In particular, the potential of EPCs to differentiate into mature endothelial cells remains of high interest for clinical applications such as bio-functionalized patches for autologous seeding after implantation. The objective of this study was to determine EPCs’ kinetics in patients undergoing carotid artery thromboendarterectomy (CTEA) and patch angioplasty. Methods: Twenty CTEA patients were included (15 male, mean age 76 years). PB samples were taken at 1 day preoperatively, and at 1, 3, and 5 days postoperatively. Flow cytometric analysis was performed for CD34, CD133, KDR, and CD45. Expression of KDR, SDF-1α, and G-CSF was analyzed by means of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: Fluorescence-activated cell sorting analysis revealed 0.031%±0.016% (% of PB mononuclear cells) KDR+ cells and 0.052%±0.022% CD45-/CD34+/CD133+ cells, preoperatively. A 33% decrease of CD45–/CD34+/CD133+ cells was observed at day 1 after surgery. However, a relative number (compared to initial preoperative values) of CD45-/CD34+/CD133+ cells was found on day 3 (82%) and on day 5 (94%) postoperatively. More profound upregulated levels of CD45–CD34+/CD133+ cells were observed for diabetic (+47% compared to nondiabetic) and male (+38% compared to female) patients. No significant postoperative time-dependent differences were found in numbers of KDR+ cells and the concentrations of the cytokines KDR and G-CSF. However, the SDF-1α levels decreased significantly on day 1 postoperatively but returned to preoperative levels by day 3. Conclusion: CTEA results in short-term downregulation of circulating EPCs and SDF-1α levels. Coronary heart disease is characterized by atherosclerosis, which typically results in coronary stenosis and myocardial ischemia. Myocardial ischemia can appear as chronic ischemia without symptoms or acute ischemia with diverse symptoms. Variable studies have shown that adipokines, produced by adipose tissue, are involved in inflammatory processes. It has been shown that adipokines influence the development and progress of coronary heart diseases.We investigate the expression of Leptin, Adiponectin and its receptors AdipoR-1 and AdipoR-2 in epicardial adipose tissue (EAT), mediastinal adipose tissue (MAT) and peripheral adipose tissue (PAT) of patients with coronary artery disease with different ischemic states.EAT, MAT and PAT samples of patients undergoing cardiac surgery with chronic (CI; n=5), acute (AI; n=5) and non-ischemia (NI; n=5) were compared. Levels of Leptin, Adiponectin, AdipoR-1 and AdipoR-2 were determined by RT-PCR. Comparisons of the three groups were evaluated by one-way ANOVA. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant.Comparing Adiponectin expression in PAT, MAT and EAT samples, a significant gradually increase from NI to CI in expression levels was detected in the PAT and MAT groups. Adiponectin levels significantly decreased gradually from PAT to EAT in CI patients. AdipoR-1 showed the reverse expression levels. Leptin expression levels were opposed detected to Adiponectin levels when comparing PAT, MAT and EAT within the NI, AI and CI groups.Our results show a correlation between Adipokine, AdipoR-1 and Leptin expression in coronary artery disease with different stages of ischemia. Leptin, known to evoke pro-inflammatory effects, is up-regulated in CI tissue and EAT. On the other hand, Adiponectin, which is acting in a more anti-inflammatory way, is less found in AI tissue compared to CI tissue samples. Thus we suggest a regulatory relationship between Leptin and Adiponectin in ischemic inflammatory processes. Human Relaxin-2 is best known for its physiological role during pregnancy in the growth and differentiation of the reproductive tract as well as in the renal and systemic hemodynamic changes. This factor can also be involved in the pathophysiology of arterial hypertension and heart failure. Within the last years, Relaxin-2 is already being considered as a promising drug, especially in acute heart failure. RLX030, a recombinant form of Relaxin-2 has shown promising results in the therapy of acute heart failure. However, the role of Relaxin-2 in chronic heart failure has not been detailed investigated yet.We examined the systemic and local expression of Relaxin-2 in patients suffering from chronic heart failure (CHF) undergoing heart transplantation or LVAD implantation (CHF; n=7). Myocardial tissue samples and blood samples of the patients were collected after ethic approval and analyzed via immunohistochemical staining and ELISA analysis, respectively. Homografts and blood samples from by-pass surgery patients with EF>65% served as control group (Control; n=5). Data are expressed as mean±SEM. The statistical differences were determined by unpaired Student t-test and One-Way Anova, as appropriate, using GraphPad Prism 6 software. p<0.05 was considered as statistically significant.The immunohistochemical staining for Relaxin-2 showed a significant higher protein expression in the CHF group compared to the controls (Control 26.49±1.37% vs. CHF 31.35±0.61%; p<0.05). The evaluation of the circulating levels of Relaxin-2 did not show significant differences. However, a trend in elevated Relaxin-2 levels in the CHF group compared to controls was observed (Control 15.32±0.11pg/ml vs. CHF 19.41±3.78pg/ml).Relaxin-2 has been successfully evaluated as a new drug for the treatment of patients with acute heart failure. Our data provide evidence about the promising role of Relaxin-2 in CHF. We have found an up-regulated tissue expression of this protein. Objectives: In addition to excess mortality due to COVID-19, the pandemic has been characterised by excess mortality due to non-COVID diagnoses and consistent reports of patients delaying seeking medical treatment. This study seeks to compare the outcomes of cardiac surgery during and before the COVID-19 pandemic., Design: Our institutional database was interrogated retrospectively to identify all patients undergoing one of three index procedures during the first six months of the pandemic and the corresponding epochs of the previous five years., Setting: A regional cardiothoracic centre., Participants: All patients undergoing surgery during weeks #13-37, 2015-2020., Main Outcome Measures: Propensity score weighted analysis was employed to compare the incidence of major complications (stroke, renal failure, re-ventilation), 30-day mortality, six month survival and length of hospital stay between the two groups., Results: There was no difference in 30-day mortality (HR = 0.76 [95% CI 0.27-2.20], p  = 0.6211), 6-month survival (HR = 0.94 [95% CI 0.44-2.01], p  = 0.8809) and duration of stay (SHR = 1.00 (95% CI 0.90-1.12), p  = 0.959) between the two eras. There were no differences in the incidence of major complications (weighted chi-square test: renal failure: p  = 0.923, stroke: p  = 0.991, new respiratory failure: p  = 0.856)., Conclusions: Cardiac surgery is as safe now as in the previous five years. Concerns over the transmission of COVID-19 in hospital are understandable but patients should be encouraged not to delay seeking medical attention. All involved in healthcare and the wider public should be reassured by these findings.

