Abstract

XMM-Newton, a European Space Agency observatory, has been observing the X-ray, ultra-violet and optical sky for 23 years. During this time, astronomy has evolved from mainly studying single sources to populations and from a single wavelength, to multi-wavelength or messenger data. We are also moving into an era of time domain astronomy. New software and methods are required to accompany evolving astronomy and prepare for the next generation X-ray observatory, Athena. Here we present XMM2ATHENA, a programme funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. XMM2ATHENA builds on foundations laid by the XMM-Newton Survey Science Centre (XMM-SSC), including key members of this consortium and the Athena Science ground segment, along with members of the X-ray community. The project is developing and testing new methods and software to allow the community to follow the X-ray transient sky in quasi-real time, identify multi-wavelength or messenger counterparts of XMM-Newton sources and determine their nature using machine learning. We detail here the first milestone delivery of the project, a new online, sensitivity estimator. We also outline other products, including the forthcoming innovative stacking procedure and detection algorithms to detect the faintest sources. These tools will then be adapted for Athena and the newly detected or identified sources will enhance preparation for observing the Athena X-ray sky., Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in Astronomische Nachrichten

Abstract

In this White Paper we present the potential of the Enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for determining the nature of dense matter; neutron star cores host an extreme density regime which cannot be replicated in a terrestrial laboratory. The tightest statistical constraints on the dense matter equation of state will come from pulse profile modelling of accretion-powered pulsars, burst oscillation sources, and rotation-powered pulsars. Additional constraints will derive from spin measurements, burst spectra, and properties of the accretion flows in the vicinity of the neutron star. Under development by an international Consortium led by the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Science, the eXTP mission is expected to be launched in the mid 2020s., Comment: Accepted for publication on Sci. Abstract

In this paper we describe the potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for studies related to accretion flows in the strong field gravity regime around both stellar-mass and supermassive black-holes. eXTP has the unique capability of using advanced 'spectral-timing-polarimetry' techniques to analyze the rapid variations with three orthogonal diagnostics of the flow and its geometry, yielding unprecedented insight into the inner accreting regions, the effects of strong field gravity on the material within them and the powerful outflows which are driven by the accretion process., Comment: Accepted for publication on Sci. Abstract

We present new optical spectroscopy of 20 candidate counterparts of 17 X-ray sources in the direction of the M31 disc. By comparing the X-ray catalogue from the XMM-Newton survey of M31 with star catalogues from the Local Group Galaxy Survey, we chose counterpart candidates based on optical colour and X-ray hardness. We have discovered 17 counterpart candidates with spectra containing stellar features. Eight of these are early-type stars of O or B type in M31, with hard X-ray spectra, making them good HMXB candidates. Three of these eight exhibit emission lines, which we consider to be the strongest HMXB candidates. In addition, our spectra reveal two likely Galactic cataclysmic variables, one foreground M star, two probable LMXBs related to M31 globular clusters, one emission line region with an embedded Wolf-Rayet star, and one newly-discovered supernova remnant. Finally, two of the sources have stellar spectra with no features indicative of association with an X-ray source., Comment: 49 pages, 30 figures, 8 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

We present the analysis of supernova remnants (SNRs) and candidates in M31 identified in the XMM-Newton large programme survey of M31. SNRs are among the bright X-ray sources in a galaxy. They are good indicators of recent star formation activities of a galaxy and of the interstellar environment in which they evolve. By combining the X-ray data of sources in M31 with optical data as well as with optical and radio catalogues, we aim to compile a complete, revised list of SNRs emitting X-rays in M31 detected with XMM-Newton, study their luminosity and spatial distribution, and understand the X-ray spectrum of the brightest SNRs. We analysed the X-ray spectra of the twelve brightest SNRs and candidates using XMM-Newton data. The four brightest sources allowed us to perform a more detailed spectral analysis and the comparison of different models to describe their spectrum. For all M31 large programme sources we searched for optical counterparts on the Ha, [Sii], and [Oiii] images of the Local Group Galaxy Survey. We confirm 21 X-ray sources as counterparts of known SNRs. In addition, we identify five new X-ray sources as X-ray and optically emitting SNRs. Seventeen sources are no longer considered as SNR candidates. We have thus created a list of 26 X-ray SNRs and 20 candidates in M31 based on their X-ray, optical, and radio emission, which is the most recent complete list of X-ray SNRs in M31. 8. The spectroscopic legacy of XMM-Newton after more than 20 years

