the initiators of business model innovation are new, digital start-ups, or well-established incumbents. Secondly, when an incumbent is required to transform due to digital disruption, we need a more nuanced understanding of the strategic transformation processes in relation to the nature of professional services and technology innovation. Our paper makes two major contributions to the literature. First, it takes a critical look at data-driven business models in the context of professional services firms. Second, it puts forth several research propositions that warrant further critical examination when it comes digital disruption barriers and enablers faced by incumbents and start-ups.

8. Customer value perception toward use of mobile banking applications

Abstract

Mobile banking (m-banking) is one of the most widely used applications and innovative banking services in the past decade. However, the adoption rate of m-banking in developing countries is low and still has potential for growth. We explored factors and value perceptions of clients toward the use of m-banking applications. A conceptual model is presented using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Uses and Gratification Theory (UGT). The tested variables are Perceived Usefulness, Perceived Ease of Use, Social Integrative, Personal Integrative and Hedonic Benefits. 278 valid survey responses were collected from Iranian and Turkish clients. Multiple regression analysis indicated that Perceived Usefulness and Social Integrative Benefit are the key drivers in both Iran and Turkey, but Hedonic Benefit is only significant in Iran. The results contribute to literature by integrating UGT and TAM and to participate as it enables banks to better design services and to improve customer experience.

10. Effect of Nutritional Status on Concentrations of Insulin-Like Growth Factor-I In Milk From Holstein Cows

Abstract

The effect of diet on concentrations of milk insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), and their relationships with plasma IGF-I, and with somatic cell count (SCC) were evaluated in two trials. In Trial 1, 32 multi-parous Holstein cows at 4 to 5 wk of lactation received 4 different diets formulated to provide high (H) or low (L) dry matter intake (DMI) with H or L metabolisable energy (ME) density for 5 wk. Dietary treatment did not affect milk IGF-I concentrations, but concentrations were repeatable in individual cows. The intraclass correlation coefficients were 0.78 ± 0.05 and 0.73 ± 0.06 in a.m. and p.m. samples, respectively, when concentrations were measured for 7 consecutive days. The association between milk IGF-I and plasma IGF-I concentration was weaker (R2 = 0.140; P = 0.035) than the association between milk IGF-I concentrations and the natural logarithmic value (Ln) of SCC (R2 = 0.249; P = 0.004). The effects of body condition score (BCS) at calving and level of grain supplementation in early lactation on IGF-I concentrations in milk were evaluated in Trial 2 with 21 Holstein cows that grazed pasture. The BCS at calving did not affect milk IGF-I concentrations; neither did supplementation with 1 or 6 kg of grain. Milk and plasma concentrations of IGF-I were not associated (R2 = 0.002; P = 0.830), whereas the association between milk concentrations of IGF-I and Ln SCC was significant (R2= 0.342; P=0.005). Concentrations of IGF-I in milk were not a sensitive measure of dietary changes in lactating pasture-fed Holstein cows.

The issues of constraints, evaluation, and actual realization of benefits from investments in B2B website have generated a lot of attention in the information systems management literature among researchers and practitioners in recent years. This research builds on a survey that assessed the websites of small businesses in Australia from an owner’s perspective to determine the benefits of the websites from the owners’ perspective. The objective of this paper is to examine the relationships between B2B website adoption constraints, IT investment evaluation, and B2B website benefits. A key contribution of the paper is that B2B website adoption constraints is negatively related to the level of IT investment evaluation which in turn has a positive impact on the realization of B2B website benefits.

Abstract

Research on the mechanisms for conducting business with suppliers has traditionally centred on the nature of arm’s length and embedded relational models. While such models provide a basis for understanding market and closely integrated approaches to supply chain management it has been recognised that a variety of hybrid models occur in practice. This paper identifies and examines a hybrid model of buyer–supplier relationships that forms part of a portfolio of relationships managed by a large Australian organisation. The hybrid model takes a local community perspective within a market based mechanism. The characteristics of the hybrid model are underpinned by the motivation to maintain goodwill in the supplier community and employ a global competitive electronic marketplace for procurement. Strategies to manage local suppliers and consideration of their role and standing in the local community are important factors that large organisations need to incorporate in hybrid procurement arrangements.

This research analyses the effectiveness of SME business to business websites from a user perspective. An established evaluation instrument (eQual) is used to assess 80 websites in terms of usability, information quality, and interaction and service. The analysis shows that although a significant number of sites reflect little understanding of the attributes of good design or potential benefits to be gained from websites, there are examples of competent and effective website use.

Abstract

The possible contribution of Compton scattering to the formation of gamma-ray burst spectra is analyzed. Monte Carlo calculations are used to study the spectral distribution emerging from a plasma at temperatures typical of gamma-ray burst spectra (above 100 keV) with an underlying source of photons reprocessed by inverse Compton scattering surrounding a point source of blackbody radiation. Comparison of the computations with the observed spectrum of the burst GB781104 results in a best fit with a blackbody X-ray source at 2.4 keV, plasma temperature of about 150 eV and plasma column density of 4 x 10 to the 24th electrons/sq cm. The Comptonization model is also shown to be capable of accounting for the two-component spectra observed for bursts GB790329 and GB790524, and the moving low-energy spectral cut-off in the burst of November 18, 1978.