Postinfarction ventricular septal defect (VSD) is an uncommon but almost lethal complication. The optimal timing for VSD repair is matter of debate, and mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices allow to hemodynamically support the patient and postpone the VSD closure until myocardial tissue is less friable and the patient's condition is less compromised. However, data are lacking to guide the choice of the best types of MCS in case of VSD. We present a case of a large postinfarction VSD and the use of central venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support to stabilize the patient until the VSD surgical repair. Appropriate mechanical properties and fast endothelialization of synthetic grafts are key to ensure long-term functionality of implants. We used a newly developed biostable polyurethane elastomer (TPCU) to engineer electrospun vascular scaffolds with promising mechanical properties (E-modulus: 4.8 ± 0.6 MPa, burst pressure: 3326 ± 78 mmHg), which were biofunctionalized with fibronectin (FN) and decorin (DCN). Neither uncoated nor biofunctionalized TPCU scaffolds induced major adverse immune responses except for minor signs of polymorph nuclear cell activation. The in vivo endothelial progenitor cell homing potential of the biofunctionalized scaffolds was simulated in vitro by attracting endothelial colony-forming cells (ECFCs). Although DCN coating did attract ECFCs in combination with FN (FN + DCN), DCN-coated TPCU scaffolds showed a cell-repellent effect in the absence of FN. In a tissue-engineering approach, the electrospun and biofunctionalized tubular grafts were cultured with primary-isolated vascular endothelial cells in a custom-made bioreactor under dynamic conditions with the aim to engineer an advanced therapy medicinal product. Both FN and FN + DCN functionalization supported the formation of a confluent and functional endothelial layer.