Abstract

The EU funded XMM2Athena project aims at developing and testing new methods and software to allow the community to follow the X-ray transient sky in quasi-real time, identify multiwavelength/messenger counterparts of the sources detected with XMM-Newton and determine their nature using advanced machine learning methods and probe the faintest sources using innovative stacking and detection algorithms. Within this project we developed software to perform automated fits based on a Bayesian approach. We did spectral fits of the 319565 detections with spectra in the 4XMM-DR11 catalogue using a simple absorbed powerlaw model. Furthermore, we fit combined spectra for the 30325 sources that have been observed more than once, based on the XMM-Newton stacked catalogue, using an absorbed powerlaw as well as an absorbed blackbody model. We performed quality checks and investigated the distributions of the spectral parameters. Here we will present the results of our efforts and promote our catalogues to encourage the community to make use of them.&nbsp

Abstract

In this paper we describe the potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for studies related to accretion flows in the strong field gravity regime around both stellar-mass and supermassive black-holes. eXTP has the unique capability of using advanced 'spectral-timing-polarimetry' techniques to analyze the rapid variations with three orthogonal diagnostics of the flow and its geometry, yielding unprecedented insight into the inner accreting regions, the effects of strong field gravity on the material within them and the powerful outflows which are driven by the accretion process., Accepted for publication on Sci. Abstract

In this White Paper we present the potential of the Enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for determining the nature of dense matter; neutron star cores host an extreme density regime which cannot be replicated in a terrestrial laboratory. The tightest statistical constraints on the dense matter equation of state will come from pulse profile modelling of accretion-powered pulsars, burst oscillation sources, and rotation-powered pulsars. Additional constraints will derive from spin measurements, burst spectra, and properties of the accretion flows in the vicinity of the neutron star. Abstract

In this paper we describe the potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for studies related to accretion flows in the strong field gravity regime around both stellar-mass and supermassive black-holes. eXTP has the unique capability of using advanced “spectral-timing-polarimetry” techniques to analyze the rapid variations with three orthogonal diagnostics of the flow and its geometry, yielding unprecedented insight into the inner accreting regions, the effects of strong field gravity on the material within them and the powerful outflows which are driven by the accretion process. 16. X-ray Source Population Study of the Local Group Galaxy M 31

