Jupiter’s icy moon Europa is a prime target in our exploration of potentially habitable worlds beyond Earth. The combination of a subsurface liquid water layer in contact with a rocky seafloor may yield an ocean rich in the elements and energy needed for the emergence of life, and for potentially sustaining life through time. Europa may hold the clues to one of NASA’s long-standing quests – to determine whether or not we are alone in the universe. The Europa Clipper mission will characterize Europa’s habitability as the first step in the search for potential life at Europa by conducting approximately four dozen flybys. The project is preparing for a System Integration Review in November of 2021. This paper will summarize changes from the mission’s Preliminary Design Review (PDR) baseline, including science objectives, launch vehicle, interplanetary trajectory, science tour, flight system, payload and mission phases. Since PDR several of the Level 1 science requirements were descoped and the science requirement flow was realigned, in order to control cost growth. The realignment deemphasized science redundancy, which had resulted in an over-constrained science tour, in favor of a more targeted linkage to the primary responding instrument. Additionally, changes to the PDR flight system design baseline include changes to the sounding radar antenna design, the magnetometer architecture, and the heat redistribution system pumps. All changes have been incorporated into a reference science tour used to demonstrate that the requirements and design of the flight system and payload are mature enough to support flight builds.

Building upon the success of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) landing and surface mission, the Mars 2020 project is a flagship-class science mission intended to address key questions about the potential for life on Mars and collect samples for possible Earth return by a future mission. [1] Mars 2020 will also demonstrate technologies needed to enable future human expeditions to Mars. Utilizing the groundbreaking entry, descent, and landing (EDL) architecture pioneered by the MSL, [2] [3] Mars 2020 will launch in July 2020 and land on Mars in February 2021.

The Mars2020 entry vehicle is currently being developed by NASA to safely land its next rover on the Martian surface in 2021. During entry, the vehicle will be protected from aerothermal environments using a PICA (Phenolic Impregnated Carbon Ablator)-tiled heatshield. PICA loses mass through surface recession and in-depth pyrolysis as it is heated. Pre-flight knowledge of heatshield mass loss is required for vehicle balancing during critical mission events. This study attempts to predict the total mass loss experienced by the Mars2020's heatshield during its entry. A grid was created over the half of the heatshield which generated 108 points across a total of 9 spokes. Aero-thermal environments were provided from CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) calculations that considered a baselined trajectory. The TPS (Thermal Protection System) stack was a build-up of composite, aluminum, composite, an HT-424 bond, followed by PICA. The FIAT (Fully Implicit Ablation, Thermal-response) 1-D analysis utilized this TPS stack and the CFD environments and was run at each grid point giving mass flux information from the point of atmospheric entry until parachute deployment. The mass flux due to recession and pyrolysis gas was summed and integrated first through time and then across the half heatshield using a polar integration tool. The mass loss results were mirrored to the other half of the heatshield to calculate total mass loss throughout the entry phase of flight. This total mass loss value and its distribution was used by entry vehicle designers to account for CG (Center of Gravity) offset during parachute descent when the heatshield is no longer losing significant mass.

The Mars 2020 Rover Mission (M2020) is characterized by long-range traverses between scientific Regions Of Interest (ROIs), as well as the demanding requirement on the distance and time for the inter-ROI traverses. As a result, surface traversability is one of the major driving factors for the landing site selection of M2020. With the newly developed Mars Terrain Traversability analysis Tools (MTTT), we performed traversability analysis of the eight candidate landing sites with an unprecedented granularity. This paper describes the MTTT analysis capabilities, as well as how the MTTT capabilities were used to down-select from eight to three candidate landing sites for further evaluation.