Objectives: Frozen cryopreservation (FC) with the vapour phase of liquid nitrogen storage (-135°C) is a standard biobank technique to preserve allogeneic heart valves to enable a preferable allograft valve replacement in clinical settings. However, their long-term function is limited by immune responses, inflammation and structural degeneration. Ice-free cryopreserved (IFC) valves with warmer storage possibilities at -80°C showed better matrix preservation and decreased immunological response in preliminary short-term in vivo studies. Our study aimed to assess the prolonged performance of IFC allografts in an orthotopic pulmonary sheep model., Methods: FC (n = 6) and IFC (n = 6) allografts were transplanted into juvenile Merino sheep. After 12 months of implantation, functionality testing via 2-dimensional echocardiography and histological analyses was performed. In addition, multiphoton autofluorescence imaging and Raman microspectroscopy analysis were applied to qualitatively and quantitatively assess the matrix integrity of the leaflets., Results: Six animals from the FC group and 5 animals from the IFC group were included in the analysis. Histological explant analysis showed early inflammation in the FC valves, whereas sustainable, fully functional, devitalized acellular IFC grafts were obtained. IFC valves showed excellent haemodynamic data with fewer gradients, no pulmonary regurgitation, no calcification and acellularity. Structural remodelling of the leaflet matrix structure was only detected in FC-treated tissue, whereas IFC valves maintained matrix integrity comparable to that of native controls. The collagen crimp period and amplitude and elastin structure were significantly different in the FC valve cusps compared to IFC and native cusps. Collagen fibres in the FC valves were less aligned and straightened., Conclusions: IFC heart valves with good haemodynamic function, reduced immunogenicity and preserved matrix structures have the potential to overcome the known limitations of the clinically applied FC valve., (© The Author(s) 2018. Cryomedium toxicity is a major safety concern when transplanting cryopreserved organs. Therefore, thorough removal of potentially toxic cryoprotective agents (CPAs) is required before transplantation. CPAs such as dimethyl-sulfoxide (DMSO), propylene glycol (PG), and formamide (FMD), routinely employed in ice-free cryopreservation (IFC), have advantages in long-term preservation of tissue structures compared with conventional cryopreservation employing lower CPA concentrations. This study evaluated the impact of potential residual CPAs on human cardiac valves. Raman microspectroscopy and Raman imaging were established as nondestructive marker-independent techniques for in situ quantitative assessment of CPA residues in IFC valve tissues. In detail, IFC valve leaflets and supernatants of the washing solutions were analyzed to determine the washing efficiency. A calibration model was developed according to the CPA's characteristic Raman signals to quantify DMSO, PG and FMD concentrations in the supernatants. Single point Raman measurements were performed on the intact tissues to analyze penetration properties. In addition, Raman imaging was utilized to visualize potential CPA residues. Our data showed that washing decreased the CPA concentration in the final washing solution by 99%, and no residues could be detected in the washed tissues, validating the multistep CPA removal protocol routinely used for IFC valves. Raman analysis of unwashed tissues showed different permeation characteristics depending on each CPA and their concentration. Our results demonstrate a great potential of Raman microspectroscopy and Raman imaging as marker-independent in situ tissue quality control tools with the ability to assess the presence and concentration of different chemical agents or drugs in preimplantation tissues.

Endovascular repair of aortic aneurysms (EVAR) has become an established treatment option currently applied in an increasing numbers of patients with aortic aneurysms. Advantages include reduced surgical trauma, procedural time, intensive care unit and hospital lengths of stay, blood loss as well as morbidity and mortality.The optimal imaging modalities in EVAR follow-up as well as the appropriate intervals between these follow-ups remain subject of controversial discussion. Objective of this study was the evaluation of the realistic radiation exposure and risk estimate postop EVAR treatment.Of the follow-ups required according to the surveillance schedule during the first year post-EVAR, only 68.3% were actually implemented. Of those required from the second year onwards, an average of 70% was actually performed. During the observation period, each patient underwent a mean of 4.3 CTAs. The median ED calculated from all CTAs was 24. 5 mSv. The minimum and maximum cumulative EDs for the entire observation period were 55 mSv and 310 mSv, respectively.

