Aluminium forms a significant part of a nuclear waste stream that will be encapsulated in CEM I (Portland cement)/GGBS (ground granulated blast furnace slag) grout. The aluminium is in the form of irradiated fuel cladding or containers used for transporting waste. The rapid rate of corrosion of aluminium in the cement pore water and the associated hydrogen generation during the initial curing of cement systems is well known. Longer-term corrosion data however, are relatively sparse, hence this work investigates corrosion up to 777 d measured from the rate of hydrogen generation. After an initial rapid corrosion stage, it has been shown that the corrosion rate decreases in a predictable linear manner depending on the inverse of the depth corroded. Eventually the corrosion rate decreases to such a low value that the corrosion effectively ceases. When the corrosion that has taken place is compared with the voidage generated by the hydrogen generation whilst the grout is in the plastic state, then it is apparent that insufficent corrosion is likely to take place for the expansive corrosion product generated to fill these voids. Hence the formation of these corrosion products does not significantly affect the performance of the wasteform and container.

This article portrays the culmination of several years' planning and preparation by a Support and Training Team committed to providing suitable community-based accommodation for adults with mental handicaps. It is evidence of what can be achieved when several agencies combine in a spirit of partnership to put into practice the concept of community care. An attempt has been made to describe the rehabilitation training provided, starting from the initial assessment at a training unit and ending with the frequency, nature, and provision of follow-up support once the adults had been re-housed. It is important to stress the need for continuing collaboration between parents and professionals.

Despite efforts by the United Kingdom Government, the Teacher Training Agency and other organisations to address the problem of teacher shortages in geography within English schools, the subject is still failing to attract sufficient students into the profession. Whilst the impact of this has yet to be felt fully in higher education, it is only a matter of time before university geography departments may find it increasingly difficult to recruit quality students onto their undergraduate courses. By sampling three distinct populations, geography teachers, geography undergraduates and sixth formers [1] , this research presents evidence of the recruitment problem, seeks to understand its nature and suggests strategies for addressing the underlying issues.

This paper reports a project carried out with first-year geography students undertaking physical geography fieldwork. An experiment within the context of fluvial studies tests the effectiveness of student learning using contrasting approaches based on analytical-prediction and descriptive-explanation. The results, based on marks analysis and a review of student feedback, indicate that in the short term the traditional descriptive-explanation approach is significantly more conducive to student learning than the analytical-predictive mode.
