In the human pathogenic mold Aspergillus fumigatus, sexual identity is determined by the mating-type idiomorphs MAT1-1 and MAT1-2 residing at the MAT locus. Upon crossing of compatible partners, a heterothallic mating is executed to eventually form cleistothecia that contain recombinant ascospores. Given that the MAT1 gene products are DNA binding master regulators that govern this complex developmental process, we monitored the MAT1-driven transcriptomes of A. fumigatus by conditional overexpression of either MAT1 gene followed by RNA-seq analyses. Numerous genes related to the process of mating were found to be under transcriptional control, such as pheromone production and recognition. Substantial differences between the MAT1-1- and MAT1-2-driven transcriptomes could be detected by functional categorization of differentially expressed genes. Moreover, a significant and distinct impact on expression of genetic clusters of secondary metabolism became apparent, which could be verified on the product level. Unexpectedly, specific cross-regulation of the fumagillin/pseurotin supercluster was evident, thereby uncoupling its co-regulatory characteristic. These insights imply a tight interconnection of sexual development accompanied by ascosporogenesis with secondary metabolite production of a pathogenic fungus and impose evolutionary constraints that link these two fundamental aspects of the fungal lifestyle.

In Galperin billiards, two balls colliding with a hard wall form an analog calculator for the digits of the number &pi, This classical, one-dimensional three-body system (counting the hard wall) calculates the digits of &pi, in a base determined by the ratio of the masses of the two particles. This base can be any integer, but it can also be an irrational number, or even the base can be &pi, itself. This article reviews previous results for Galperin billiards and then pushes these results farther. We provide a complete explicit solution for the balls&rsquo, positions and velocities as a function of the collision number and time. We demonstrate that Galperin billiard can be mapped onto a two-particle Calogero-type model. We identify a second dynamical invariant for any mass ratio that provides integrability for the system, and for a sequence of specific mass ratios we identify a third dynamical invariant that establishes superintegrability. Integrability allows us to derive some new exact results for trajectories, and we apply these solutions to analyze the systematic errors that occur in calculating the digits of &pi, with Galperin billiards, including curious cases with irrational number bases.

We present a new class of electrostatics problems that are exactly solvable by adding finitely many image charges. Given a charge at some location inside a cavity bounded by up to four conducting grounded segments of spheres: if the spheres have a symmetry derived via a stereographic projection from a 4D finite reflection group, then this is a solvable generalization of the familiar problem of a charge inside a spherical cavity. There are 19 three-parametric families of finite groups formed by inversions relative to at most four spheres, each member of each family giving a solvable problem. We study the central hyperplane arrangement whose hyperplanes are the vanishing loci of the weights of the first and the second fundamental representations of gl n restricted to the dual fundamental Weyl chamber. We obtain generating functions that count flats and faces of a given dimension. This counting is interpreted in physics as the enumeration of the phases of the Coulomb and mixed Coulomb-Higgs branches of a five-dimensional gauge theory with 8 supercharges in presence of hypermultiplets transforming in the fundamental and antisymmetric representation of a U ( n ) gauge group as described by the Intriligator-Morrison-Seiberg superpotential.

We show that the dynamics of particles in a one-dimensional harmonic trap with hard-core interactions can be solvable for certain arrangements of unequal masses. For any number of particles, there exist two families of unequal mass particles that have integrable dynamics, and there are additional exceptional cases for three, four and five particles. The integrable mass families are classified by Coxeter reflection groups and the corresponding solutions are Bethe ansatz-like superpositions of hyperspherical harmonics in the relative hyperangular coordinates that are then restricted to sectors of fixed particle order. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that non-crystallographic reflection groups can be used to build new solvable quantum particle systems. We explicitly construct a one-parametric family of solvable four-body systems on a line, related to the symmetry of a regular icosahedron: in two distinct limiting cases the system is constrained to a half-line. Let ( G , K ) be the complex symmetric pair associated with a real reductive Lie group G 0 . We discuss an algorithmic approach to computing generators for the centralizer of K in the universal enveloping algebra of g . In particular, we compute explicit generators for the cases G 0 = SU ( 2 , 2 ) , SL ( 3 , R ) , SL ( 4 , R ) , Sp ( 4 , R ) , and the exceptional group G 2 ( 2 ) .

For each classical symmetric pair ( G , H ) , there is a naturally defined multi-graded algebra A ( G , H ) , called the branching algebra for ( G , H ) , which encodes the branching rule from G to H. This algebra has a natural family of subalgebras, depending on integer parameters. For a certain range of the parameters, the subalgebras have a particularly simple structure and are called stable branching algebras. In this paper, we show that the stable branching algebras for eight out of the ten families of classical symmetric pairs are flat deformations of the semigroup algebras of explicitly described lattice cones.

A quantum Galilean cannon is a 1D sequence of $N$ hard-core particles with special mass ratios, and a hard wall; conservation laws due to the reflection group $A_{N}$ prevent both classical stochastization and quantum diffraction. It is realizable through specie-alternating mutually repulsive bosonic soliton trains. In this article, we show that eigenenergies and eigenstates of a system consisting of four one-dimensional hard-core particles with masses $6m$, $2m$, $m$, and $3m$ in a hard-wall box can be found exactly using Bethe Ansatz. The Ansatz is based on the exceptional affine reflection group $\tilde{F}_{4}$ associated with the symmetries and tiling properties of an octacube---a Platonic solid unique to four dimensions, with no three-dimensional analogues. We also uncover the Liouville integrability structure of our problem: the four integrals of motion in involution are identified as invariant polynomials of the finite reflection group $F_{4}$, taken as functions of the components of momenta., 6 pages, 3 figures