Objectives: Allogeneic frozen cryopreserved heart valves (allografts or homografts) are commonly used in clinical practice. A major obstacle for their application is the limited availability in particular for paediatrics. Allogeneic large animal studies revealed that alternative ice-free cryopreservation (IFC) results in better matrix preservation and reduced immunogenicity. The objective of this study was to evaluate xenogeneic (porcine) compared with allogeneic (ovine) IFC heart valves in a large animal study., Methods: IFC xenografts and allografts were transplanted in 12 juvenile merino sheep for 1-12 weeks. Immunohistochemistry, ex vivo computed tomography scans and transforming growth factor-β release profiles were analysed to evaluate postimplantation immunopathology. In addition, near-infrared multiphoton imaging and Raman spectroscopy were employed to evaluate matrix integrity of the leaflets., Results: Acellular leaflets were observed in both groups 1 week after implantation. Allogeneic leaflets remained acellular throughout the entire study. In contrast, xenogeneic valves were infiltrated with abundant T-cells and severely thickened over time. No collagen or elastin changes could be detected in either group using multiphoton imaging. Raman spectroscopy with principal component analysis focusing on matrix-specific peaks confirmed no significant differences for explanted allografts. However, xenografts demonstrated clear matrix changes, enabling detection of distinct inflammatory-driven changes but without variations in the level of transforming growth factor-β., Conclusions: Despite short-term success, mid-term failure of xenogeneic IFC grafts due to a T-cell-mediated extracellular matrix-triggered immune response was shown.

It has been shown previously that cryopreservation, using an ice-free cryopreservation method with the cryoprotectant formulation VS83, beneficially modulated immune reactions in vivo and in vitro when compared with conventionally frozen tissues. In this study, we assessed the impact of a VS83 post-treatment of previously conventionally frozen human tissue on responses of human immune cells in vitro. Tissue punches of treated and non-treated (control) aortic heart valve tissue (leaflets and associated aortic root) were co-cultured for 7 days with peripheral blood mononuclear cells or enriched CD14 + monocytes. Effects on cellular activation markers, cytokine secretion and immune cell proliferation were analysed by flow cytometry. Flow cytometry studies showed that VS83 treatment of aortic root tissue promoted activation and differentiation of CD14 + monocytes, inducing both up-regulation of CD16 and down-regulation of CD14. Significantly enhanced expression levels for the C-C chemokine receptor (CCR)7 and the human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DR on monocytes co-cultured with VS83-treated aortic root tissue were measured, while the interleukin (IL)-6 and monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1 release was suppressed. However, the levels of interferon (IFN)γ and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)α remained undetectable, indicating that complete activation into pro-inflammatory macrophages did not occur. Similar, but non-significant, changes occurred with VS83-treated leaflets. Additionally, in co-cultures with T cells, proliferation and cytokine secretion responses were minimal. In conclusion, post-treatment of conventionally cryopreserved human heart valve tissue with the VS83 formulation induces changes in the activation and differentiation characteristics of human monocytes, and thereby may influence long-term performance following implantation. Conventional frozen cryopreservation (CFC) is currently the gold standard for cardiovascular allograft preservation. However, inflammation and structural deterioration limit transplant durability. Ice-free cryopreservation (IFC) already demonstrated matrix structure preservation combined with attenuated immune responses. In this study, we aim to explore the mechanisms of this diminished immunogenicity in vitro. First, we characterized factors released by human aortic tissue after CFC and IFC. Secondly, we analyzed co-cultures with human peripheral blood mononuclear cells, purified monocytes, T cells and monocyte-derived macrophages to examine functional immune effects triggered by the tissue or released cues. IFC tissue exhibited significantly lower metabolic activity and release of pro-inflammatory cytokines than CFC tissue, but surprisingly, more active transforming growth factor β. Due to reduced cytokine release by IFC tissue, less monocyte and T cell migration was detected in a chemotaxis system. Moreover, only cues from CFC tissue but not from IFC tissue amplified αCD3 triggered T cell proliferation. In a specifically designed macrophage-tissue assay, we could show that macrophages did not upregulate M1 polarization markers (CD80 or HLA-DR) on either tissue type. In conclusion, IFC selectively modulates tissue characteristics and thereby attenuates immune cell attraction and activation. Therefore, IFC treatment creates improved opportunities for cardiovascular graft preservation.

