Abstract

The thermal, dynamic mechanical analysis, morphology and mechanical properties of semi-interpenetrating polymer networks based on crosslinked polyurethane (PU) and poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) synthesized by photopolymerization and by thermopolymerization have been investigated. The thermal analysis has evidenced the two glass temperature transitions in the semi-IPNs and this is confirmed by the thermodynamic miscibility investigation of the systems. The Dynamic Mechanical Analysis spectra have shown that the phase separation is more significant in the thermopolymerized semi-IPNs: the tan δ peaks of constituent polymers are more distinct and the minimum between the two peaks is deeper. The calculated segregation degree values of semi-IPN's components are significantly higher for thermopolymerized semi-IPNs, thereby the process of phase separation in the thermopolymerized semi-IPNs is more developed. The structures of two series of samples investigated by SEM are completely different. The mechanical properties reflect these changes in structure of semi-IPNs with increasing amount of PHEMA and with the changing of the method of synthesis. The results suggest that the studied semi-IPNs are two-phase systems with incomplete phase separation. Abstract

Mutational analysis revealed the presence of two binding regions in the vacuolar protein sorting (Vps1p) protein in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The biological activity of Vsp1 was found to be unaffected by the presence or absence of microtubules. One site was located in the portion of the amino-terminal and functioned for binding and hydrolysis of GTPs necessary for vacuolar protein sorting. The other site was found in the carboxy-terminal half of Vsp1p and was suggested to mediate the protein's interaction with an unidentified factor of the sorting mechanism.

Abstract

International audience; The curing process of epoxy affects the chemical structure of the final network so mechanical and physical properties of the polymeric matrix for a composite may be modified according to the polymerisation conditions. This paper describes the ambiguity in assignment of reference bands to follow the cure of poly-epoxy reactive systems using a laboratory-made system which allows the coupling of dielectric analysis and Fourier Transform Near Infrared Spectroscopy (FTNIR). The dielectric measurements were obtained using interdigitated electrode. In situ monitoring of extent of reaction was carried out from room temperature up to 160 °C using fibre-optic FTNIR spectroscopy. For the DGEBA/MCDEA system the epoxy band at 6060 cm-1 was chosen in preference to the band at 4530 cm-1 as representative of the epoxy function evolution during polymerisation because a small unknown peak probably due to the hardener appears in the 4530 cm-1 region. The bands at 4620 and 4680 cm-1 assigned to aromatic combination bands and widely used as reference bands are not unique for this formulation hence the band at 5980 cm-1 is used as reference. The Principal Components Analysis (PCA) shows clearly also that the bands at 4620 and 4680 cm-1 vary during the polymerisation. Surprisingly, the band at 4530 cm-1 is equivalent to the one at 6060 cm-1 to calculate the conversion rate. It is probably due to the fact that the hardener band near 4530 cm-1 follows the same behaviour as the epoxy band at 4530 cm-1.

Abstract

International audience; This paper presents the study of ageing under irradiation of filled elastomers, particularly aluminium trihydrate ATH or nanoscopic silica filled EPDM. The materials have been physico-chemically, microstructurally and mechanically characterised at various levels of ageing: here only results for physical and mechanical properties (at small (DMA) and large deformations) have been presented. From these analyses, the competition between crosslinking and chains scissions during irradiation was highlighted. Moreover, a strong influence of fillers on mechanical properties during ageing was observed.

Abstract

International audience; The in situ monitoring of the polymerization of cyclic butylene terephtalate (CBT) oligomers by dielectric sensing has been investigated under isothermal conditions at different processing temperatures. The change in conductivity depends on the increase of molecular weight but is also influenced by crystallization of the obtained c-PBT during or after polymerization. Dielectric sensing investigations are in good agreement with SEC and DSC analysis which confirm the observation of polymerization and crystallization kinetics. Abstract

International audience; Thermo-mechanical properties of poly(ethylene naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylate) (PEN) films in the amorphous state, uniaxially stretched and thermally crystallized were compared and show different microstructure–property relationships. The glass transition temperature shifts to higher temperatures when films are stretched above Tg at 160 °C, in relation with a crystallinity increase and subsequent confinement effects of the amorphous phase, but films stretched below Tg at 100 °C show an opposite trend while drawing. This is discussed in relation with the highly mobile structural state arising from plastic deformation of the amorphous phase. The confinement effects were particularly assessed by the estimation of a ‘rigid amorphous fraction' (RAF). Crystallinities and RAF were estimated from DSC data for the uniaxially drawn and thermally crystallized films respectively. It was observed that the RAF was higher in thermally crystallized films than in uniaxially drawn samples in relation to a lamellar semi-crystalline morphology. In addition to this detailed thermo-mechanical characterizations, low stress creep measurements were carried out during heating scans. They can be related to the microstructure and thermal transitions of the films. In particular, for the uniaxially stretched films, the measured shrinkage decreases when the draw ratio increases because the crystalline entities developed during the draw process are locking the chain motions

Abstract

The article describes the phase separation and properties of the semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) based on crosslinked polyurethane and linear poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) prepared by photopolymerization and thermopolymerization. According to the authors, the phase separation is more significant in the thermopolymerized semi-IPNs as shown by the dynamic mechanical analysis spectra. The authors add that the semi-IPN samples with early stage of phase separation exhibit higher mechanical characteristics.