Abstract

It is pointed out that most gamma-ray bursts have spectra that are fit by an optically thin thermal bremsstrahlung shape. The small emitting volume implied by the observation of spectral features identified as cyclotron absorption lines from a 10 to the 12th Gauss field is shown to prevent thermal bremsstrahlung from providing sufficient luminosities to account for the observed fluxes unless the optical depth to Compton scattering is large. It is also demonstrated that complicated detector response functions can introduce artifacts that mimic absorption features below 60 keV unless the absolute gain of the detector is established and correctly applied in analysis. Comparing the continuum as observed by the Berkeley/Los Alamos ISEE-3 gamma-ray detector with the continuum observed by the Konus (Mazets et al. 1981) experiments, a lack of agreement is found, suggesting that the gain of one of these experiments may be incorrect.

Abstract

Ageing populations and unhealthy lifestyles have led to some chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease reaching epidemic proportions in many developed nations. This paper explores the potential of mobile technologies to improve this situation. The pervasive nature of these technologies can contribute holistically across the whole spectrum of chronic care ranging from public information access and awareness, through monitoring and treatment of chronic disease, to support for patient carers. A related study to determine the perceptions of healthcare providers to m-health confirmed the view that attitudes were likely to be more important barriers to progress than technology. Here Z[sub eff] profiles have been obtained across the entire minor radius of the DIII-D [Fusion Technol. 8, 441 (1985); Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research, 1986 (IAEA, Vienna, 1987), Vol. 1, p. 159] tokamak from measurements of visible bremsstrahlung continuum radiation. The Z[sub eff] profiles are presented for Ohmic divertor and limiter plasmas as well as for neutral beam heated H-mode and L-mode plasmas. The measured Z[sub eff] profiles are found to have small gradients over the entire plasma cross section. This implies that resistivity gradient driven electrostatic modes are unlikely to influence the confinement properties in the edge region of these discharges. The H-mode plasma has a centrally peaked Z[sub eff] profile and a relatively fiat electron density profile that suggests the existence of a negative value for the parameter η[sub i]. Abstract

Neutral-beam-heated expanded-boundary (XB) divertor discharges have been obtained in Doublet III with high heating efficiency for wide ranges of plasma parameters (Ip: 300-800 kA; BT: 8-24kG; e:(2-10) × 1013cm?3; Pb< 4.5 MW, ?p? 1.6, ?t? 2.8%). The improved heating efficiency is well correlated with a configurational change from limiter discharges to XB discharges. The beam-heated, fully diverted expanded-boundary discharges with a limiter/separatrix distance greater than 1.5 cm exhibit an improvement of up to a factor of two in energy confinement time. The ?Eincreases approximately linearly with Ip, but is insensitive to variations of a factor of two in eand BT. Over the inner two-thirds of the plasma radius (r/a ? 0.7), the shape of the Teprofile for XB discharges is similar to that for limiter discharges. Hence, the improvement of the global energy confinement is consistent with a reduction of thermal conductivity over most of the plasma radius. With 2 MW of neutral-beam injection into a high-current (Ip= 750 kA) XB discharge, energy confinement times ?E? 115 ms and e?E? 1 × 1013cm?3· s?1have been obtained. At high beam power (Pb> 3 MW), a mild deterioration of the energy confinement time has been observed.

47. Results of pellet fuelled discharges on the Doublet III tokamak

Abstract

Results are presented for multiple deuterium pellet injection into both the Ohmic phase and the beam heated phase of Doublet III discharges. Pellet injection experiments were carried out using an injector, built at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which has the capability of firing up to 40 hydrogen or deuterium pellets per second at a speed of 800 m·s?1. For the deuterium pellets used in this experiment, one pellet raises the line average density to 1.3 × 1013cm?3. In the Ohmic phase, the pellets penetrate deep into the plasma, but with 2.2 MW of neutral beam heating they penetrate only half as deep. This difference is mostly due to the increased ablation in the outer 25% of the plasma during beam heating. Ablation calculations using the neutral shielding model agree well with experimental results during Ohmic heating, but they predict a shallower pellet penetration than is actually observed during neutral beam heating. About 90-100% of the pellet mass can be accounted for after injection. Electron temperature profile relaxation accompanies pellet injection, but on a time-scale that is shorter than the pellet lifetime. A transient increase in the energy confinement time ?Eis possible, provided pellet penetration is sufficient to sustain a peaked density profile. In discharges with one or more multifractured pellets, which ablate rapidly at the plasma edge and thus broaden the density profile, no increase in ?Eis seen. These results indicate that continuous ?Eimprovement may be possible if a peaked density profile can be maintained by sustained deep pellet penetration.

Abstract

The multipoint Thomson scattering diagnostic for DIII-D has been in operation since early 1987. Its capability of measuring electron temperatures as low as 50 eV at densities of a few times 10[sup 12] cm[sup -3] and a spatial resolution of 1.4 cm in the plasma edge region has been essential in the study of H-mode plasmas. The major components of the diagnostic system consist of a 10-J ruby laser, many stages of funnel-shaped beam baffles, stacks of razor blades for viewing and stray light dumps, two wide-angle lenses for the collection of scattered light through reentrant window ports with protection shutters, 88 fiber bundles 15 m in length for light transmission to an f/1.9 spectrometer, an intensified CCD camera system capable of single-photon detection, and a VAX computer for hardware control and data processing. The input end of the fiber bundle is made demountable so the view locations can be reconfigured to optimize the spatial resolution for the plasma region of interest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