Human heart valve allografts continue to represent almost perfect substitutes for heart valves. They have optimal hemodynamic characteristics and are highly resistant to infections. The first clinical use of allograft heart valves was as homovitals being transplanted after antibiotic incubation without any preservation. Since 1968, relatively standardized frozen cryopreservation (SFC) has been employed, including storage in vapor-phase liquid nitrogen. Disadvantages, particularly in pediatric patients, are limited availability due to organ scarcity, inability to grow, degeneration, immune response, and long-term failure. However, in contrast to alternative prosthetic or bioprosthetic heart valve replacements, they represent the best pediatric and juvenile replacement options for the pulmonary valve. Application of multiphoton imaging analysis for three-dimensional visualization of elastin and collagen by induction of autofluorescence without chemical fixation, embedding, and staining has revealed partial destruction of elastic and collagenous matrix in SFC valves. As the overall amount of collagen and elastin remains unchanged, the observed destruction is attributed to freezing-induced extracellular matrix damages due to ice crystal formation during SFC. The objective of this review is an assessment of current allograft preservation methods and the potential of novel preservation techniques to avoid ice formation with accompanied better long-term function.

Patients who undergo endovascular repair of aortic aneurysms (EVAR) require life-long surveillance because complications including, in particular, endoleaks, aneurysm rupture, and graft dislocation are diagnosed in a certain share of the patient population and may occur at any time after the original procedure. Radiation exposure in patients undergoing EVAR and post-EVAR surveillance has been investigated by previous authors. Arriving at realistic exposure data is essential because radiation doses resulting from CT were shown to be not irrelevant. Efforts directed at identification of factors impacting the level of radiation exposure in both the course of the EVAR procedure and post-EVAR endovascular interventions and CTAs are warranted as potentially modifiable factors may offer opportunities to reduce the radiation. In the light of the risks found to be associated with radiation exposure and considering the findings above, those involved in EVAR and post-EVAR surveillance should aim at optimal dose management.

Because aortic occlusion is arguably one of the most dangerous aortic manipulation maneuvers during cardiac surgery in terms of perioperative ischemic neurological injury, the purpose of this investigation is to assess the structural mechanical impact resulting from the use of existing and newly proposed occluders. Existing (clinically used) occluders considered include different cross-clamps (CCs) and endo-aortic balloon occlusion (EABO). A novel occluder is also introduced, namely, constrained EABO (CEABO), which consists of applying a constrainer externally around the aorta when performing EABO. Computational solid mechanics are employed to investigate each occluder according to a comprehensive list of functional requirements. The potential of a state of occlusion is also considered for the first time. Three different constrainer designs are evaluated for CEABO. Although the CCs were responsible for the highest strains, largest deformation, and most inefficient increase of the occlusion potential, it remains the most stable, simplest, and cheapest occluder. The different CC hinge geometries resulted in poorer performance of CC used for minimally invasive procedures than conventional ones. CEABO with a profiled constrainer successfully addresses the EABO shortcomings of safety, stability, and positioning accuracy, while maintaining its complexities of operation (disadvantage) and yielding additional functionalities (advantage). Moreover, CEABO is able to achieve the previously unattainable potential to provide a clinically determinable state of occlusion. CEABO offers an attractive alternative to the shortcomings of existing occluders, with its design rooted in achieving the highest patient safety. Background: Infection is a main cause of morbidity and mortality after heart surgery, with multi-resistant pathogens increasingly representing a challenge. Daptomycin provides bactericidal activity against gram-positive organisms that are resistant to standard treatment including vancomycin., Methods: A cohort of cardiac surgical patients, treated with daptomycin for major infection at two tertiary care centers, were retrospectively studied with a particular focus on the type of infection, causative pathogens and co-infections, daptomycin dosage, adverse events and outcome in order to provide evidence for the efficiency and safety of daptomycin in a distinct high-risk patient population., Results: Sixty-five patients (87.7 % males, 60.4 ± 13.5 years) who had undergone aortic surgery (20.0 %), ventricular assist device (VAD) implantation (21.5 %), combined procedures (21.5 %), coronary artery bypass grafting (12.3 %), isolated valve surgery (15.4 %) and heart transplantation (7.7 %) were diagnosed with catheter-related infection (26.1 %), valve endocarditis (18.8 %), sternal wound (13.0 %), VAD-associated (11.6 %), cardiac implantable electrophysiological device (CIED)-associated (4.1 %), respiratory tract (4.3 %), bloodstream (4.3 %) and other infection (4.3 %). In 13.0 %, no focus of infection was identified though symptoms of severe infection were present. The most frequent pathogens were Staphylococcus epidermidis (30.4 %), Staphylococcus aureus (23.1 %) and Enterococcus species (10.1 %). Daptomycin doses ranging from 3 mg/kg every 48 h to 10 mg/kg every 24 h were administered for 15.4 ± 11.8 days. 87.0 % of the cases were classified as success, 7.2 % as treatment failure and 5.8 as non-evaluable. Adverse events were limited to one case of mild and one case of moderate neutropenia with recovery upon termination of treatment., Conclusion: Daptomycin proved safe and effective in major infection in high-risk cardiac surgical patients.