Abstract

This dissertation presents the analysis of a large and deep XMM-Newton survey of the second large Local Group spiral galaxy M 31. The survey observations, taken between June 2006 and February 2008, together with re-analysed archival observations from June 2000 to July 2004 cover, for the first time, the whole D25 ellipse of M 31 with XMM-Newton down to a limiting luminosity of ~10^35 erg/s in the 0.2-4.5 keV band. The main goal of the thesis was a study of the different source populations of M 31 that can be observed in X-rays. Therefore a catalogue was created, which contains all 1948 sources detected in the 0.2-12.0 keV range. 961 of these sources were detected in X-rays for the first time. Source classification and identification was based on X-ray hardness ratios, spatial extent of the sources, and by cross correlating with catalogues in the X-ray, optical, infrared and radio wavelengths. An additional classification criterion was the long-term temporal variability of the sources in X-rays. This variability allows us to distinguish between X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei. Furthermore, supernova remnant classifications of previous studies that did not use long-term variability as a classification criterion, could be validated. Including previous Chandra and ROSAT observations in the long-term variability study allowed me to detect additional transient or at least highly variable sources, which are good candidates for being X-ray binaries. Fourteen of the 40 supersoft source (SSS) candidates correlated with optical novae and therefore can be considered the supersoft emission of the optical novae. Among them is the first nova/SSS detected in a globular cluster of M 31. Correlations with previous ROSAT and Chandra studies revealed that only three SSSs are visible for at least one decade. This result underlines the strong long-term variability found for the class of SSSs. In addition the correlations demonstrated that strict selection criteria have to be applied to securely select SSSs. An investigation of the spatial distribution of the 25 supernova remnants (SNRs) and 37 SNR candidates showed that many of these sources are consistent with the location of the 10 kpc dust ring and other star forming regions in M 31. This connection between SNRs and star forming regions implies that most of the remnants are from type II supernovae. The brightest sources of M 31 belong to the class of X-ray binaries (XRBs). Ten low mass XRBs (LMXBs) and 26 LMXB candidates were identified based on their temporal variability. In addition 36 LMXBs and 17 LMXB candidates were identified due to correlations with globular clusters and globular cluster candidates. From the LMXBs located in globular clusters one is a black hole candidate and another a neutron star candidate. From optical and X-ray colour-colour diagrams, possible high mass XRB (HMXB) candidates were selected. Two of these candidates have an X-ray spectrum as is expected for an HMXB containing a neutron star primary. To investigate the logN-logS relations of sources in the field of M 31, a catalogue of sources detected in the 2.0-10.0 keV energy range was created. The slope of the logN-logS relation for the whole galaxy is consistent with the expectation for spiral galaxies (Colbert et al. 2004). Subtracting the background logN-logS relation, the region beyond the D25 ellipse still contains about 13 sources/deg^2 of M 31 with fluxes above the completeness limit of ~3.2x10^{-14} erg/cm^2/s (~2.3x10^36 erg/s at the distance of M 31). The radial dependence of the source distribution in M 31's disc can be well fitted with an exponential profile, for limiting fluxes of ~3.2x10^{-14} erg/cm^2/s and 10^{-13} erg/cm^2/s (~7.3x10^36 erg/s). About 60% of all sources with fluxes above 3.2x10^{-14} erg/cm^2/s are background sources. While the contribution of background sources lies at ~20% in the inner disc region, the fraction increases to >~80% in the outer areas of M 31. For the dust ring region, the slope of the logN-logS relation as well as the number of sources and their dependence on the star forming rate were consistent with the universal logN-logS relation predicted from theoretical considerations of HMXBs (Grimm et al. 2003). These findings propose that the dust ring region contains a population of HMXBs. A comparison of the number of X-ray binaries (XRBs) obtained from the logN-logS study to the ones listed in the source catalogue showed that many XRBs detected in the logN-logS study with fluxes between 10^{-13} erg/cm^2/s and 3.2x10^{-14} erg/cm^2/s, or (independent from the flux) those XRBs located in the inner disc of M 31, remain without XRB classification in the source catalogue. The results presented in this thesis gave us deeper insights in the properties of the population of X-ray sources in M 31. Nevertheless, about 65% of all sources detected in the field of M 31 can be classified as ``hard" sources only, i.e. it is not possible to decide whether these sources are X-ray binaries or Crab-like supernova remnants in M 31, or active galactic nuclei. Deeper observations in the X-ray and at other wavelengths are needed to classify these sources.

Abstract

Classical novae (CNe) have recently been reported to represent the major class of supersoft X-ray sources (SSSs) in the central area of our neighbouring galaxy M 31. This paper presents a review of results from recent X-ray observations of M 31 with XMM-Newton and Chandra. We carried out a dedicated optical and X-ray monitoring program of CNe and SSSs in the central area ofM 31. We discovered the first SSSs in M 31 globular clusters (GCs) and their connection to the very first discovered CN in a M 31 GC. This result may have an impact on the CN rate in GCs. Furthermore, in our optical and X-ray monitoring data we discovered the CN M3 1N 2007-11a, which shows a very short SSS phase of 29–52 days. Short SSS states (durations ≤ 100 days) of CNe indicate massive white dwarfs (WDs) that are candidate progenitors of supernovae type Ia. In the case of M31N 2007-11a, the optical and X-ray light curves suggest a binary containing a WD with MWD > 1.0 M⊙. Finally, we present the discovery of the SSS counterpart of the CN M31N 2006-04a. The X-ray light curve of M31N 2006-04a shows short-time variability, which might indicate an orbital period of about 2 hours.

Abstract

In this White Paper we present the potential of the Enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for determining the nature of dense matter; neutron star cores host an extreme density regime which cannot be replicated in a terrestrial laboratory. The tightest statistical constraints on the dense matter equation of state will come from pulse profile modelling of accretion-powered pulsars, burst oscillation sources, and rotation-powered pulsars. Additional constraints will derive from spin measurements, burst spectra, and properties of the accretion flows in the vicinity of the neutron star. Under development by an international Consortium led by the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Science, the eXTP mission is expected to be launched in the mid 2020s., Comment: Accepted for publication on Sci.