Background: In patients with left ventricular non-compaction (LVNC), implantation of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) may be performed as a bridge to transplantation. In this respect, the particular characteristics of the left ventricular myocardium may represent a challenge., Case Presentation: We report a patient with LVNC who required urgent heart transplantation for inflow cannula obstruction nine months after receiving a LVAD. LVAD parameters, echocardiography and examination of the explanted heart suggested changes of left ventricular configuration brought about by LVAD support as the most likely cause of inflow cannula obstruction., Conclusions: We conclude that changes experienced by non-compacted myocardium during LVAD support may give rise to inflow cannula obstruction and flow reduction. Presence of LVNC mandates tight surveillance for changes in LV configuration and LVAD flow characteristics and may justify urgent transplantation listing status.

Aneurysms of the ascending aorta are an outstanding challenge to clinicians as they may persist asymptomatic until they present with dissection or rupture. Intensive research is performed to reveal the molecular mechanisms causing aneurysm formation. Calpains are ubiquitous non-lysosomal cysteine proteases which are classically activated by calcium signaling. The two major forms of the calpain-family are calpain-I and calpain-II. Calpastatin specifically inhibits the proteolytic activity of calpain-I and -II. Recently it has been demonstrated in aneurysm tissues from ascending aortas obtained from Marfan syndrome patients that calpain-II expression is increased and calpastatin expression is decreased. Thus, we were interested in the probable role of calpains in aneurysms of ascending aorta in non-Marfan patients. Therefore, ascending aortic samples of dilated and non-dilated aortas were analyzed according to their calpain-I, -II and calpastatin content as well as the expression levels of MMPs and elastin as well as the infiltration of inflammatory cells. We have found significant differences in calpain-I and calpastatin protein expression and serum levels in patients with aneurysm of the ascending aorta. Furthermore, MMP-1 and MMP-3 expression levels correlate with calpain-I protein levels. Due to our findings we conclude that calpain-1 seems to be related to fibrotic alteration in aortic aneurysm tissue in our experimental group. The change in calpain-1 modulates the structure of aortic tissue causing alteration in elastin structure, thus enabling macrophage infiltration and elevation of MMP levels. Circulating levels of calpain-1 may be used as a prognostic marker in the future if further correlation analyses are done.

Patients with risks of ischemic injury, e.g. during circulatory arrest in cardiac surgery, or after resuscitation are subjected to therapeutic hypothermia. For aortic surgery, the body is traditionally cooled down to 18 °C and then rewarmed to body temperature. The role of hypothermia and the subsequent rewarming process on leukocyte-endothelial interactions and expression of junctional-adhesion-molecules is not clarified yet. Thus, we investigated in an in-vitro model the influence of temperature modulation during activation and transendothelial migration of leukocytes through human endothelial cells. Additionally, we investigated the expression of JAMs in the rewarming phase. Exposure to low temperatures alone during transmigration scarcely affects leukocyte extravasation, whereas hypothermia during treatment and transendothelial migration improves leukocyte-endothelial interactions. Rewarming causes a significant up-regulation of transmigration with falling temperatures. JAM-A is significantly modulated during rewarming. Our data suggest that transendothelial migration of leukocytes is not only modulated by cell-activation itself. Activation temperatures and the rewarming process are essential. Continued hypothermia significantly inhibits transendothelial migration, whereas the rewarming process enhances transmigration strongly. The expression of JAMs, especially JAM-A, is strongly modulated during the rewarming process. Endothelial protection prior to warm reperfusion and mild hypothermic conditions reducing the difference between hypothermia and rewarming temperatures should be considered.
